Non-Gaussianity-based Independent Vector Extraction leads to the famous one-unit FastICA/FastIVA algorithm when the likelihood function is optimized using an approximate Newton-Raphson algorithm under the orthogonality constraint. In this paper, we replace the constraint with the analytic form of the minimum variance distortionless beamformer (MVDR), by which a semi-blind variant of FastICA/FastIVA is obtained. The side information here is provided by a weighted covariance matrix replacing the noise covariance matrix, the estimation of which is a frequent goal of neural beamformers. The algorithm thus provides an intuitive connection between model-based blind extraction and learning-based extraction. The algorithm is tested in simulations and speaker ID-guided speaker extraction, showing fast convergence and promising performance.

A well-developed mathematical theory for the most of these classical fluid models is however missing. The main purpose of this study is to provide a complete proof of long-time and large-data existence of weak solutions to unsteady internal three-dimensional flows of Giesekus fluids subject to a no-slip boundary condition. As a new auxiliary tool, we provide the identification of certain biting limits in the parabolic setting, presented here within the framework of evolutionary Stokes problems. We also generalize the long-time and large-data existence result to higher dimensions, to viscoelastic models with multiple relaxation mechanisms and to viscoelastic models with different type of dissipation.

While the assumption of the ``no-slip" condition at a solid boundary is unquestioningly applied to study the flow characteristics of the Navier-Stokes fluid, there was considerable debate amongst the early pioneers of fluid mechanics, Du Buat, Girard, Navier, Coulomb, Poisson, Prony, Stokes and others, as to the proper condition that pertains at a solid boundary due to a fluid, such as water flowing adjacent to the same. Contemporary usage of the ``no-slip" boundary condition notwithstanding, Málek and Rajagopal outlined a methodology to test the validity of the assumption. In this study, we continue the investigation further by providing a scheme for determining the slip-parameter that determines the extent of slip, if one presumes that Navier-slip obtains at the boundary. We find that depending on whether the volumetric flow rate is greater or less than the volumetric flow rate corresponding to the no-slip case, different scenarios present themselves regarding what transpires at the boundary.

We consider the flow of a fluid whose response characteristics change due the value of the norm of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient, behaving as an Euler fluid below a critical value and as a Navier-Stokes fluid at and above the critical value, the norm being determined by the external stimuli. We show that such a fluid, while flowing past a bluff body, develops boundary layers which are practically identical to those that one encounters within the context of the classical boundary layer theory propounded by Prandtl. Unlike the classical boundary layer theory that arises as an approximation within the context of the Navier-Stokes theory, here the development of boundary layers is due to a change in the response characteristics of the constitutive relation. We study the flow of such a fluid past an airfoil and compare the same against the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. We find that the results are in excellent agreement with regard to the velocity and vorticity fields for the two cases.

We prove that there exists a~large-data and global-in-time weak solution to a~system of partial differential equations describing an unsteady flow of an incompressible heat-conducting rate-type viscoelastic stress-diffusive fluid filling up a~mechanically and thermally isolated container of any dimension. To overcome the~principle difficulties connected with ill-posedness of the~diffusive Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions, we assume that the~fluid admits a~strengthened dissipation mechanism, at least for excessive elastic deformations. All the~relevant material coefficients are allowed to depend continuously on the~temperature, whose evolution is captured by a~thermodynamically consistent equation. In fact, the~studied model is derived from scratch using only the~balance equations for linear momentum and energy, the~formulation of the~second law of thermodynamics and the~constitutive equation for the~internal energy. The~latter is assumed to be a~linear function of temperature, which simplifies the~model. The~concept of our weak solution incorporates both the~temperature and entropy inequalities, and also the~local balance of total energy provided that the~pressure function exists.

Long-time and large-data existence of weak solutions for initial- and boundary-value problems concerning three-dimensional flows of \emph{incompressible} fluids is nowadays available not only for Navier--Stokes fluids but also for various fluid models where the relation between the Cauchy stress tensor and the symmetric part of the velocity gradient is \emph{nonlinear}. The majority of such studies however concerns models where such a dependence is \emph{explicit} (the stress is a function of the velocity gradient), which makes the class of studied models unduly restrictive. The same concerns boundary conditions, or more precisely the slip** mechanisms on the boundary, where the no-slip is still the most preferred condition considered in the literature. Our main objective is to develop a robust mathematical theory for unsteady internal flows of \emph{implicitly constituted} incompressible fluids with implicit relations between the tangential projections of the velocity and the normal traction on the boundary. The theory covers numerous rheological models used in chemistry, biorheology, polymer and food industry as well as in geomechanics. It also includes, as special cases, nonlinear slip as well as stick-slip boundary conditions. Unlike earlier studies, the conditions characterizing admissible classes of constitutive equations are expressed by means of tools of elementary calculus. In addition, a fully constructive proof (approximation scheme) is incorporated. Finally, we focus on the question of uniqueness of such weak solutions.

These models stem as approximations of constitutive response functions for an elastic body that is defined within the context of an implicit constitutive relation between the stress and the deformation gradient. Gum metal and many metallic alloys are described well by such constitutive relations. We consider the state of anti-plane stress of a body with a smoothened V-notch within the context of constitutive relations for the linearized strain in terms of a power-law for the stretch. The problem is solved numerically and the convergence and the stability of the solution is studied.

We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterparts of Oldroyd-B and Giesekus models. Considering spatially periodic problem, we prove that for arbitrary initial data and forcing in appropriate $L^2$ spaces, there exists a unique globally defined weak solution to the equations of motion, and more regular initial data and forcing launch a more regular solution with $\bs B$ positive definite everywhere.

This manuscript proposes a novel robust procedure for the extraction of a speaker of interest (SOI) from a mixture of audio sources. The estimation of the SOI is performed via independent vector extraction (IVE). Since the blind IVE cannot distinguish the target source by itself, it is guided towards the SOI via frame-wise speaker identification based on deep learning. Still, an incorrect speaker can be extracted due to guidance failings, especially when processing challenging data. To identify such cases, we propose a criterion for non-intrusively assessing the estimated speaker. It utilizes the same model as the speaker identification, so no additional training is required. When incorrect extraction is detected, we propose a ``deflation'' step in which the incorrect source is subtracted from the mixture and, subsequently, another attempt to extract the SOI is performed. The process is repeated until successful extraction is achieved. The proposed procedure is experimentally tested on artificial and real-world datasets containing challenging phenomena: source movements, reverberation, transient noise, or microphone failures. The method is compared with state-of-the-art blind algorithms as well as with current fully supervised deep learning-based methods.

Within the theory of interacting continua, we develop a model for a heat conducting mixture of two interacting fluids described in terms of the densities and the velocities for each fluid and the temperature field for the mixture as a whole. We use a general thermodynamic framework that determines the response of the material from the knowledge of two pieces of information, namely how the material stores the energy and how the entropy is produced. This information is expressed in the form of the constitutive equations for two scalars: the Helmholtz free energy and the entropy production. Additionally, we follow the goal to determine the response of a mixture from a small (minimal) set of material parameters, including shear viscosity, bulk viscosity and heat conductivity associated with the mixture as a whole and the drag coefficient connected with the interaction force between the constituents. The same thermodynamic approach is used to obtain the model when the mixture as a whole responses as an incompressible material. For both the compressible and incompressible mixtures, we investigate three variants stemming from different definitions of the (averaged) velocity associated with the mixture as a whole. We also address the issue of identification of boundary conditions for the individual constituents from the standard boundary conditions formulated in terms of the quantities associated with the mixture as a whole.

We study a nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equation that can be viewed as a generalization of the heat equation where the temperature gradient is a~priori bounded but the heat flux provides merely \mbox{$L^1$-coercivity}. Applying higher differentiability techniques in space and time, choosing a special weighted norm (equivalent to the Euclidean norm in $\mathbb{R}^d$), incorporating finer properties of integrable functions and using the concept of renormalized solution, we prove long-time and large-data existence and uniqueness of weak solution, with an $L^1$-integrable flux, to an initial spatially-periodic problem for all values of a positive model parameter. If this parameter is smaller than $2/(d+1)$, where $d$ denotes the spatial dimension, we obtain higher integrability of the flux. As the developed approach is not restricted to a scalar equation, we also present an analogous result for nonlinear parabolic systems in which the nonlinearity, being the gradient of a strictly convex function, gives an a-priori $L^\infty$-bound on the gradient of the unknown solution.

We study systems of nonlinear partial differential equations of parabolic type, in which the elliptic operator is replaced by the first order divergence operator acting on a flux function, which is related to the spatial gradient of the unknown through an additional implicit equation. This setting, broad enough in terms of applications, significantly expands the paradigm of nonlinear parabolic problems. Formulating four conditions concerning the form of the implicit equation, we first show that these conditions describe a maximal monotone $p$-coercive graph. We then establish the global-in-time and large-data existence of (weak) solution and its uniqueness. Towards this goal, we adopt and significantly generalize the Minty method of monotone map**s. A unified theory, containing several novel tools, is developed in a way to be tractable numerically.

We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploited in the mathematical analysis of the governing equations. In particular, the definition of weak solution is motivated by the thermodynamic basis of the model.
The extra stress tensor describing the elastic response of the fluid is in our case purely spherical, which is a simplification from the physical point of view. The model nevertheless exhibits features that require novel mathematical ideas in order to deal with the technically complex structure of the associated internal energy and the more complicated forms of the corresponding entropy and energy fluxes. The paper provides the first rigorous proof of the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to the governing equations for \emph{coupled thermo-mechanical processes} in viscoelastic rate-type fluids.

We prove that there exists a weak solution to a system governing an unsteady flow of a viscoelastic fluid in three dimensions, for arbitrarily large time interval and data. The fluid is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity $v$, coupled with a diffusive variant of a combination of the Oldroyd-B and the Giesekus models for a tensor $\mathbb{B}$. By a proper choice of the constitutive relations for the Helmholtz free energy (which, however, is non-standard in the current literature, despite the fact that this choice is well motivated from the point of view of physics) and for the energy dissipation, we are able to prove that $\mathbb{B}$ enjoys the same regularity as $v$ in the classical three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. This enables us to handle any kind of objective derivative of $\mathbb{B}$, thus obtaining existence results for the class of diffusive Johnson-Segalman models as well. Moreover, using a suitable approximation scheme, we are able to show that $\mathbb{B}$ remains positive definite if the initial datum was a positive definite matrix (in a pointwise sense). We also show how the model we are considering can be derived from basic balance equations and thermodynamical principles in a natural way.

We provide a derivation of several classes of boundary conditions for fluids of Korteweg-type using a simple and transparent thermodynamic approach that automatically guarentees that the derived boundary conditions are compatible with the second law of thermodynamics. The starting assumption of our approach is to describe the boundary of the domain as the membrane separating two different continua, one inside the domain, and the other outside the domain. With this viewpoint one may employ the framework of continuum thermodynamics involving singular surfaces. This approach allows us to identify, for various classes of surface Helmholtz free energies, the corresponding surface entropy production mechanisms. By establishing the constitutive relations that guarantee that the surface entropy production is non-negative, we identify a new class of boundary conditions, which on one hand generalizes in a nontrivial manner the Navier's slip boundary conditions, and on the other hand describes dynamic and static contact angle conditions. We explore the general model in detail for a particular case of Korteweg fluid where the Helmholtz free energy in the bulk is that of a van der Waals fluid. We perform a series of numerical experiments to document the basic qualitative features of the novel boundary conditions and their practical applicability to model phenomena such as the contact angle hysteresis.

This work addresses the problem of block-online processing for multi-channel speech enhancement. Such processing is vital in scenarios with moving speakers and/or when very short utterances are processed, e.g., in voice assistant scenarios. We consider several variants of a system that performs beamforming supported by DNN-based voice activity detection (VAD) followed by post-filtering. The speaker is targeted through estimating relative transfer functions between microphones. Each block of the input signals is processed independently in order to make the method applicable in highly dynamic environments. Owing to the short length of the processed block, the statistics required by the beamformer are estimated less precisely. The influence of this inaccuracy is studied and compared to the processing regime when recordings are treated as one block (batch processing). The experimental evaluation of the proposed method is performed on large datasets of CHiME-4 and on another dataset featuring moving target speaker. The experiments are evaluated in terms of objective and perceptual criteria (such as signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) or perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ), respectively). Moreover, word error rate (WER) achieved by a baseline automatic speech recognition system is evaluated, for which the enhancement method serves as a front-end solution. The results indicate that the proposed method is robust with respect to short length of the processed block. Significant improvements in terms of the criteria and WER are observed even for the block length of 250 ms.

We are concerned with a system of partial differential equations describing internal flows of homogeneous incompressible fluids of Bingham type in which the value of activation (the so-called yield) stress depends on the internal pore pressure governed by an advection-diffusion equation. After providing the physical background of the considered model, paying attention to the assumptions involved in its derivation, we focus on the PDE analysis of the initial and boundary value problems. We give several equivalent descriptions for the considered class of fluids of Bingham type. In particular, we exploit the possibility to write such a response as an implicit tensorial constitutive equation, involving the pore pressure, the deviatoric part of the Cauchy stress and the velocity gradient. Interestingly, this tensorial response can be characterized by two scalar constraints. We employ a similar approach to treat stick-slip boundary conditions. Within such a setting we prove long time and large data existence of weak solutions to the evolutionary problem in three dimensions.

We propose a numerical scheme for simulation of transient flows of incompressible non-Newtonian fluids characterised by a non-monotone relation between the symmetric part of the velocity gradient (shear rate) and the Cauchy stress tensor (shear stress). The main difficulty in dealing with the governing equations for flows of such fluids is that the non-monotone constitutive relation allows several values of the stress to be associated with the same value of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient. This issue is handled via a reformulation of the governing equations. The equations are reformulated as a system for the triple pressure-velocity-apparent viscosity, where the apparent viscosity is given by a scalar implicit equation. We prove that the proposed numerical scheme has---on the discrete level---a solution, and using the proposed scheme we numerically solve several flow problems.

In order to facilitate precision medicine in regions of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a population-specific reference genome for the indigenous Arab popula-tion of Qatar (QTRG) was constructed by incorporating allele frequency data from sequencing of 1,161 Qataris, representing 0.4% of the population. A total of 20.9 million SNP and 3.1 million indels were observed in Qatar, including an average of 1.79% novel variants per individual ge-nome. Replacement of the GRCh37 standard reference with QTRG in a best practices genome analysis workflow resulted in an average of 7* deeper coverage depth (an improvement of 23%), and 756,671 fewer variants on average, a reduction of 16% that is attributed to common Qatari alleles being present in the QTRG reference. The benefit for using QTRG varies across ances-tries, a factor that should be taken into consideration when selecting an appropriate reference for analysis.

Community structure is of paramount importance for the understanding of complex networks. Consequently, there is a tremendous effort in order to develop efficient community detection algorithms. Unfortunately, the issue of a fair assessment of these algorithms is a thriving open question. If the ground-truth community structure is available, various clustering-based metrics are used in order to compare it versus the one discovered by these algorithms. However, these metrics defined at the node level are fairly insensitive to the variation of the overall community structure. To overcome these limitations, we propose to exploit the topological features of the 'community graphs' (where the nodes are the communities and the links represent their interactions) in order to evaluate the algorithms. To illustrate our methodology, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of overlap** community detection algorithms using a set of real-world networks with known a priori community structure. Results provide a better perception of their relative performance as compared to classical metrics. Moreover, they show that more emphasis should be put on the topology of the community structure. We also investigate the relationship between the topological properties of the community structure and the alternative evaluation measures (quality metrics and clustering metrics). It appears clearly that they present different views of the community structure and that they must be combined in order to evaluate the effectiveness of community detection algorithms.

Thermodynamical arguments are known to be useful in the construction of physically motivated Lyapunov functionals for nonlinear stability analysis of spatially homogeneous equilibrium steady states in thermodynamically isolated systems. Unfortunately, the limitation to thermodynamically isolated systems is essential, and standard arguments are not applicable even for some very simple thermodynamically open systems.
On the other hand, the nonlinear stability of thermodynamically open systems is usually investigated using the so-called energy method. Unfortunately, the designation "energy method" is clearly a misnomer. The mathematical quantity that is traditionally referred to as the "energy" is by no means linked to the energy in the physical sense of the word. Consequently, it would seem that genuine thermodynamical concepts are of no use in the nonlinear stability analysis of thermodynamically open systems.
We show that this is not true. In particular, we propose a construction that in the case of simple heat conduction problem leads to a physically well-motivated Lyapunov functional, which effectively replaces the artificial Lyapunov functional used in the standard energy method. The proposed construction seems to be general enough to be applied in complex thermomechanical settings.

In a recent work devoted to the magnetism of Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$, Shu et al. [New J. Phys. 19 (2017) 023026] have proposed a "simplified" unfrustrated microscopic model that differs considerably from the models refined through decades of prior work. We show that the proposed model is at odds with known experimental data, including the reported magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data up to 550~K. Using an 8$^{\rm th}$ order high-temperature expansion for $χ(T)$, we show that the experimental data for Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$ are consistent with the prior model derived from inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies. We also establish the $T$-range of validity for a Curie-Weiss law for the real frustrated magnetic system. We argue that the knowledge of the long-range ordered magnetic structure for $T<T_N$ and of $χ(T)$ in a restricted $T$-range provides insufficient information to extract all of the relevant couplings in frustrated magnets; the saturation field and INS data must also be used to determine several exchange couplings, including the weak but decisive frustrating antiferromagnetic (AFM) interchain couplings.

We establish the long-time existence of large-data weak solutions to a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The system of interest governs the motion of non-Newtonian fluids described by a simplified viscoelastic rate-type model with a stress-diffusion term. The simplified model shares many qualitative features with more complex viscoelastic rate-type models that are frequently used in the modeling of fluids with complicated microstructure. As such, the simplified model provides important preliminary insight into the mathematical properties of these more complex and practically relevant models of non-Newtonian fluids. The simplified model that is analyzed from the mathematical perspective is shown to be thermodynamically consistent, and we extensively comment on the interplay between the thermodynamical background of the model and the mathematical analysis of the corresponding initial-boundary-value problem.

We propose thermodynamically consistent models for viscoelastic fluids with a stress diffusion term. In particular, we derive variants of compressible/incompressible Maxwell/Oldroyd-B models with a stress diffusion term in the evolution equation for the extra stress tensor. It is shown that the stress diffusion term can be interpreted either as a consequence of a nonlocal energy storage mechanism or as a consequence of a nonlocal entropy production mechanism, while different interpretations of the stress diffusion mechanism lead to different evolution equations for the temperature. The benefits of the knowledge of the thermodynamical background of the derived models are documented in the study of nonlinear stability of equilibrium rest states. The derived models open up the possibility to study fully coupled thermomechanical problems involving viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion.

We propose an Eulerian thermodynamically compatible model for ideal plasticity of crystalline solids treated as a material flow through an adjustable crystal lattice space. The model is based on the additive splitting of the velocity gradient into the crystal lattice part and the plastic part. The approach extends a Gibbs-potential-based formulation developed by Rajagopal and Srinivasa for obtaining the response functions for elasto-visco-plastic crystals. The framework makes constitutive assumptions for two scalar functions: the Gibbs potential and the rate of dissipation. The constitutive equations relating the stress to kinematical quantities is then determined using the condition that the rate of dissipation is maximal providing that the relevant constraints are met. The proposed model is applied to three-dimensional micropillar compression, and its features, both on the level of modelling and computer simulations, are discussed and compared to relevant studies.

Since the absence of any dissipative mechanism in the model prevents us from establishing even a local-in-time existence result in two spatial dimensions for a spatially periodic problem, we propose two regularisations. For such regularized problems we obtain well-posedness of the planar, spatially periodic problem. In contrast with existing results, we prove ours for a regularizing term present solely in the evolution equation for the stress.

We provide numerical simulations of an incompressible pressure-thickening and shear-thinning lubricant flowing in a plane slider bearing. We study the influence of several parameters, namely the ratio of the characteristic lengths $\varepsilon>0$ (with $\varepsilon\searrow0$ representing the Reynolds lubrication approximation); the coefficient of the exponential pressure--viscosity relation $α^*\geq0$; the parameter $G^*\geq0$ related to the Carreau--Yasuda shear-thinning model and the modified Reynolds number $\mathrm{Re}_\varepsilon\geq0$. The finite element approximations to the steady isothermal flows are computed without resorting to the lubrication approximation. We obtain the numerical solutions as long as the variation of the viscous stress $\mathbf{S}=2η(p,\mathrm{tr}\mathbf{D}^2)\mathbf{D}$ with the pressure is limited, say $|\partial\mathbf{S}/\partial p|\leq1$. We show conclusively that the existing practice of avoiding the numerical difficulties by cutting the viscosity off for large pressures leads to results that depend sorely on the artificial cut-off parameter. We observe that the piezoviscous rheology generates pressure differences across the fluid film.

Relative impulse responses between microphones are usually long and dense due to the reverberant acoustic environment. Estimating them from short and noisy recordings poses a long-standing challenge of audio signal processing. In this paper we apply a novel strategy based on ideas of Compressed Sensing. Relative transfer function (RTF) corresponding to the relative impulse response can often be estimated accurately from noisy data but only for certain frequencies. This means that often only an incomplete measurement of the RTF is available. A complete RTF estimate can be obtained through finding its sparsest representation in the time-domain: that is, through computing the sparsest among the corresponding relative impulse responses. Based on this approach, we propose to estimate the RTF from noisy data in three steps. First, the RTF is estimated using any conventional method such as the non-stationarity-based estimator by Gannot et al. or through Blind Source Separation. Second, frequencies are determined for which the RTF estimate appears to be accurate. Third, the RTF is reconstructed through solving a weighted $\ell_1$ convex program, which we propose to solve via a computationally efficient variant of the SpaRSA (Sparse Reconstruction by Separable Approximation) algorithm. An extensive experimental study with real-world recordings has been conducted. It has been shown that the proposed method is capable of improving many conventional estimators used as the first step in most situations.

As-vacancies (V_As) in La-1111-systems, which are nominally non-magnetic defects, are shown to create in their vicinity by symmetry ferromagnetically oriented local magnetic moments due to the strong, covalent bonds with neighboring Fe atoms that they break. From microscopic theory in terms of an appropriately modified Anderson-Wolff model, we find that the moment formation results in a substantially enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility in both the normal and superconducting (SC) state. Despite the V_As act as magnetic scatterers, they do not deteriorate SC properties which can even be improved by V_As by suppressing a competing or coexisting commensurate spin density wave or its remnant fluctuations. Due to the induced local magnetic moments an s_++-scenario in related systems is unlikely.

Applying exact diagonalization and DMRG methods to fit their INS and magnetization M(H) data, supported by two independent microscopic methods (5-band Hubbard model and LSDA+U calculations), we demonstrate that LiCuVO4 exhibits strong inchain frustration with alpha =-J2/J1 < 1, i.e. strong coupling of the HAC at odds with (i). An alternative phenomenological set in accord with various experimental results is proposed. In order to describe behavior of various liquid-like materials at high pressures, incompressible fluid models with pressure dependent viscosity seem to be a suitable choice. In the context of implicit constitutive relations involving the Cauchy stress and the velocity gradient these models are consistent with standard procedures of continuum mechanics. Understanding mathematical properties of governing equations is connected with various types of idealization, some of them lead to studies in unbounded domains. In this paper, we first bring up several characteristic features concerning fluids with pressure dependent viscosity. Then we study three-dimensional flows of a class of fluids with the viscosity depending on the pressure and the shear rate. By means of higher differentiability methods we establish large data existence of a weak solution for the Cauchy problem. This seems to be a first result that analyzes flows of considered fluids in unbounded domains. Even in the context of purely shear rate dependent fluids of a power-law type the result presented here improves some of earlier works.

Abstract:
Based on density functional calculations, we present a detailed theoretical study of the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of the quasi-one dimensional chain cuprate Li_2ZrCuO_4 (Li_2CuZrO_4). Based on density functional calculations, we present a detailed theoretical study of the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of the quasi-one dimensional chain cuprate Li_2ZrCuO_4 (Li_2CuZrO_4). For the relevant ratio of the next-nearest neighbor exchange J_2 to the nearest neighbor exchange J_1 we find alpha = -J_2/J_1 = 0.22\pm0.02 which is very close to the critical point at 1/4. Owing this vicinity to a ferromagnetic-helical critical point, we study in detail the influence of structural peculiarities such as the reported Li disorder and the non-planar chain geometry on the magnetic interactions combining the results of LDA based tight-binding models with LDA+U derived exchange parameters. Our investigation is complemented by an exact diagonalization study of a multi-band Hubbard model for finite clusters predicting a strong temperature dependence of the optical conductivity for Li_2ZrCuO_4.

We present an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of Li2CuO2 detecting the long sought quasi-1D magnetic excitations with a large dispersion along the CuO2-chains studied up to 25 meV. The total dispersion is governed by a surprisingly large ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor exchange integral J1=-228 K. An anomalous quartic dispersion near the zone center and a pronounced minimum near (0,0.11,0.5) r.l.u. (corresponding to a spiral excitation with a pitch angle about 41 degree point to the vicinity of a 3D FM-spiral critical point. The leading exchange couplings are obtained applying standard linear spin-wave theory. The 2nd neighbor inter-chain interaction suppresses a spiral state and drives the FM in-chain ordering below the Ne'el temperature. The obtained exchange parameters are in agreement with the results for a realistic five-band extended Hubbard Cu 3d O 2p model and L(S)DA+U predictions.

We report theoretical values for the unscreened plasma frequencies Omega_p of several Fe pnictides obtained from DFT based calculations within the LDA and compare them with experimental plasma frequencies obtained from reflectivity data. The sizable renormalization observed for all considered compounds points to the presence of many-body effects beyond the LDA. From the large empirical background dielectric constant of about 12-15, we estimate a large arsenic polarizability of about 9.5 +- 1.2 Angstroem^3 where the details depend on the polarizabilities of the remaining ions taken from the literature. This large polarizability can significantly reduce the value of the Coulomb repulsion U_d about 4 eV on iron known from iron oxides to a level of 2 eV or below. In general, this result points to rather strong polaronic effects as suggested by G.A. Sawatzky et al., in Refs. arXiv:0808.1390 and arXiv:0811.0214 (Berciu et al.). Possible consequences for the conditions of a formation of bipolarons are discussed, too. From the extrapolated muon spin rotation penetration depth data at T= 0 and the experimental Omega_p we estimate the total coupling constant lambda_tot for the el-boson interaction within the Eliashberg-theory adopting a single band approximation. For LaFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 a weak to intermediately strong coupling regime and a quasi-clean limit behaviour are found. For a pronounced multiband case we obtain a constraint for various intraband coupling constants which in principle allows for a sizable strong coupling in bands with either slow electrons or holes.

The optical conductivity sigma(omega) is calculated at finite temperature T for CuO_2 chain clusters within a pd-Hubbard model. Data at T = 300 K for Li_2CuO_2 are reanalyzed within this approach. The relative weights of Zhang-Rice singlet and triplet charge excitations near 2.5 and 4 eV, respectively, depend strongly on T, and a rather dramatic dependence of sigma(omega) on the ratio of the first to second neighbor exchange integrals is predicted. On the basis of these results, information about exchange interactionsfor frustrated edge-shared cuprates can be obtained from T-dependent optical spectra. Our results are also relevant for magnetically weakly coupled wide-gap insulators in general.

Analyzing its measured susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat cp(T,H) within a Heisenberg model, we show that the ratio of the 2nd to the 1st neighbor exchange integrals alpha=-J2/J1 of the order of 0.3, i.e. it is close to the critical value alpha_c=1/4. Comparing with related chain cuprates we explain the rather strong field dependence of cp, the monotonous down shift of the peak of chi(T), and its increase for alpha approaching 1/4 + 0.

A semi-quantitative cluster approach is developed to describe the charge transfer (CT) electron-hole excitations in insulating cuprates in a rather wide energy range up to 10- 15 eV. It generalizes the Zhang-Ng (ZN) model of CT excitons by considering the complete set of Cu3d and O2p orbitals within the CuO4 embedded molecular cluster method and by introducing one-center (intra-center) Frenkel-like and two-center (inter-center) excitons. Special attention is paid to the transition matrix element effects both in optical and electron energy loss spectra (EELS). In the latter case we obtain the momentum dependence of matrix elements both for intra-center and inter-center transitions. We are able to give a semi-quantitative description of the optical and EELS spectra for a large number of 0D (like CuB2O4), 1D (Sr2CuO3) and 2D (like Sr2CuO2Cl2) insulating cuprates in a unifying manner. By comparing our analysis with the experimental data we find that the CT gap in insulating cuprates is determined by nearly degenerate intra-center localized excitations and inter-center CT excitons. The corresponding EELS intensity is found to be strongly k-dependent: even for isolated exciton it sharply decreases by approaching the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary. It is shown that the interaction of two-center excitons can result in destructive interference effects with an intensity compensation point.

We consider electronic structure and superconductivity aspects in field-doped polyacenes (PA) and C60. Within a modified Thomas-Fermi approach for typical experimental values of the surface charge density the injected charge is confined to a monolayer. The electron-phonon coupling constant for internal modes is estimated using the work of Devos et al. (Phys. Rev. B 58, 8236 (1998)) and the density of states N(0) estimated from a 2D-one-band model derived from a full potential LDA band structure calculation for bulk anthracene. The large differences in the reported Tc-values for n-doped PA and C60 are ascribed to enhanced empirical Coulomb pseudopotentials for polyacenes.
