Abstract:
The lower ($H_{c1}$) and upper ($H_{c2}$) critical fields of Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$B$_2$ single crystals (for $x = 0$, 0.1 and $\gtrsim 0.2$) have been deduced from specific heat and local magnetization measurements, respectively. We show that $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ are both decreasing with increasing do** content. The corresponding anisotropy parameter $Γ_{H_{c2}}(0) = H^{ab}_{c2}(0)/H^c_{c2}(0)$…

The corresponding anisotropy parameter $Γ_{H_{c2}}(0) = H^{ab}_{c2}(0)/H^c_{c2}(0)$ value also decreases from $\sim 5$ in pure MgB$_2$ samples down to $\sim 1.5$ for $x \gtrsim 0.2$ whereas $Γ_{H_{c1}}(0)=H^c_{c1}(0)/H^{ab}_{c1}(0)$ remains on the order of 1 in all samples. The small and large gap values have been obtained by fitting the temperature dependence of the zero field electronic contribution to the specific heat to the two gap model for the three Al concentrations. Very similar values have also been obtained by point contact spectroscopy measurements. The evolution of those gaps with Al concentration suggests that both band filling and interband scattering effects are present.

The angular dependence of the upper critical field Hc2 of MgB2 single crystals is studied at various temperatures by means of specific heat and transport measurements in magnetic fields up to 17 T. Clear deviations from Ginzburg-Landau behavior are observed at all temperatures and are explained by two-band effects. The angular- and temperature dependence of the deviations are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on band-structure calculations. Quantitative agreement is obtained with an interband coupling slightly stronger than the calculated, enabling band-structure anisotropies and interband coupling strength to be experimentally estimated. This provides a new pathway to the study of disorder and do** effects in MgB2.

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth ($λ$) and coherence length ($ξ$) has been deduced from Hall probe magnetization measurements in high quality MgB$_2$ single crystals in the two main crystallographic directions. We show that, in contrast to conventional superconductors, MgB$_2$ is characterized by two different anisotropy parameters ($Γ_λ= λ_c/λ_{ab}$ and $Γ_ξ= ξ_{ab}/ξ_c$) which strongly differ at low temperature and merge at $T_c $. These results are in very good agreement with recent calculations in weakly coupled two bands suprerconductors (Phys. Rev. B, 66, 020509(R) (2002).

We report on specific heat, high magnetic field transport and $ac-$susceptibility measurements on magnesium diboride single crystals. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ for magnetic fields perpendicular and parallel to the Mg and B planes is presented for the first time in the entire temperature range. A very different temperature dependence has been observed in the two directions which yields to a temperature dependent anisotropy with $Γ\sim$ 5 at low temperatures and about 2 near $T_c$. A peak effect is observed in susceptibility measurements for $H \sim $2 T parallel to the $c-$axis and the critical current density presnts a sharp maximum for $H$ parallel to the ab-plane.
