We consider a class of toy models describing a fermion field coupled with a boson field. The model can be viewed as a Yukawa model but with scalar fermions. As in our first paper, the interaction kernels are assumed bounded in the fermionic momentum variable and decaying like $|q|^{-p}$ for large boson momenta $q$. With no restrictions on the coupling strength, we prove norm resolvent convergence to an ultraviolet renormalized Hamiltonian, when the ultraviolet cutoff is removed. We do this by subtracting a sufficiently large, but finite, number of recursively defined self-energy counter-terms, which may be interpreted as arising from a perturbation expansion of the ground state energy. The renormalization procedure requires a spatial cutoff and works in three dimensions provided $p>\frac12$, which is as close as one may expect to the physically natural exponent $p = \frac12$.

In this paper we investigate a family of models for a qubit interacting with a bosonic field. More precisely, we find asymptotic limits of the Hamiltonian as the strength of the interaction tends to infinity. The main result has two applications. First of all, we show that self-energy renormalisation schemes similar to that of the Nelson model will never give a physically interesting result. This is because any limit obtained through such a scheme would be independent of the qubit. Secondly, we find that exited states exist in the massive Spin-Boson models for sufficiently large interaction strengths. We are also able to compute the asymptotic limit of many physical quantities.

In this paper we analyse a family of models for a qubit interacting with a bosonic field. These models have a parity symmetry, which enables them to have a ground state even in some infrared irregular cases. In this paper we investigate this symmetry and consider higher order perturbations of field operators to any even order. We find the domain of selfadjointness and decompose the Hamiltonian into two fiber operators each defined on Fock space. We then prove an HVZ theorem for each operator under minimal conditions, and show that the ground state is always associated with the same fiber operator, while eigenvalues of the other fiber operator corresponds to exited states. Thus the problem of analysing the ground state and exited states is reduced to a simpler problem on Fock space.

We report spontaneous appearance of antiferromagnetic order in a model gapped quantum paramagnet Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ induced by a change in bromine concentration x. This transition is qualitatively similar to a z = 1 magnetic quantum critical point. We derive Feynman-Kac formulas for the ultra-violet renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian with a Kato decomposable external potential and for corresponding fiber Hamiltonians in the translation invariant case. We simultaneously treat massive and massless bosons. Furthermore, we present a non-perturbative construction of a renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian in the non-Fock representation defined as the generator of a corresponding Feynman-Kac semi-group. Our novel analysis of the vacuum expectation of the Feynman-Kac integrands shows that, if the external potential and the Pauli-principle are dropped, then the spectrum of the $N$-particle renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian is bounded from below by some negative universal constant times $g^4N^3$, for all values of the coupling constant $g$. A variational argument also yields an upper bound of the same form for large $g^2N$. We further verify that the semi-groups generated by the ultra-violet renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian and its non-Fock version are positivity improving with respect to a natural self-dual cone, if the Pauli principle is ignored. In another application we discuss continuity properties of elements in the range of the semi-group of the renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian.

The magnetization-field curve in the ferromagnetic phase takes an anomalous power-law form with a nonuniversal exponent that is strongly $x$-dependent and mirrors the behavior in the paramagnetic phase. Muon spin rotation experiments demonstrate inhomogeneous magnetic order and indicate the presence of dynamic fluctuating magnetic clusters. These results provide strong evidence for a quantum Griffiths phase on the ferromagnetic side of the quantum phase transition.

As for the pure system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$, pressure allows PHCX with small levels of disorder ($x\leq 7.5\%$) to be driven through a quantum critical point separating a low-pressure quantum paramagnetic phase from magnetic order at high pressures. However, the pressure-induced ordered state is highly inhomogeneous for disorder concentrations $x>1\%$. This behavior might be related to the formation of a quantum Griffiths phase above a critical disorder concentration $7.5\%<x_{\rm c}<15\%$. Br-substitution increases the critical pressure and suppresses critical temperatures and ordered moment sizes.

We present a revised magnetic phase diagram, which shows that the suppression of the magnetic ordering temperature is highly sensitive to small concentrations of holes. Distinct behavior within an intermediate $x$ range ($0.2 \leq x \lesssim 0.6$) suggests that the putative stripe ordered phase extends to lower $x$ than previously thought. Further charge do** ($0.67 \leq x \leq 0.9$) prevents magnetic ordering for $T \gtrsim 1.5~{\rm K}$

The clear single precession frequency observed for Ni, as expected for a homogeneous FM, changes to rather damped oscillation with small V substitution at $x=4$%, confirming magnetic inhomogeneities caused by the less magnetic V environments in the magnetic Ni matrix. Furthermore, local fields and spatial field distributions can be estimated to characterize different inhomogeneous regimes develo** with $x$ in the FM phase of Ni$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$. In the regime of $x=7-10$% a Kubo Toyabe function well describes the low temperature ZF and LF asymmetry data supporting a static Gaussian field distribution. Closer to the quantum critical concentration a single scale static Kubo Toyabe function with one field distribution is not sufficient to describe the muon relaxation. These data indicate that further changes in spatial distributions and dynamics are evolving as expected within the critical regime of a disordered quantum critical point.

All four compounds consist of two-dimensional (2D) square arrays self-assembled from octahedral NiN$_4$$X_2$ units that are bridged by pyz ligands. The 2D layered motifs displayed by \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} are relevant to bifluoride-bridged [Ni(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]$Z$F$_6$ ($Z$ = P, Sb) which also possess the same 2D layers. In contrast, terminal $X$ ligands occupy axial positions in \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} and cause a staggering of adjacent layers. Long-range antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.5 (Cl), 1.9 (Br and NCS) and 2.5~K (I) as determined by heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation. The single-ion anisotropy and $g$ factor of \textbf{2}, \textbf{3} and \textbf{4} are measured by electron spin resonance where no zero--field splitting was found. The magnetism of \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} crosses a spectrum from quasi-two-dimensional to three-dimensional antiferromagnetism. An excellent agreement was found between the pulsed-field magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and $T_\textrm{N}$ of \textbf{2} and \textbf{4}. Magnetization curves for \textbf{2} and \textbf{4} calculated by quantum Monte Carlo simulation also show excellent agreement with the pulsed-field data. \textbf{3} is characterized as a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with the interlayer interaction ($J_\perp$) slightly stronger than the interaction within the two-dimensional [Ni(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ square planes ($J_\textrm{pyz}$).

The d-metal alloy Ni$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ undergoes a quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic ground state to a paramagnetic ground state as the vanadium concentration $x$ is increased. We present magnetization, ac-susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation data at several vanadium concentrations near the critical concentration $x_c \approx11.6%$ at which the onset of ferromagnetic order is suppressed to zero temperature. Below $x_c$, the muon data reveal a broad magnetic field distribution indicative of long-range ordered ferromagnetic state with spatial disorder. We show evidence of magnetic clusters in the ferromagnetic phase and close to the phase boundary in this disordered itinerant system as an important generic ingredient of a disordered quantum phase transition. In contrast, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility above $x_c$ is best described in terms of a magnetic quantum Griffiths phase with a power-law distribution of fluctuation rates of dynamic magnetic clusters. At the lowest temperatures, the onset of a short-range ordered cluster-glass phase is recognized by an increase in the muon depolarization in transverse fields and maxima in ac-susceptibility.

We investigate a magnetic hysteresis loop with a remanent moment that couples to electric polarization to create coupled hysteretic multiferroic behavior in Lu2MnCoO6. Measurements of elastic neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and micro-Hall magnetometry demonstrate an unusual mechanism for the magnetic hysteresis, namely the hysteretic evolution of a microscopic magnetic order, and not classic ferromagnetic domain effects. We show how the frustrated spin system evolves from antiferromagnetism with an incommensurate long-wavelength modulation and strong fluctuations towards a net magnetism. We also clarify the different temperature scales for the onset of ordering, dynamics, and hysteresis.

Muon spin relaxation measurements on some quantum spin ice candidate materials, the insulating pyrochlores Pr2B2O7 (B = Sn, Zr, Hf), have been performed for temperatures in the range 0.05-280 K. The results are indicative of a static distribution of magnetic moments which appears to grow on cooling and whose size at low temperatures is significantly larger than that expected for Pr nuclear moments. Using density functional theory we show how this effect can be explained via a hyperfine enhancement arising from a splitting of the non-Kramers doublet ground states on Pr ions close to the muon which itself causes a highly anisotropic distortion field. We provide a quantitative relationship between this effect and the measured temperature dependence of the muon relaxation and discuss the relevance of these observations to muon experiments in other frustrated magnetic materials.

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements of spin excitations in the one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cu(pyz)(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$. Using density-functional theory we propose muon sites and assess the degree of perturbation the muon probe causes on the system. We identify a site involving the muon forming a hydroxyl-type bond with an oxygen on the nitrate group that is sensitive to the characteristic spin dynamics of the system. Our measurements of the spin dynamics show that in the temperature range $T_{\mathrm{N}}<T<J$ (between the ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the exchange energy scale $J$) the field-dependent muon spin relaxation is characteristic of diffusive transport of spin excitations over a wide range of applied fields. We also identify a possible crossover at higher applied fields in the muon probe's response to the fluctuation spectrum, to a regime where the muon detects early-time transport with a ballistic character. This behavior is contrasted with that found for $T>J$ and that in the related two-dimensional system Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_{2}$.

We discuss Hilbert space-valued stochastic differential equations associated with the heat semi-groups of the standard model of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics and of corresponding fiber Hamiltonians for translation invariant systems. In particular, we prove the existence of a stochastic flow satisfying the strong Markov property and the Feller property. To this end we employ an explicit solution ansatz. In the matrix-valued case, i.e., if the electron spin is taken into account, it is given by a series of operator-valued time-ordered integrals, whose integrands are factorized into annihilation, preservation, creation, and scalar parts. The Feynman-Kac formula implied by these results is new in the matrix-valued case. Furthermore, we discuss stochastic differential equations and Feynman-Kac representations for an operator-valued integral kernel of the semi-group. As a byproduct we obtain analogous results for Nelson's model.

We have studied the magnetic properties and spin-dynamics of the structurally-ordered double perovskite Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Our neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and ac-susceptibility measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases on cooling from room temperature down to 2 K. In the first AFM phase, with transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}=108$ K, cobalt (3$d^7$, $S=3/2$) and osmium (5$d^2$, $S=1$) moments fluctuate dynamically, while their \textit{average} effective moments undergo long-range order. In the second AFM phase with $T_{\mathrm{N}}=67$ K, cobalt moments first become frozen and induce a noncollinear spin-canted AFM state, while dynamically fluctuating osmium moments are later frozen into a randomly canted state at $T\approx 5$ K. Our \textit{ab initio} calculations indicate that the effective exchange coupling between cobalt and osmium sites is rather weak, so that cobalt and osmium sublattices exhibit different ground states and spin-dynamics, making Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$ distinct from previously reported double-perovskite compounds.

We observe a transition from a quasi-two-dimensional to a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic phase at 9.1 kbar, driven by a rotation of the Jahn-Teller axis. Long-range antiferromagnetic ordering is seen in both regimes, as well as a phase separation in the critical pressure region. The magnetic dimensionality switching as pressure is increased is accompanied by a halving of the primary magnetic exchange energy J and a fivefold decrease in the ordering temperature T_N. J decreases gradually with pressure in the two-dimensional phase, and then increases in the one-dimensional regime. We relate both effects to the changes in the crystal structure with applied pressure.

The magnetic field experienced by muons is estimated to be 0.7 mT at low-temperature, around two orders of magnitude smaller than that in other pyrochlore iridates. These results suggest that the low-temperature state represents ordering of exceptionally small magnetic moments with persistent weak dynamics. The relaxation rate increases further below 0.23(4) K, coincident with a growth in the specific heat, suggesting the existence of a second low-temperature magnetic transition.

We report on an investigation into the dynamics of the stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, a material recently shown to have an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum. A combination of magnetic susceptibility, muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements strongly suggest that the physics is determined by a disordered configuration of charge and spin stripes whose frustrated magnetic degrees of freedom are strongly dynamic at high temperature and which freeze out in a glassy manner as the temperature is lowered. Our results broadly confirm a recent theoretical prediction, but show that the charge quenching remains incomplete well below the charge ordering temperature and reveal, in detail, the manner in which the magnetic degrees of freedom are frozen.

Muon-spin relaxation (μSR) is a sensitive probe of magnetism, but its utility can be severely limited by the lack of knowledge of the muon implantation site and the extent to which the muon perturbs its host. We demonstrate systematically that these problems can be addressed accurately using electronic-structure calculations. We show that diamagnetic muons introduce significant short-ranged distortions in ionic insulators that would lead to systematic errors on magnetic moments determined by μSR, and quantify these. The F--μ--F complex formed by muons in many fluorides can be understood as an exotic molecule-in-a-crystal defect with a zero-point energy larger than that of any naturally-occurring triatomic molecule.

The purpose of these notes is to give a fairly narrow but thorough introduction to the spectral analysis of Hamiltonians and standard Liouvilleans describing finite dimensional small systems linearly coupled to a scalar massless field or reservoir. The Hamiltonians describe the system at zero temperature, and the standard Liouvillean implements unitarily the dynamics of the system at positive temperature.
We focus our attention on results valid at arbitrary coupling strength and whose proofs are purely operator theoretic, i.e. for the standard Liouvillean does not make use of the underlying modular structure. This means that important structure results at positive temperature that does not seem to have a purely operator theoretic proof will only be reviewed.

We show asymptotic completeness of two-body scattering for a class of translation invariant models describing a single quantum particle (the electron) linearly coupled to a massive scalar field (bosons). Our proof is based on a recently established Mourre estimate for these models. In contrast to previous approaches, it requires no number cutoff, no restriction on the particle-field coupling strength, and no restriction on the magnitude of total momentum. Energy, however, is restricted by the two-boson threshold, admitting only scattering of a dressed electron and a single asymptotic boson. The class of models we consider include the UV-cutoff Nelson and polaron models.

In this paper we continue the study of the energy-momentum spectrum of a class of translation invariant, linearly coupled, and massive Hamiltonians from non-relativistic quantum field theory. The class contains the Hamiltonians of E. Nelson and H. Froehlich. One of us previously investigated the structure of the ground state mass shell and the bottom of the continuous energy-momentum spectrum. Here we study the continuous energy-momentum spectrum itself up to the two-boson threshold, the threshold for energetic support of two-boson scattering states. We prove that non-threshold embedded mass shells have finite multiplicity and can accumulate only at thresholds. We furthermore establish the non-existence of singular continuous energy-momentum spectrum. Our results hold true for all values of the particle-field coupling strength but only below the two-boson threshold. The proof revolves around the construction of a certain relative velocity vector field used to construct a conjugate operator in the sense of Mourre.

The interplay and coexistence of superconducting, magnetic and structural order parameters in NaFe{1-x}Co{x}As has been studied using SQUID magnetometry, muon-spin rotation and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. Substituting Fe by Co weakens the ordered magnetic state through both a suppression of T_N and a reduction in the size of the ordered moment. Upon further substitution of Fe by Co the high sensitivity of the muon as a local magnetic probe reveals a magnetically disordered phase, in which the size of the moment continues to decrease and falls to zero around the same point at which the magnetically-driven structural distortion is no longer resolvable. Both magnetism and the structural distortion are weakened as the robust superconducting state is established.

The present paper gives an abstract method to prove that possibly embedded eigenstates of a self-adjoint operator $H$ lie in the domain of the $k^{th}$ power of a conjugate operator $A$. Conjugate means here that $H$ and $A$ have a positive commutator locally near the relevant eigenvalue in the sense of Mourre. The only requirement is $C^{k+1}(A)$ regularity of $H$. Regarding integer $k$, our result is optimal. Under a natural boundedness assumption of the multiple commutators we prove that the eigenstate 'dilated' by $\exp(iθA)$ is analytic in a strip around the real axis. In particular, the eigenstate is an analytic vector with respect to $A$. Natural applications are 'dilation analytic' systems satisfying a Mourre estimate, where our result can be viewed as an abstract version of a theorem due to Balslev and Combes. As a new application we consider the massive Spin-Boson Model.

For systems of $N$ charged fermions (e.g. electrons) interacting with longitudinal optical quantized lattice vibrations of a polar crystal we derive upper and lower bounds on the minimal energy within the model of H. Fröhlich. The only parameters of this model, after removing the ultraviolet cutoff, are the constants $U>0$ and $α>0$ measuring the electron-electron and the electron-phonon coupling strengths. They are constrained by the condition $\sqrt{2}α<U$, which follows from the dependence of $U$ and $α$ on electrical properties of the crystal. We show that the large $N$ asymptotic behavior of the minimal energy $E_N$ changes at $\sqrt{2}α=U$ and that $\sqrt{2}α\leq U$ is necessary for thermodynamic stability: for $\sqrt{2}α> U$ the phonon-mediated electron-electron attraction overcomes the Coulomb repulsion and $E_N$ behaves like $-N^{7/3}$.
