Connectedness and integrally closed local overrings of two-dimensional regular local rings
Abstract: Let $D$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring. We prove there is a one-to-one correspondence between closed connected sets in the space of valuation overrings of $D$ that dominate $D$ and the integrally closed local overrings of $D$ that are not essential valuation rings or divisorial valuation rings of $D$.

A connectedness theorem for spaces of valuation rings
Abstract: Let $F$ be a field, let $D$ be a local subring of $F$, and let Val$_F(D)$ be the space of valuation rings of $F$ that dominate $D$. We lift Zariski's connectedness theorem for fibers of a projective morphism to the Zariski-Riemann space of valuation rings of $F$ by proving that a subring $R$ of $F$ dominating $D$ is local, residually algebraic over $D$ and integrally closed in $F$ if and only if t… ▽ More

Non-integrally closed Kronecker function rings and integral domains with a unique minimal overring
Abstract: It is well-known that an integrally closed domain $D$ can be express as the intersection of its valuation overrings but, if $D$ is not a Prüfer domain, the most of valuation overrings of $D$ cannot be seen as localizations of $D$. The Kronecker function ring of $D$ is a classical construction of a Prüfer domain which is an overring of $D[t]$, and its localizations at prime ideals are of the form… ▽ More

On the integral domains characterized by a Bezout Property on intersections of principal ideals
Abstract: In this article we study two classes of integral domains. The first is characterized by having a finite intersection of principal ideals being finitely generated only when it is principal. The second class consists of the integral domains in which a finite intersection of principal ideals is always non-finitely generated except in the case of containment of one of the principal ideals in all the o… ▽ More

The tree of quadratic transforms of a regular local ring of dimension two
Abstract: Let $D$ be a 2-dimensional regular local ring and let $Q(D)$ denote the quadratic tree of 2-dimensional regular local overrings of $D$. We explore the topology of the tree $Q(D)$ and the family ${\mathcal{R}}(D)$ of rings obtained as intersections of rings in $Q(D)$. If $A$ is a finite intersection of rings in $ Q(D)$, then $A$ is Noetherian and the structure of $A$ is well understood. However, ot… ▽ More

An infinite cardinal-valued Krull dimension for rings
Abstract: We define and study two generalizations of the Krull dimension for rings, which can assume cardinal number values of arbitrary size. The first, which we call the "cardinal Krull dimension," is the supremum of the cardinalities of chains of prime ideals in the ring. The second, which we call the "strong cardinal Krull dimension," is a slight strengthening of the first. Our main objective is to addr… ▽ More

Ideal theory of infinite directed unions of local quadratic transforms
Abstract: Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension at least 2. Associated to each valuation domain birationally dominating $R$, there exists a unique sequence $\{R_n\}$ of local quadratic transforms of $R$ along this valuation domain. We consider the situation where the sequence $\{ R_n \}_{n \ge 0}$ is infinite, and examine ideal-theoretic properties of the integrally closed local domain… ▽ More

The constructible topology on spaces of valuation domains
Abstract: We consider properties and applications of a compact, Hausdorff topology called the "ultrafilter topology" defined on an {\sl arbitrary spectral space} and we observe that this topology coincides with the constructible topology. If $K$ is a field and $A$ a subring of $K$, we show that the space Zar$(K|A)$ of all valuation domains, having $K$ as quotient field and containing $A$, (endowed with the… ▽ More

Cancellation properties in ideal systems: A classification of $\boldsymbol{e.a.b.}$ semistar operations
Abstract: We give a classification of {\texttt{e.a.b.}} semistar (and star) operations by defining four different (successively smaller) distinguished classes. Then, using a standard notion of equivalence of semistar (and star) operations to partition the collection of all {\texttt{e.a.b.}} semistar (or star) operations, we show that there is exactly one operation of finite type in each equivalence class… ▽ More

The patch topology and the ultrafilter topology on the prime spectrum of a commutative ring
Abstract: Let R be a commutative ring and let Spec(R) denote the collection of prime ideals of R. We define a topology on Spec(R) by using ultrafilters and demonstrate that this topology is identical to the well known patch or constructible topology. The proof is accomplished by use of a von Neumann regular ring canonically associated with $R$.

A generalization of Kronecker function rings and Nagata rings
Abstract: Despite the obvious similarities in definitions and properties, the Nagata ring and the Kronecker function ring have been classically treated independently, when the coefficients are not in a Prüfer domain. The purpose of this paper is to study two different unified approaches to the Nagata rings and the Kronecker function rings, which yield these rings and their classical generalizations as spe… ▽ More

The content of a Gaussian polynomial is invertible
Abstract: Let R be an integral domain and let f(X) be a nonzero polynomial in R[X]. The content of f is the ideal c(f) generated by the coefficients of f. The polynomial f(X) is called Gaussian if c(fg)=c(f)c(g) for all g(X) in R[X]. It is well known that if c(f) is an invertible ideal, then f is Gaussian. In this note we prove the converse.

Nagata Rings, Kronecker Function Rings and Related Semistar Operations
Abstract: In 1994, Matsuda and Okabe introduced the notion of semistar operation. This concept extends the classical concept of star operation (cf. for instance, Gilmer's book \cite{G}) and, hence, the related classical theory of ideal systems based on the works by W. Krull, E. Noether, H. Prüfer and P. Lorenzen from 1930's. In \cite{FL1} and \cite{FL2} the current authors investigated properties of the K… ▽ More
