The discovery of new exoplanets makes us wonder where each new exoplanet stands along its way to develop life as we know it on Earth. Our Evo-SETI Theory is a mathematical way to face this problem. We describe cladistics and evolution by virtue of a few statistical equations based on lognormal probability density functions (pdf) in the time. We call b-lognormal a lognormal pdf starting at instant b (birth). Then, the lifetime of any living being becomes a suitable b-lognormal in the time. Next, our "Peak-Locus Theorem" translates cladistics: each species created by evolution is a b-lognormal whose peak lies on the exponentially growing number of living species. This exponential is the mean value of a stochastic process called "Geometric Brownian Motion" (GBM). Past mass extinctions were all-lows of this GBM. In addition, the Shannon Entropy (with a reversed sign) of each b-lognormal is the measure of how evolved that species is, and we call it EvoEntropy. The "molecular clock" is re-interpreted as the EvoEntropy straight line in the time whenever the mean value is exactly the GBM exponential. We were also able to extend the Peak-Locus Theorem to any mean value other than the exponential. For example, we derive in this paper for the first time the EvoEntropy corresponding to the Markov-Korotayev (2007) "cubic" evolution: a curve of logarithmic increase.

In this paper we propose a new mathematical model capable of merging Darwinian Evolution, Human History and SETI into a single mathematical scheme: 1) Darwinian Evolution over the last 3.5 billion years is defined as one particular realization of a certain stochastic process called Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM). This GBM yields the fluctuations in time of the number of species living on Earth. Its mean value curve is an increasing exponential curve, i.e. the exponential growth of Evolution. 2) In 2008 this author provided the statistical generalization of the Drake equation yielding the number N of communicating ET civilizations in the Galaxy. N was shown to follow the lognormal probability distribution. 3) We call "b-lognormals" those lognormals starting at any positive time b ("birth") larger than zero. Then the exponential growth curve becomes the geometric locus of the peaks of a one-parameter family of b-lognormals: this is our way to re-define Cladistics. 4) b-lognormals may be also be interpreted as the lifespan of any living being (a cell, or an animal, a plant, a human, or even the historic lifetime of any civilization). Applying this new mathematical apparatus to Human History, leads to the discovery of the exponential progress between Ancient Greece and the current USA as the envelope of all b-lognormals of Western Civilizations over a period of 2500 years. 5) We then invoke Shannon's Information Theory. The b-lognormals' entropy turns out to be the index of "development level" reached by each historic civilization. We thus get a numerical estimate of the entropy difference between any two civilizations, like the Aztec-Spaniard difference in 1519. 6) In conclusion, we have derived a mathematical scheme capable of estimating how much more advanced than Humans an Alien Civilization will be when the SETI scientists will detect the first hints about ETs.

The Solar Gravitational Lens (SGL) is a gift of nature that Humanity is now ready to exploit. SGL physics started with Einstein's 1936 paper on the gravitational lensing; it was not until 1979 that the idea of a space mission reaching the Sun's nearest focal sphere at 550 Astronomical Units (AU) was put forward by Von Eshleman. By the year 2000, the senior author of this paper (CM) had submitted a relevant formal proposal to ESA about the relevant space mission to 550 AU. He presented his ideas at NASA-JPL for the first time on August 18. In 2020 NASA awarded a $2million grant to JPL to prepare for the first FOCAL space mission. But radio bridges between the Sun and any nearby star may also be conceived. The idea is that, if Humanity will be able to send unmanned space probes to the nearest stars in the future, each of these probes could be placed behind the star of arrival and along the star-Sun line, thus allowing for TWO gravitational lenses to work together. That will result in a permanent communication system with much REDUCED POWERS to keep the radio link between the two stellar systems: a veritable Galactic Internet. In this paper, we study for the first time the 50 radio bridges between the Sun and each of the nearest 100 stars in the Galaxy. Of course, this work is for the centuries to come. But knowing which natural radio bridge between the Sun and each of the nearest 50 stars is MORE CONVENIENT, will open the ROAD MAP for the HUMAN EXPANSION into the Galaxy.

We develop the mathematical theory for an automatic, space-based system to deflect NEOs by virtue of missiles shot from the Earth-Moon L1 and L3 Lagrangian Points. A patent application has been filed for the relevant code dubbed AsterOFF (=Asteroids OFF !). This code was already implemented, and a copyright for it was registered. In a paper published in Acta Astronautica, this author proved mathematically the following theorem: "Within the sphere of influence of the Earth, any NEO could be hit by a missile at just an angle of 90 degrees, was the missile shot from the Lagrangian Points L1 or L3 of the Earth-Moon system, rather than from the surface of the Earth". As a consequence, the hitting missile would have to move along a "confocal ellipse" (centered at the Earth) uniquely determined by the NEO's incoming hyperbola. The author further shows in this paper that: 1) The proposed defense system would be ideal to deflect NEOs that are small, i.e. less than one kilometer in diameter. 2) The traditional theory of Keplerian orbits can successfully be applied to get an excellent first-order approximation of the mathematical formulae of the energy-momentum requested to achieve the NEO deflection. Many engineering details about the missiles shot from L1 and L3, however, still have to be implemented into our simulations. 3) Was one missile not enough to deflect the NEO completely, it is a great advantage of the "confocal conics" used here that the new, slightly deflected NEO's hyperbola would certainly be hit at nearly 90 degrees by another and slightly more eccentric elliptical missile trajectory. A sufficient number of missiles could thus be launched in a sequence from the Earth-Moon Lagrangian points L1 and L3 with the result that the SUM of all these small and repeated deflections will finally throw the NEO off its collision hyperbola with the Earth.

In a series of recent papers and in a book, this author put forward a mathematical model capable of embracing the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence (SETI), Darwinian Evolution and Human History into a single, unified statistical picture, concisely called Evo-SETI. The relevant mathematical tools are: (1) Geometric Brownian motion (GBM), the stochastic process representing evolution as the stochastic increase of the number of species living on Earth over the last 3.5 billion years. This GBM is well known in the mathematics of finances (Black-Sholes models). (2) The probability distributions known as b-lognormals, i.e. lognormals starting at a certain positive instant b>0 rather than at the origin. In the framework of Darwinian Evolution, the resulting mathematical construction was shown to be what evolutionary biologists call Cladistics. (3) The (Shannon) entropy of such b-lognormals is then seen to represent the 'degree of progress' reached by each living organism or by each big set of living organisms, like historic human civilizations. (4) All these results also match with SETI in that the statistical Drake equation (generalization of the ordinary Drake equation to encompass statistics) leads just to the lognormal distribution as the probability distribution for the number of extra-terrestrial civilizations existing in the Galaxy. (5) The well-known 'Molecular Clock of Evolution', namely the 'constant rate of Evolution at the molecular level' as shown by Kimura's Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution, identifies with growth rate of the entropy of our Evo-SETI model. (6) Furthermore, we apply our Evo-SETI model to lognormal stochastic processes other than GBMs. For instance, we provide two models for the mass extinctions that occurred in the past. (7) Finally, we show that the Markov & Korotayev model for Darwinian Evolution identifies with an Evo-SETI model.

Galactic Internet may already exist, if all stars are exploited as gravitational lenses. In fact, the gravitational lens of the Sun is a well-known astrophysical phenomenon predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity. It implies that, if we can send a probe along any radial direction away from the Sun up to the minimal distance of 550 AU and beyond, the Sun's mass will act as a huge magnifying lens, letting us "see" detailed radio maps of whatever may lie on the other side of the Sun even at very large distances. The 2009 book by this author, ref. [1], studies such future FOCAL space missions to 550 AU and beyond. In this paper, however, we want to study another possibility yet: how to create the future interstellar radio links between the solar system and any future interstellar probe by utilizing the gravitational lens of the Sun as a huge antenna. In particular, we study the Bit Error Rate (BER) across interstellar distances with and without using the gravitational lens effect of the Sun (ref. [2]). The conclusion is that only when we will exploit the Sun as a gravitational lens we will be able to communicate with our own probes (or with nearby Aliens) across the distances of even the nearest stars to us in the Galaxy, and that at a reasonable Bit Error Rate. We also study the radio bridge between the Sun and any other Star that is made up by the two gravitational lenses of both the Sun and that Star. The alignment for this radio bridge to work is very strict, but the power-saving is enormous, due to the huge contributions of the two stars' lenses to the overall antenna gain of the system. We study a few cases in detail. Finally, we find the information channel capacity for each of those radio bridges, putting thus a physical constraint to the amount of information transfer that will be possible even by exploiting the stars as gravitational lenses

In the past ten years this author published some 15 highly mathematical papers about his new Evo-SETI (Evolution and SETI) Theory. He proved that key features of Evo-SETI are: 1) The Statistical Drake Equation is the extension of the classical Drake equation into Statistics. Probability distributions of the number of ET civilizations in the Galaxy are given, and so is the probable distribution of the distance of ETs from us. 2) Darwinian Evolution is re-defined as a Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM) in the number of living species on Earth over the last 3.5 billion years. Its mean value grows exponentially in time and Mass Extinctions of the past are accounted for as unpredictable low GBM values. 3) The exponential growth of the number of species during Evolution is the geometric locus of the peaks of a one-parameter family of lognormal distributions constrained between the time axis and the exponential mean value. This accounts for cladistics. 4) The lifespan of a living being, let it be a cell, an animal, a human, a historic human society, or even an ET society, is mathematically described as a finite b-lognormal. This author then described mathematically the historical development of eight human historic civilizations, from Ancient Greece to the USA, by virtue of b-lognormals. 5) The b-lognormal's entropy is the measure of a civilization's advancement level. By measuring the entropy difference between Aztecs and Spaniards in 1519, this author was able to account mathematically for the 20-million-Aztecs defeat by a few thousand Spaniards, due to the latter's technological superiority. Now: whenever a new exoplanet is discovered, where does that exoplanet stand in its evolution towards life as we have it on Earth nowadays, or beyond? In this paper we provide mathematical criteria to answer this question within the framework of the Evo-SETI Theory, thus creating the EVO-SETI SCALE.

In this work, we propose a new method of computing the Karhunen-Loève Transform (KLT) applied to complex voltage data for the detection and noise level reduction in astronomical signals. We compared this method with the standard KLT techniques based on the Toeplitz correlation matrix and we conducted a performance analysis for the detection and extraction of astrophysical and artificial signals via Monte Carlo simulations. We applied our novel method to a real data study-case: the Voyager 1 telemetry signal. We evaluated the KLT performance in an astrophysical context: our technique provides a remarkable improvement in computation time and Monte-Carlo simulations show significant reconstruction results for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) down to -10 dB and comparable results with standard signal detection techniques. The application to artificial signals, such as the Voyager 1 data, shows a notable gain in SNR after the KLT.

Spacecraft kinematics, peak perihelion temperature and space environment effects during solar-radiation-pressure acceleration for a beryllium hollow-body interstellar solar sail inflated with hydrogen fill gas are investigated. We demonstrate that diffusion is alleviated by an on-board fill gas reserve and electrostatic pressure can be alleviated by increasing perihelion distance. For a 0.1 AU perihelion, a 937 m radius sail with a sail mass of 150 kg and a payload mass of 150 kg, perihelion sail temperature is about 1000 K, peak acceleration is about 0.6 g, and solar-system exit velocity is about 400 km/s. After sail deployments, the craft reaches the 200 AU heliopause in 2.5 years, the Sun's inner gravitational focus at 550 AU in about 6.5 years and 2,550 AU in 30 years. The Be hollow-body sail could be applied in the post 2040 time frame to verify general relativity predictions regarding the Sun's inner gravitational focus and to explore particles and fields in the Sun's inner Oort Comet Cloud.
