We compare the performances of single-period and dual-period rectangular gratings using Finite Element Method-based optimization and predict one to two orders of magnitude improvement in their transmission loss-linewidth product, which is the relevant figure of merit for e.g. resonant mirror-based microcavity applications.

We report on the theoretical and experimental investigations of optical microcavities consisting in the plane-plane arrangement of a broadband high-reflectivity mirror and a suspended one-dimensional grating mirror possessing a high-quality factor Fano resonance. By varying the length of these cavities from the millimeter to the few-micron range, we observe at short lengths the reduction of the spectral linewidth predicted to occur for such a Fano cavity as compared to a conventional broadband mirror cavity with the same length and internal losses. Such narrow linewidth and small modevolume microcavities with high-mechanical quality ultrathin mirrors will be attractive for a wide range of applications within optomechanics and sensing.

How can an entire CS faculty, who together have been teaching the ACM standard CS curricula, shift to teaching elements of inclusive design across a 4-year undergraduate CS program? And will they even want to try? To investigate these questions, we developed an educate-the-educators curriculum to support this shift. The overall goal of the educate-the-educators curriculum was to enable CS faculty to creatively engage with embedding inclusive design into their courses in "minimally invasive" ways. GenderMag, an inclusive design evaluation method, was selected for use. The curriculum targeted the following learning outcomes: to enable CS faculty: (1) to analyze the costs and benefits of integrating inclusive design into their own course(s); (2) to evaluate software using the GenderMag method, and recognize its use to identify meaningful issues in software; (3) to integrate inclusive design into existing course materials with provided resources and collaboration; and (4) to prepare to engage and guide students on learning GenderMag concepts. We conducted a field study over a spring/summer followed by end-of-fall interviews, during which we worked with 18 faculty members to integrate inclusive design into 13 courses. Ten of these faculty then taught 7 of these courses that were on the Fall 2021 schedule, across 16 sections. We present the new educate-the-educators curriculum and report on the faculty's experiences acting upon it over the three-month field study and subsequent interviews. Our results showed that, of the 18 faculty we worked with, 83% chose to modify their courses; by Fall 2021, faculty across all four years of a CS degree program had begun teaching inclusive design concepts. When we followed up with the 10 Fall 2021 faculty, 91% of their reported outcomes indicated that the incorporations of inclusive design concepts in their courses went as well as or better than expected.

We report on the design and experimental characterization of a suspended silicon nitride subwavelength grating possessing a polarization-independent guided-mode resonance at oblique incidence. At this resonant wavelength we observe that the transverse intensity profile of the transmitted beam is consistent with a first-order spatial differentiation of the incident beam profile in the direction of the grating periodicity, regardless of the incident light polarization. These observations are corroborated by full numerical simulations. The simple one-dimensional and symmetric design, combined with the thinness and excellent mechanical properties of these essentially loss-free dieletric films, is attractive for applications in optical processing, sensing and optomechanics.

Upconversion of sub-band-gap photons constitutes a promising way for improving the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit. 1500 to 980 nm upconversion by trivalent erbium ions is well-suited for this purpose, but the small absorption cross section hinders real-world applications. We employ tailored gold nanostructures to vastly improve the upconversion efficiency in erbium-doped TiO$_2$ thin films. The nanostructures are found using topology optimization and parameter optimization and fabricated by electron beam lithography. In qualitative agreement with a theoretical model, the samples show substantial electric-field enhancements inside the upconverting films for excitation at 1500 nm for both s- and p-polarization under a wide range of incidence angles and excitation intensities. An unprecedented upconversion enhancement of 913(51) is observed at an excitation intensity of 1.7 Wcm$^{-2}$. We derive a semi-empirical expression for the photonically enhanced upconversion efficiency, valid for all excitation intensities. This allows us to determine the upconversion properties needed to achieve significant improvements in real-world solar-cell devices through photonic-enhanced upconversion.

We propose a simplified rate-equation model for the 1500 nm to 980 nm upconversion in Er$^{3+}$. The simplifications, based on typical experimental conditions as well as on conclusions based on previously published more advanced models, enable an analytical solution of the rate equations, which reproduces known properties of upconversion. We have compared the model predictions with intensity-dependent measurements on four samples with different optical properties, such as upconversion-luminescence yield and the characteristic lifetime of the $^4I_{13/2}$ state. The saturation of the upconversion is in all cases well-described by the model over several orders of magnitude in excitation intensities. Finally, the model provides a new measure for the quality of upconverter systems based on Er$^{3+}$ -- the saturation intensity. This parameter provides valuable information on upconversion parameters such as the rates of energy-transfer upconversion and cross-relaxation. In the present investigation, we used the saturation intensity to conclude that the differences in upconversion performance of the investigated samples are mainly due to differences in the non-radiative relaxation rates.
