Large logarithms that arise in cross sections due to the collinear and soft singularities of QCD are traditionally treated using parton showers or analytic resummation. Parton showers provide a fully-differential description of an event but are challenging to extend beyond leading logarithmic accuracy. On the other hand, resummation calculations can achieve higher logarithmic accuracy but often for only a single observable. Recently, there have been many resummation calculations that jointly resum multiple logarithms. Here we investigate the benefits and limitations of joint resummation in a case study, focussing on the family of $e^+e^-$ event shapes called angularities. We calculate the cross section differential in n angularities at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We investigate whether reweighing a flat phase-space generator to this resummed prediction, or the corresponding distributions from Herwig and Pythia, leads to improved predictions for other angularities. We find an order of magnitude improvement for n = 2 over n = 1, highlighting the benefit of joint resummation, but diminishing returns for larger values of n.

Abstract:
Soft threshold factorization has been used extensively to study hadronic collisions. It is derived in the limit where the momentum fractions $x_{a,b}$ of both incoming partons approach $x_{a,b}\to 1$. We present a generalized threshold factorization theorem for color-singlet processes, which holds in the weaker limit of only $x_a \to 1$ for generic $x_b$ (or vice versa), corresponding to the limit…

Soft threshold factorization has been used extensively to study hadronic collisions. It is derived in the limit where the momentum fractions $x_{a,b}$ of both incoming partons approach $x_{a,b}\to 1$. We present a generalized threshold factorization theorem for color-singlet processes, which holds in the weaker limit of only $x_a \to 1$ for generic $x_b$ (or vice versa), corresponding to the limit of large rapidity but generic invariant mass of the produced color singlet. It encodes the complete soft and/or collinear singular structure in the partonic momentum fractions to all orders in perturbation theory, including in particular flavor-nondiagonal partonic channels at leading power. It provides a more powerful approximation than the classic soft threshold limit, capturing a much larger set of contributions. We demonstrate this explicitly for the Z and Higgs rapidity spectrum to NNLO, and we use it to predict a nontrivial set of its N3LO contributions. Our factorization theorem provides the relevant resummation of large-$x$ logarithms in the rapidity spectrum required for resummation-improved PDF fits. One of our factorization ingredients is a new beam function closely related to the N-jettiness beam function. As a byproduct, we identify the correct soft threshold factorization for rapidity spectra among the differing results in the literature.

Abstract:
We consider Drell-Yan production $pp \to Z/γ^* \to \ell^+\ell^-$ with the simultaneous measurement of the $Z$-boson transverse momentum $q_T$ and $0$-jettiness $\mathcal{T}_0$. Since both observables resolve the initial-state QCD radiation, the double-differential cross section in $q_T$ and $\mathcal{T}_0$ contains Sudakov double logarithms of both $q_T/Q$ and $\mathcal{T}_0/Q$, where…

We consider Drell-Yan production $pp \to Z/γ^* \to \ell^+\ell^-$ with the simultaneous measurement of the $Z$-boson transverse momentum $q_T$ and $0$-jettiness $\mathcal{T}_0$. Since both observables resolve the initial-state QCD radiation, the double-differential cross section in $q_T$ and $\mathcal{T}_0$ contains Sudakov double logarithms of both $q_T/Q$ and $\mathcal{T}_0/Q$, where $Q \sim m_Z$ is the dilepton invariant mass. We simultaneously resum the logarithms in $q_T$ and $\mathcal{T}_0$ to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order (NNLL) matched to next-to-leading fixed order (NLO). Our results provide the first genuinely two-dimensional analytic Sudakov resummation for initial-state radiation. Integrating the resummed double-differential spectrum with an appropriate scale choice over either $\mathcal{T}_0$ or $q_T$ recovers the corresponding single-differential resummation for the remaining variable. We discuss in detail the required effective field theory setups and their combination using two-dimensional resummation profile scales. We also introduce a new method to perform the $q_T$ resummation where the underlying resummation is carried out in impact-parameter space, but is consistently turned off depending on the momentum-space target value for $q_T$. Our methods apply at any order and for any color-singlet production process, such that our results can be systematically extended when the relevant perturbative ingredients become available.

We obtain factorization theorems for various kinematic regimes valid to all orders in the strong coupling, using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory. We discuss how these enable resummation and how to combine regimes. The new ingredients in the factorization theorems are calculated at next-to-leading order, and a range of consistency checks is performed. Our framework goes beyond the current next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (NLL).

No Landau-Yang in QCD

Abstract:
The Landau-Yang theorem, forbidding transition amplitudes between a massive spin-1 particle and two photons, is widely assumed to apply to other massless spin-1 particles. We show that this is not true in Standard-Model QCD, so that for instance antisymmetric colour-octet spin-1 quarkonia can be formed by two on-shell gluons in second-order perturbative QCD.
