Triggered by the fact that, in the hydrodynamic limit, several different kinetic equations of physical interest all lead to the same Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, we develop in the paper an abstract framework which allows to explain this phenomenon. The method we develop can be seen as a significant improvement of known approaches for which we fully exploit some structural assumptions on the linear and nonlinear collision operators as well as a good knowledge of the Cauchy theory for the limiting equation. {In particular, we fully exploit the fact that the collision operator is preserving both momentum and kinetic energy.} We adopt a perturbative framework in a Hilbert space setting and first develop a general and fine spectral analysis of the linearized operator and its associated semigroup. Then, we introduce a splitting adapted to the various regimes (kinetic, acoustic, hydrodynamic) present in the kinetic equation which allows, by a fixed point argument, to construct a solution to the kinetic equation and prove the convergence towards suitable solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. Our approach is robust enough to treat, in the same formalism, the case of the Boltzmann equation with hard and moderately soft potentials, with and without cut-off assumptions, as well as the Landau equation for hard and moderately soft potentials in presence of a spectral gap. New well-posedness and strong convergence results are obtained within this framework. In particular, for initial data with algebraic decay with respect to the velocity variable, our approach provides the first result concerning the strong Navier-Stokes limit from Boltzmann equation without Grad cut-off assumption or Landau equation. The method developed in the paper is also robust enough to apply, at least at the linear level, to quantum kinetic equations for Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein particles.

We prove uniqueness of self-similar profiles for the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately hard potentials, that is with collision kernel of the form | $\bullet$ | $γ$ for $γ$ > 0 small enough (explicitly quantified). Our result provides the first uniqueness statement for self-similar profiles of inelastic Boltzmann models allowing for strong inelasticity besides the explicitly solvable case of Maxwell interactions (corresponding to $γ$ = 0). Our approach relies on a perturbation argument from the corresponding Maxwell model through a careful study of the associated linearised operator. In particular, a part of the paper is devoted to the trend to equilibrium for the Maxwell model in suitable weighted Sobolev spaces, an extension of results which are known to hold in weaker topologies. Our results can be seen as a first step towards a full proof, in the one-dimensional setting, of a conjecture in Ernst \& Brito (2002) regarding the determination of the long-time behaviour of solutions to inelastic Boltzmann equation.

We show in particular that if $N_{0}$ is the maximal integer $s \geq0$ such that $$\frac{1}{σ(\cdot)}\int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}k(\cdot,v)σ^{-s}(v)m(\mathrm{d} v) \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$$ then, for initial datum $f$ such that $\mathrm{d} s\int_{\mathbb{T}^{d}\times \mathbb{R}^{d}}|f(x,v)|σ^{-N_{0}}(v)\mathrm{d} x m(\mathrm{d} v) <\infty$ it holds $$\left\|\mathcal{V}(t)f-\varrho_{f}Ψ\right\|_{L^{1}}=\dfrac{ε_{f}(t)}{(1+t)^{N_{0}-1}}, \qquad \varrho_{f}:= \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}f(x,v)m(\mathrm{d} v)$$ where $Ψ$ is the unique invariant density of $\left(\mathcal{V}(t)\right)_{t \geq0}$ and $\lim_{t\to\infty}ε_{f}(t)=0$. We in particular provide a new criteria of the existence of invariant density. The proof relies on the explicit computation of the time decay of each term of the Dyson-Phillips expansion of $\mathcal{V}(t)$ and on suitable smoothness and integrability properties of the trace on the imaginary axis of Laplace transform of remainders of large order of this Dyson-Phillips expansion. Our construction resorts also on collective compactness arguments and provides various technical results of independent interest. Finally, as a by-product of our analysis, we derive essentially sharp ``subgeometric'' convergence rate for Markov semigroups associated to general transition kernels.

In this paper, we give an overview of the results established in [3] which provides the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres in 3D. In particular, we obtain a new system of hydrodynamic equations describing granular flows and prove existence of classical solutions to the aforementioned system. One of the main issue is to identify the correct relation between the restitution coefficient (which quantifies the rate of energy loss at the microscopic level) and the Knudsen number which allows us to obtain non trivial hydrodynamic behavior. In such a regime, we construct strong solutions to the inelastic Boltzmann equation, near thermal equilibrium whose role is played by the so-called homogeneous cooling state. We prove then the uniform exponential stability with respect to the Knudsen number of such solutions, using a spectral analysis of the linearized problem combined with technical a priori nonlinear estimates. Finally, we prove that such solutions converge, in a specific weak sense, towards some hydrodynamic limit that depends on time and space variables only through macroscopic quantities that satisfy a suitable modification of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system.

In this paper, we consider the long time behaviour of collisionless kinetic equation with stochastic diffuse boundary operators for velocities bounded away from zero. We show that under suitable reasonable conditions, the semigroup is eventually compact. In particular, without any irreducibility assumption, the semigroup converges exponentially to the spectral projection associated to the zero eigenvalue as $t \to \infty.$ This contrasts drastically to the case allowing arbitrarily slow velocities for which the absence of a spectral gap yields at most algebraic rate of convergence to equilibrium. Some open questions are also mentioned.

Uniform in time estimates for statistical moments, $L^{p}$-norm generation and Sobolev regularity are shown using a combination of techniques that include recent developments concerning level set analysis in the spirit of De Giorgi and refined entropy-entropy dissipation functional inequalities for the Landau collision operator which are extended to the case in question here. As a consequence of the analysis, we prove algebraic relaxation of non degenerate distributions towards the Fermi-Dirac statistics under a weak non saturation condition for the initial datum. All quantitative estimates are uniform with respect to the quantum parameter. They therefore also hold for the classical limit, that is the Landau equation.

We obtain an (almost) optimal algebraic rate of convergence to equilibrium under very general assumptions on the initial datum and the boundary operator. The rate is prescribed by the maximal gain of integrability that the boundary operator is able to induce. The proof relies on a representation of the collisionless transport semigroups by a (kind of) Dyson-Phillips series and on a fine analysis of the trace on the imaginary axis of Laplace transform of remainders (of large order) of this series. In this paper, we provide the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres with small inelasticity. The hydrodynamic system that we obtain is an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with self-consistent forcing terms and is thus the first hydrodynamic system that properly describes rapid granular flows. To do that, we write our Boltzmann equation in nondimensional form introducing the dimensionless Knudsen number which is intended to tend to 0. The difficulties are then manyfold, the first one coming from the fact that the original Boltzmann equation is free-cooling and thus requires a self-similar change of variables to work with an equation that has an homogeneous steady state. The latter is not explicit and is heavy-tailed, which is a major obstacle to adapt energy estimates and spectral analysis. One of the main challenges here is to understand the relation between the restitution coefficient (which quantifies the loss of energy at the microscopic level) and the Knudsen number. This is done identifying the correct nearly elastic regime to capture nontrivial hydrodynamic behavior. We are then able to prove exponential stability uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number of the solution of our rescaled Boltzmann equation in a close to equilibrium regime. Finally, we prove that our solution to the Boltzmann equation converges in some very specific weak sense towards some hydrodynamic solution which depends on time and space variables only through macroscopic quantities. Such macroscopic quantities are solutions to a suitable modification of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system which appears to be new in this context.

We first establish the well-posedness of the particle system which exhibits no conserved quantities. For bounded collision kernels, this shows in particular that propagation of chaos holds true. We add to this model the possibility of annihilation (ideal Rayleigh gas with annihilation), requiring that each obstacle is either annihilating or elastic, which determines whether the tagged particle is elastically reflected or removed from the system. We provide a rigorous derivation of a linear Boltzmann equation with annihilation from this particle model in the Boltzmann-Grad limit. Moreover, we give explicit estimates for the error in the kinetic limit by estimating the contributions of the configurations which prevent the Markovianity. Under very general conditions, such equations are governed by stochastic $C_{0}$-semigroups $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ on $% L^{1}(Ω\times V,\d x \otimes \bm{m}(\d v)).$ We give a general criterion of irreducibility of $% \left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ and we show that, under very natural assumptions, if an invariant density exists then $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ converges strongly (not simply in Cesarò means) to its ergodic projection. We show also that if no invariant density exists then $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ is \emph{swee**} in the sense that, for any density $\varphi $, the total mass of $ U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\varphi $ concentrates near suitable sets of zero measure as $ t\rightarrow +\infty .$ We show also a general weak compactness theorem of interest for the existence of invariant densities. Such model describes a system of ballistic hard spheres that, at the moment of interaction, either annihilate with probability $α$ $\in$ (0, 1) or collide elastically with probability 1 -- $α$. Such equation is highly dissipative in the sense that all observables, hence solutions, vanish as time progresses. Following a contribution , by two of the authors, considering well posedness of the steady self-similar profile in the regime of small annihilation rate $α$ $\ll$ 1, we prove here that such self-similar profile is the intermediate asymptotic attractor to the annihilation dynamics with explicit universal algebraic rate. In this work we present several quantitative results of convergence to equilibrium for the linear Boltzmann operator with soft potentials under Grad's angular cutoff assumption. This is done by an adaptation of the famous entropy method and its variants, resulting in explicit algebraic, or even stretched exponential, rates of convergence to equilibrium under appropriate assumptions. The novelty in our approach is that it involves functional inequalities relating the entropy to its production rate, which have independent applications to equations with mixed linear and non-linear terms. We also briefly discuss some properties of the equation in the non-cutoff case and conjecture what we believe to be the right rate of convergence in that case.

We investigate the large time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous linear Boltzmann equation from a semigroup viewpoint. Our analysis is performed in some (weighted) $L^{1}$-spaces. We deal with both the cases of hard and soft potentials (with angular cut-off). For hard potentials, we provide a new proof of the fact that, in weighted $L^{1}$-spaces with exponential or algebraic weights, the solutions converge exponentially fast towards equilibrium. Our approach uses weak-compactness arguments combined with recent results of the second author on positive semigroups in $L^{1}$-spaces. For soft potentials, in $L^{1}$-spaces, we exploits the convergence to ergodic projection for perturbed substochastic semigroup to show that, for very general initial datum, solutions to the linear Boltzmann equation converges to equilibrium in large time. Moreover, for a large class of initial data, we also prove that the convergence rate is at least algebraic. Notice that, for soft potentials, no exponential rate of convergence is expected because of the absence of spectral gap.

In this work we investigate the rate of convergence to equilibrium for subcritical solutions to the Becker-Döring equations with physically relevant coagulation and fragmentation coefficients and mild assumptions on the given initial data. Using a discrete version of the log-Sobolev inequality with weights we show that in the case where the coagulation coefficient grows linearly and the detailed balance coefficients are of typical form, one can obtain a linear functional inequality for the dissipation of the relative free energy. This results in showing Cercignani's conjecture for the Becker-Döring equations and consequently in an exponential rate of convergence to equilibrium. We also show that for all other typical cases one can obtain an 'almost' Cercignani's conjecture that results in an algebraic rate of convergence to equilibrium. Additionally, we show that if one assumes an exponential moment condition one can recover Jabin and Niethammer's rate of decay to equilibrium, i.e. an exponential to some fractional power of $t$.

We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove that the solution to the associated initial-value problem converges exponentially fast towards the unique equilibrium solution. The proof combines a careful spectral analysis of the linearised semigroup as well as entropy estimates. The trend towards equilibrium holds in the weakly inelastic regime in which $α$ is close to $1$, and the rate of convergence is explicit and depends solely on the spectral gap of the \emph{elastic} linearised collision operator.

This manuscript investigates the following aspects of the one dimensional dissipative Boltzmann equation associated to variable hard-spheres kernel: (1) we show the optimal cooling rate of the model by a careful study of the system satisfied by the solution's moments, (2) give existence and uniqueness of measure solutions, and (3) prove the existence of a non-trivial self-similar profile, i.e. homogeneous cooling state, after appropriate scaling of the equation. The latter issue is based on compactness tools in the set of Borel measures. More specifically, we apply a dynamical fixed point theorem on a suitable stable set, for the model dynamics, of Borel measures.

Information Geometry generalizes to infinite dimension by modeling the tangent space of the relevant manifold of probability densities with exponential Orlicz spaces. We review here several properties of the exponential manifold on a suitable set $\mathcal E$ of mutually absolutely continuous densities. We study in particular the fine properties of the Kullback-Liebler divergence in this context. We also show that this setting is well-suited for the study of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation if $\mathcal E$ is a set of positive densities with finite relative entropy with respect to the Maxwell density. More precisely, we analyse the Boltzmann operator in the geometric setting from the point of its Maxwell's weak form as a composition of elementary operations in the exponential manifold, namely tensor product, conditioning, marginalization and we prove in a geometric way the basic facts i.e., the H-theorem. We also illustrate the robustness of our method by discussing, besides the Kullback-Leibler divergence, also the property of Hyvärinen divergence. This requires to generalise our approach to Orlicz-Sobolev spaces to include derivatives.%

We prove a linear inequality between the entropy and entropy dissipation functionals for the linear Boltzmann operator (with a Maxwellian equilibrium background). This provides a positive answer to the analogue of Cercignani's conjecture for this linear collision operator. Our result covers the physically relevant case of hard-spheres interactions as well as Maxwellian kernels, both with and without a cut-off assumption. For Maxwellian kernels, the proof of the inequality is surprisingly simple and relies on a general estimate of the entropy of the gain operator due to Matthes and Toscani (2012) and Villani (1998). For more general kernels, the proof relies on a comparison principle. Finally, we also show that in the grazing collision limit our results allow to recover known logarithmic Sobolev inequalities.

It is known that in this case an extension of $\T_H$ generates a substochastic (i.e. positive contraction) $C_0$-semigroup $(V_H(t))_{t\geq 0}$. We show here that $(V_H(t))_{t\geq 0}$ is the smallest substochastic $C_0$-semigroup with the above mentioned property and provides a representation of $(V_H(t))_{t \geq 0}$ as the sum of an expansion series similar to Dyson-Phillips series. We develop an honesty theory for such boundary perturbations that allows to consider the honesty of trajectories on subintervals $J \subseteq [0,\infty)$. New necessary and sufficient conditions for a trajectory to be honest are given in terms of the aforementioned series expansion.

We prove that any subcritical solution to the Becker-Döring equations converges exponentially fast to the unique steady state with same mass. Our convergence result is quantitative and we show that the rate of exponential decay is governed by the spectral gap for the linearized equation, for which several bounds are provided. This improves the known convergence result by Jabin & Niethammer (see ref. [14]). Our approach is based on a careful spectral analysis of the linearized Becker-Döring equation (which is new to our knowledge) in both a Hilbert setting and in certain weighted $\ell^1$ spaces. This spectral analysis is then combined with uniform exponential moment bounds of solutions in order to obtain a convergence result for the nonlinear equation.

We adopt a strategy which is novel in several aspects, in particular, the study of regularity does not requires a priori knowledge of the time-dependent problem. Furthermore, the uniqueness result is obtained in the small thermalization regime by studying the so-called quasi-elastic limit for the problem. An important new aspect lies in the fact that no entropy functional inequality is needed in the limiting process.

We prove uniqueness of the stationary solution (with given mass) in the weakly inelastic regime; i.e., for any inelasticity parameter $α\in (α_0,1)$, with some constructive $α_0 \in [0, 1)$. Our analysis is based on a perturbative argument which uses the knowledge of the stationary solution in the elastic limit and quantitative estimates of the convergence of stationary solutions as the inelasticity parameter goes to 1. In order to achieve this we give an accurate spectral analysis of the associated linearized collision operator in the elastic limit. Several qualitative properties of this unique steady state $F_α$ are also derived; in particular, we prove that $F_α$ is bounded from above and from below by two explicit universal (i.e. independent of $α$) Maxwellian distributions.

For the simplified model of Maxwell molecules first, we give a complete spectral analysis, and deduce from it the optimal rate of exponential convergence to equilibrium. Moreover we show the convergence to the heat equation in the diffusive limit and compute explicitely the diffusivity. Then for the physical model of hard spheres we use a suitable entropy functional for which we prove explicit inequality between the relative entropy and the production of entropy to get exponential convergence to equilibrium with explicit rate. The proof is based on inequalities between the entropy production functional for hard spheres and Maxwell molecules. Mathematical proof of the convergence to some heat equation in the diffusive limit is also given.
