A note on the Lambert W function: Bernstein and Stieltjes properties for a creep model in Linear Viscoelasticity
Abstract: The purpose of this note is to propose an application of the Lambert W function in linear viscoelasticity based on the Bernstein and Stieltjes properties of this function. In particular we recognize the role of the main branch W_0(t) in a peculiar model of creep with two spectral functions in frequency that completely characterize the creep model. In order to calculate these spectral functions, it… ▽ More

Truncated generalized coherent states
Abstract: A generalization of the canonical coherent states of a quantum harmonic oscillator has been performed by requiring the conditions of normalizability, continuity in the label and resolution of the identity operator with a positive weight function. Relying on this approach, in the present scenario coherent states are generalized over the canonical or finite dimensional Fock space of the harmonic osc… ▽ More

Kramers-Kronig relations and the analogy between electromagnetic and mechanical waves
Abstract: The important consequence of the Kramers-Kronig relations (KKrs) is that dissipative behavior in material media inevitably implies the existence of dispersion, i.e., a frequency dependence in the constitutive equations. Basically, the relations are the frequency-domain expression of causality and correspond mathematically to pairs of Hilbert transforms. The relations have many forms and can be obt… ▽ More

Variable-order fractional calculus: a change of perspective
Abstract: Several approaches to the formulation of a fractional theory of calculus of "variable order" have appeared in the literature over the years. Cauchy and signaling problems for the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation
Abstract: In this paper, some known and novel properties of the Cauchy and signaling problems for the one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion-wave equation with the Caputo fractional derivative of order $β,\ 1 \le β\le 2$ are investigated. In particular, their response to a localized disturbance of the initial data is studied. It is known that whereas the diffusion equation describes a process where the d… ▽ More

A class of linear viscoelastic models based on Bessel functions
Abstract: In this paper we investigate a general class of linear viscoelastic models whose creep and relaxation memory functions are expressed in Laplace domain by suitable ratios of modified Bessel functions of contiguous order. In time domain these functions are shown to be expressed by Dirichlet series (that is infinite Prony series). It follows that the corresponding creep compliance and relaxation modu… ▽ More

On infinite series concerning zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind
Abstract: A relevant result independently obtained by Rayleigh and Sneddon on an identity on series involving the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind is derived by an alternative method based on Laplace transforms. Our method leads to a Bernstein function of time, expressed by Dirichlet series, that allows us to recover the Rayleigh-Sneddon sum. We also consider another method arriving at the same r… ▽ More

A dynamic viscoelastic analogy for fluid-filled elastic tubes
Abstract: In this paper we evaluate the dynamic effects of the fluid viscosity for fluid filled elastic tubes in the framework of a linear uni-axial theory. Because of the linear approximation, the effects on the fluid inside the elastic tube are taken into account according to the Womersley theory for a pulsatile flow in a rigid tube. The evolution equations for the response variables are derived by me… ▽ More

George William Scott Blair -- the pioneer of factional calculus in rheology
Abstract: The article shows the pioneering role of the British scientist, Professor G.W.Scott Blair, in the creation of the application of fractional modelling in rheology. Discussion of his results is presented. His approach is highly recognized by the rheological society and is adopted and generalized by his successors. Further development of this branch of Science is briefly described in this article too… ▽ More

Laplace-Laplace analysis of the fractional Poisson process
Abstract: We generate the fractional Poisson process by subordinating the standard Poisson process to the inverse stable subordinator. Our analysis is based on application of the Laplace transform with respect to both arguments of the evolving probability densities.

On the fractional Poisson process and the discretized stable subordinator
Abstract: The fractional Poisson process and the Wright process (as discretization of the stable subordinator) along with their diffusion limits play eminent roles in theory and simulation of fractional diffusion processes. Here we have analyzed these two processes, concretely the corresponding counting number and Erlang processes, the latter being the processes inverse to the former. Furthermore we have ob… ▽ More

On some properties of the Mittag-Leffler function $E_α(-t^α)$, completely monotone for $t > 0$ with $0 < α< 1$
Abstract: We analyse some peculiar properties of the function of the Mittag-Leffler (M-L) type, $e_α(t):= E_α(-t^α)$ for $0 <α< 1$ and $t > 0$, which is known to be completely monotone (CM) with a non negative spectrum of frequencies and times, suitable to model fractional relaxation processes. We first note that these two spectra coincide so providing a universal scaling property of this function. Furtherm… ▽ More

Parametric subordination in fractional diffusion processes
Abstract: We consider simulation of spatially one-dimensional space-time fractional diffusion. Whereas in an earlier paper of ours we have developed the basic theory of what we call parametric subordination via three-fold splitting applied to continuous time random walk with subsequent passage to the diffusion limit, here we go the opposite way. Via Fourier-Laplace manipulations of the relevant fractional p… ▽ More

Random walk models approximating symmetric space-fractional diffusion processes
Abstract: For the symmetric case of space-fractional diffusion processes (whose basic analytic theory has been developed in 1952 by Feller via inversion of Riesz potential operators) we present three random walk models discrete in space and time. We show that for properly scaled transition to vanishing space and time steps these models converge in distribution to the corresponding time-parameterized stable… ▽ More

Becker and Lomnitz rheological models: a comparison
Abstract: The viscoelastic material functions for the Becker and the Lomnitz rheological models, sometimes employed to describe the transient flow of rocks, are studied and compared. Their creep functions, which are known in a closed form, share a similar time dependence and asymptotic behavior. This is also found for the relaxation functions, obtained by solving numerically a Volterra equation of the secon… ▽ More

Fractional Calculus in Wave Propagation Problems
Abstract: Fractional calculus, in allowing integrals and derivatives of any positive order (the term "fractional" kept only for historical reasons), can be considered a branch of mathematical physics which mainly deals with integro-differential equations, where integrals are of convolution form with weakly singular kernels of power law type. In recent decades fractional calculus has won more and more intere… ▽ More
