An antinorm is a concave analogue of a norm. In contrast to norms, antinorms are not defined on the entire space $R^d$ but on a cone $K\subset R^d$. They are applied in the matrix analysis, optimal control, and dynamical systems. Their level sets are called conic bodies and (in case of piecewise-linear antinorms) conic polyhedra. The basic facts and notions of the "concave analysis" of antinorms such as separation theorems, duality, polars, Minkowski functionals, etc., are similar to those from the standard convex analysis. There are, however, some significant differences. One of them is the existence of many self-dual objects. We prove that there are infinitely many families of autopolar conic bodies and polyhedra in the cone $K=R^d_+$. For $d=2$, this gives a complete classification of self-dual antinorms, while for $d\ge 3$, there are counterexamples.

In this paper we study the problem of finding $(ε, φ)$-expander decompositions of a graph in the streaming model, in particular for dynamic streams of edge insertions and deletions. The goal is to partition the vertex set so that every component induces a $φ$-expander, while the number of inter-cluster edges is only an $ε$ fraction of the total volume. It was recently shown that there exists a simple algorithm to construct a $(O(φ\log n), φ)$-expander decomposition of an $n$-vertex graph using $\widetilde{O}(n/φ^2)$ bits of space [Filtser, Kapralov, Makarov, ITCS'23]. This result calls for understanding the extent to which a dependence in space on the sparsity parameter $φ$ is inherent. We move towards answering this question on two fronts. We prove that a $(O(φ\log n), φ)$-expander decomposition can be found using $\widetilde{O}(n)$ space, for every $φ$. At the core of our result is the first streaming algorithm for computing boundary-linked expander decompositions, a recently introduced strengthening of the classical notion [Goranci et al., SODA'21]. The key advantage is that a classical sparsifier [Fung et al., STOC'11], with size independent of $φ$, preserves the cuts inside the clusters of a boundary-linked expander decomposition within a multiplicative error. Notable algorithmic applications use sequences of expander decompositions, in particular one often repeatedly computes a decomposition of the subgraph induced by the inter-cluster edges (e.g., the seminal work of Spielman and Teng on spectral sparsifiers [Spielman, Teng, SIAM Journal of Computing 40(4)], or the recent maximum flow breakthrough [Chen et al., FOCS'22], among others). We prove that any streaming algorithm that computes a sequence of $(O(φ\log n), φ)$-expander decompositions requires ${\widetildeΩ}(n/φ)$ bits of space, even in insertion only streams.

It allows, after a close to linear time preprocessing of the input dataset, to find an approximately nearest neighbor of any fixed query in sublinear time in the dataset size. The resulting data structure is randomized and succeeds with high probability for every fixed query.
In many modern applications of nearest neighbor search the queries are chosen adaptively. In this paper, we study the robustness of the locality-sensitive hashing to adaptive queries in Hamming space. We present a simple adversary that can, under mild assumptions on the initial point set, provably find a query to the approximate near neighbor search data structure that the data structure fails on. Crucially, our adaptive algorithm finds the hard query exponentially faster than random sampling.

In this paper we initiate the study of expander decompositions of a graph $G=(V, E)$ in the streaming model of computation. The goal is to find a partitioning $\mathcal{C}$ of vertices $V$ such that the subgraphs of $G$ induced by the clusters $C \in \mathcal{C}$ are good expanders, while the number of intercluster edges is small. Expander decompositions are classically constructed by a recursively applying balanced sparse cuts to the input graph. In this paper we give the first implementation of such a recursive sparsest cut process using small space in the dynamic streaming model.
Our main algorithmic tool is a new type of cut sparsifier that we refer to as a power cut sparsifier - it preserves cuts in any given vertex induced subgraph (or, any cluster in a fixed partition of $V$) to within a $(δ, ε)$-multiplicative/additive error with high probability. The power cut sparsifier uses $\tilde{O}(n/εδ)$ space and edges, which we show is asymptotically tight up to polylogarithmic factors in $n$ for constant $δ$.

We present a sublinear query algorithm for outputting a near-optimal low-rank approximation to any positive semidefinite Toeplitz matrix $T \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times d}$. In particular, for any integer rank $k \leq d$ and $ε,δ> 0$, our algorithm makes $\tilde{O} \left (k^2 \cdot \log(1/δ) \cdot \text{poly}(1/ε) \right )$ queries to the entries of $T$ and outputs a rank $\tilde{O} \left (k \cdot \log(1/δ)/ε\right )$ matrix $\tilde{T} \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times d}$ such that $\| T - \tilde{T}\|_F \leq (1+ε) \cdot \|T-T_k\|_F + δ\|T\|_F$. Here, $\|\cdot\|_F$ is the Frobenius norm and $T_k$ is the optimal rank-$k$ approximation to $T$, given by projection onto its top $k$ eigenvectors. $\tilde{O}(\cdot)$ hides $\text{polylog}(d) $ factors. Our algorithm is \emph{structure-preserving}, in that the approximation $\tilde{T}$ is also Toeplitz. A key technical contribution is a proof that any positive semidefinite Toeplitz matrix in fact has a near-optimal low-rank approximation which is itself Toeplitz. Surprisingly, this basic existence result was not previously known. Building on this result, along with the well-established off-grid Fourier structure of Toeplitz matrices [Cybenko'82], we show that Toeplitz $\tilde{T}$ with near optimal error can be recovered with a small number of random queries via a leverage-score-based off-grid sparse Fourier sampling scheme.

A motif is a frequently occurring subgraph of a given directed or undirected graph $G$. Motifs capture higher order organizational structure of $G$ beyond edge relationships, and, therefore, have found wide applications such as in graph clustering, community detection, and analysis of biological and physical networks to name a few. In these applications, the cut structure of motifs plays a crucial role as vertices are partitioned into clusters by cuts whose conductance is based on the number of instances of a particular motif, as opposed to just the number of edges, crossing the cuts.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of a motif cut sparsifier. We show that one can compute in polynomial time a sparse weighted subgraph $G'$ with only $\widetilde{O}(n/ε^2)$ edges such that for every cut, the weighted number of copies of $M$ crossing the cut in $G'$ is within a $1+ε$ factor of the number of copies of $M$ crossing the cut in $G$, for every constant size motif $M$.
Our work carefully combines the viewpoints of both graph sparsification and hypergraph sparsification. We sample edges which requires us to extend and strengthen the concept of cut sparsifiers introduced in the seminal work of to the motif setting. We adapt the importance sampling framework through the viewpoint of hypergraph sparsification by deriving the edge sampling probabilities from the strong connectivity values of a hypergraph whose hyperedges represent motif instances. Finally, an iterative sparsification primitive inspired by both viewpoints is used to reduce the number of edges in $G$ to nearly linear.
In addition, we present a strong lower bound ruling out a similar result for sparsification with respect to induced occurrences of motifs.

We consider the well-studied Sparse Fourier transform problem, where one aims to quickly recover an approximately Fourier $k$-sparse vector $\widehat{x} \in \mathbb{C}^{n^d}$ from observing its time domain representation $x$. In the exact $k$-sparse case the best known dimension-independent algorithm runs in near cubic time in $k$ and it is unclear whether a faster algorithm like in low dimensions is possible. Beyond that, all known approaches either suffer from an exponential dependence on the dimension $d$ or can only tolerate a trivial amount of noise. This is in sharp contrast with the classical FFT of Cooley and Tukey, which is stable and completely insensitive to the dimension of the input vector: its runtime is $O(N\log N)$ in any dimension $d$ for $N=n^d$. Our work aims to address the above issues.
First, we provide a translation/reduction of the exactly $k$-sparse FT problem to a concrete tree exploration task which asks to recover $k$ leaves in a full binary tree under certain exploration rules. Subsequently, we provide (a) an almost quadratic in $k$ time algorithm for this task, and (b) evidence that a strongly subquadratic time for Sparse FT via this approach is likely impossible. We achieve the latter by proving a conditional quadratic time lower bound on sparse polynomial multipoint evaluation (the classical non-equispaced sparse FT) which is a core routine in the aforementioned translation. Thus, our results combined can be viewed as an almost complete understanding of this approach, which is the only known approach that yields sublinear time dimension-independent Sparse FT algorithms.
Subsequently, we provide a robustification of our algorithm, yielding a robust cubic time algorithm under bounded $\ell_2$ noise. This requires proving new structural properties of the recently introduced adaptive aliasing filters combined with a variety of new techniques and ideas.

It was found that if the impedances characterizing the scattering part are different from those describing the leads, a new effect of double-sided unidirectional reflectivity emerges. In this case the vanishing of reflectivity occurs either for the left or right reflectivity, depending on the frequency of scattering wave. It is shown that the alternation of the unidirectional reflectivity from the left to the right can occur even if the corresponding Hamiltonian is non-PT-symmetric. It is shown that for non-equal widths of $(a,b)$ layers, i.e., when the corresponding Hamiltonian is non-PT-symmetric, the system exhibits the scattering properties similar to those of truly PT-symmetric models provided that without loss/gain the structure presents the matched quarter stack. The inclusion of the loss/gain terms leads to an emergence of a finite number of spectral bands characterized by real values of the Bloch index. Each spectral band consists of a central region where the transmission coefficient $T_N \geq 1$, and two side regions with $T_N \leq 1$. At the borders between these regions the unidirectional reflectivity occurs. Also, the set of Fabry-Perrot resonances with $T_N=1$ are found in spite of the presence of loss/gain.

The method is based on consecutive linear modulations of initially uncorrelated sequence into a correlated one. Each step of modulation increases the correlations until the desired level has been reached. Robustness and efficiency for the proposed algorithm are tested by generating sequences with inverse power-law correlations. The substantial increase in the strength of correlation in the iterative method with respect to the single-step filtering generation is shown for all studied correlation functions. Our results can be used for design of disordered superlattices, waveguides, and surfaces with selective transport properties.

Based on detailed numerical and analytical calculations, we can unambiguously identify the origin of these reflection resonances to be higher-order correlations in the surface disorder profile which are typically neglected in similar studies of the same system. A remarkable feature of this new effect is that it relies on the longitudinal correlations in the step profile, although individual step heights are random and thus completely uncorrelated. The corresponding resonances are very pronounced and robust with respect to ensemble averaging, and lead to an enhancement of wave reflection by more than one order of magnitude.

We study localization properties of the eigenstates and wave transport in one-dimensional system consisting of a set of barriers/wells of fixed thickness and random heights. The inherent peculiarity of the system resulting in the enhanced Anderson localization, is the presence of the resonances emerging due to the coherent interaction of the waves reflected from the interfaces between wells/barriers. Our theoretical approach allows to derive the localization length in infinite samples both out of the resonances and close to them. We examine how the transport properties of finite samples can be described in terms of this length. It is shown that the analytical expressions obtained by standard methods for continuous random potentials can be used in our discrete model, in spite of the presence of resonances that cannot be described by conventional theories. We also discuss whether the single parameter scaling is valid in view of the suggested modification of the theory. All our results are illustrated with numerical data manifesting an excellent agreement with the theory.

We study the problem of non-conventional Anderson localization emerging in bilayer periodic-on-average structures with alternating layers of materials with positive and negative refraction indices $n_a$ and $n_b$. Main attention is paid to the model of the so-called quarter stack with perfectly matched layers (the same unperturbed by disorder impedances, $Z_a=Z_b$, and optical path lengths, $n_ad_a=|n_b| d_b$, with $d_a$, $d_b$ being the thicknesses of basic layers). As was recently numerically discovered, in such structures with weak fluctuations of refractive indices (compositional disorder) the localization length $L_{loc}$ is enormously large in comparison with the conventional localization occurring in the structures with positive refraction indices only. In this paper we develop a new approach which allows us to derive the expression for $L_{loc}$ for weak disorder and any wave frequency $ω$. In the limit $ω\rightarrow 0$ one gets a quite specific dependence, $L^{-1}_{loc}\proptoσ^4ω^8$ which is obtained within the fourth order of perturbation theory. We also analyze the interplay between two types of disorder, when in addition to the fluctuations of $n_a$, $n_b$ the thicknesses $d_a$, $d_b$ slightly fluctuate as well (positional disorder). We show how the conventional localization recovers with an addition of positional disorder.

The electromagnetic field is transferred from the irradiated side of a slab of layered superconductor to the other one by excited waveguide modes (WGMs) which do not decay deep into the slab, contrary to metals, where the enhanced light transmission is caused by the excitation of the evanescent surface waves. Designing the boundary profile is thus a promising approach for transmission and band-gap engineering with many applications. By performing an experimental study of microwave transmission through rough waveguides we demonstrate that a recently proposed surface scattering theory can be employed to predict the measured transmission properties from the boundary profiles and vice versa. A new key ingredient of this theory is a scattering mechanism which depends on the squared gradient of the surface profiles. We demonstrate the non-trivial effects of this scattering mechanism by detailed mode-resolved microwave measurements and numerical simulations.

This effect may be important in realistic situations due to inevitable long-range correlations in scattering profiles.

This paper presents an analytical study of the coexistence of different transport regimes in quasi-one-dimensional surface-disordered waveguides (or electron conductors). To elucidate main features of surface scattering, the case of two open modes (channels) is considered in great detail. Main attention is paid to the transmission in dependence on various parameters of the model with two types of rough-surface profiles (symmetric and antisymmetric). It is shown that depending on the symmetry, basic mechanisms of scattering can be either enhanced or suppressed. As a consequence, different transport regimes can be realized. Specifically, in the waveguide with symmetric rough boundaries, there are ballistic, localized and coexistence transport regimes. In the waveguide with antisymmetric roughness of lateral walls, another regime of the diffusive transport can arise. Our study allows to reveal the role of the so-called square-gradient scattering which is typically neglected in literature, however, can give a strong impact to the transmission.

A microwave setup for mode-resolved transport measurement in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) structures is presented. We will demonstrate a technique for direct measurement of the Green's function of the system. With its help we will investigate quasi-1D structures with various types of disorder. We will focus on stratified structures, i.e., structures that are homogeneous perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. In this case the interaction between different channels is absent, so wave propagation occurs individually in each open channel. We will apply analytical results developed in the theory of one-dimensional (1D) disordered models in order to explain main features of the quasi-1D transport. The main focus will be selective transport due to long-range correlations in the disorder. In our setup, we can intentionally introduce correlations by changing the positions of periodically spaced brass bars of finite thickness. Because of the equivalence of the stationary Schrödinger equation and the Helmholtz equation, the result can be directly applied to selective electron transport in nanowires, nanostripes, and superlattices.

We develop a perturbative approach that allows one to study the surface scattering in quasi-1D waveguides with rough boundaries. Our approach is based on the construction of an effective ``bulk'' potential of a very complicated structure. The detailed analysis of this potential reveals that apart from the well known terms considered in the previous studies, one should keep specific terms that depend on the square of the derivative of the boundaries. As was found, in spite of an apparent smallness of these square-gradient scattering (SGS) terms, there is a physically important region of parameters, in which they can not be neglected. Our approach also demonstrates that the contribution of the SGS-mechanism of scattering strongly depends on the type of the rough boundaries (uncorrelated, symmetric or antisymmetric)

We study the effect of surface scattering on transport properties in many-mode conducting channels (electron waveguides). Assuming a strong roughness of the surface profiles, we show that there are two independent control parameters that determine statistical properties of the scattering. The first parameter is the ratio of the amplitude of the roughness to the transverse width of the waveguide. The second one, which is typically omitted, is determined by the mean value of the derivative of the profile. This parameter may be large, thus leading to specific properties of scattering. Our results may be used in experimental realizations of the surface scattering of electron waves, as well as for other applications (e.g., for optical and microwave waveguides)

The paper discusses the applicability of WKB and Born (small perturbations) approximations in the problem of the backscattering of quantum particles and classical waves by one-dimensional smooth potentials with amplitudes small compared to the energy of the incident particle (above-barrier scattering). Both deterministic and random potentials are considered. The dependence of the reflection coefficient and localization length on the amplitude and the longitudinal scale of the scattering potential is investigated. It is shown that perturbation and WKB theories are inconsistent in the above-barrier backscattering problem. Not only the solutions but the regions of validity of both methods as well depend strongly on the details of the potential profile, and are individual for each potential. A simple criterion that allows determining the boundary between the applicability domains of WKB and Born approximations is found.

In a unified approach we consider transport properties of 1D and quasi-1D waveguides with rough surfaces. Main attention is paid to the possibility of perfect transmission of waves due to specific long-range correlations in the surface profiles. First, we show how to construct random profiles that lead to a complete transparency of waveguides with one open channel. Then, we present analytical results for many-mode waveguides. It was revealed that by a proper choice of correlations in surface profiles the transmission through such quasi-1D waveguides is described by a coset of non-interacting 1D channels with a perfect transmission along each one. The number of these conducting modes is governed by the control parameter, and can be equal to the total number of channels. Therefore, the waveguides can be completely transparent in some region of frequency of incoming waves. This unexpected phenomenon is discussed in connection with the violation of the single-parameter scaling for surface scattering.

The propagation of waves through such waveguides may reveal a quite unexpected phenomena of a complete transparency for a subset of propagating modes. We found that with a proper choice of long-range correlations one can arrange a perfect transparency of waveguides inside a given frequency window of incoming waves. Transport properties of narrow two-dimensional conducting wires in which the electron scattering is caused by side edges' roughness have been studied. The method for calculating dynamic characteristics of such conductors is proposed which is based on the two-scale representation of the mode wave functions at weak scattering. With this method, fundamentally different {\it by-height} and {\it by-slope} scattering mechanisms associated with edge roughness are discriminated. The results for single-mode systems, previously obtained by conventional methods, are proven to correspond to the former mechanism only. Yet the commonly ignored by-slope scattering is more likely dominant. The electron extinction lengths relevant to this scattering differ substantially in functional structure from those pertinent to the by-height scattering. The transmittance of ultra-quantum wires is calculated over all range of scattering parameters, from ballistic to localized transport of quasi-particles. The obtained dependence of scattering lengths on the disorder parameters is valid qualitatively for arbitrary inter-correlation of the boundaries' defects.

Transport characteristics of pure narrow 2D-conductors, in which the electron scattering is caused by rough side boundaries, have been studied. The conductance of such strips is highly sensitive to the intercorrelation properties of inhomogeneities of the opposite edges. The case with completely correlated statistically identical boundaries (CCB) is a peculiar one. Herein the electron scattering is uniquely due to fluctuations of the asperity slope and is not related to the strip width fluctuations. Owing to this, the electron relaxation lengths, specifically the localization length, depend quite differently on the asperity parameters as compared to the conductors with arbitrarily intercorrelated edges. The method for calculating the dynamical characteristics of the CCB electron waveguides is proposed clear of the restrictions on the asperity height.
