Misfit layer compounds, heterostructures composed by a regular alternating stacking of rocksalt monochalcogenides bilayers and few-layer transition metal dichalchogenides, are an emergent platform to investigate highly doped transition metal dichalcogenides. Among them, (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$)$_2$ displays Ising superconductivity, while the presence of a charge density wave (CDW) in the material is still under debate. Here, by using polarized Raman spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we show that NbSe$_2$ undergoes a do**-driven collapse of the CDW ordering within the misfit, and no signature of the CDW is detected down to 8~K. We provide a complete experimental and theoretical description of the lattice dynamics of this misfit compound. We show that the vibrational properties are obtained from those of the two subunits, namely the LaSe unit and the NbSe$_2$ bilayer, in the presence of a suitable field-effect do**, and then highlight the 2D nature of the lattice dynamics of NbSe$_2$ within the (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$)$_2$ 3D structure.

The lattice dynamics of the superconducting materials LaFeSiH and LaFeSiO as well as their intermetallic precursor LaFeSi are investigated by polarized Raman spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, together with X-ray and advanced electron diffraction techniques for their structural analysis. We find that the Fe-dominated Raman-active modes reflect the chemical peculiarities of these silicides compared to their pnictide counterparts, with enhanced structural couplings between the FeSi layer and the spacer that can be related to the ionic vs covalent character of the latter. In addition, we find signatures of enhanced electron-phonon coupling for some of the Raman-active modes. Beyond that, our study reveals intriguing Fe-based Raman features as well as structural subtleties in LaFeSiH suggesting that this superconductor may formally be non-centrosymmetric.

In recent years, there has been a fervent search for room-temperature superconductivity within the binary hydrides. However, as the number of untested compounds dwindled, it became natural to begin searching within the ternary hydrides. This led to the controversial discovery of room-temperature superconductivity at only 1GPa in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride [Dasenbrock-Gammon et al., Nature 615, 244 (2023)] and consequently provided much impetus for the synthesis of nitrogen-based ternary hydrides. Here, we report the synthesis of stable trigonal LuH$_3$ by hydrogenating pure lutetium which was subsequently pressurised to $\sim$2GPa in a dilute-N$_2$/He-rich pressure medium. Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction were used to characterise the structures throughout. After depressurising, energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopies characterised the final compound. Though our compound under pressure exhibits similar structural behaviour to the Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. sample, we do not observe any nitrogen within the structure of the recovered sample at ambient pressure. We observe two cubic structures under pressure that simultaneously explain the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra observed: the first corresponds well to $Fm\overline{3}m$ LuH$_{2+x}$, whilst the latter is an $Ia\overline{3}$-type structure.

Competition between exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy may bring new magnetic states that are of great current interest. An applied hydrostatic pressure can further be used to tune their balance. In this work we investigate the magnetization process of a biaxial antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field applied along the easy axis. We find that the single metamagnetic transition of the Ising type observed in this material under ambient pressure transforms under hydrostatic pressure into two transitions, a first-order spin flop transition followed by a second order transition towards a polarized ferromagnetic state near saturation. This reversible tuning into a new magnetic phase is obtained in layered bulk CrSBr at low temperature by varying the interlayer distance using high hydrostatic pressure, which efficiently acts on the interlayer magnetic exchange, and is probed by magneto-optical spectroscopy.

Magnetic layered materials have emerged recently as promising systems to introduce magnetism in structures based on two-dimensional (2D) materials and to investigate exotic magnetic ground states in the 2D limit. In this work, we apply high hydrostatic pressures up to P = 8.7 GPa to the bulk layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ to tune the collective lattice excitations (phonons) in resonance with magnetic excitations (magnons). Close to P = 4 GPa, the magnon-phonon resonance is achieved and the strong coupling between these collective modes leads to the formation of new quasi-particles, the magnon-polarons, evidenced in our low temperature Raman scattering experiments by a particular avoided crossing behavior between the phonon and the doubly degenerate antiferromagnetic magnon. At the pressure-induced magnon-phonon resonance, three distinct coupled modes emerge. As it is mainly defined by intralayer properties, we show that the energy of the magnon is nearly pressure independent. We additionally apply high magnetic fields up to B = 30 T to fully identify and characterize the magnon excitations, and to explore the different magnon-polaron regimes for which the phonon has an energy lower-, equal to-, or higher- than the magnon energy. The description of our experimental data requires introducing a phonon-phonon coupling not taken into account in actual calculations.

Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity in a novel compound LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ that incorporates a crystallogen element, Si, and challenges the above picture: considering the strongly squeezed Fe-Si height of 0.94 Å, the superconducting transition at $T_{c}$ = 10 K is unusually high. In the normal state, the resistivity displays non-Fermi-liquid behavior while NMR experiments evidence weak antiferromagnetic fluctuations. According to first-principles calculations, the Fermi surface of this material is dominated by hole pockets without nesting properties, which explains the strongly suppressed tendency towards magnetic order and suggests that the emergence of superconductivity materializes in a distinct set-up, as compared to the standard $s_\pm$- and $d$-wave electron-pocket-based situations. These properties and its simple-to-implement synthesis make LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ a particularly promising platform to study the interplay between structure, electron correlations and superconductivity.

Although progress with twisted graphene nano-devices is boosting the superconductivity that is the consequence of their Moiré flat electronic bands, the immense choice for future development is an obstacle for their optimisation. We report here that soft-chemistry deintercalation of KC$_8$ breaks down graphite stacking generating a strong disorder that includes stacking twists and variable local do**. We obtain a bulk graphite whose individual crystallites have different stackings with arbitrary twists and do**, scanning in the same sample a huge number of stacking configurations. We perform magnetisation measurements on batches with different synthesis conditions. The disorder weakens the huge diamagnetism of graphite, revealing several phase transitions. A "ferromagnetic-like" magnetisation appears with Curie temperatures T$_0$$\sim$450K, that has to be subtracted from the measured magnetisation. Depending on sample synthesis, anomalies towards diamagnetic states appear at T$_c$$\sim$110K (3 samples), $\sim$240K (4 samples), $\sim$320K (2 samples). Electrical resistivity measurements yield anomalies for the T$_c\sim$240K transition, with one sample showing a 90% drop. We discuss the possibility that these (diamagnetic and resistitive) anomalies could be due to superconductivity.

The quadruple Calcium manganite (CaMn7O12) is a multiferroic material that exhibits a giant magnetically-induced ferroelectric polarization which makes it very interesting for magnetoelectric applications. Here, we report the Raman spectroscopy study on this compound of both the phonon modes and the low energy excitations from 4 K to room temperature. A detailed study of the Raman active phonon excitations shows that three phonon modes evidence a spin-phonon coupling at TN2 = 50 K. In particular, we show that the mode at 432 cm-1 associated to Mn(B)O6 (B position of the perovskite) rotations around the [111] cubic diagonal is impacted by the magnetic transition at 50 K and its coupling to the new modulation of the Mn spin in the (a,b) plane. At low energies, two large low energy excitations are observed at 25 and 47 cm-1. The first one disappears at 50 K and the second one at 90 K. We have associated these excitations to electro-magneto-active modes.

The mode at 269 cm-1 associated to the displacement of the apical Ho3+ ions along the c direction presents an abrupt change of slope at TN showing that the role of the rare earth ions can not be neglected in the magnetic transition. We have identified magnon and crystal field excitations. The temperature dependence of the magnetic excitations has been compared to the Mn and Ho moment and indicates that the exchange interaction pattern between Mn and Ho atoms drives the uniaxial anisotropy gap above the Mn-spin-rotation transition.

The pressure evolution of the Raman active electronic excitations of the transition metal dichalcogenides 2H-TaS$_2$ is followed through the pressure phase diagram embedding incommensurate charge-density-wave and superconducting states. At high pressure, the charge-density-wave is found to collapse at 8.5~GPa. In the coexisting charge-density-wave and superconducting orders, we unravel a strong in-gap superconducting mode, attributed to a Higgs mode, coexisting with the expected incoherent Cooper-pair breaking signature. The latter remains in the pure superconducting state reached above 8.5~GPa. Our report constitutes the first observation of such Raman active Higgs mode since the longstanding unique case 2H-NbSe$_2$.

We show that the ERS continuum is dominated by interband chiral excitations of $A_{2}$ symmetry and displays a characteristic Pauli-blocking behavior similar to the monolayer case. Crucially, we show that non-chiral excitations make a vanishing contribution to the Raman cross-section due to destructive interference effects in the Raman amplitude matrix elements. This is in a marked contrast to optical absorption measurements and opens interesting venues for the use of Raman scattering as a selective probe of chiral degrees of freedom in topological matter and other 2D crystals.

A polarized electronic Raman scattering study reveals the emergence of symmetry dependence in the electronic Raman response of single crystalline URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below the Kondo crossover scale $T_K\sim100K$. In particular, the development of a coherent Kondo pseudo-gap predominantly in the E$_g$ channel highlights strong anisotropy in the Kondo physics in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ that has previously been neglected in theoretical models of this system. A calculation of the Raman vertices demonstrates that the strongest Raman vertex does indeed develop within the E$_g$ channel for interband transitions and reaches a maximum along the diagonals of the Brillouin zone, implying a d-wave-like geometry for the Kondo pseudo-gap. Below the hidden order phase transition at $T_{HO}= 17.5K$, the magnitude of the pseudo-gap is found to be enhanced. Moreover, the anisotropy of the pseudo-gap is similar in form to that proposed for the chiral d-wave (E$_g$) superconducting state that appears below $T_c=1.5K$.

We report the evolution of the electronic nematic susceptibility in FeSe via Raman scattering as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to 5.8 GPa where the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ reaches its maximum. The critical nematic fluctuations observed at low pressure vanish above 1.6 GPa, indicating they play a marginal role in the four-fold enhancement of $T_{c}$ at higher pressures. The collapse of nematic fluctuations appears to be linked to a suppression of low energy electronic excitations which manifests itself by optical phonon anomalies at around 2 GPa, in agreement with lattice dynamical and electronic structure calculations using local density approximation combined with dynamical mean field theory. Our results reveal two different regimes of nematicity in the phase diagram of FeSe under pressure: a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability of the Fermi surface at low pressure and a magnetic driven orthorhombic distortion at higher pressure.

Despite being usually considered two competing phenomena, charge-density-wave and superconductivity coexist in few systems, the most emblematic one being the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbSe$_2$. This unusual condition is responsible for specific Raman signatures across the two phase transitions in this compound. While the appearance of a soft phonon mode is a well-established fingerprint of the charge-density-wave order, the nature of the sharp sub-gap mode emerging below the superconducting temperature is still under debate. In this work we use the external pressure as a knob to unveil the delicate interplay between the two orders, and consequently the nature of the superconducting mode. Thanks to an advanced extreme-conditions Raman technique we are able to follow the pressure evolution and the simultaneous collapse of the two intertwined charge density wave and superconducting modes. The comparison with microscopic calculations in a model system supports the Higgs-type nature of the superconducting mode and suggests that charge-density-wave and superconductivity in 2H-NbSe$_2$ involve mutual electronic degrees of freedom. These findings fill knowledge gap on the electronic mechanisms at play in transition metal dichalcogenides, a crucial step to fully exploit their properties in few-layers systems optimized for devices applications.

We find that this pnictogen-free compound is isostructural to LaFeAsO, with a similar low-temperature tetragonal to orthorhombic distortion. Using density functional theory we show that this system is also a multiband metal in which the orthorhombic distortion is likely related to single-stripe antiferromagnetic order. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that these features occur side-by-side with superconductivity, which is suppressed by external pressure.

A large excitation, active only in the E$_{g}$ symmetry, is reported. It has been assigned to a crystal electric field excitation on the Uranium site. We discuss how this constrains the crystal electric field scheme of the Uranium ions. Furthermore, three excitations in the A$_{1g}$ symmetry are observed. They have been associated to double Raman phonon processes consistently with ab initio calculations of the phonons dispersion.

The spontaneous appearance of nematicity, a state of matter that breaks rotation but not translation symmetry, is one of the most intriguing property of the iron based superconductors (Fe SC), and has relevance for the cuprates as well. Establishing the critical electronic modes behind nematicity remains however a challenge, because their associated susceptibilities are not easily accessible by conventional probes. Here using FeSe as a model system, and symmetry resolved electronic Raman scattering as a probe, we unravel the presence of critical charge nematic fluctuations near the structural / nematic transition temperature, T$_S\sim$ 90 K. The diverging behavior of the associated nematic susceptibility foretells the presence of a Pomeranchuk instability of the Fermi surface with d-wave symmetry. The excellent scaling between the observed nematic susceptibility and elastic modulus data demonstrates that the structural distortion is driven by this d-wave Pomeranchuk transition. Our results make a strong case for charge induced nematicity in FeSe.

We report the direct observation of polarization resolved electronic Raman scattering in a gated monolayer graphene device. The evolution of the electronic Raman scattering spectra with gate voltage and its polarization dependence are in full agreement with theoretical expectations for non-resonant Raman processes involving interband electron-hole excitations across the Dirac cone. We further show that the spectral dependence of the electronic Raman scattering signal can be simply described by the dynamical polarizability of graphene in the long wavelength limit. The possibility to directly observe Dirac fermion excitations in graphene opens the way to promising Raman investigations of electronic properties of graphene and other 2D crystals.

We study the temperature-dependent electronic B1g Raman response of a slightly under-doped single crystal HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ with a superconducting critical temperature Tc=122 K. Our main finding is that the superconducting pair-breaking peak is associated with a dip on its higher-energy side, disappearing together at Tc. This result hints at an unconventional pairing mechanism, whereas spectral weight lost in the dip is transferred to the pair-breaking peak at lower energies. This conclusion is supported by cellular dynamical mean-field theory on the Hubbard model, which is able to reproduce all the main features of the B1g Raman response and explain the peak-dip behavior in terms of a nontrivial relationship between the superconducting and the pseudo gaps.

Optical spectroscopy has been combined with computational and theoretical techniques to show how the spin dynamics in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 responds to the application of hydrostatic pressure and its corresponding series of structural phase transitions from R3c to the Pnma phases. As pressure increases, multiple spin excitations associated with non-collinear cycloidal magnetism collapse into two excitations, which show jump discontinuities at some of the ensuing crystal phase transitions. Effective Hamiltonian approach provides information on the electrical polarization and structural changes of the oxygen octahedra through the successive structural phases. The extracted parameters are then used in a Ginzburg-Landau model to reproduce the evolution with pressure of the spin waves excitations observed at low energy and we demonstrate that the structural phases and the magnetic anisotropy drive and control the spin excitations.

Electronic Raman scattering with in and out of (ab) plane polarizations have been performed on HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d in a slightly underdoped single crystal with a critical temperature Tc=122 K. We find that the d-wave pairing gap at the antinodes is higher in energy (14 kBTc) than in other cuprates and that it varies very slowly up to Tc. This hints at a strong coupling nature of the pairing mechanism. Interestingly, we reveal that the pairing-gap feature in the Raman response displays a complex peak-dip-hump structure, in a fashion reminiscent of what observed by angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212). We detect two other distinct superconducting peaks at 5kBTc and 7kBTc when probing respectively around the nodes and on the whole Fermi surface. Finally we establish that the pairing gap at the antinodes is detected both for (ab) plane and for c-axis light polarizations. This shows that the quasiparticle dynamics along the c-axis is intimately connected to the antinodal one in the (ab) plane.

We measured the polarized optical conductivity of URu$_2$Si$_2$ from room temperature down to 5 K, covering the Kondo state, the coherent Kondo liquid regime, and the hidden-order phase. The normal state is characterized by an anisotropic behavior between the ab plane and c axis responses. The ab plane optical conductivity is strongly influenced by the formation of the coherent Kondo liquid: a sharp Drude peak develops and a hybridization gap at 12 meV leads to a spectral weight transfer to mid-infrared energies. The c axis conductivity has a different behavior: the Drude peak already exists at 300 K and no particular anomaly or gap signature appears in the coherent Kondo liquid regime. When entering the hidden-order state, both polarizations see a dramatic decrease in the Drude spectral weight and scattering rate, compatible with a loss of about 50 % of the carriers at the Fermi level. At the same time a density-wave like gap appears along both polarizations at about 6.5 meV at 5 K. This gap closes respecting a mean field thermal evolution in the ab plane. Along the c axis it remains roughly constant and it "fills up" rather than closing.

Above p=0.22 the three energies merge, below p=0.12, the A1g scale is no more detectable while the B1g and B2g scales become constant in energy. In between, the A1g and B1g scales increase monotonically with under-do** while the B2g one exhibits a maximum at p=0.16. The three superconducting energy scales appear to be an universal feature of hole-doped cuprates. We propose that the non trivial do** dependence of the three scales originates from Fermi surface topology changes and reveals competing orders inside the superconducting dome.

We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($Γ_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the Kondo regime. Through optical conductivity, we detect clear signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling, with temperature dependent spectral weight and Fano line shape of some phonon modes. Surprisingly, the line shapes of two phonon modes, E$_u$(1) and A$_{2u}$(2), show opposite temperature dependencies. The A$_{2u}$(2) mode loses its Fano shape below 150 K, whereas the E$_u$(1) mode acquires it below 100~K, in the Kondo cross-over regime. This may point out to momentum-dependent Kondo physics. By inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have drawn the full dispersion of the phonon modes between 300~K and 2~K. No remarkable temperature dependence has been obtained including through the hidden order transition. {\it Ab initio} calculations with the spin-orbit coupling are in good agreement with the data except for a few low energy branches with propagation in the (a,b) plane.

The hidden order state is characterized by a sharp excitation at 1.7 meV and a gap in the electronic continuum below 6.8 meV. Both Raman signatures are of pure A2g symmetry. By comparing the behavior of the Raman sharp excitation and the neutron resonance at Q0=(0,0,1), we provide new evidence, constrained by selection rules of the two probes, that the hidden order state breaks the translational symmetry along the c axis such that Gamma and Z points fold on top of each other. The observation of these distinct Raman features with a peculiar A2g symmetry as a signature of the hidden order phase places strong constraints on current theories of the hidden order in URu2Si2.

Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the do**, at which the normal state pseudogap closes, coincides with a Lifshitz quantum phase transition where the active hole-like Fermi surface becomes electron-like. This conclusion suggests that the microscopic cause of the pseudogap is sensitive to the Fermi surface topology. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting transition temperature is unaffected by this transition, demonstrating that their origins are different on the overdoped side.

We report electronic Raman scattering measurements of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in their magnetic - Spin Density Wave (SDW) phase. The spectra display multiple, polarization-resolved SDW gaps as expected in a band-folding itinerant picture for a multiband system. The temperature dependence of the SDW gaps reveals an unusual evolution of the reconstructed electronic structure with at least one gap being activated only well below the magnetic SDW transition $T_N$. A comparison with temperature dependent Hall measurements allows us to assign this activated behavior to a change in the Fermi surface topology deep in the SDW phase, which we attribute to the disappearance of a hole-like Fermi pocket. Our results highlight the strong sensitivity of the low energy electronic structure to temperature in iron-arsenide superconductors.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) is a promising material for making two-dimensional crystals and flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices at the nanoscale. MoS$_2$ flakes can show high mobilities and have even been integrated in nanocircuits . A fundamental requirement for such use is efficient thermal transport. Electronic transport generates heat which needs to be evacuated, more crucially so in nanostructures. Anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering is the dominant intrinsic limitation to thermal transport in insulators. Here, using appropriate samples, ultra-low energy Raman spectroscopy and first principles calculations, we provide a full experimental and theoretical description of compression and shear modes of few-layer (FL) MoS$_2$. We demonstrate that the compression modes are strongly anharmonic with a marked enhancement of phonon-phonon scattering as the number of layers is reduced, most likely a general feature of nanolayered materials with weak interlayer coupling.

Lattice and spin excitations have been studied by Raman scattering in hexagonal YbMnO3 single crystals. The temperature dependences of the phonon modes show that the E2 mode at 256 cm-1 related to the displacement of Mn and O ions in a-b plane is coupled to the spin order. The A1 phonon mode at 678 cm-1 presents a soft mode behavior at the Neel temperature. Connected to the motion of the apical oxygen ions along the c direction, this mode controls directly the Mn-Mn interactions between adjacent Mn planes and the superexchange path. Crystal field and magnon mode excitations have been identified. The temperature investigation of the spin excitations shows that the spin structure is strongly influence by the Yb-Mn interaction. Under a magnetic field along the c axis, we have investigated the magnetic reordering and its impact on the spin excitations.

The temperature dependence of the phonon spectrum in the superconducting transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbS$_2$ is measured by diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering. A deep, wide and strongly temperature dependent softening, of the two lowest energy longitudinal phonons bands, appears along the $\mathrm{ΓM}$ symmetry line in reciprocal space. In sharp contrast to the iso-electronic compounds 2H-NbSe$_2$, the soft phonons energies are finite, even at very low temperature, and no charge density wave instability occurs, in disagreement with harmonic ab-initio calculations. We show that 2H-NbS$_2$ is at the verge of the charge density wave transition and its occurrence is only suppressed by the large anharmonic effects. Moreover, the anharmonicity and the electron phonon coupling both show a strong in-plane anisotropy.

We present Raman experiments on underdoped and overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) (Bi-2212) single crystals. We reveal the pseudogap in the electronic Raman spectra in the B1g and B2g geometries. In these geometries we probe respectively, the antinodal (AN) and nodal (N) regions corresponding to the principal axes and the diagonal of the Brillouin zone. The pseudogap appears in underdoped regime and manifests itself in the B1g spectra by a strong depletion of the low energy electronic continuum as the temperature decreases. We define a temperature T* below which the depletion appears and the pseudogap energy, omegaPG the energy at which the depeletion closes.
The pseudogap is also present in the B2g spectra but the depletion opens at higher energy than in the B1g spectra. We observe the creation of new electronic states inside the depletion as we enter the superconducting phase. This leads us to conclude (as proposed by S. Sakai et al.) that the pseudogap has a different structure than the superconducting gap and competes with it. We show that the nodal quasiparticle dynamic is very robust and almost insensitive to the pseudogap phase contrary to the antinodal quasiparticle dynamic. We finally reveal, in contrast to what it is usually admitted,an increase of the nodal quasiparticle spectral weight with underdo**. We interpret this result as the consequence of a possible Fermi surface disturbances in the do** range p=0.1-0.2.

We have performed Raman measurements on TbMnO3 single crystal under magnetic field along the three crystallographic directions. The flip of the spin spiral plane creates an electromagnon excitation. In addition to the electromagnons induced by the Heisenberg coupling, we have detected the electromagnon created by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction along the c axis. We have identified all the vibrational modes of TbMnO3. Their temperature dependences show that only one phonon observed along the polarization axis is sensitive to the ferroelectric transition. This mode is tied to the Tb3+ ion displacements that contribute to the ferroelectric polarization.

We reveal the full energy-momentum structure of the pseudogap of underdoped high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Our combined theoretical and experimental analysis explains the spectral-weight suppression observed in the B2g Raman response at finite energies in terms of a pseudogap appearing in the single-electron excitation spectra above the Fermi level in the nodal direction of momentum space. This result suggests an s-wave pseudogap (which never closes in the energy-momentum space), distinct from the d-wave superconducting gap. Recent tunneling and photoemission experiments on underdoped cuprates also find a natural explanation within the s-wave-pseudogap scenario.

We have studied the impact of the magnetic field on the electromagnon excitations in TbMnO3 crystal. Applying magnetic field along the c axis, we show that the electromagnons transform into pure antiferromagnetic modes, losing their polar character. Entering in the paraelectric phase, we are able to track the spectral weight transfer from the electromagnons to the magnon excitations and we discuss the magnetic excitations underlying the electromagnons. We also point out the phonons involved in the phase transition process. This reveals that the Mn-O distance plays a key role in understanding the ferroelectricity and the polar character of the electromagnons. Magnetic field measurements along the b axis allow us to detect a new electromagnon resonance in agreement with a Heisenberg model.

We report Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. The electronic Raman continuum shows a strong spectral weight redistribution upon entering the magnetic phase induced by the opening of the Spin Density Wave (SDW) gap. It displays two spectral features that weaken with do**, which are assigned to two SDW induced electronic transitions. Raman symmetry arguments are discussed to identify the origin of these electronic transitions in terms of orbital ordering in the magnetic phase. Our data do not seem consistent with an orbital ordering scenario and advocate for a more conventional band-folding picture with two types of electronic transitions in the SDW state, a high energy transition between two anti-crossed SDW bands and a lower energy transition involving a folded band that do not anti-cross in the SDW state. The latter transition could be linked to the presence of Dirac cones in the electronic dispersion of the magnetic state. The spectra in the SDW state also show significant coupling between the arsenide optical phonon and the electronic continuum. The symmetry dependence of the arsenide phonon intensity indicates a strong in-plane anisotropy of the dielectric susceptibility in the magnetic state.

To face the challenges lying beyond current CMOS-based technology, new paradigms for information processing are required. Magnonics proposes to use spin waves to carry and process information, in analogy with photonics that relies on light waves, with several advantageous features such as potential operation in the THz range and excellent coupling to spintronics. Several magnonic analog and digital logic devices have been proposed, and some demonstrated. Just as for spintronics, a key issue for magnonics is the large power required to control/write information (conventionally achieved through magnetic fields applied by strip lines, or by spin transfer from large spin-polarized currents). Here we show that in BiFeO3, a room-temperature magnetoelectric material, the spin wave frequency (>600 GHz) can be tuned electrically by over 30%, in a non-volatile way and with virtually no power dissipation. Theoretical calculations indicate that this effect originates from a linear magnetoelectric effect related to spin-orbit coupling induced by the applied electric field. We argue that these properties make BiFeO3 a promising medium for spin wave generation, conversion and control in future magnonics architectures.

Upon entering the coexistence region between superconducting (SC) and spin-density-wave (SDW) orders, the effective pairing energy scale is strongly reduced. Our results are interpreted in terms of a competition between SC and SDW orders for electronic state at the Fermi level. Our findings advocate for a strong connection between the SC and SDW gaps anisotropies which are both linked to interband interactions.

Conventional superconductors are characterized by a single energy scale, the superconducting gap, which is proportional to the critical temperature Tc . In hole-doped high-Tc copper oxide superconductors, previous experiments have established the existence of two distinct energy scales for do** levels below the optimal one. The origin and significance of these two scales are largely unexplained, although they have often been viewed as evidence for two gaps, possibly of distinct physical origins. By measuring the temperature dependence of the electronic Raman response of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212) and HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg-1201) crystals with different do** levels, we establish that these two scales are associated with coherent excitations of the superconducting state which disappears at Tc. Using a simple model, we show that these two scales do not require the existence of two gaps. Rather, a single d-wave superconducting gap with a loss of Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectral weight in the antinodal region is shown to reconcile spectroscopic and transport measurements.

They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. The origins of the modes are discussed under Raman and infrared selection rules considerations.

We report Raman scattering spectra of iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. Upon cooling through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition, we observe a large splitting of the E$_g$ in-plane phonon modes involving Fe and As displacements. The splitting of the in-plane phonons at the transition is strongly reduced upon do** and disappears for $x=0.06$ qualitatively following the trend displayed by the Fe magnetic moment. The origin of the splitting is discussed in terms of magnetic frustration inherent to iron-pnictide systems and we argue that such enhanced splitting may be linked to strong spin-phonon coupling.
