Traditionally, compiler researchers either conduct experiments within an existing production compiler or develop their own prototype compiler; both options come with trade-offs. On one hand, prototy** in a production compiler can be cumbersome, as they are often optimized for program compilation speed at the expense of software simplicity and development speed. On the other hand, the transition from a prototype compiler to production requires significant engineering work. To bridge this gap, we introduce the concept of sidekick compiler frameworks, an approach that uses multiple frameworks that interoperate with each other by leveraging textual interchange formats and declarative descriptions of abstractions. Each such compiler framework is specialized for specific use cases, such as performance or prototy**. Abstractions are by design shared across frameworks, simplifying the transition from prototy** to production. We demonstrate this idea with xDSL, a sidekick for MLIR focused on prototy** and teaching. xDSL interoperates with MLIR through a shared textual IR and the exchange of IRs through an IR Definition Language. The benefits of sidekick compiler frameworks are evaluated by showing on three use cases how xDSL impacts their development: teaching, DSL compilation, and rewrite system prototy**. We also investigate the trade-offs that xDSL offers, and demonstrate how we simplify the transition between frameworks using the IRDL dialect. With sidekick compilation, we envision a future in which engineers minimize the cost of development by choosing a framework built for their immediate needs, and later transitioning to production with minimal overhead.

In healthcare, the ability to care for oneself is reflected in the "Activities of Daily Living (ADL)," which serve as a measure of functional ability (functioning). A lack of functioning may lead to poor living conditions requiring personal care and assistance. To accurately identify those in need of support, assistance programs continuously evaluate participants' functioning across various domains. However, the assessment process may encounter consistency issues when multiple assessors with varying levels of expertise are involved. Novice assessors, in particular, may lack the necessary preparation for real-world interactions with participants. To address this issue, we developed a dialogue system that simulates interactions between assessors and individuals of varying functioning in a natural and reproducible way. The dialogue system consists of two major modules, one for natural language understanding (NLU) and one for natural language generation (NLG), respectively. In order to generate responses consistent with the underlying knowledge base, the dialogue system requires both an understanding of the user's query and of biographical details of an individual being simulated. To fulfill this requirement, we experimented with query classification and generated responses based on those biographical details using some recently released InstructGPT-like models.

The relation between CVs and network measures is not well understood and its derivation typically requires detailed knowledge of both the dynamical system and the network topology. In this work, we present a data-driven method for algorithmically learning and understanding CVs for binary-state spreading processes on networks of arbitrary topology. We demonstrate our method using four example networks: the stochastic block model, a ring-shaped graph, a random regular graph, and a scale-free network generated by the Albert-Barabási model. Our results deliver evidence for the existence of low-dimensional CVs even in cases that are not yet understood theoretically.

The dynamics are projected onto low-dimensional collective variables given by the shares of each discrete state in the system, or in certain subsystems, and general conditions for the convergence of the collective variable dynamics to a mean-field ordinary differential equation are proved. We discuss the convergence to this mean-field limit for a continuous-time noisy version of the so-called ``voter model'' on Erdős-Rényi random graphs, on the stochastic block model, and on random regular graphs. Extracting information about dynamical systems from models learned off simulation data has become an increasingly important research topic in the natural and engineering sciences. Modeling the Koopman operator semigroup has played a central role in this context. As the approximation quality of any such model critically depends on the basis set, recent work has focused on deriving data-efficient representations of the Koopman operator in low-rank tensor formats, enabling the use of powerful model classes while avoiding over-fitting. On the other hand, detailed information about the system at hand can be extracted from models for the infinitesimal generator, also called Kolmogorov backward operator for stochastic differential equations. In this work, we present a data-driven method to efficiently approximate the generator using the tensor train (TT) format. The centerpiece of the method is a TT representation of the tensor of generator evaluations at all data sites. We analyze consistency and complexity of the method, present extensions to practically relevant settings, and demonstrate its applicability to benchmark numerical examples.

Many problems in science and engineering require an efficient numerical approximation of integrals or solutions to differential equations. For systems with rapidly changing dynamics, an equidistant discretization is often inadvisable as it either results in prohibitively large errors or computational effort. To this end, adaptive schemes, such as solvers based on Runge--Kutta pairs, have been developed which adapt the step size based on local error estimations at each step. While the classical schemes apply very generally and are highly efficient on regular systems, they can behave sub-optimal when an inefficient step rejection mechanism is triggered by structurally complex systems such as chaotic systems. To overcome these issues, we propose a method to tailor numerical schemes to the problem class at hand. This is achieved by combining simple, classical quadrature rules or ODE solvers with data-driven time-step** controllers. Compared with learning solution operators to ODEs directly, it generalises better to unseen initial data as our approach employs classical numerical schemes as base methods. At the same time it can make use of identified structures of a problem class and, therefore, outperforms state-of-the-art adaptive schemes. Several examples demonstrate superior efficiency. Source code is available at https://github.com/lueckem/quadrature-ML.

We present numerical simulations as well as experimental results concerning transitions between Taylor vortices and spiral vortices in the Taylor-Couette system with rigid, non-rotating end-walls in axial direction. As in the axial periodic case, these transitions are performed by wavy structures appearing via a secondary bifurcation out of Taylor vortices and spirals, respectively. But in the presence of rigid lids, pure spiral solutions do not occur but are substituted by primary bifurcating, stable wavy spiral structures (wSPI). Similarly to the periodic system, we found a transition from Taylor vortices to wSPI mediated by so called wavy Taylor vortices (wTVF) and, on the other hand, a transition from wSPI to TVF triggered by a propagating defect. We furthermore observed and investigated the primary bifurcation of wSPI out of basic Ekman flow.

We investigate theoretically the nonlinear state of ideal straight rolls in the Rayleigh-Bénard system of a fluid layer heated from below with a porous medium using a Galerkin method. Applying the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation, binary mixtures with positive separation ratio are studied and compared to one-component fluids. Our results for the structural properties of roll convection resemble qualitatively the situation in the Rayleigh--Bénard system without porous medium except for the fact that the streamlines of binary mixtures are deformed in the so-called Soret regime. The deformation of the streamlines is explained by means of the Darcy equation which is used to describe the transport of momentum. In addition to the properties of the rolls, their stability against arbitrary infinitesimal perturbations is investigated. We compute stability balloons for the pure fluid case as well as for a wide parameter range of Lewis numbers and separation ratios which are typical for binary gas and fluid mixtures. The stability regions of rolls are found to be restricted by a crossroll, a zigzag and a new type of oscillatory instability mechanism, which can be related to the crossroll mechanism.

A novel flow state consisting of two oppositely travelling waves (TWs) with oscillating amplitudes has been found in the counterrotating Taylor-Couette system by full numerical simulations. This structure bifurcates out of axially standing waves that are nonlinear superpositions of left and right handed spiral vortex waves with equal time-independent amplitudes. Beyond a critical driving the two spiral TW modes start to oscillate in counterphase due to a Hopf bifurcation. The trigger for this bifurcation is provided by a nonlinearly excited mode of different symmetry than the spiral TWs. A three-mode coupled amplitude equation model is presented that captures this bifurcation scenario. The mode-coupling between two symmetry degenerate critical modes and a nonlinearly excited one that is contained in the model can be expected to occur in other structure forming systems as well.

The full, time dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a combination of a finite difference and a Galerkin method for a fixed axial periodicity length of the vortex patterns and for a finite system of aspect ratio 12 with rigid nonrotating ends in a setup with radius ratio eta=0.5. Differences in structure, dynamics, symmetry properties, bifurcation and stability behavior between spiral vortices with azimuthal wave numbers M=+-1 and M=0 Taylor vortices are elucidated and compared in quantitative detail. This causes a nonequilibrium situation. Therein the magnetization M and the internal magnetic field H are constant in time and homogeneous within the ferrofluid. According to the Maxwell equations they are related to each other via H = H_0 - M/2. However, H and M are not parallel to each other and their directions differ from that of the applied field H_0. We have analyzed several different theoretical models that provide equations for the magnetization in such a situation. The magnetization M is determined for each model as a function of Ωand H_0 in a wide range of frequencies and fields. Comparisons are made of the different model results and the differences in particular of the predictions for the perpendicular components H_y =-M_y/2 of the fields are analyzed.

A finite-difference method is used to solve the full hydrodynamic field equations in a vertical cross section of the layer perpendicular to the convection roll axes. Results are presented for ethanol-water parameters with several strongly negative separation ratios where TW solutions bifurcate subcritically. Oscillatory solution branches of the hydrodynamic field equations describing convection in the form of a standing wave (SW) in binary fluid mixtures heated from below are determined completely for several negative Soret coefficients. Galerkin as well as finite-difference simulations were used. They were augmented by simple control methods to obtain also unstable SW states. For sufficiently negative Soret coefficients unstable SWs bifurcate subcritically out of the quiescent conductive state. They become stable via a saddle-node bifurcation when lateral phase pinning is exerted. Eventually their invariance under time-shift by half a period combined with reflexion at midheight of the fluid layer gets broken. Thereafter they terminate by undergoing a period-doubling cascade into chaos.

The influence of an axial through-flow on the spatiotemporal growth behavior of different vortex structures in the Taylor-Couette system with radius ratio eta=0.5 is determined. The Navier Stokes equations (NSE) linearized around the basic Couette-Poiseuille flow are solved numerically with a shooting method in a wide range of through-flow strengths Re and different rates of co- and counterrotating cylinders for toroidally closed vortices with azimuthal wave number m=0 and for spiral vortex flow with m=+1 and m=-1. For each of these three different vortex varieties we have investigated (i) axially extended vortex structures, (ii) axially localized vortex pulses, and (iii) vortex fronts. The complex dispersion relations of the linearized NSE for vortex modes with the three different m are evaluated for real axial wave numbers for (i) and over the plane of complex axial wave numbers for (ii,iii). We have also determined the Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation (GLE) approximation in order to analyze its predictions for the vortex stuctures (ii,iii). Critical bifurcation thresholds for extended vortex structures are evaluated. The boundaries between absolute and convective instability of the basic state for vortex pulses are determined with a saddle-point analysis of the dispersion relations. Finally, the linearly selected front behavior of growing vortex structures is investigated. For the two front intensity profiles (increasing in positive or negative axial direction) we have determined front velocities, axial growth rates, and the wave numbers and frequencies of the unfolding vortex patterns with azimuthal wave numbers m=0, +1, -1, respectively.

Spatially confined solutions of traveling convection rolls are determined numerically for binary mixtures like ethanol-water. The appropriate field equations are solved in a vertical crossection of the rolls perpendicular to their axes subject to realistic horizontal boundary conditions. The localized convective states are stably and robustly sustained by strongly nonlinear mixing and complex flow-induced concentration redistribution. We elucidate how this enables their existence for strongly negative separation ratios at small subcritical heating rates below the saddle-node of extended traveling convection rolls where the quiescent fluid is strongly stable.

A minimal, analytically manageable Galerkin type model for convection in binary mixtures subject to realistic boundary conditions is presented. The model elucidates and reproduces the typical bifurcation topology of extended stationary and oscillatory convective states seen for negative Soret coupling: backwards stationary and Hopf bifurcations, saddle node bifurcations to stable strongly nonlinear stationary and traveling wave (TW) states, and merging of the TW solution branch with stationary states. Also unstable standing wave solutions are obtained. A systematic analysis of the concentration balance for liquid mixture parameters has lead to a representation of the concentration field in terms of two linear and two nonlinear modes. This truncation captures the important large--scale effects in the laterally averaged concentration field resulting from advective and diffusive mixing. Also the fact that with increasing flow intensity along the TW solution branch the frequency decreases monotonically in the same way as the mixing increases --- the variance of the concentration distribution decreases --- is ensured and reproduced well. Universal scaling relations between flow intensity, frequency, and variance of the concentration distribution (degree of mixing) in a TW are predicted by the model and have been confirmed by numerical solutions of the full equations. The validity of the model is checked by comparison with numerical solutions of the full field equations.

Convection in horizontal layers of binary fluids heated from below and in particular the influence of the Soret effect on the bifurcation properties of extended stationary and traveling patterns that occur for negative Soret coupling is investigated theoretically. The fixed points corresponding to these two convection structures are determined for realistic boundary conditions with a many mode Galerkin scheme for temperature and concentration and an accurate one mode truncation of the velocity field. This solution procedure yields the stable and unstable solutions for all stationary and traveling patterns so that complete phase diagrams for the different convection types in typical binary liquid mixtures can easily be computed. Also the transition from weakly to strongly nonlinear states can be analyzed in detail. An investigation of the concentration current and of the relevance of its constituents shows the way for a simplification of the mode representation of temperature and concentration field as well as for an analytically manageable few mode description.

The effect of thermally generated bulk stochastic forces on the statistical growth dynamics of forwards bifurcating propagating macroscopic patterns is compared with the influence of fluctuations at the boundary of a semiinfinite system, $0<x$. To that end the linear complex Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation with additive stochastic forcing is solved by a spatial Laplace transformation in the presence of arbitrary boundary conditions for the fluctuations of the pattern amplitude at $x=0$. A situation where the latter are advected with an imposed through-flow from an outside upstream part towards the inlet boundary at $x=0$ is investigated in more detail. The spatiotemporal growth behavior in the convectively unstable regime is compared with recent work by Swift, Babcock, and Hohenberg [Physica A 204, 625 (1994)] where a special boundary condition is imposed.

The bifurcation behavior and the significantly different spatiotemporal properties of the different wave states - e.g. frequency, flow structure, and concentration distribution - are determined and related to each other and to a convenient measure of their nonlinearity. This allows to derive a limit for the applicability of small amplitude expansions. Additionally an universal scaling behavior of frequencies and mixing properties is found.

A unique pattern selection in the absolutely unstable regime of driven, nonlinear, open-flow systems is reviewed. It has recently been found in numerical simulations of propagating vortex structures occuring in Taylor-Couette and Rayleigh-Benard systems subject to an externally imposed through-flow. Unlike the stationary patterns in systems without through-flow the spatiotemporal structures of propagating vortices are independent of parameter history, initial conditions, and system length. They do, however, depend on the boundary conditions in addition to the driving rate and the through-flow rate. Our analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation elucidates how the pattern selection can be described by a nonlinear eigenvalue problem with the frequency being the eigenvalue. Nonlinear, spatially localized structures of traveling convection rolls are investigated in quantitative detail as a function of Rayleigh number for two different Soret coupling strengths (separation ratios) with Lewis and Prandtl numbers characterizing ethanol-water mixtures. A finite-difference method was used to solve the full hydrodynamic field equations numerically. Structure and dynamics of these localized traveling waves (LTW) are dominated by the concentration field. Like in the spatially extended convective states ( cf. accompanying paper), the Soret-induced concentration variations strongly influence, via density changes, the buoyancy forces that drive convection. The spatio-temporal properties of this feed-back mechanism, involving boundary layers and concentration plumes, show that LTW's are strongly nonlinear states. Light intensity distributions are determined that can be observed in side-view shadowgraphs. Detailed analyses of all fields are made using colour-coded isoplots, among others. In the frame comoving with their drift velocity, LTW's display a nontrivial spatio-temporal symmetry consisting of time-translation by half an oscillation period combined with vertical reflection through the horizontal midplane of the layer. A time-averaged concentration current is driven by a phase difference between the waves of concentration and vertical velocity in the bulk of the LTW state. The associated large-scale concentration redistribution stabilizes the LTW and controls its drift velocity into the quiescent fluid by generating a buoyancy-reducing concentration "barrier" ahead of the leading LTW front. The selection of the width of the LTW's is investigated and comparisons with experiments are presented.

Nonlinear convection structures are investigated in quantitative detail as a function of Rayleigh number for several negative and positive Soret coupling strengths (separation ratios) and different Lewis and Prandtl numbers characterizing different mixtures. A finite difference method was used to solve the full hydrodynamic field equations in a range of experimentally accessible parameters. We elucidate the important role that the concentration field plays in the nonlinear states of stationary overturning convection (SOC) and of traveling wave (TW) convection. Structural differences in the concentration boundary layers and of the concentration plumes in TW's and SOC's and their physical consequences are discussed. These properties show that the states con- sidered here are indeed strongly nonlinear, as expected from the magnitude of advection and diffusion in the concentration balance. The bifurcation behaviour of the states is analysed using different order parameters such as flow intensity, Nusselt number, a newly defined mixing parameter characterized by the variance of the concentration field, and the TW frequency. For further comparison with experiments, light intensity distributions are determined that can be observed in side-view shadowgraphs. Structural analyses of all fields are made using colour coded isoplots, vertical and lateral field profiles, and lateral Fourier decompositions. Transport properties of TWs are also discussed, in particular the mean lateral concentration current that is caused by the phase difference between concentration wave and velocity wave and that is roughly proportional to the TW frequency. This current plays an important role in the structural dynamics and stability of spatially-localized traveling-wave convection (cf. accompanying paper).
