We present MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) observations of the HI gas in the Klemola31 galaxy group ($z=0.029$), located along the line of sight to the radio-loud quasar PKS2020-370 ($z=1.048$). Four galaxies of the group are detected in HI emission, and HI absorption is also detected in front of PKS2020-370 in Klemola31A. The emission and absorption are somewhat compensating on the line of sight of the quasar, and the derived column density of the absorption appears under-estimated, with respect to the neighbouring emission. A symmetric tilted-ring model of Klemola31A, assuming the absorbing gas in regular rotation in the plane, yields a rather high spin temperature of 530K. An alternative interpretation is that the absorbing gas is extra-planar, which will also account for its non-circular motion. The NaI/CaII ratio also suggests that the absorbing gas is unrelated to cold HI disk. Two of the galaxies in the Klemola group are interacting with a small companion, and reveal typical tidal tails, and velocity perturbations. Only one of the galaxies, ESO400-13, reveals a strong HI deficiency, and a characteristic ram-pressure strip**, with a total asymmetry in the distribution of its gas. Since a small galaxy group as Klemola31 is not expected to host a dense intra-group gas, this galaxy must be crossing the group at a very high velocity, mostly in the sky plane.

Observations of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in the nuclear starburst galaxy NGC 4945 with MeerKAT are presented. We find a large amount of halo gas, previously missed by HI observations, accounting for 6.8% of the total HI mass. This is most likely gas blown into the halo by star formation. Our maps go down to a $3σ$ column density level of $5\times10^{18} cm^{-2}$ . We model the HI distribution using tilted-ring fitting techniques and find a warp on the galaxy's approaching and receding sides. The HI in the northern side of the galaxy appears to be suppressed. This may be the result of ionisation by the starburst activity in the galaxy, as suggested by a previous study. The origin of the warp is unclear but could be due to past interactions or ram pressure strip**. Broad, asymmetric HI absorption lines extending beyond the HI emission velocity channels are present towards the nuclear region of NGC 4945. Such broad lines suggest the existence of a nuclear ring moving at a high circular velocity. This is supported by the clear rotation patterns in the HI absorption velocity field. The asymmetry of the absorption spectra can be caused by outflows or inflows of gas in the nuclear region of NGC 4945. The continuum map shows small extensions on both sides of the galaxy's major axis that might be signs of outflows resulting from the starburst activity.

ESO 149-G003 is a close-by, isolated dwarf irregular galaxy. Previous observations with the ATCA indicated the presence of anomalous neutral hydrogen (HI) deviating from the kinematics of a regularly rotating disc. We conducted follow-up observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope during the 16-dish Early Science programme as well as with the MeerLICHT optical telescope. Our more sensitive radio observations confirm the presence of anomalous gas in ESO 149-G003, and further confirm the formerly tentative detection of an extraplanar HI component in the galaxy. Employing a simple tilted-ring model, in which the kinematics is determined with only four parameters but including morphological asymmetries, we reproduce the galaxy's morphology, which shows a high degree of asymmetry. By comparing our model with the observed HI, we find that in our model we cannot account for a significant (but not dominant) fraction of the gas. From the differences between our model and the observed data cube we estimate that at least 7%-8% of the HI in the galaxy exhibits anomalous kinematics, while we estimate a minimum mass fraction of less than 1% for the morphologically confirmed extraplanar component. We investigate a number of global scaling relations and find that, besides being gas-dominated with a neutral gas-to-stellar mass ratio of 1.7, the galaxy does not show any obvious global peculiarities. Given its isolation, as confirmed by optical observations, we conclude that the galaxy is likely currently acquiring neutral gas. It is either re-accreting gas expelled from the galaxy or accreting pristine intergalactic material.

We present observations and models of the kinematics and the distribution of the neutral hydrogen (HI) in the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy, Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM). We observed WLM with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and as part of the MeerKAT Early Science Programme, where 16 dishes were available. The HI disc of WLM extends out to a major axis diameter of 30 arcmin (8.5 kpc), and a minor axis diameter of 20 arcmin (5.6 kpc) as measured by the GBT. We use the MeerKAT data to model WLM using the TiRiFiC software suite, allowing us to fit different tilted-ring models and select the one that best matches the observation. Our final best-fitting model is a flat disc with a vertical thickness, a constant inclination and dispersion, and a radially-varying surface brightness with harmonic distortions. To simulate bar-like motions, we include second-order harmonic distortions in velocity in the tangential and the vertical directions. We present a model with only circular motions included and a model with non-circular motions. The latter describes the data better. Overall, the models reproduce the global distribution and the kinematics of the gas, except for some faint emission at the 2-sigma level. We model the mass distribution of WLM with a pseudo-isothermal (ISO) and a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter halo models. The NFW and the ISO models fit the derived rotation curves within the formal errors, but with the ISO model giving better reduced chi-square values. The mass distribution in WLM is dominated by dark matter at all radii.

With the advent of the Square Kilometre Array project in South Africa (SA SKA), six countries in Africa (SA SKA partner countries) have joined South Africa to contribute towards the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Networks (AVN). Each of the AVN countries will soon have a single-dish radio telescope that will be part of the AVN, the European VLBI Network, and the global VLBI network. The SKA and the AVN will enable very high sensitivity VLBI in the southern hemisphere. In the current AVN network, there is a gap in coverage in the central African region. This work analyses the scientific impact if new antennas were to be built or old telecommunication facilities were to be converted to radio telescopes in each of the six countries in central Africa i.e. Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Central African Republic. The work also discusses some economical and skills transfer impacts of having a radio interferometer in this area of Africa.

Isolating the scattering of longitudinal weak bosons at the LHC is an important tool to probe the ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking mechanism. Separating polarizations of $W$ and $Z$ bosons is complicated, because of non resonant contributions and interference effects. Additional care is necessary when considering $Z$ bosons, due to the $γ/Z$ mixing in the coupling to charged leptons.
We propose a method to define polarized signals in $Z\!Z$ and $W^+\!Z$ scattering at the LHC, which relies on the separation of weak boson polarizations at the amplitude level in Monte Carlo simulations.
After validation in the absence of lepton cuts, we investigate how polarized distributions are affected by a realistic set of kinematic cuts (and neutrino reconstruction, when needed). The total and differential polarized cross sections computed at the amplitude level are well defined, and their sum reproduces the full results, up to non negligible but computable interference effects which should be included in experimental analyses. We show that polarized cross sections computed using the reweighting method are inaccurate, particularly at large energies. We also present two procedures which address the model independent extraction of polarized components from LHC data, using Standard Model angular distribution templates.

We provide a general method to construct local infrared subtraction counterterms for unresolved radiative contributions to differential cross sections, to any order in perturbation theory. We start from the factorised structure of virtual corrections to scattering amplitudes, where soft and collinear divergences are organised in gauge-invariant matrix elements of fields and Wilson lines, and we define radiative eikonal form factors and jet functions which are fully differential in the radiation phase space, and can be shown to cancel virtual poles upon integration by using completeness relations and general theorems on the cancellation of infrared singularities. Our method reproduces known results at NLO and NNLO, and yields substantial simplifications in the organisation of the subtraction procedure, which will help in the construction of efficient subtraction algorithms at higher orders.

Our method attempts to conjugate the minimal local counterterm structure arising from a sector partition of the radiation phase space with the simplifications following from analytic integration of the counterterms. In this first implementation, the method applies to final-state massless particles. We show how our method compactly organises infrared subtraction at NLO, we deduce in detail the general structure of the subtraction terms at NNLO, and we provide a proof of principle with a complete application to a simple process at NNLO.

Vector-boson scattering processes are of great importance for the current run-II and future runs of the Large Hadron Collider. The presence of triple and quartic gauge couplings in the process gives access to the gauge sector of the Standard Model (SM) and possible new-physics contributions there. To test any new-physics hypothesis, sound knowledge of the SM contributions is necessary, with a precision which at least matches the experimental uncertainties of existing and forthcoming measurements. In this article we present a detailed study of the vector-boson scattering process with two positively-charged leptons and missing transverse momentum in the final state. In particular, we first carry out a systematic comparison of the various approximations that are usually performed for this kind of process against the complete calculation, at LO and NLO QCD accuracy. Such a study is performed both in the usual fiducial region used by experimental collaborations and in a more inclusive phase space, where the differences among the various approximations lead to more sizeable effects. Afterwards, we turn to predictions matched to parton showers, at LO and NLO: we show that on the one hand, the inclusion of NLO QCD corrections leads to more stable predictions, but on the other hand the details of the matching and of the parton-shower programs cause differences which are considerably larger than those observed at fixed order, even in the experimental fiducial region. We conclude with recommendations for experimental studies of vector-boson scattering processes.

Measuring the scattering of longitudinally-polarized vector bosons represents a fundamental test of ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking.
In addition to the challenges provided by low rates and large backgrounds, there are conceptual issues which need to be clarified for the definition of a suitable signal. Since vector bosons are unstable and can only be observed through their decay products, the polarization states interfere among themselves. Moreover, already at tree level, there are diagrams which cannot be interpreted as production times decay of EW bosons but are necessary for gauge invariance.
We discuss a possible way to define a cross section for polarized $W$'s, drop** all non resonant diagrams, and projecting on shell the resonant ones, thus, preserving gauge invariance. In most cases, the sum of polarized distributions reproduces the full results. In the absence of cuts, the ratios of the polarized cross sections to the full one agree with the results of a standard projection on Legendre polynomials. While the latter cannot be employed in a realistic environment, a comparison of the data with the shapes of the angular distributions for polarized vector bosons allows the extraction of the polarization fractions in the presence of selection cuts on the charged leptons.

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

Interference effects play an important role in Electroweak Physics. They are responsible for the restoration of unitarity al large energies. When, as is often the case, higher order corrections are only available for some particular subamplitude, interferences need to be carefully computed in order to obtain the best theoretical prediction. In the new proposal to estimate the total Higgs width from the off shell cross section, the interference between the Higgs signal and the background is essential. It has been recently pointed out in gluon fusion that whenever more than one neutral, CP even, scalars are present in the spectrum large cancellations can occur. We extend these studies to Vector Boson Scattering, examining interference effects in the Higgs sector in the Standard Model and its one Higgs Singlet extension.

Interference effects in Heavy Higgs production via gluon fusion in the Singlet Extension of the Standard Model

Abstract:
The measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson still leave room for a non minimal scalar sector. Extensions of the Standard Model typically involve multiple neutral Higgs fields which can interfere among themselves. We show that these interference effects can be substantial taking as example the one Higgs Singlet Model, the simplest renormalizable addition to the SM.

We compare the results obtained with the correlated GS09 double parton distribution function with those obtained with two instances of fully factorized single parton distribution functions: MSTW2008LO and CTEQ6LO. It appears quite feasible to measure the MPI contribution to Z+2/3/4 jets already in the first phase of the LHC with a total luminosity of one inverse femtobarn at 7 TeV. If as expected the trigger threshold for single photons is around 80 GeV, Z+2-jets production may well turn out to be more easily observable than the gamma+3-jets channel. The MPI cross section is dominated by relatively soft events with two jets balancing in transverse momentum.

The expected rate for Multiple Parton Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is large. This requires an estimate of their impact on all measurement foreseen at the LHC. Conversely it provides new means of studying MPI at the LHC. In this paper we examine the role of MPI at the LHC, with the design energy of 14 TeV, in - Z production in association with four jets, - W\pm W\pm in association with zero or two jets. -W+ W- in association with two jets. In all cases the vector bosons are assumed to decay leptonically.
The MPI contribution to Z+4j is dominated by events with two jets with balancing transverse momentum. It is possible to achieve a good signal to background ratio, close to 20%, for MPI compared to Single Interaction processes by selecting events with two jets with large separation in the transverse plane. The corresponding statistical significance for a luminosity of 1 inverse fb is about 6.9 for the mu+mu- channel alone.
The final state channel in which only two same-sign high transverse momentum charged leptons are required and additional hard jets are vetoed is dominated by MPI, with an expected yield of 2500 events with the full LHC luminosity.

The expected rate for Multiple Parton Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is large. This requires an estimate of their impact on all measurement foreseen at the LHC while opening unprecendented opportunities for a detailed study of these phenomena. In this paper we examine the MPI background to top-antitop production, in the semileptonic channel, in the early phase of data taking when the full power of $b$--tagging will not be available. The MPI background turns out to be small but non negligible, of the order of 20% of the background provided by W+4j production through a Single Parton Interaction. We then analyze the possibility of studying Multiple Parton Interactions in the W+4j channel, a far more complicated setting than the reactions examined at lower energies. The MPI contribution turns out to be dominated by final states with two energetic jets which balance in transverse momentum, and it appears possible, thanks to the good angular resolution of ATLAS and CMS, to separate the Multiple Parton Interactions contribution from Single Parton Interaction processes. The large cross section for two jet production suggests that also Triple Parton Interactions (TPI) could provide a non negligible contribution. Our preliminary analysis suggests that it might be indeed possible to investigate TPI at the LHC.

After all selection cuts about 80 and 200 events are foreseen in the two cases for a standard luminosity of 100 $fb^{-1}$ with a S/B ratio of 1/25 and 1/60 respectively. There are many possibilities for new physics beyond the Standard Model that feature non-standard Higgs sectors. These may introduce new sources of CP violation, and there may be mixing between multiple Higgs bosons or other new scalar bosons. Alternatively, the Higgs may be a composite state, or there may even be no Higgs at all. These non-standard Higgs scenarios have important implications for collider physics as well as for cosmology, and understanding their phenomenology is essential for a full comprehension of electroweak symmetry breaking. This report discusses the most relevant theories which go beyond the Standard Model and its minimal, CP-conserving supersymmetric extension: two-Higgs-doublet models and minimal supersymmetric models with CP violation, supersymmetric models with an extra singlet, models with extra gauge groups or Higgs triplets, Little Higgs models, models in extra dimensions, and models with technicolour or other new strong dynamics. For each of these scenarios, this report presents an introduction to the phenomenology, followed by contributions on more detailed theoretical aspects and studies of possible experimental signatures at the LHC and other colliders.

This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Finally, the fourth part deals with the use of Monte Carlos for simulation of LHC physics.

Abstract:
Boson boson scattering and Higgs production in boson boson fusion will be actively investigated at the LHC. We have performed a parton level study of all processes of the type $q_1 q_2 \to q_3 q_4 q_5 q_6 l^+l^-$ using for the first time a full fledged six fermion Monte Carlo event generator which employs exact matrix elements at $Ø(α_{em}^6)$. We have examined Higgs production in vector boson fusion followed by the decay chain $H\to ZZ\to l^+l^-jj$, including exactly all electroweak irreducible backgrounds. In the high mass region we have compared the case of a relatively light Higgs with the no-Higgs case. The integrated cross section for the latter case is more than twice that in the former for a minimum invariant mass of the $ZV$ pair of about 800 \GeV. We find, in a preliminary anlysis at parton level that, summing up the muon and the electron channels, about 30 events are expected in the light Higgs case for L=100 $fb^{-1}$.

Boson-boson scattering and Higgs production in boson-boson fusion hold the key to electroweak symmetry breaking. These processes include also three boson production and the purely electroweak contribution to \toptop production as well as all irreducible backgrounds. Kinematical cuts have been studied in order to enhance the VV scattering signal over background. \Phase has been compared with different Monte Carlo's showing that a complete calculation is necessary for a correct description of the process.

Abstract:
We analyse some features of WW scattering processes at LHC. The severe cancellations between fusion diagrams and the other contributions evidence the necessity of complete calculations for studying the high WW invariant mass region and disentangling the standard Higgs case from new physics.

The code is intended for analyses of vector boson scattering, Higgs search, three gauge boson production, and top physics. This first version of the program describes final states characterized by the presence of one neutrino, $pp\to 4q +lν_l$, at O($α^6$). PHASE is based on a new iterative-adaptive multichannel technique, and employs exact leading order matrix elements. The code can generate unweighted events for any subset of all available final states. The produced parton-level events carry full information on their colour and flavour structure, enabling the evolution of the partons into fully hadronised final states. An interface to hadronization packages is provided via the Les Houches Protocol.

This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop.
