The natural grand unified theories solve various problems of the supersymmetric grand unified theory and give realistic quark and lepton mass matrices under the natural assumption that all terms allowed by the symmetry are introduced with O(1) coefficients. However, because of the natural assumption, it is difficult to achieve the gauge coupling unification without tuning, while kee** neutrino masses at realistic values. In this paper, we try to avoid this tension between the neutrino masses and the gauge coupling unification, by introducing suppression factors for several terms. These suppression factors can be understood by approximate symmetries in some of the solutions. We show that one of the most important results in the natural GUT scenario, that the nucleon decay mediated by superheavy gauge fields is enhanced due to smaller unification scale while the nucleon decay mediated by superheavy colored Higgs is suppressed, can change in those models proposed in this paper.

Since it has been pointed out that physics beyond the Standard Model may be constrained by gravitational waves from cosmic strings, it has been more important to clarify in what cases cosmic strings are formed. We study the stability of the embedded string which is formed when $SU(N)\times U(1)_X$ gauge symmetries are broken to $SU(N-1)\times U(1)_Q$, and find that the stability condition can be determined by two mass ratios of the Higgs and massive gauge bosons, and does not explicitly depend on $N$. We also show that the result can be extended in supersymmetric models. In addition, we apply these results to several models and discuss the important feature of the Higgs to produce the embedded string. Although we find it difficult to be satisfied in normal realistic GUT models, it is possible if $SU(N)$ and $U(1)_X$ have different origins.

We propose a simple grand unified theory (GUT) scenario in which supersymmetry (SUSY) is spontaneously broken in visible sector. Our model is based on the GUT model that has been proposed to solve almost all problems in conventional GUT scenarios. In the previous work, the problems can be solved by a natural assumption in a supersymmetric vacuum. In this paper, we consider an extension of the model (i.e. omitting one singlet field) and break SUSY spontaneously without new sector. Our model does not have hidden sector and predicts high-scale SUSY where sfermion masses are of order 100-1000 TeV and flavor violating processes are suppressed. In this scenario, we can see an explicit signature of GUT in sfermion mass spectrum since the sfermion mass spectrum respects SU(5) matter unification. In addition, we find a superheavy long lived charged lepton as a proof of our scenario, and it may be seen in the LHC.

We discuss spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in a model with an anomalous $U(1)_A$ symmetry. In this model, the size of the each term in the superpotential is controlled by the $U(1)_A$ charge assignment and SUSY is spontaneously broken via the Fayet-Iliopoulos of $U(1)_A$ at the meta-stable vacuum. In the global SUSY analysis, the gaugino masses become much smaller than the sfermion masses, because an approximate R-symmetry appears at the SUSY breaking vacuum. In this paper, we show that gaugino masses can be as large as gravitino mass, taking the supergravity effect into consideration. This is because the R-symmetry is not imposed so that the constant term in the superpotential, which is irrelevant to the global SUSY analysis, largely contributes to the soft SUSY breaking terms in the supergravity. As the mediation mechanism, we introduce the contributions of the field not charged under $U(1)_A$ and the moduli field to cancel the anomaly of $U(1)_A$. We comment on the application of our SUSY breaking scenario to the GUT models.

We investigate the lower bounds of sfermion masses from the constraints of chromoelectric dipole moments (CEDMs) in the natural SUSY-type sfermion mass spectrum, in which stop mass $m_{\tilde t}$ is much smaller than the other sfermion masses $m_0$. The natural SUSY-type sfermion mass spectrum has been studied since the supersymmetric (SUSY) flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC) are suppressed because of large sfermion masses of the first two generations, and the weak scale is stabilized because of the light stop. However, this type of sfermion mass spectrum is severely constrained by CEDM, because the light stop contributions to the up quark CEDM are not decoupled in the limit $m_0\rightarrow\infty$, while the down quark CEDM is decoupled in the limit. It is important that the constraints are severe even if SUSY-breaking parameters (and Higgsino mass) are taken to be real because complex diagonalizing matrices of Yukawa matrices, which are from complex Yukawa couplings, generate nonvanishing CP phases in off-diagonal elements of sfermion mass matrices. We calculate the CEDM of up and down quarks numerically in the minimal SUSY standard model, and give the lower bounds for stop mass and the other sfermion masses. We show that the lower bound of stop mass becomes 7 TeV to satisfy the CEDM constraints from Hg EDM. The result is not acceptable if the weak scale stability is considered seriously. We show that if the up-type Yukawa couplings are taken to be real at the grand unification scale, the CEDM constraints are satisfied even if $m_{\tilde t}\sim 1$ TeV.

We study the thermal leptogenesis in the $E_6\times U(1)_A$ SUSY GUT model in which realistic masses and mixings of quarks and leptons can be realized. We show that the sufficient baryon number can be produced by the leptogenesis in the model, in which the mass parameter of the lightest right-handed neutrino is predicted to be smaller than $10^8$ GeV. The essential point is that the mass of the lightest right-handed neutrino can be enhanced in the model because it has a lot of mass terms whose mass parameters are predicted to be the same order of magnitude which is smaller than $10^8$ GeV. We show that O(10) enhancement for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass is sufficient for the observed baryon asymmetry. Note that such mass enhancements do not change the predictions of neutrino masses and mixings at the low energy scale in the $E_6$ model which has six right-handed neutrinos. In the calculation, we include the effects of supersymmetry and flavor in final states of the right-handed neutrino decay. We show that the effect of supersymmetry is quite important even in the strong washout regime when the effect of flavor is included. This is because the washout effects on the asymmetries both of the muon and the electron become weaker than that of the tau asymmetry.

Note that these $D$-term contributions deviate the degenerate sfermion masses among different generations in this model. This is different from the previous works which have argued the $D$-term contributions, which deviate masses only between sfermions with different quantum charges, as a signature of GUT with larger rank unification group. Such $D$-terms are strongly constrained by the FCNC processes if the SUSY breaking scale is the weak scale. However, in $E_6\times SU(2)_F\times U(1)_A$, natural SUSY type sfermion mass spectrum is obtained, and if the masses of ${\bf 10}_3$ sfermions are larger than $O(1{\rm TeV})$ to realize 126 GeV Higgs and the other sfermion masses are $O(10{\rm TeV})$, then sizable $D$-term contribution is allowed. If the deviations by these $D$-terms can be observed in future experiments like 100 TeV proton collider or muon collider, we may confirm the $E_6\times SU(2)_F\times U(1)_A$ GUT.

On the particle theory side, we know that effective action may have additional higher dimensional terms (usually called non-renormalizable terms) suppressed by the cut-off scale. Moreover, interaction between inflaton and so-called moduli field will be higher dimensional. Therefore, if such higher dimensional interaction is significant for resonant particle production, one cannot avoid the effect in preheating study. We explicitly calculated the required number of oscillation for the energy transfer. Consequently, cosmological history of an oscillating field and the moduli problem can be reconsidered.

We consider the situation in which $m_{3/2}\sim O(100{\rm TeV})$ for solving the gravitino problem and the other supersymmetry(SUSY) breaking parameters are $O(1{\rm TeV})$ for the naturalness. We point out that the anomaly mediation cancels out the renormalization group contribution to the gaugino masses and the sfermion masses other than the stop masses at a scale which is called the mirage scale. The situation is similar to the mirage mediation, in which special boundary conditions for the SUSY breaking parameters are required, though for the stop masses and the up-type Higgs mass, such cancellation at the mirage scale does not happen. Despite no cancellation for the up-type Higgs mass, we show that the little hierarchy problem becomes less severe in this situation. One advantage of this situation over the mirage mediation is that the stop mixing parameter $A_t$ can be larger and therefore, smaller stop mass is sufficient for 125 GeV Higgs. When the mirage scale is around TeV scale, the SUSY breaking parameters induced by the gravity mediation at the grand unification scale can be observed directly by the TeV scale experiments.

When $R_1 > 0.4$ the grand unification group is not $SU(5)$, while when $R_1 > 1$ the grand unification group is $E_6$. Moreover, when $R_2 > 0.3$, $E_6$ is implied. Main ambiguities come from the diagonalizing matrices for quark and lepton mass matrices in this calculation once we fix the vacuum expectation values of GUT Higgs bosons. In this paper, we calculate $R_1$ and $R_2$ in $E_6\times SU(2)_F$ SUSY GUT with anomalous $U(1)_A$ gauge symmetry, in which realistic quark and lepton masses and mixings can be obtained though the flavor symmetry $SU(2)_F$ constrains Yukawa couplings at the GUT scale. The ambiguities of Yukawa couplings are expected to be reduced. We show that the predicted region for $R_1$ and $R_2$ is more restricted than in the $E_6$ model without $SU(2)_F$ as expected. Moreover, we re-examine the previous claim for the identification of grand unification group with $100$ times more model points ($10^6$ model points), including $E_6 \times SU(2)_F$ model.

We study quantum effects on moduli dynamics arising from particle production near the enhanced symmetry point (ESP). We focus on non-renormalizable couplings between the moduli field and the field that becomes light at the ESP. Considering higher dimensional interaction, we find that particle production is significant in a large area, which is even larger than the area that is expected from a renormalizable interaction. It is possible to find this possibility from a trivial adiabatic condition; however the quantitative estimation of particle production and trap** of the field in motion are far from trivial. In this paper we study particle production and trap** in detail, using both the analytical and numerical calculations, to find a clear and intuitive result that supports trap** in a vast variety of theories. Our study shows that trap** driven by a non-renormalizable interaction is possible. This possibility has not been considered in previous works. Some phenomenological models of particle physics will be mentioned to complement discussion.

Since the predicted lifetime $τ(p\rightarrow π^0+e^c)$ becomes around the experimental lower bound though it is strongly dependent on the explicit models, the discovery of the nucleon decay in near future can be expected. We explain why the two ratios $R_1\equiv\frac{Γ_{n \rightarrow π^0 + ν^c}}{Γ_{p \rightarrow π^0 + e^c}}$ and $R_2\equiv\frac{Γ_{p \rightarrow K^0 + μ^c}}{Γ_{p \rightarrow π^0 + e^c}}$ are important in identifying grand unification group and we show that three anomalous $U(1)_A$ SUSY GUT models with $SU(5)$, $SO(10)$ and $E_6$ grand unification group can be identified by measuring the two ratios. If $R_1$ is larger than $0.4$, the grand unification group is not $SU(5)$, and moreover if $R_2$ is larger than $0.3$, the grand unification group is implied to be $E_6$.

If the primary decayed particles have color charges and the virtuality is around 10^13-10^14 GeV, the averaged number of the LSPs can become O(100). As the result, the upper limit of the mass of the superheavy particle, whose decay can produce the observed abundance of the dark matter, can increase from 10^12 GeV to 10^14 GeV. Since the typical scale of the inflaton mass of the chaotic inflation is around 10^13 GeV, the decay of the inflaton can produce the observed dark matter abundance if the reheating temperature is of order 1 GeV. Even for the standard model particles with virtuality Q\sim 10-100 TeV, the averaged number of the LSPs becomes O(0.1) for gluon, and O(0.01) for Higgs, which strongly constrains the scenario of non-thermal LSP production from the decay of moduli with 10-100 TeV mass.

Recently, in arXiv:1012.1690, we have constructed two new such E6 grand unified models in heterotic asymmetric orbifolds. Although our new models themselves cannot resolve the unsatisfactory point in the previous model, our discovery raises hopes that one can construct many other such models in this framework and find better models. Here, by giving partition functions explicitly, we explain the details of our construction. Utilizing the lattice engineering technique and the diagonal embedding method, we can construct models systematically. We hope that these techniques and the details of our construction will lead to more phenomenologically desirable models.

Such an asymmetric orbifold is missing in the classification in the literature, which concludes that only one E6 model is possible. In both of the new models, an adjoint Higgs field is obtained in virtue of the diagonal embedding method. This method mods out the three E6 factors of an even self-dual momentum-lattice by a permutation symmetry. In order to realize the E6^3 even self-dual lattice, we utilize the lattice engineering technique. Among the eight possible orbifold actions in our setup, two lead to new E6 models. Though these models still share the unsatisfactory issues with the known one, our discovery raises hopes that excellent models that solve all the problems in the supersymmetric grand unified models will be found in this framework.

It has been pointed out that in E6 grand unified theory with SU(2) family symmetry, the spontaneous CP violation can solve the supersymmetric CP problem. The scenario predicts V_{ub} \sim O(λ^4) rather than O(λ^3) which is naively expected value, because of a cancellation at the leading order. Since the experimental value of V_{ub} is O(λ^4), it must be important to consider the reason and the conditions for the cancellation. In this paper, we give a simple reason for the cancellation and show that in some E6 models such a cancellation requires that the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the adjoint Higgs does not break U(1)_{B-L}. Note that this direction of the VEV plays an important role in solving the doublet-triplet splitting problem by Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism. In this E6 models, the experiments may measure the direction of the adjoint Higgs VEV by measuring the size of V_{ub} \sim O(λ^4).

We consider the generalized gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) models with the messenger fields which do not form the complete multiplets of SU(5) GUT symmetry. Such a situation may happen in the anomalous U(1) GUT scenario because the mass spectrum of the superheavy particle does not respect SU(5) GUT symmetry, although the success of the gauge coupling unification can be explained. In this paper, we assume that one pair of the messenger fields gives the dominant contribution, and the LHC signature for the two possible messengers, X + \bar{X} and Q + \bar{Q}, are examined. We investigate the possibility to measure the deviation from the usual GUT relation of the gaugino masses which is one of the most important features of these scenarios.

We construct a model of spontaneous CP violation in E6 supersymmetric grand unified theory. In the model, we employ an SU(2)F flavor symmetry and an anomalous U(1)A symmetry. The SU(2)F flavor symmetry is introduced to provide the origin of hierarchical structures of Yukawa coupling and to ensure the universality of sfermion soft masses. The anomalous U(1)A symmetry is introduced to realize the doublet-triplet mass splitting, to provide the origin of hierarchical structures of Yukawa couplings, and to solve the mu problem. In the model, CP is spontaneously broken by the SU(2)F breaking in order to provide a Kobayashi-Maskawa phase and to evade the supersymmetric CP problem. However, a naive construction of the model generally leads to unwanted outcome, Arg[mu b*]=O(1), when CP violating effects in the flavor sector are taken into account. We cure this difficulty by imposing a discrete symmetry and find that this prescription can play additional roles. It ensures that realistic up-quark mass and Cabibbo angle are simultaneously realized without cancellation between O(1) coefficients. Also, severe constraints from the chromo-electric dipole moment of the quark can be satisfied without destabilizing the weak scale. The discrete symmetry reduces the number of free parameters, but the model is capable of reproducing quark and lepton mass spectra, mixing angles, and a Jarlskog invariant. We obtain characteristic predictions Vub sim O(lambda^4) (lambda=0.22) and |Vcb Yb| = |Yc| at the grand unified theory scale.

In the model, soft masses of gauginos and the 3rd generation of 10 of SU(5) are around the weak scale, while other sfermion soft mass is universal and around a few TeV. Such sfermion mass spectrum is motivated not only from flavor, CP and naturalness constraints but also from E_6 grand unified model with non-Abelian horizontal (flavor) symmetry. The characteristic signature of the model at the LHC is the dominance of the events with 4 b partons in the final state together with high rate of mildly boosted top quark arising from gluino decay. The prominent high p_T jet also arises from squark decay. We show it is possible to find the characteristic signature in the early stage of the LHC. The discrimination of our scenario from some CMSSM model points with similar signature may be possible with large integrated luminosity. The result of sparticle mass measurement using exclusive channel with the help of hemisphere analysis, and inclusive measurement of gluino and squark masses using M_{T2} and M_{T2}^{min} in some representative model points are presented.

We discuss the supersymmetric CP problem that arises when the sfermion soft mass universality is modified. We place the 3rd generation SU(5) ten-plet sfermion masses in the weak scale in view of the naturalness. The other sfermion masses are assumed to be universal and a TeV scale in order to weaken the flavor changing neutral current processes and electric dipole moment (EDM) constraints. However this modification generically induces too large up quark chromo-EDM (CEDM) via the weak scale stop loop. In order to suppress this CEDM, we propose certain type of flavor structure where the parameters of the up-(s)quark sector are real whereas those of the down-(s)quark and the charged (s)lepton sectors are complex at the GUT scale. It is shown that, in this set up, up quark CEDM can be suppressed within the range where the current and future experiments have their sensitivity. We briefly illustrate the simple realization of these particular forms of the modified sfermion universality with real up-(s)quark sector by spontaneous CP violation in E$_6$ SUSY GUT with SU(2) flavor symmetry.

When we introduce generic interactions, i.e., all interactions including higher dimensional interactions which are allowed by the symmetry of the theory with O(1) coefficients, various scales can be determined by the symmetry (U(1) charges of the introduced fields). We examine how to determine the various scales, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs), and the scales of F-term and of D-term. Moreover, we propose a new scenario for the stabilization of the moduli in the SUSY breaking models.

We study the neutralino relic density in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with natural light Higgs sector in which all Higgs masses, the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking parameters, and the higgsino mass parameter mu are of order the weak scale. To realize this situation we adopt nonuniversal Higgs masses at the grand unified scale. We show that in some parameter space in which the SUSY breaking parameters are comparatively small, not only the constraint from the observed relic density of dark matter but also the LEP Higgs bound and the constraint from the b ->s gamma process are satisfied. In most of the parameter space, the neutralino relic density becomes smaller than the observed relic density in contrast with the results in the constrained minimal SUSY standard model (CMSSM). The reason is that the neutralino coannihilation processes to Higgs bosons open even if the gaugino mass is small and the cross sections become large due to the small dimensionful parameters. Especially small mu parameter and the light CP-odd Higgs, which are difficult to be realized in the CMSSM, are essential for the result.

One of the advantages of this nonuniversal mass model is that the first two generation sfermion masses can be large whereas both (left and right handed) stops are light so as to stabilize the weak scale. Therefore, we studied a minimal supersymmetric standard model parameter region in which a fine tuning in Higgs sector is relaxed owing to light masses of stops, gluino and higgsinos. In such a parameter region, the chargino contribution is as important as the gluino one. We show that the CP asymmetries of B \to φK_S and B \to η' K_S can deviate from their standard model predicted values by O(0.1) because of constructive interference between gluino and chargino contributions.

It is assumed that only third generation sfermions which are contained in ${\bf 10}(Q, U^c, E^c)$ of SU(5) can have a different mass from the others. This mass spectrum is led from $E_6$ GUT model with horizontal symmetries. It is shown that branching ratios of $τ\to μγ$ and $μ\to e γ$ depend strongly on a right-handed stau mass. The weak scale stability requires the light stau, so large decay rates can be expected in this scenario. When stau is around 150 GeV and $\tan β\sim 10$, the branching ratios can be larger than $Br(τ\to μγ) \simeq 10^{-8}$ and $Br(μ\to e γ) \simeq 5\times 10^{-12}$, which are within reach of future experiments. In addition, this model has an interesting feature that the final state charged lepton tends to have the right-handed chirality.

We show that all the parameters which destabilize the weak scale can be taken around the weak scale in the MSSM without conflicting with the SM Higgs mass bound set by LEP experiment. The essential point is that if the lightest CP-even Higgs h in the MSSM has only a small coupling to Z boson, g_{ZZh}, LEP cannot generate the Higgs sufficiently. In the scenario, the SM Higgs mass bound constrains the mass of the heaviest CP-even Higgs H which has the SM like g_{ZZH} coupling. However, it is easier to make the heaviest Higgs heavy by the effect of off-diagonal elements of the mass matrix of the CP-even Higgs because the larger eigenvalue of 2 times 2 matrix becomes larger by introducing off-diagonal elements. Thus, the smaller stop masses can be consistent with the LEP constraints. Moreover, the two excesses observed at LEP Higgs search can naturally be explained as the signals of the MSSM Higgs h and H in this scenario. One of the most interesting results in the scenario is that all the Higgs in the MSSM have the weak scale masses. For example, the charged Higgs mass should be around 130 GeV. This looks inconsistent with the lower bound obtained by the b --> s gamma process as m_{H^\pm}>350GeV. However, we show that the amplitude induced by the charged Higgs can naturally be compensated by that of the chargino if we take the mass parameters by which the little hierarchy problem can be solved. The point is that the both amplitudes have the same order of magnitudes when all the fields in the both loops have the same order of masses.

In this paper, we examine the possibility that the Higgs sectors of the GUT symmetry and of the horizontal symmetry are unified, that is, there are some Higgs fields whose vacuum expectation values (VEVs) break both the GUT gauge symmetry and the horizontal symmetry at the same time. Although the scale of the VEVs become too large to suppress the flavor changing neutral current processes sufficiently, the unification is possible. In addition, for the $SU(3)_H$ models, the $SU(3)_H$ gauge anomaly is cancelled in the unified models without introducing additional fields in contrast with the previous models in which the Higgs sectors are not unified.

Recently, a new mechanism, which explains why the three gauge coupling constants meet at a certain scale in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, has been proposed in a scenario of grand unified theories with anomalous $U(1)_A$ gauge symmetry. It is a non-trivial result that although there are many superheavy fields whose mass scales are below the unification scale, this mechanism explains this fact by means of one-loop renormalization group equations. Since the unification scale generically becomes below the usual GUT scale, $2\times 10^{16}$ GeV, and proton decay via dimension 5 operators is suppressed, the scenario predicts that proton decay via dimension 6 operators, $p\to e π^0$, will be observed in the near future. In this paper, we attempt to estimate a reasonable range of values of the lifetime of the proton predicted within this scenario by using a two-loop renormalization group calculation and the ambiguities of \order1 coefficients.

In the scenario, the doublet-triplet splitting can be realized while the proton decay via dimension 5 operator is suppressed. The gauge coupling unification is also realized without finetuning. The GUT scale is generally lower than the usual GUT scale 2\times 10^{16} GeV, the proton decay via dimension 6 operator can be seen in near future experiment. The lifetime of nucleon in the model is roughly estimated as τ_p(p\to e^+π^0)\sim 3\times 10^{33} years. It is shown that the Higgs sector is compatible with the matter sector proposed by one of the authors, which reproduces the realistic quark and lepton mass matrices including bi-large neutrino mixing angle. Combining the Higgs sector and the matter sector, we can obtain the totally consistent E_6 GUT. The input parameters are only 8 integer anomalous U(1)_A charges (+3 for singlet Higgs) for the Higgs sector and 3 (half) integer charges for the matter sector.

Recently we proposed a natural scenario of grand unified theories with anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry, in which doublet-triplet splitting is realized in SO(10) unification using Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism and realistic quark and lepton mass matrices can be obtained in a simple way. The scenario has an additional remarkable feature that the symmetry breaking scale and the mass spectrum of super heavy particles are determined essentially by anomalous U(1)_A charges. Therefore once all the anomalous U(1)_A charges are fixed, the gauge coupling flows can be calculated. We examine several models in which the gauge coupling unification is realized. Examining the conditions for the coupling unification, we show that when all the fields except those of the minimal SUSY standard model become super-heavy, the unification scale generically becomes just below the usual GUT scale Λ_G\sim 2\times 10^{16} GeV and the cutoff scale becomes around Λ_G. Since the lower GUT scale leads to shorter life time of nucleon, the proton decay via dimension six operator p\to e^+π^0 can be seen in future experiment. On the other hand, the lower cutoff scale than the Planck scale may imply the existence of extra dimension in which only gravity modes can propagate.

For the neutrino sector, bi-maximal neutrino mixing angles are realized. Moreover, the generic interaction is allowed, namely, all the terms which are allowed by the symmetry are included in the scenario. Therefore, once we fix the integer number charges of the anomalous U(1)_A symmetry, which plays an essential role in the scenario, all the scales, GUT breaking scale, mass scales of superheavy particles, are determined. The scenario can be extended into E_6 unification, in which a condition for suppression of flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) is automatically satisfied.

In this paper we show that there is a mechanism in which the doublet Higgs obtains the supersymmetric mass which is proportional to the SUSY breaking parameters. This mechanism can be applied easily in the above scenario. The point is that the mass term, which is forbidden by SUSY zero mechanism, can be induced by SUSY breaking. The proportional coefficient is controlled by the anomalous U(1)_A charges.

We propose an attractive scenario of grand unified theories in which doublet-triplet splitting is beautifully realized in SO(10) unification using Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism. The anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry plays essential roles in the doublet-triplet splitting mechanism. It is interesting that the anomalous U(1)_A charges determine the unification scale and mass spectrum of additional particles as well as the order of Yukawa couplings of quarks and leptons. For the neutrino sector, bi-maximal mixing angles are naturally obtained and proton decay via dimension 5 operators is suppressed. It is suggestive that the anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry motivated by superstring theory excellently solves the two biggest problems in grand unified theories, fermion mass hierarchy problem and doublet-triplet splitting problem.
