We introduce a discrete mathematical model for the mechanical behaviour of a planar slice of human corneal tissue, in equilibrium under the action of physiological intraocular pressure (IOP). The model considers a regular (two-dimensional) network of structural elements mimicking a discrete number of parallel collagen lamellae connected by proteoglycan-based chemical bonds (crosslinks). Since the thickness of each collagen lamella is small compared to the overall corneal thickness, we upscale the discrete force balance into a continuum system of partial differential equations and deduce the corresponding macroscopic stress tensor and strain energy function for the micro-structured corneal tissue. We demonstrate that, for physiological values of the IOP, the predictions of the discrete model converge to those of the continuum model. We use the continuum model to simulate the progression of the degenerative disease known as keratoconus, characterized by a localized bulging of the corneal shell. We assign a spatial distribution of damage (i. e., reduction of the stiffness) to the mechanical properties of the structural elements and predict the resulting macroscopic shape of the cornea, showing that a large reduction in the element stiffness results in substantial corneal thinning and a significant increase in the curvature of both the anterior and posterior surfaces.

We introduce a mathematical model for the mechanical behaviour of the eukaryotic cell cytoskeleton. This discrete model involves a regular array of pre-stressed protein filaments that exhibit resistance to enthalpic stretching, joined at crosslinks to form a network. Assuming that the inter-crosslink distance is much shorter than the lengthscale of the cell, we upscale the discrete force balance to form a continuum system of governing equations and deduce the corresponding macroscopic stress tensor. We use these discrete and continuum models to analyse the imposed displacement of a bead placed in the domain, characterising the cell rheology through the force-displacement curve. We further derive an analytical approximation to the stress and strain fields in the limit of small bead radius, predicting the net force required to generate a given deformation and elucidating the dependency on the microscale properties of the filaments. We apply these models to networks of the intermediate filament vimentin and demonstrate good agreement between predictions of the discrete, continuum and analytical approaches. In particular, our model predicts that the network stiffness increases sublinearly with the filament pre-stress and scales logarithmically with the bead size.

The formation of bulk metallic glass requires the constituent elements to have a negative heat of mixing but has no restrictions on its magnitude. An understanding of this issue is lacking due to the absence of a valid method for describing chemical ordering of metallic glasses. For example, the radial distribution function is ineffective in identifying the elemental preferences of packed atoms. Here, we show that using molecular-dynamics simulation, the chemical medium-range ordering of liquid alloys can be evaluated from persistent homology. This inherently arising chemical medium-range order in metallic glasses is exclusively regulated by the activation and inhibition of the constituent components, making the topology of metallic glasses a Turing pattern. The connecting schemes of atoms of the same species form three distinct regions, reflecting different correlations at the short and medium length scales, while the difference in the schemes corresponds to chemical ordering. By changing the elemental types, it is demonstrated that the chemical medium-range order strongly depends on the relative depth of the interatomic-potential wells. The study separates metallic glasses from crystals under the condition of negative heat of mixing by emphasizing their fundamental difference in interatomic potentials.

Synthetic data used for scene text detection and recognition tasks have proven effective. However, there are still two problems: First, the color schemes used for text coloring in the existing methods are relatively fixed color key-value pairs learned from real datasets. The dirty data in real datasets may cause the problem that the colors of text and background are too similar to be distinguished from each other. Second, the generated texts are uniformly limited to the same depth of a picture, while there are special cases in the real world that text may appear across depths. To address these problems, in this paper we design a novel method to generate color schemes, which are consistent with the characteristics of human eyes to observe things. The advantages of our method are as follows: (1) overcomes the color confusion problem between text and background caused by dirty data; (2) the texts generated are allowed to appear in most locations of any image, even across depths; (3) avoids analyzing the depth of background, such that the performance of our method exceeds the state-of-the-art methods; (4) the speed of generating images is fast, nearly one picture generated per three milliseconds. The effectiveness of our method is verified on several public datasets.
