The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4$σ$, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters $\sin^2θ_{12}$, $Δm^2_{21}$, and $|Δm^2_{ee}|$ to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. $\sim$17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide $\sim$75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.

We examine the accuracy of an intrinsically one-dimensional quantum electrodynamics to predict accurately the forces and charges of a three-dimensional system that has a high degree of symmetry and therefore depends effectively only on a single coordinate. As a test case we analyze two charged capacitor plates that are infinitely extended along two coordinate directions. Using the lowest-order fine structure correction to the photon propagator we compute the vacuum's induced charge polarization density and show that the force between the charged plates is increased. Although a one-dimensional theory cannot take the transverse character of the virtual (force-mediating) photons into account, nevertheless it predicts, in lowest order of the fine-structure constant, the Coulomb force law between the plates correctly. However, the quantum correction to the classical result is slightly different between the 1d and 3d theories with the polarization charge density induced from the vacuum underestimated by the 1d approach.

This is the preprint version of our paper on Personal and Ubiquitous Computing. There is an increasing interest in creating pervasive games based on emerging interaction technologies. In order to develop touch-less, interactive and augmented reality games on vision-based wearable device, a touch-less motion interaction technology is designed and evaluated in this work. Users interact with the augmented reality games with dynamic hands/feet gestures in front of the camera, which triggers the interaction event to interact with the virtual object in the scene. Three primitive augmented reality games with eleven dynamic gestures are developed based on the proposed touch-less interaction technology as proof. At last, a comparing evaluation is proposed to demonstrate the social acceptability and usability of the touch-less approach, running on a hybrid wearable framework or with Google Glass, as well as workload assessment, user's emotions and satisfaction.

The assistive tool employs a space flight game as the attractive logic part, and microphone arrays as input device, which is getting rid of ambient noise by setting a specific orientation. The therapist can guide the patient to play the game as well as the voice training simultaneously side by side, while not interfere the patient voice. This paper presents a collaborative 3D GIS to support public participation. Realizing that public-involved decision making is often a multi-stage process, the proposed system is designed to provide coherent support for collaborations in the different stages. We differentiate ubiquitous participation and intensive participation, and identify their suitable application stages. The proposed system, then, supports both of the two types of participation by providing synchronous and asynchronous collaboration functionalities. Applying the concept of Digital Earth, the proposed system also features a virtual globe-based user interface. Such an interface integrates a variety of data, functions and services into a unified virtual environment which is delivered to both experts and public participants through the Internet. The system has been designed as a general software framework, and can be tailored for specific projects. In this study, we demonstrate it using a scene modeling case and provide a preliminary evaluation towards its usability.

This paper mainly investigates the circular open dimension problem (CODP), which consists of packing a set of circles of known radii into a strip of fixed width and unlimited length without overlap**. The objective is to minimize the length of the strip. An iterated tabu search approach, named ITS, is proposed. ITS starts from a randomly generated solution and attempts to gain improvements by a tabu search procedure. After that, if the obtained solution is not feasible, a perturbation operator is subsequently employed to reconstruct the incumbent solution and an acceptance criterion is implemented to determine whether or not accept the perturbed solution. This process is repeated until a feasible solution has been found or the allowed computation time has been elapsed. Computational experiments based on well-known benchmark instances show that ITS produces quite competitive results with respect to the best known results. For 18 representative CODP instances taken from the literature, ITS succeeds in improving 13 best known results within reasonable time. In addition, for another challenging related variant: the problem of packing arbitrary sized circles into a circular container, ITS also succeeds in improving many best known results. Supplementary experiments are also provided to analyze the influence of the perturbation operator, as well as the acceptance criterion.

This paper describes a mobile health monitoring system called iCare for the elderly. We use wireless body sensors and smart phones to monitor the wellbeing of the elderly. It can offer remote monitoring for the elderly anytime anywhere and provide tailored services for each person based on their personal health condition. When detecting an emergency, the smart phone will automatically alert pre-assigned people who could be the old people's family and friends, and call the ambulance of the emergency centre. It also acts as the personal health information system and the medical guidance which offers one communication platform and the medical knowledge database so that the family and friends of the served people can cooperate with doctors to take care of him/her. The system also features some unique functions that cater to the living demands of the elderly, including regular reminder, quick alarm, medical guidance, etc. iCare is not only a real-time health monitoring system for the elderly, but also a living assistant which can make their lives more convenient and comfortable.
