Robustness of steady state and stochastic cyclicity in generalized coalescence-fragmentation models
Abstract: Processes of coalescence and fragmentation are used to understand the time-evolution of the mass distribution of various systems and may result in a steady state or in stable deterministic or stochastic cycles. Motivated by applications in insurgency warfare we investigate coalescence-fragmentation systems. We begin with a simple model of size-biased coalescence accompanied by shattering into mono… ▽ More

Stochastic gel-shatter cycles in coalescence-fragmentation models
Abstract: We describe a new phenomenon in models of coalescence and fragmentation, that of gel-shatter cycles. These are dynamical, unforced, stochastic cycles in which slow, approximately deterministic coalescence up to and beyond gelation is followed by abrupt random shattering. We describe their appearance in simulations of stochastic models with multiplicative kernels for coalescence and spontaneous fra… ▽ More

Changepoint analysis of historical battle deaths
Abstract: It has been claimed and disputed that World War II has been followed by a `long peace', an unprecedented decline of war. We conduct a full changepoint analysis of well-documented, publicly-available battle deaths datasets, using new techniques that enable the robust detection of changes in the statistical properties of such heavy-tailed data. We first test and calibrate these techniques. We then d… ▽ More

Kepler unbound: some elegant curiosities of classical mechanics
Abstract: We describe two exotic systems of classical mechanics: the McIntosh-Cisneros-Zwanziger ('MICZ') Kepler system, of motion of a charged particle in the presence of a modified dyon; and Gibbons and Manton's description of the slow motion of well-separated solitonic ('BPS') monopoles using Taub NUT space. Twisted Yangian symmetry of the open Hubbard model
Abstract: We show that, in the open Hubbard model with integrable boundary conditions, the bulk Yangian symmetry is broken to a twisted Yangian. We prove that the associated charges commute with the Hamiltonian and the reflection matrix, and that they form a coideal subalgebra.

Scaling of human body mass with height: the Body Mass Index revisited
Abstract: We adapt a biomechanical argument of Rashevsky, which places limits on the stress experienced by a torso supported by the legs, to deduce that body mass $m$ of growing children should scale as the $p$th power of height $h$ with $7/3<p<8/3$. Further arguments based on stability and heat loss suggest that $p$ should be close to 8/3. The arguments are extended to suggest that waist circumference… ▽ More

Rational R-matrices, centralizer algebras and tensor identities for e_6 and e_7 exceptional families of Lie algebras
Abstract: We use Cvitanovic's diagrammatic techniques to construct the rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated with the $e_6$ and $e_7$ families of Lie algebras, and thus explain Westbury's observations about their uniform spectral decompositions. In doing so we explore the extensions of the Brauer and symmetric group algebras to the centralizer algebras of $e_7$ and $e_6$ on their lowes… ▽ More

Affine quantum groups
Abstract: Affine quantum groups are certain pseudo-quasitriangular Hopf algebras that arise in mathematical physics in the context of integrable quantum field theory, integrable quantum spin chains, and solvable lattice models. Quantum, higher-spin, local charges in symmetric space sigma models
Abstract: Potential anomalies are analysed for the local spin-3 and spin-4 classically conserved currents in any two-dimensional sigma model on a compact symmetric space $G/H$, with $G$ and $H$ classical groups. Quantum local conserved charges are shown to exist in exactly those models which also possess quantum non-local (Yangian) charges. There are implications for the physical spectrum and for the semiclassical soliton mass corrections.
