Abstract:
The recently revised small-$x$ helicity evolution, resumming the double-logarithmic factor, $α_s\ln^2(1/x)$, allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken $x$, corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. The recently revised small-$x$ helicity evolution, resumming the double-logarithmic factor, $α_s\ln^2(1/x)$, allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken $x$, corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. In this work, we calculate the moderate-$x$ initial conditions in the regime, $α_s \ln^2(1/x)\sim 1$, for the small-$x$ helicity evolution using a light-front valence quark model of the proton, which provides additional physical information about the target. The perturbative emission and absorption of a gluon by the valence quarks are also included. The results, given in Eqs. (35), provide a new set of initial conditions with a significantly reduced number of free parameters than conventional models. Consequently, the predictive power of small-$x$ helicity evolution is expected to improve once the initial conditions from this work are incorporated.

Our calculation uses the standard light-cone perturbation theory method for the partonic content of the virtual photon, together with the Color Glass Condensate description of the target color field. Within the Color Glass Condensate framework, we demonstrate that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus and subnucleon scale fluctuations. Deformation of the nucleus enhances the incoherent cross section in the small $|t|$ region. Subnucleon scale fluctuations increase the incoherent cross section in the large $|t|$ region. In ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs), larger deformation leads to a wider distribution of the minimal impact parameter $B_{min}$ required to produce a UPC. This, together with larger incoherent cross sections for larger deformation, results in smaller extracted radii. Our results demonstrate great potential for future studies of nuclear structure in UPCs and electron-ion collisions.

We apply Bayesian inference to determine the posterior likelihood distribution for the parameters describing the initial condition of the small-$x$ Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution equation at leading logarithmic accuracy. The HERA structure function data is found to constrain most of the model parameters well. In particular, we find that the HERA data prefers an anomalous dimension $γ\approx 1$ unlike in previous fits where $γ>1$ which led to e.g. the unintegrated gluon distribution and the quark-target cross sections not being positive definite. The determined posterior distribution can be used to propagate the uncertainties in the non-perturbative initial condition when calculating any other observable in the Color Glass Condensate framework. We demonstrate this explicitly for the inclusive quark production cross section in proton-proton collisions and by calculating predictions for the nuclear modification factor for the $F_2$ structure function in the EIC and LHeC/FCC-he kinematics.

We focus on Au+Au, U+U, Ru+Ru, Zr+Zr, and Pb+Pb collisions, examining the transverse momentum dependence of vector meson production cross-sections and ${\rm cos(2ΔΦ)}$ asymmetries in the decay product distributions to explore the role of nuclear geometry. The angular modulation is due to the linear polarization of the incoming photons and quantum interference effects. We extract nuclear radii and find them to be consistent with experimental data from the STAR collaboration. The amplitudes of the ${\rm cos(2ΔΦ)}$ modulation in the cross-section and the extracted radii depend on the nuclear geometry. This dependence is dominated by the geometry-dependent variation of the minimum impact parameter required for ultra-peripheral collisions.

We present the first fully consistent calculation of inclusive $π^0$ production at forward rapidities at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8.16$ TeV within the Color Glass Condensate approach. The center-of-mass energy dependence is determined by the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with the initial condition constrained at NLO accuracy by the proton structure function measurements. We find that the LHCb data further constrain this non-perturbative input, and that both the NLO corrections to the evolution equation and to the impact factor have significant effects on the nuclear modification factor $R_{p\mathrm{Pb}}$. The complete NLO calculation is shown to be in qualitative agreement with the LHCb data, and the predictions are found to be sensitive to the details of the applied deep inelastic scattering (DIS) fit. These results demonstrate the need to perform global analyses of DIS and LHC data in order to probe gluon saturation phenomena at precision level at very small momentum fraction $x$.

We present numerical results on diffractive dissociation with large invariant mass diffractive final states in the scattering of an electron off a hadron. The diffractive large-mass resummation is performed using the nonlinear Kovchegov-Levin equation, taking into account running coupling corrections. For the scattering off the proton, a (modified) McLerran-Venugopalan amplitude is used as the initial condition for the nonlinear evolution, with free parameters being constrained by the HERA inclusive data. The results show a reasonable description of the HERA diffractive structure function data at moderately large diffractive mass when the impact parameter profile is constrained by the low-mass diffractive cross section data. The calculation is extended to nuclear scattering, where the initial condition is generalized from the proton case employing the optical Glauber model. The nonlinear large-mass resummation predicts a strong nuclear modification in diffractive scattering off a nuclear target in kinematics accessible at the future Electron-Ion collider.

We use the Kovchegov-Levin equation to resum contributions of large invariant mass diffractive final states to diffractive structure functions in the dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering. For protons we use a (modified) McLerran-Venugopalan model as the initial condition for the evolution, with free parameters obtained from fits to the HERA inclusive data. We obtain an adequate agreement to the HERA diffractive data in the moderately high-mass regimes when the proton density profile is fitted to the diffractive structure function data in the low-mass region. The HERA data is found to prefer a proton shape that is steeper than a Gaussian. The initial conditions are generalized to the nuclear case using the optical Glauber model. Strong nuclear modification effects are predicted in diffractive scattering off a nuclear target in kinematics accessible at the future Electron-Ion collider. In particular, the Kovchegov-Levin evolution has a strong effect on the Q 2 -dependence of the diffractive cross section.

Our calculation for the diffractive structure functions is performed using exact kinematics, under the shockwave approximation of the scattering process. Once the calculation is completed, we show that the previously known behaviour at the high-$Q^2$ and large-$M_X^2$ regime can be extracted from our results by taking the appropriate limits. Furthermore, we discuss the steps required to obtain the complete next-to-leading order results for the structure functions in the color glass condensate (CGC) formalism, and the application of these results to phenomenology.

We present the first fully consistent NLO calculation of the single-inclusive forward hadron production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions under the color glass condensate (CGC) framework. In the dilute-dense limit, the NLO cross-section can be written as a convolution of the NLO impact factor, NLO parton distribution function (PDF), NLO fragmentation function (FF) and dipole-target scattering amplitude which satisfies the NLO small-$x$ Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) evolution. We demonstrate that, without the NLO corrections to the impact factor, we obtain a significant Cronin peak when the dipole amplitude satisfies the NLO BK equation. This would contradict the recent LHCb results. However, the Cronin peak becomes suppressed when the NLO correction to the impact factor is included. This is the main result of this work. The dependence on resummation schemes for the NLO BK evolution will also be discussed.

Measurements of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) provide a powerful tool to probe the fundamental structure of protons and other nuclei. The DIS cross sections can be expressed in terms of structure functions which are conventionally expressed in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs) that obey the DGLAP evolution equations. However, it is also possible to formulate the DGLAP evolution directly in terms of measurable DIS structure functions entirely sidestep** the need for introducing PDFs. We call this as the physical-basis approach. In a global analysis one would thereby directly parametrize the (observable) structure functions -- not the (unobservable) PDFs. Ideally, with data constraints at fixed $Q^2$, the initial condition for the evolution would be the same at each perturbative order (unlike for PDFs) and the approach thus provides a more clean test of the QCD dynamics.
We first study a physical basis consisting of the structure functions $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$ in the fixed-flavour number scheme to the leading non-zero order in $α_s$. We show how to express the quark singlet and gluon PDFs in terms of $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$ directly in momentum space which then leads to the DGLAP evolution of the structure functions $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$. In the second step we expand the physical basis to include six independent structure functions, which allows for a consistent global analysis. The steps towards NLO accuracy and the variable-flavour-number scheme are outlined. At NLO accuracy (when the scheme dependence of PDFs starts to play a part), we can take advatage of the physical basis and express e.g. the Drell-Yan cross sections at the LHC directly in terms of measurable DIS structure functions and thus without the scheme dependence.

The forward scattering amplitude of a small dipole at high energies is given in the mean field approximation by the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) evolution equation. It requires an initial condition $N(r; x_0)$ describing the scattering of a dipole with size $r$ off the target that is probed at momentum fraction $x_0$. Rather than using ad hoc parameterizations tuned to high-energy data at $x\ll x_0$, here we attempt to construct an initial scattering amplitude that is consistent with low-energy, large-$x$ properties of the proton. We start from a non-perturbative three quark light-cone model wave function from the literature. We add ${\cal O}(g)$ corrections due to the emission of a gluon, and ${\cal O}(g^2)$ virtual corrections due to the exchange of a gluon, computed in light-cone perturbation theory with exact kinematics. We provide numerical data as well as analytic parameterizations of the resulting $N(r; x_0)$ for $x_0=0.01 - 0.05$. Solving the BK equation in the leading logarithmic (LL) approximation towards lower $x$, we obtain a fair description of the charm cross section in deeply inelastic scattering measured at HERA by fitting one parameter, the coupling constant $α_s\simeq 0.2$. However, without the option to tune the initial amplitude at $x_0$, the fit of the high precision data results in $χ^2/N_\text{dof} = 2.3$ at $N_\text{dof} =38$, providing clear statistical evidence for the need of systematic improvement e.g. of the photon wave function, evolution equation, and initial condition.

We show within the Color Glass Condensate framework that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus at multiple length scales. Studying $e+$U collisions and varying the deformation of the uranium target, we demonstrate that larger deformations result in enhanced incoherent vector meson production cross sections. Further, different multipole deformation parameters affect different regions of transverse momentum transfer. Employing JIMWLK evolution to study the Bjorken-$x$ dependence of our results, we find that the ratio of incoherent to coherent cross sections decreases with decreasing $x$, largely independently of the quadrupole deformation of the target. Comparing results for the same process using ${\rm {^{20}Ne}}$ targets with ${\rm {^{16}O}}$ targets, we find that differences in deformation are clearly visible in the incoherent cross section. These findings show that certain observables at the Electron-Ion Collider are very sensitive to nuclear structure. Consequently, deformations need to be taken into account when interpreting experimental results. More importantly, this also means that $\vert t\vert$-differential diffractive vector meson production could become a powerful tool, enabling the most direct measurements of nuclear structure at different length scales, ranging from nuclear deformation at low $\vert t\vert$ to nucleon- and subnucleon-size scales at higher $\vert t\vert$.

We demonstrate that when the calculation is performed consistently at next-to-leading order accuracy with massive quarks it becomes possible, for the first time in the dipole picture with perturbatively calculated center-of-mass energy evolution, to simultaneously describe both light and heavy quark production data at small $x_\mathrm{Bj}$. The non-forward eikonal scattering matrix for dipole-proton scattering at high energy obtains an imaginary part due to a $C$-odd three gluon exchange. We present numerical estimates for the perturbative Odderon amplitude as a function of dipole size, impact parameter, their relative azimuthal angle, and light-cone momentum cutoff $x$. The proton is approximated as $ψ_\mathrm{qqq}|qqq\rangle + ψ_\mathrm{qqqg}|qqqg\rangle$, where $ψ_\mathrm{qqq}$ is a non-perturbative three quark model wave function while the gluon emission is computed in light-cone perturbation theory. We find that the Odderon amplitude increases as $x$ decreases from 0.1 to 0.01. At yet lower $x$, the reversal of this energy dependence would reflect the onset of universal small-$x$ renormalization group evolution.

We show that when saturation effects are included one obtains a good description of the exclusive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production spectra in ultra peripheral lead-lead collisions as recently measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. As exclusive spectra are sensitive to the spatial distribution of nuclear matter at small Bjorken-$x$, this implies that gluon saturation effects modify the impact parameter profile of the target as we move towards small $x$. In addition to saturation effects, we find a preference for larger nuclear strong-interaction radii compared to the typical charge radius. We demonstrate the role of finite photon transverse momentum and the interference between the cases for which the role of photon emitter and target are switched between the nuclei. We show that these effects are comparable to the experimental precision for $p_T$-differential cross sections and as such need to be included when comparing to LHC data. Finally, the integrated $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production cross sections from the LHC and preliminary transverse momentum spectra from RHIC are shown to prefer calculations with fluctuating nucleon substructure, although these datasets would require even stronger saturation effects than predicted from our framework.

Exclusive production of transversely polarized heavy vector mesons in deep inelastic scattering at high energy is calculated at next-to-leading order accuracy in the Color Glass Condensate framework. In addition to the first QCD correction proportional to the strong coupling constant $α_s$, we systematically also include the first relativistic correction proportional to the heavy quark velocity squared $v^2$. When combined with our previously published results for longitudinal vector meson production at next-to-leading order accuracy, these results make phenomenological calculations of heavy vector meson production possible at the order $\mathcal{O}(α_s v^0, α_s^0 v^2)$. When applied to $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ and $Υ$ production at HERA and at the LHC, a good agreement between the next-to-leading order calculations and experimental data is found. Additionally, we demonstrate that vector meson production can provide additional constraints compared to structure function analyses when the nonperturbative initial condition for the Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution equation is extracted.

The resulting expression is free of any divergences and suitable for numerical evaluations. The higher-order corrections are found to be numerically important, but they can be mostly captured by the nonperturbative fit parameters describing the initial condition for the small-$x$ evolution of the dipole scattering amplitude. The vector meson production cross section is shown to depend only weakly on the meson distribution amplitude and the factorization scale. We also present phenomenological comparisons of our result to the existing exclusive $φ$ and $ρ$ production data from HERA and find an excellent agreement at high virtualities.

We study experimentally observable signals for nonlinear QCD dynamics in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small Bjorken variable $x$ and moderate virtuality $Q^2$, by quantifying differences between the linear Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution and nonlinear evolution with the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. To remove the effect of the parametrization freedom in the initial conditions of both equations, we first match the predictions for the DIS structure functions $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$ from both frameworks in a region in $x,Q^2$ where both frameworks should provide an accurate description of the relevant physics. The differences in the dynamics are then quantified by the deviations when one moves away from this matching region. For free protons we find that the differences in $F_2$ remain at a few-percent level, while in $F_{\rm L}$ the deviations are larger, up to $10\,\%$ at the EIC and $40\,\%$ at the LHeC kinematics. With a heavy nucleus the differences are up to $10\,\%$ in $F_2$, and can reach $20\,\%$ and $60\,\%$ in $F_{\rm L}$ for the EIC and the LHeC, respectively.

The three point correlation function of color charge densities is evaluated explicitly in light cone gauge for a proton on the light cone. This includes both $C$-conjugation even and odd contributions. We account for perturbative corrections to the three-quark light cone wave function due to the emission of an internal gluon which is not required to be soft. We verify the Ward identity as well as the cancellation of UV divergences in the sum of all diagrams so that the correlator is independent of the renormalization scale. It does, however, exhibit the well known soft and collinear singularities. The expressions derived here provide the $C$-odd contribution to the initial conditions for high-energy evolution of the dipole scattering amplitude to small $x$. Finally, we also present a numerical model estimate of the impact parameter dependence of quantum color charge three-point correlations in the proton at moderately small $x$.

We review and extend the analysis in [1], which compared the results of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) with those obtained using the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. In particular, we include in our comparison the improved TMD (ITMD) framework, which resums kinematic power corrections of the ratio $k_\perp$ over the hard scale $Q_\perp$. By comparing ITMD and CGC results we are able to isolate genuine higher saturation contributions in the ratio $Q_s/Q_\perp$ which are resummed only in the CGC. These saturation contributions are in addition to those in the WeizsäckerWilliams gluon TMD that appear in powers of $Q_s/k_\perp$. We provide numerical estimates of these contributions for inclusive dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider, and identify kinematic windows where they can become relevant in the measurement of dijet and dihadron azimuthal correlations. We argue that such measurements will allow the detailed experimental study of both kinematic power corrections and genuine gluon saturation effects.

Color charge correlators provide fundamental information about the proton structure. In this Letter, we evaluate numerically two-point color charge correlations in a proton on the light cone including the next-to-leading order corrections due to emission or exchange of a perturbative gluon. The non-perturbative valence quark structure of the proton is modelled in a way consistent with high-$x$ proton structure data. Our results show that the correlator exhibits startlingly non-trivial behavior at large momentum transfer or central impact parameters, and that the color charge correlation depends not only on the impact parameter but also on the relative transverse momentum of the two gluon probes and their relative angle. Furthermore, from the two-point color charge correlator, we compute the dipole scattering amplitude. Its azimuthal dependence differs significantly from a impact parameter dependent McLerran-Venugopalan model based on geometry. Our results also provide initial conditions for Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution of the dipole scattering amplitude. These initial conditions depend not only on the impact parameter and dipole size vectors, but also on their relative angle and on the light-cone momentum fraction $x$ in the target.

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and develo** detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions.
This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) total cross section data at small-x as measured by the HERA experiments is well described by Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) evolution in the leading order dipole picture. Recently the full Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) dipole picture total cross sections have become available for DIS, and a working factorization scheme has been devised which subtracts the soft gluon divergence present at NLO. We report our recently published work in which we make the first comparisons of the NLO DIS total cross sections to HERA data. The non-perturbative initial condition to BK evolution is fixed by fitting the HERA reduced cross section data. As the NLO results for the DIS total cross section are currently available only in the massless quark limit, we also fit a light-quark-only cross section constructed with a parametrization of published total and heavy quark data. We find an excellent description of the HERA data. Since the full NLO BK equation is computationally expensive, we use a number of beyond LO prescriptions for the evolution that include most important higher order corrections enhanced by large transverse logarithms, including the recent version of the equation formulated in terms of the target momentum fraction.

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

We perform the first dipole picture fit to HERA inclusive cross section data using the full next-to-leading order (NLO) impact factor combined with an improved Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution including the dominant effects beyond leading logarithmic accuracy at low $x$. We find that three different formulations of the evolution equation that have been proposed in the recent literature result in a very similar description of HERA data, and robust predictions for future deep inelastic scattering experiments. We find evidence pointing towards a significant nonperturbative contribution to the structure function for light quarks, which stresses the need to extend the NLO impact factor calculation to massive quarks.

We calculate finite-$N_\mathrm{c}$ corrections to the next-to-leading order (NLO) Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. We find analytical expressions for the necessary correlators of six Wilson lines in terms of the two-point function using the Gaussian approximation. In a suitable basis, the problem reduces from the diagonalization of a six-by-six matrix to the diagonalization of a three-by-three matrix, which can easily be done analytically. We study numerically the effects of these finite-$N_\mathrm{c}$ corrections on the NLO BK equation. In general, we find that the finite-$N_\mathrm{c}$ corrections are smaller than the expected $1/N_\mathrm{c}^2 \sim 10\%$. The corrections may be large for individual correlators, but have less of an influence on the shape of the amplitude as a function of the dipole size. They have an even smaller effect on the evolution speed as a function of rapidity.

We compute a light front wave function for heavy vector mesons based on long distance matrix elements constrained by decay width analyses in the Non Relativistic QCD framework. Our approach provides a systematic expansion of the wave function in quark velocity. The first relativistic correction included in our calculation is found to be significant, and crucial for a good description of the HERA exclusive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production data. When looking at cross section ratios between nuclear and proton targets, the wave function dependence does not cancel out exactly. In particular the fully non-relativistic limit is found not to be a reliable approximation even in this ratio. The important role of the Melosh rotation to express the rest frame wave function on the light front is illustrated.

Determining the inner structure of protons and nuclei in terms of their fundamental constituents has been one of the main tasks of high energy nuclear and particle physics experiments. This quest started as a map** of the (average) parton densities as a function of longitudinal momentum fraction and resolution scale. Recently, the field has progressed to more differential imaging, where one important development is the description of the event-by-event quantum fluctuations in the wave function of the colliding hadron.
In this Review, recent developments on the extraction of proton and nuclear transverse geometry with event-by-event fluctuations from collider experiments at high energy is presented. The importance of this fundamentally interesting physics in other collider experiments like in studies of the properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma is also illustrated.
