Cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) is a modern technique for high-precision energy spectroscopy, in which the energy of a charged particle in a magnetic field is measured via the frequency of the emitted cyclotron radiation. The He6-CRES collaboration aims to use CRES to probe beyond the standard model physics at the TeV scale by performing high-resolution and low-background beta-decay spectroscopy of ${}^6\textrm{He}$ and ${}^{19}\textrm{Ne}$. Having demonstrated the first observation of individual, high-energy (0.1 -- 2.5 MeV) positrons and electrons via their cyclotron radiation, the experiment provides a novel window into the radiation of relativistic charged particles in a waveguide via the time-derivative (slope) of the cyclotron radiation frequency, $\mathrm{d}f_\textrm{c}/\mathrm{d}t$. We show that analytic predictions for the total cyclotron radiation power emitted by a charged particle in circular and rectangular waveguides are approximately consistent with the Larmor formula, each scaling with the Lorentz factor of the underlying $e^\pm$ as $γ^4$. This hypothesis is corroborated with experimental CRES slope data.

Solution-based methods represent the most widespread approach used to deposit hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite films for low-cost but efficient solar cells. However, solution-process techniques offer limited control over film morphology and crystallinity, and most importantly do not allow sequential film deposition to produce perovskite-perovskite heterostructures. Here the successful deposition of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) thin films by RF-magnetron sputtering is reported, an industry-tested method to grow large area devices with precisely controlled stoichiometry. MAPI films are grown starting from a single-target made of CH3NH3I (MAI) and PbI2. Films are single-phase, with a barely detectable content of unreacted PbI2, full surface coverage and thickness ranging from less than 200 nm to more than 3 μm. Light absorption and emission properties of the deposited films are comparable to as-grown solution-processed MAPI films. The development of vapor-phase deposition methods is of interest to advance perovskite photovoltaic devices with the possibility of fabricating perovskite multijunction solar cells or multicolor bright light-emitting devices in the whole visible spectrum.

Phosphorus is one of the most promising anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Little is known about the structural mechanism of Na/P cycling due to the fact that only one of the structures involved (Na3P) is crystalline. Using operando X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT) analysed by Rietveld and pair distribution (PDF) methods combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations we show that the sodiation and desodiation mechanisms of phosphorus are very different. Sodiation follows the thermodynamic path of lowest energy from P via NaP to Na3P while desodiation follows a kinetically controlled deintercalation mechanism in which the layered Na3-xP type structure is maintained until P nanoclusters form. Using XRD-CT allows analysis of the 3D structure of the anode, but most importantly, removes the contributions from the sample container and other battery components, particularly important for PDF analysis.

These variations clearly indicate that the bandgap value and the electronic structure of MAPI change across the phase transition.

We show that the pressure-induced metal-insulator transition (MIT) in LaMnO$_3$ is fundamentally different from the Mott-Hubbard transition and is percolative in nature, with the measured resistivity obeying the percolation scaling laws. Using the Gutzwiller method to treat correlation effects in a model Hamiltonian that includes both Coulomb and Jahn-Teller interactions, we show, One, that the MIT is driven by a competition between electronic correlation and the electron-lattice interaction, an issue that has been long debated, and Two, that with compressed volume, the system has a tendency towards phase separation into insulating and metallic regions, consisting, respectively, of Jahn-Teller distorted and undistorted octahedra. This tendency manifests itself in a mixed phase of intermixed insulating and metallic regions in the experiment. Conduction in the mixed phase occurs by percolation and the MIT occurs when the metallic volume fraction, steadily increasing with pressure, exceeds the percolation threshold $v_c \approx 0.29$. Measured high-pressure resistivity follows the percolation scaling laws quite well, establishing the percolative nature of conduction, and the temperature dependence follows the Efros-Shklovskii variable-range hop** behavior for granular materials.

We evaluate the spectral weight dependence on pressure comparing it to that previously found upon do**. The whole optical results indicate that lattice modifications can not be recognized as the only parameter determining the low-energy electrodynamics in these compounds.

We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C$_{22}$H$_{14}$) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the phonon peaks experimentally observed . Through a detailed analysis of the phonon eigenvectors, We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a \sim 20 % compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure. The Grueneisen parameter of the 1380 cm^{-1} a_1 Raman peak ($γ_p=0.1$) is much lower than the effective value ($γ_d=0.8$) due to K do**. This is an indication that the phonon softening in K doped samples is mainly due to charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling.

Theoretical analysis indicate the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting mechanisms of these systems, with different emphasis on inter- and intra-molecular vibrations, depending on the approximations used. Here we present a combined experimental and ab-initio study of the Raman and infrared spectrum of undoped solid picene, which allows us to unanbiguously assign the vibrational modes. This combined study enables the identification of the modes which couple strongly to electrons and hence can play an important role in the superconducting properties of the doped samples.

The results clearly demonstrates that the local structure plays a fundamental role in the protonation process. Oxygen vacancy creation by acceptor do** reduces the local structure symmetry which is then restored upon water uptake. This mechanism mainly involves the Ba-O shell which flexibility seems to be at the basis of the proton conduction mechanism, thus providing a direct insight on the design of optimal proton conducting materials.

The pressure effects on the JT distortion of three representative compounds belonging to the LaMn_1-xGa_xO_3 (x= 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) family was widely investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. A compound with a fully JT distorted structure (x=0.2), one with regular octahedra (x=0.6) and one in an intermediate configuration (x=0.3) were selected. A pressure induced transitions from the orthorhombic Pbnm phase towards structures with higher symmetry were observed in all the samples. Both Raman and X-ray data confirm that the most important structural effect of pressure is that of reducing the octahedral distortion. The appearance of a feature in the lattice parameter behavior connected to a structural instability was also detected, pointing out the key role of the JT distortion in stabilizing the manganite structures. On the other hand, the complete suppression of the JT distortion in the high-pressure phases cannot be claimed. The Raman spectra collected from more distorted compounds (x=0.2, 0.3) reveal clearly the coexistence of domains of distorted and more regular octahedra in a certain pressure range. The first sketch of the Pressure vs. Ga-content phase diagram was drawn.

We have measured the variation of oxygen content as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure by means of thermogravimetry coupled to chemical titration analysis. On selected samples of accurately known oxygen content we have undertaken a systematic investigation of their structural, thermal and magnetic properties by means of x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and magnetometry. The overall results gained by this study confirm the central role of oxygen content on the properties of these materials suggesting that, for the Ho composition, even very slight variation of the order of delta=0.01 has a dramatic influence on the magnetic and transport properties of the samples. This study presents correlations between the structural and transport properties of pure and doped neodymium cobaltate, a compound of great interest for its foreseen applications as catalyst, sensor and thermoelectric material. Neutron and x-ray powder diffraction data have been combined to carefully determine lattice constants and atomic positions and four probe direct current conductivity and thermoelectric power measurements allowed us to follow the thermal evolution of the transport properties of these compounds. The dramatic improvement of the room temperature conductivity of Nd0.8Ca0.2CoO3 with respect to the pure and the Na-doped compound is explained in terms of a different spin-state for the Co ions within this structure. The higher conductivity and the absence of anomalies in the thermal expansion makes the Ca-doped compound more attractive than the pure NdCoO3 in view of possible applications. The experimental data and the Co environment analysis here discussed, in particular bond lengths distortion and bending angles, are fully consistent with a spin state (low to intermediate) transition in NdCoO3

La2Mo2O9 (LAMOX) is a fast oxygen ion conductor which shows high oxygen ion conductivities comparable to those of yttria-sabilized zirconia (YSZ) . LAMOX is subject to a structural phase transition from the non-conductive monoclinic form to the highly-conductive cubic form at about 580C. The origin of the conductivity in cubic LAMOX has been suggested to be due to a "disorder" in the O sub-lattice without any insight into the real distribution of the oxygen ion. In this paper, thanks to the application of the neutron atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, we provided evidences that the local structure of the cubic polymorph of LAMOX is exactly the same of that of the monoclinic phase thus indicating that the structural phase transition is actually a transition from a static to a dynamic distribution of the oxygen defects. This work represent the first application of the atomic-pair distribution function analysis to the study of an oxygen fast-oxide ion conductor and clearly indicates that a more reliable and detailed description of their local structure, particularly in the highly conductive phases, and can lead to a better comprehension of the structure-property correlation, which is the starting point for the design of new and optimized functional materials.

Raman and combined trasmission and reflectivity mid infrared measurements have been carried out on monoclinic VO$_2$ at room temperature over the 0-19 GPa and 0-14 GPa pressure ranges, respectively. The pressure dependence obtained for both lattice dynamics and optical gap shows a remarkable stability of the system up to P*$\sim$10 GPa. Evidence of subtle modifications of V ion arrangements within the monoclinic lattice together with the onset of a metallization process via band gap filling are observed for P$>$P*. Differently from ambient pressure, where the VO$_2$ metal phase is found only in conjunction with the rutile structure above 340 K, a new room temperature metallic phase coupled to a monoclinic structure appears accessible in the high pressure regime, thus opening to new important queries on the physics of VO$_2$.

The deposited films are all completely oriented and epitaxial and characterized by a nanocrystalline morphology. As-deposited films have an average roughness around 1 nm while after the thermal treatment this increases up to 20 nm while preserving the nanocrystalline morphology. All the films deposited on SrTiO3 have shown to be under a certain degree of tensile strain while those on the LaAlO3 experience a compressive strain thus suggesting that at about 50 nm the films are not fully relaxed, even after the thermal treatment. For the x=0.2 composition three different thickness have been investigated revealing an increased strain for the thinner films.

In this work we studied, by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction as a function of temperature, the La1.4Sr0.8Ca0.8Mn2O7 bilayered manganite for two different annealing treatments. Out data allowed us to shown, for the first time, the absence of long-range magnetic order in this optimally doped bilayered manganite where the A-site of the structure is doped with equal proportions of different isovalent cations (Ca and Sr). The system, however, presents defined IM transitions which suggest that the transport properties are not linked to the evolution of long-range order and that two dimensional spin ordering in the layers of the perovskite blocks may be sufficient to 'assist' the hole hop**. Possible reason for the suppression of magnetic order induced by the Ca do** is a size effect coupled to the cation size mismatch between the Sr and Ca ions.

The results of the synthesis and characterization of the optimally doped (La)1.4(Sr1-yCay)1.6Mn2O7 solid solution with y=0, 0.25 and 0.5 are reported. By progressively replacing the Sr with the smaller Ca, while kee** fixed the hole-concentration due to the divalent dopant, the 'size effect' of the cation itself on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of the bilayered manganite has been analysed. Two different annealing treatments of the solid solution, in pure oxygen and in pure argon, allowed also to study the effect of the oxygen content variation. Structure and electronic properties of the samples have been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Magnetoresistivity and static magnetization measurements have been carried out to complete the samples characterization. Oxygen annealing of the solid solution, that showed a limit for about y=0.5, induces an increase of the Mn average valence state and a transition of the crystal structure from tetragonal to orthorhombic while the argon annealing induces an oxygen under-stoichiometry and, in turn, a reduction of the Mn average valence state. Along with the Ca substitution, the Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra is reduced. This has been directly connected to a general enhancement of the transport properties induced by the Ca-do**. For the same cation composition, oxygen over-stoichiometry leads to higher metal-insulator transition temperatures and lower resistivity values. Curie temperatures (TC) reduce by increasing the Ca-do**. The lower TC for all the annealed samples with respect to the 'as prepared' ones are connected to the strong influence on the magnetic interaction of the point defects due to the oxygen content variation.

Our investigation has shown that highly oriented single phase thin films of NCO and NSCO can be successfully deposited by means of rf-sputtering if the substrates is heated at high temperatures (700C); lower substrate temperature has shown to lead to multi-phase materials with a low crystallinity degree . LAO substrate showed to give origin to a prefect match of the out-of-plane lattice constant of the NSCO target material.

In general, do** favours the carrier motion and, from a magnetic point of view, the set-up a spin-glass state. Moreover, structural parameters show an anisotropy in the lattice constant variation, with the tetragonal distortion increasing as the cell volume reduces, which may suggest a variation in the relative nature of the orbital character of the eg electrons along with the overall cation size.

The experimental investigation has been realized with the aid of X-ray powder diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, thermogravimetry, electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements, and electron paramagnetic resonance. We demonstrate that the effect of ruthenium do** on the studied LNMRO compounds is not only directly related to the Ru/Mn substitution and to the Ru oxidation state but also indirectly connected to the oxygen content in the sample. Our data show that ruthenium addition can improve electrical and magnetic properties of non-optimally (low) cation doped manganites, causing an increase of the TC value and the insurgence of MR effect, as observed for the x = 0.05 and y = 0.05 sample.

Results indicate that cation vacancies are distributed differently for the different crystal structures and dopant ion type. In particular it is shown that knowledge of the total vacancies concentration alone is not enough to fully characterize the physical properties of manganites and that their distribution between the A and B sites of the perovskite structure plays a crucial role which should be taken into account in future studies.

At the same time, a significant shortening of the apical Mn-O(2) bond is observed in the range where the J-T distortion is reduced. The overall data gained by this study may suggest a shift of electronic density from axial to planar eg orbitals with T. This trend is explained considering of the presence of short range magnetic interaction well above TC.

La1-xCaxMnO3+delta and La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples with well defined cation molecularity and oxygen contents are analyzed with XRPD, electrical conductivity, electron paramagnetic resonance and static magnetization measurements. Point defects are introduced in the structure by: i) aliovalent cation do** (substitutional defects), ii) oxygen over-stoichiometry (cation vacancies) and iii) oxygen under-stoichiometry (oxygen vacancies). The cation do** mainly influences the material by affecting the tolerance factor and the oxidation of the Mn ions; the cation vacancies affect the magnetic properties by interrupting the interaction paths between Mn4+-Mn3+ ions whereas the oxygen vacancies have a stronger influence on the structural and electrical properties and act on the magnetic properties by the overall decrease on the Mn4+ amount and by the creation of sample regions with different magnetic features. We can state that the basic magnetic and electrical behaviors of the Ca- and Na-doped lanthanum manganite compounds are driven from the Mn4+-Mn3+ ratio and all the peculiar behaviors are indeed caused by defects, concentration gradient and, more generally, by lattice disorder.

Pure, single phase materials were obtained with grain size around 35 nm for the sol-gel samples and around 55 nm for the propellant ones, which moreover present a more broaden grain size distribution. For both series a superparamagnetic behaviour was evidenced by means of magnetisation and EPR measurements with peculiar features ascribable to the different grain sizes and morphology. Preliminary magnetoresistivity measurements show enhanced low-field (< 1 T) magnetoresistance values which suggest an interesting applicative use of these manganites.

The activation energy for the diffusion process is 0.35 eV for the LNMO film on SrTiO3 (100) and 0.66 for the LNMO film on SrTiO3 (110).
