Abstract:
We obtain new bounds on effective ALP-neutrino interactions from their loop-level impact on the ALP couplings to electroweak gauge bosons $γZ$, $ZZ$ and $W^+W^-$. Both types of interactions are connected via the chiral anomaly, which allows to overcome the fermion mass suppression of tree-level analyses. ALP couplings to charged leptons are considered simultaneously with ALP-neutrino ones, as required by gauge invariance. Complete one-loop computations are presented together with relevant kinematic limits. We leverage data obtained from rare meson decay measurements alongside observations from collider experiments, among others. The novel constraints are particularly competitive for ALP masses $\gtrsim 100$ MeV, evidencing the powerful potential of future ALP searches at colliders which target its couplings to electroweak gauge bosons.

We compute the renormalization group equations (RGEs) of the Standard Model effective field theory (EFT) extended with a real scalar singlet, up to dimension-five and one-loop accuracy. We compare our renormalization results with those found in the shift-symmetry preserving limit, which characterizes axion-like particles (ALPs). The matching and running equations below the electroweak scale are also obtained, including the mixing effects in the scalar sector. Such mixing leads to interesting phenomenological consequences that are absent in the EFT at the renormalizable level, namely new correlations among the triplet and quartic Higgs couplings are predicted. All RGEs obtained in this work are implemented in a new Mathematica package - ALPRunner, together with functions to solve the running numerically for an arbitrary set of UV parameters. As an application, we obtain the improved electric dipole moment constraints on particular regions of the singlet parameter space, and quantify the level of shift-breaking in these regions.

Abstract:
We propose a new search for Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), targeting Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) processes at the LHC. We consider nonresonant ALP-mediated VBS, where the ALP participates as an off-shell mediator. We propose a new search for Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), targeting Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) processes at the LHC. We consider nonresonant ALP-mediated VBS, where the ALP participates as an off-shell mediator. This process occurs whenever the ALP is too light to be produced resonantly, and it takes advantage of the derivative nature of ALP interactions with the electroweak Standard Model bosons. We study the production of $ZZ$, $Zγ$, $W^\pm γ$, $W^\pm Z$ and $W^\pm W^\pm$ pairs with large diboson invariant masses in association with two jets. Working in a gauge-invariant framework, upper limits on ALP couplings to electroweak bosons are obtained from a reinterpretation of Run 2 public CMS VBS analyses. The constraints inferred on ALP couplings to $ZZ$, $Zγ$ and $W^\pm W^\pm$ pairs are very competitive for ALP masses up to 100 GeV. They have the advantage of being independent of the ALP coupling to gluons and of the ALP decay width. Simple projections for LHC Run 3 and HL-LHC are also calculated, demonstrating the power of future dedicated analyses at ATLAS and CMS.
