Abstract:

Users select players for their lineup to maximize their FPTS within a set player salary cap. Daily fantasy sports (DFS) are weekly or daily online contests where real-game performances of individual players are converted to fantasy points (FPTS). Users select players for their lineup to maximize their FPTS within a set player salary cap. This paper focuses on (1) the development of a method to forecast NFL player performance under uncertainty and (2) determining an optimal lineup to maximize FPTS under a set salary limit. A supervised learning neural network was created and used to project FPTS based on past player performance (2018 NFL regular season for this work) prior to the upcoming week. These projected FPTS were used in a mixed integer linear program to find the optimal lineup. The performance of resultant lineups was compared to randomly-created lineups. On average, the optimal lineups outperformed the random lineups. The generated lineups were then compared to real-world lineups from users on DraftKings. The generated lineups generally fell in approximately the 31st percentile (median). The FPTS methods and predictions presented here can be further improved using this study as a baseline comparison.

Chimera states---the coexistence of synchrony and asynchrony in a nonlocally-coupled network of identical oscillators---are often used as a model framework for epileptic seizures. Here, we explore the dynamics of chimera states in a network of modified Hindmarsh-Rose neurons, configured to reflect the graph of the mesoscale mouse connectome. Our model produces superficially epileptiform activity converging on persistent chimera states in a large region of a two-parameter space governing connections (a) between subcortices within a cortex and (b) between cortices. Our findings contribute to a growing body of literature suggesting mathematical models can qualitatively reproduce epileptic seizure dynamics.

Abstract:
We apply boundary integral equations for the first time to the two-dimensional scattering of time-harmonic waves from a smooth obstacle embedded in a continuously-graded unbounded medium. In the case we solve the square of the wavenumber (refractive index) varies linearly in one coordinate, i.e. $(Δ+ E + x_2)u(x_1,x_2) = 0$ where $E$ is a constant; this models quantum particles of fixed energy in…

We apply boundary integral equations for the first time to the two-dimensional scattering of time-harmonic waves from a smooth obstacle embedded in a continuously-graded unbounded medium. In the case we solve the square of the wavenumber (refractive index) varies linearly in one coordinate, i.e. $(Δ+ E + x_2)u(x_1,x_2) = 0$ where $E$ is a constant; this models quantum particles of fixed energy in a uniform gravitational field, and has broader applications to stratified media in acoustics, optics and seismology. We evaluate the fundamental solution efficiently with exponential accuracy via numerical saddle-point integration, using the truncated trapezoid rule with typically 100 nodes, with an effort that is independent of the frequency parameter $E$. By combining with high-order Nystrom quadrature, we are able to solve the scattering from obstacles 50 wavelengths across to 11 digits of accuracy in under a minute on a desktop or laptop.

A Composition Formula for Asymptotic Morphisms
Authors:
J. Matthew Mahoney
Abstract:
For graded $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, we construct a semigroup ${\cal AP}(A,B)$ out of asymptotic pairs. This semigroup is similar to the semigroup $Ψ(A,B)$ of unbounded KK-modules defined by Baaj and Julg and there is a map $Ψ(A,B) \to {\cal AP}(A,B)$ when $B$ is stable. Furthermore, there is a natural semigroup homomorphism ${\cal AP}(A,B) \to E(A,B)$, where $E(A,B)$ is the E-theory group. We d…

We denote the image of this map $E'(A,B)$ and prove both that $E'(A,B)$ is a group and that the composition product of E-theory specializes to a composition product on these subgroups. Our main result is a formula for the composition product on $E'$ under certain operator-theoretic hypotheses about the asymptotic pairs being composed. This result is complementary to known results about the Kasparov product of unbounded KK-modules.
