Production of Slow Protonium in Vacuum
Abstract: We describe how protonium, the quasi-stable antiproton-proton bound system, has been synthesized following the interaction of antiprotons with the molecular ion H$_2^+$ in a nested Penning trap environment. From a careful analysis of the spatial distributions of antiproton annihilation events in the ATHENA experiment, evidence is presented for protonium production with sub-eV kinetic energies in… ▽ More

A shadowing lemma for abelian Higgs vortices
Abstract: We use a shadowing-type lemma in order to analyze the singular, semilinear elliptic equation describing static self-dual abelian Higgs vortices. Such an approach allows us to construct new solutions having an \textit{infinite} number of arbitrarily prescribed vortex points. Furthermore, we obtain the precise asymptotic profile of the solutions in the form of an approximate superposition rule, up… ▽ More

Positron plasma diagnostics and temperature control for antihydrogen production
Abstract: Production of antihydrogen atoms by mixing antiprotons with a cold, confined, positron plasma depends critically on parameters such as the plasma density and temperature. We discuss non-destructive measurements, based on a novel, real-time analysis of excited, low-order plasma modes, that provide comprehensive characterization of the positron plasma in the ATHENA antihydrogen apparatus. The plas… ▽ More
