First search for the weak radiative decays $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ$

Abstract: We present the first search for the weak radiative decays $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ$ using a data sample of 980~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. There are no evident $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ γ$ or $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 γ$ signals. Abstract: We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance an… ▽ More We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays reported by Belle II. △ Less

The results are based on a data sample that contains $772\times10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The measured overall branching fraction and the direct $CP$ asymmetry are $(5.38\pm0.40\pm0.35)\times 10^{-6}$ and $-0.170\pm0.073\pm0.017$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. △ Less

The $Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} $ candidates are reconstructed via their decay to $Λ_{c}^{+} π^{\mp}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ decays to $pK^{-}π^{+},~pK_{S}^{0},$ and $Λπ^{+}$ final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0} π^{+} \bar{p}) = (1.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.07)\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++} π^{-} \bar{p}) = (1.84\pm 0.11 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}$, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the $M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{\pm}}$ spectrum with a significance of $4.2σ$ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited $Λ_{c}^{+}$ and is tentatively named $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$. Its mass and width are measured to be $(2913.8 \pm 5.6 \pm 3.8)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $(51.8\pm20.0 \pm 18.8)$ MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times{\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}) = (9.5 \pm 3.6 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c} (2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times {\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}) = (1.24 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$. Abstract: We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, where $\ell^+\ell^- = μ^+μ^-$ or $e^+e^-$, using electron-positron collisions recorded at an energy at or near the $Υ(4S)$ mass and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The data was collected during 2019--2021 by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-en… ▽ More We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, where $\ell^+\ell^- = μ^+μ^-$ or $e^+e^-$, using electron-positron collisions recorded at an energy at or near the $Υ(4S)$ mass and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The data was collected during 2019--2021 by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. We reconstruct $K^{\ast}(892)$ candidates in the $K^+π^-$, $K_{S}^{0}π^+$, and $K^+π^0$ final states. The signal yields with statistical uncertainties are $22\pm 6$, $18 \pm 6$, and $38 \pm 9$ for the decays $B \to K^{\ast}(892)μ^+μ^-$, $B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-$, and $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$, respectively. We measure the branching fractions of these decays for the entire range of the dilepton mass, excluding the very low mass region to suppress the $B \to K^{\ast}(892)γ(\to e^+e^-)$ background and regions compatible with decays of charmonium resonances, to be \begin{equation} {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)μ^+μ^-) = (1.19 \pm 0.31 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-) = (1.42 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-) = (1.25 \pm 0.30 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, \end{equation} where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The $\sin^2θ_W$ precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average, but at the centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Measurements of the couplings for muons, charm, and $b$-quarks will be substantially improved and the existing $3σ$ discrepancy between the SLC $A_{LR}$ and LEP $A_{FB}^b$ measurements will be addressed. Precision measurements of neutral current universality will be more than an order of magnitude more precise than currently available. As the energy scale is well away from the $Z^0$-pole, the precision measurements will have sensitivity to the presence of a parity-violating dark sector gauge boson, $Z_{\rm dark}$. The program also enables the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ form factor of the $τ$ to be made at an unprecedented level of precision. A precision of $10^{-5}$ level is accessible with 40~ab$^{-1}$ and with more data it would start to approach the $10^{-6}$ level. This technique would provide the most precise information from the third generation about potential new physics explanations of the muon $g-2$ $4σ$ anomaly. Additional $τ$ and QCD physics programs enabled or enhanced with having polarized electron beams are also discussed in this White Paper. Our results for the ratios of branching fractions are $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}) = (11.32 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.26)\%$, $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}) = (1.68 \pm 0.11\pm 0.03)\%$, and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}) = (17.13 \pm 0.62 \pm 0.51)\%$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The second value corresponds to $(5.83\pm 0.42)\times\tan^4θ_C$, where $θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle; this value is larger than other measured ratios of branching fractions for a doubly Cabibbo-suppressed charm decay to a Cabibbo-favored decay. Multiplying these results by world average values for $B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0})$ and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})$ yields $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})= (7.08\pm 0.08\pm 0.16\pm 0.20)\times10^{-3}$, $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})= (1.05\pm 0.07\pm 0.02\pm 0.03)\times10^{-3}$, and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}) = (9.44\pm 0.34\pm 0.28\pm 0.32)\times10^{-3}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the normalization mode. SuperKEKB is already the world's highest-luminosity collider. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak luminosity of $\rm 6.3 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ by further increasing the beam currents and reducing the beam-size at the interaction point by squeezing the betatron function down to $β^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.3~mm$. Beam backgrounds are a key challenge in this context. We estimate the expected background evolution in the next ten years and discuss potential challenges and background mitigation strategies. We find that backgrounds will remain high but acceptable until a luminosity of at least $\rm 2.8\times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ is reached at $β^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.6~mm$. Beyond this luminosity, predictions are highly uncertain, owing to a planned redesign of the interaction region. Improved background estimates with reduced uncertainties for the final, maximum-luminosity operation will require completion of this redesign. △ Less

Abstract: We search for a light Higgs boson ($A^0$) decaying into a $τ^+τ^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$ pair in the radiative decays of $Υ(1S)$. The production of $Υ(1S)$ mesons is tagged by $Υ(2S)\to π^+ π^- Υ(1S)$ transitions, using 158 million $Υ(2S)$ events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. We set the upper limits at 90\% credibility level (C.L.) on the product branching fractions for $Υ(1S)\to γA^0$ and $A^0\to τ^+τ^-$ varying from $3.8\times10^{-6}$ to $1.5\times10^{-4}$. Our results represent an approximately twofold improvement on the current world best upper limits for the $Υ(1S)\to γA^0(\to τ^+τ^-)$ production. For $A^0\to μ^+μ^-$, the upper limits on the product branching fractions for $Υ(1S)\to γA^0$ and $A^0\to μ^+μ^-$ are at the same level as the world average limits, and vary from $3.1\times10^{-7}$ to $1.6\times10^{-5}$. The branching fraction ratios ${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+)$ and ${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ)/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+)$ are measured to be $1.98 \pm0.13~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.08~({\rm syst.})$ and $ 1.94 \pm 0.18~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.10~({\rm syst.})$, respectively. Abstract: We report results from a search for the decay $B_s^0\rightarrowηη$ using 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The measurements of $\mathcal{B}$ are the most precise to date and are in good agreement with previous results, as is the measurement of ${\cal A}_{CP}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+})$. Taking the decay $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- \pip$ as the normalization mode, we measure the branching fraction ratio ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.229\pm0.008\pm0.012$ with improved precision, and measure the branching fraction ratios ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.038\pm0.006\pm0.004$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.123\pm0.007\pm0.010$ for the first time. Taking into account the branching fraction of the normalization mode, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0) = (3.27\pm0.11\pm0.17\pm0.73) \times 10^{-3}$, ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0) = (0.54\pm 0.09\pm 0.06\pm 0.12) \times 10^{-3}$, and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-) = (1.76\pm 0.10\pm0.14\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-3}$. Study of $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}h^{-} (h=K/π)$ decays at Belle

Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fractions of the Cabibbo favored $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}$ and the Cabibbo suppressed $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-}$ decays. The ratio of branching fractions of $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-}$ and $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}$ is measured to be $R^{D} = [8.19 \pm 0.20(\rm stat) \pm 0.23(\rm syst)] \times 10^{-2} $. Application of recoil-imaging time projection chambers to directional neutron background measurements in the SuperKEKB accelerator tunnel

Abstract: Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO$_2$ gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunne… ▽ More Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO$_2$ gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunnel regions surrounding the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. With the use of 3D recoil tracking, we show that these TPCs are capable of maintaining nearly $100\%$ nuclear recoil purity to reconstructed ionization energies ($E_\text{reco}$) as low as 5 $\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}$. Using a large sample of simulated $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O recoil tracks, we find consistency between predicted and measured recoil energy spectra in five of the six TPCs, providing useful validation of the neutron production mechanisms modeled in simulation. Restricting this sample to $^4$He recoil tracks with $E_\text{reco}>40$ $\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}$, we demonstrate axial angular resolutions within $8^{\circ}$ and we introduce a procedure that under suitable conditions, correctly assigns the vector direction to $91\%$ of simulated $^4$He recoils. Applying this procedure to assign vector directions to measured $^4$He recoil tracks, we observe consistency between the angular distributions of observed and simulated recoils, providing first experimental evidence of localized neutron "hotspots" in the accelerator tunnel. Observed rates of nuclear recoils in these TPCs suggest that simulation overestimates the neutron flux from these hotspots. △ Less

Abstract: We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle $ φ_{3} $ (also known as~$γ$) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of \linebreak $B^+\to D\left(K_{S}^{0}h^{+}h^{-}\right)h^+$, where $D$ is either a $D^0$ or $\bar{D}{}^0$ meson and $h$ is either a $π$ or $K$. Abstract: This paper reports a study of $B \to K^{*}γ$ decays using $62.8\pm 0.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected during 2019--2020 by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider, corresponding to $(68.2 \pm 0.8) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression variable, dipion masses, and angular distributions of the resulting samples, to determine a signal yield of $104\pm16$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = [20.6 \pm 3.2(\rm stat) \pm 4.0(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, and $f_L(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = 0.936 ^{+0.049}_{-0.041}(\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$. This first Belle II $B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0$ angular analysis yields results compatible with previous determinations, and indicates Belle II performance superior to early Belle results. △ Less

We use a sample of collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $ΔE$ and $M_{\rm bc}$ distributions of the resulting samples are fit to determine signal yields of approximately 690, 840, and 380 decays for the channels $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, $B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+$, and $B^0 \to K^+π^-π^0$, respectively. These yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = [35.8 \pm 1.6(\rm stat) \pm 1.4 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+) = [67.0 \pm 3.3 (\rm stat)\pm 2.3 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^+π^-π^0) = [38.1 \pm 3.5 (\rm stat)\pm 3.9 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = -0.103 \pm 0.042(\rm stat) \pm 0.020 (\rm syst)$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+) = -0.010 \pm 0.050 (\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^0 \to K^+π^-π^0) = 0.207 \pm 0.088 (\rm stat)\pm 0.011(\rm syst)$. In order to identify and reconstruct the $X_c$ system, we reconstruct one of the two $B$-mesons using machine learning techniques in fully hadronic decay modes. The moments are measured with progressively increasing threshold selections on $q^2$ starting with a lower value of 3.0 $\mathrm{GeV}^2$ in steps of 0.5 $\mathrm{GeV}^2$ up to a value of 10.0 $\mathrm{GeV}^2$. The measured moments are further unfolded, correcting for reconstruction and selection effects as well as QED final state radiation. We report the moments separately for electron and muon final states and observe no lepton flavor universality violating effects. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first observation of the processes $e^+e^-\toΥ(\rm 1S,2S)η$ at $\sqrt{s}=10.866$~GeV with a $10.2σ$ and $16.5σ$ significance respectively. The measured Born cross sections are $σ(e^+e^- \to Υ(2S)η)=2.07 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.19$~pb, and $σ(e^+e^- \to Υ(\rm 1S)η)=0.42 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.04$~pb. Search for the Decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$

Abstract: We report the results of the first search for the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ using $121.4~\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We observe no significant signal and set a 90\% confidence-level upper limit of %$7.1 \times 10^{-5}$ $6.5 \times 10^{-5}$ on the branching fraction of this decay. We report the results of the first search for the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ using $121.4~\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The color-suppressed decay $D^{0}\toφη$ is observed for the first time, with very high significance. The results for the $CP$ asymmetries are \begin{eqnarray} A_{CP}(D^{0}\toπ^{+}π^{-}η) & = & [0.9\pm 1.2\,({\rm stat})\pm 0.5\,({\rm syst})]\%\,, \nonumber \\ A_{CP}(D^{0}\to K^{+}K^{-}η) & = & [-1.4\pm 3.3\,({\rm stat})\pm 1.1\,({\rm syst})]\%\,, \nonumber \\ A_{CP}(D^{0}\toφη)&= & [-1.9\pm 4.4\,({\rm stat})\pm 0.6\,({\rm syst})]\%\,. \nonumber \end{eqnarray} The results for $D^{0}\toπ^{+}π^{-}η$ are a significant improvement over previous results. The branching fraction and $A_{CP}$ results for $D^{0}\to K^{+}K^{-}η$, and the $A_{CP}$ result for $D^{0}\toφη$, are the first such measurements.
