We report a neutron scattering study of the ferroelectric phase transition in Sr$_{0.585}$Ce$_{0.025}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ (SBN-61:Ce). We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe anisotropic diffuse scattering. This scattering has inelastic and elastic contributions. In the paraelectric phase the susceptibility associated with the elastic diffuse scattering follows well the anomaly of the dielectric susceptibility of SBN-61:Ce. In the ferroelectric phase the lineshape of the elastic scattering is consistent with the form expected for the ferroelectric domain walls. In contrast to the macroscopic observations, the scattering properties of Ce-doped crystal do not exhibit important changes with respect to those of pure Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$.

Due to this disorder, a complex magnetic phase diagram is expected in the material. In this paper, we report experimental results of magnetic properties in PFT through macroscopic characterization, neutron scattering and Mössbauer spectroscopy techniques. With these results we show for the first time that PbFe$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ behaves very similar to PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, i.e, it undergoes AF transition at 153 K and has a s**lass transition at 10 K, below which the antiferromagnetism coexists with s**lass. We suggest that the mechanism which is responsible for such a non-trivial ground state can be explained by a speromagnet-like spin arrangement similar to the one proposed for PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$.

We report a neutron scattering study of a ferroelectric phase transition in Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ (SBN-61). The ferroelectric polarization is along the crystallographic $c$-axis but the transverse acoustic branch propagating along the $<$1, 1, 0$>$ direction does not show any anomaly associated with the this transition. We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe elastic diffuse scattering. The intensity of this scattering increases as the sample is cooled from a temperature well above the phase transition. The susceptibility associated with this diffuse scattering follows well the anomaly of the dielectric permittivity of SBN-61. Below T$_\mathrm{c}$ the shape of this scattering is consistent with the scattering expected from ferroelectric domain walls. Our results suggest that despite apparent chemical disorder SBN-61 behaves as a classic order-disorder uniaxial ferroelectric with critical fluctuations in the range $<10^{-11}$ s.

A quite unusual diffuse scattering phenomenology was observed in the single-crystal X-ray diffraction pattern of cubic perovskite BMT ($\mathrm{BaMg}_{1/3}\mathrm{Ta}_{2/3}\mathrm{O}_3$). The intensity of the scattering is parametrized as a set of cube-like objects located at the centers of reciprocal space unit cells, resembling very broad and cubic-shaped (1/2,1/2,1/2)-satellites. BMT belongs to perovskites of formula AB$'_{1/3}$B$"_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ (A=Mg, B$'=$Ta, B$"=$Mg). The cubes of the intensity can be attributed to the partial correlations of the occupancies of the B site. The pair correlation function is the Fourier transform of the diffuse scattering intensity and the latter's idealized form yields the unusual property of a power-law correlation decay with distance. Up to now this is observed only in a few exotic instances of magnetic order or nematic crystals. Therefore it cannot be classified as a short-range order phenomenon, as in most situations originating diffuse scattering. A Monte-Carlo search in configuration space yielded solutions that reproduce faithfully the observed diffuse scattering. Analysis of the results in terms of the electrostatic energy and the entropy point to this phase of BMT as a metastable state, kinetically locked, which could be the equilibrium state just below the melting point.

The phonons have been measured and the results are similar to those of other materials with the perovskite structure such as PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN). The acoustic and lowest energy optic branches were measured but it was not possible to measure the branches of higher energy, possibly this is because they largely consist of oxygen motions. High-resolution inelastic measurements also showed that the diffuse scattering was strictly elastic and not directly related to the phonon spectra. A diffuse scattering was observed in BMT near the (H\pm1/2, K\pm1/2, L\pm1/2) points in the Brillouin zone and this had a characteristic cube shape. This arises from ordering of the B-site ions in BMT. Additional experiments revealed a diffuse scattering in BMT similar in shape to Bragg reflections at wave-vectors of the form (H\pm1/3, K\pm1/3, L\pm1/3). Such reflections were also observed by Lufaso [Chem. Matt. 16 (2004) 2148] from powders and suggest that this structure of BMT consists of 4 differently oriented domains of a trigonal structure and results from a different ordering of the B-site ions from that responsible for the scattering at the (H\pm1/2, K\pm1/2, L\pm1/2) points. The results lead us to suggest that for BMT single crystals the bulk has the properties of a cubic perovskite, whereas the surface may have quite different structure from that of the bulk. This difference resembles the behaviour of cubic relaxors like PMN and PMN doped by PbTiO3, where significant surface effects have been reported.

We report measurements of the evolution of the diffuse scattering in a single crystal PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 as a function of hydrostatic pressure. Upon applying pressure the diffuse scattering intensity decreases and is suppressed at about 3 GPa, while no change in the line shape is observed. Similar to the other members of the Pb-based relaxor family like PbMg_1/3Nb_2/3O_3 or PbZn_1/3Nb_2/3O_3 the diffuse scattering in the [H,0,0]/[0,K,0] scattering plane has a butterfly-shape around the (h,0,0) Bragg reflections and is transverse to the scattering vector for (h,h,0) peaks. In the [H,H,0]/[0,0,L] plane the diffuse scattering is elongated along the <1,1,2> directions and is transverse to the scattering vector for (h,h,h) reflections. We find that a model consisting of correlated Pb-displacements along the <1,1,1>-directions reproduces the main features of the diffuse scattering in PbMg_1/3Ta_2/3O_3 adequately when the correlation lengths between the Pb-ion displacement vectors are longest along the <1,1,1> and <1,-1,0> and shortest along <1,1,-2> directions.

Neutron scattering techniques have been used to study the relaxor ferroelectric 0.68PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-0.32PbTiO3 denoted in this paper as 0.68PMN-0.32PT. On cooling, these relaxor ferroelectrics have a long-range ordered ferroelectric phase and the composition is close to that at which the ferroelectric structure changes from rhombohedral to tetragonal. It was found that above the Burns temperature of about 600K, the transverse optic mode and the transverse acoustic mode are strongly coupled and a model was used to describe this coupling that gave similar parameters to those obtained for the coupling in PMN. Below the Burns temperature additional quasi-elastic scattering was found which increased in intensity as the sample was cooled down to the ferroelectric transition temperature but then decreased in intensity. This behaviour is similar to that found in PMN. This scattering is associated with the dynamic polar nano-regions that occur below the Burns temperature. In addition to this scattering a strictly elastic resolution limited peak was observed that was much weaker than the corresponding peak in pure PMN and which decreased in intensity on cooling below the ferroelectric phase whereas for PMN, which does not have a long-range ordered ferroelectric phase, the intensity of this component increased monotonically as the sample was cooled. The results of our study are compared with the recent measurements of Stock et al. [PRB 73 064107] who studied 0.4PMN-0.6PT. The results are qualitatively consistent with the random field model developed to describe the scattering from PMN.

We find a drastic pressure-induced decrease of the lead displacement from the inversion centre which correlates with an increase by $\sim$ 50 % of the anisotropy of the oxygen temperature factor. The vibrations of the Mg/Ta are, in contrast, rather pressure insensitive. We attribute these changes being responsible for the previously reported pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous dielectric permittivity and diffuse scattering in relaxor ferroelectrics.

The transverse acoustic and the lowest transverse optic phonons are strongly coupled and we have obtained a model for this coupling. We observe that the lowest optic branch is always underdamped. A resolution-limited central peak and quasi-elastic scattering appear in the vicinity of the Burns temperature. It is shown that it is unlikely that the quasi-elastic scattering originates from the combined effects of coupling between TA and TO phonons with an increase of the dam** of the TO phonon below T$_d$. The quasi-elastic scattering has a peak as a function of temperature close to the peak in the dielectric constant while the intensity of the central peak scattering increases strongly below this temperature. These results are discussed in terms of a random field model for relaxors.

In addition to acoustic phonons, we observe strong diffuse scattering, which consists of two components. The first one is quasi-static and has a temperature-independent intensity. Whereas the temperature dependence of the lattice parameter of BaMg$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$ follows the classical expectations, the lattice parameter of relaxor ferroelectric PbMg$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$ exhibits anomalies. One of these anomalies is observed in the same temperature range as the peak in the dielectric susceptibility. We find that in PbMg$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$, lead ions are displaced from the ideal positions in the perovskite structure at all temperatures. Consequently short-range order is present. This induces strong diffuse scattering with an anisotropic shape in wavevector space. The temperature dependences of the diffuse neutron scattering intensity and of the amplitude of the lead displacements are similar.

The presence of a relaxation mode associated with quasi-elastic scattering in PMN indicates that order-disorder behaviour plays an important rôle in the dynamics of diffuse phase transitions.
