A Holographic c-Theorem for Schrodinger Spacetimes
Abstract: We prove a c-theorem for holographic renormalization group flows in a Schrodinger spacetime that demonstrates that the effective radius L(r) monotonically decreases from the UV to the IR, where r is the bulk radial coordinate. This result assumes that the bulk matter satisfies the null energy condition, but holds regardless of the value of the critical exponent z. We also construct several numeric… ▽ More

Universal features of Lifshitz Green's functions from holography
Abstract: We examine the behavior of the retarded Green's function in theories with Lifshitz scaling symmetry, both through dual gravitational models and a direct field theory approach. In contrast with the case of a relativistic CFT, where the Green's function is fixed (up to normalization) by symmetry, the generic Lifshitz Green's function can a priori depend on an arbitrary function $\mathcal G(\hatω)$,… ▽ More

High-Temperature Expansion of Supersymmetric Partition Functions
Abstract: Di Pietro and Komargodski have recently demonstrated a four-dimensional counterpart of Cardy's formula, which gives the leading high-temperature ($β\rightarrow{0}$) behavior of supersymmetric partition functions $Z^{SUSY}(β)$. Focusing on superconformal theories, we elaborate on the subleading contributions to their formula when applied to free chiral and U(1) vector multiplets. In particular, we… ▽ More

Central charges from the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superconformal index
Abstract: We present prescriptions for obtaining the central charges, $a$ and $c$, of a four dimensional superconformal quantum field theory from the superconformal index. At infinite $N$, for holographic theories dual to Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds the prescriptions give the $\mathcal{O}(1)$ parts of the central charges. This allows us, among other things, to show the exact AdS/CFT matching of $a$ and $c$… ▽ More

One-loop Structure of Higher Rank Wilson Loops in AdS/CFT
Abstract: The half-supersymmetric Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM is arguably the central non-local operator in the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the field theory side, the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops in arbitrary representations of $SU(N)$ are captured to all orders in perturbation theory by a Gaussian matrix model. Chain Inflation via Rapid Tunneling in the Landscape
Abstract: Chain inflation takes place in the string theory landscape as the universe tunnels rapidly through a series of ever lower energy vacua such as may be characterized by quantized changes in four form fluxes. The string landscape may be well suited to an early period of rapid tunneling, as required by chain inflation, followed by a later period of slow tunneling, such as may be required to explain… ▽ More

Angular dependence of the melting of the porous vortex matter in $\mathrm{Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}}$
Abstract: The behavior of vortex matter in $\mathrm{Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}}$ in the presence of a low concentration of tilted columnar defects (CDs) was studied using magneto-optical measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. We find that while the dynamic properties are significantly affected by tilting the field away from CDs, the thermodynamic lines are angle independent. Our simulations revea… ▽ More

All 1/2 BPS solutions of IIB supergravity with SO(4) x SO(4) isometry
Abstract: In hep-th/0409174, Lin, Lunin and Maldacena constructed a set of regular 1/2 BPS geometries in IIB theory. These remarkable `bubbling AdS' geometries have a natural interpretation as duals of chiral primary operators with weight Delta=J in N=4 super-Yang Mills theory. Although these geometries have been assumed to be complete, from a purely supergravity point of view, additional 1/2 BPS configur… ▽ More

Gauged supergravity from type IIB string theory on Y^{p,q} manifolds
Abstract: We first construct a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction ansatz for type IIB theory compactified on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds Y^{p,q} with Freund-Rubin 5-form flux giving rise to minimal N=2 gauged supergravity in five dimensions. We then investigate the R-charged black hole solution in this gauged supergravity, and in particular study its thermodynamics. Based on the gauge theory/string theory co… ▽ More

Map** the G-structures and supersymmetric vacua of five-dimensional N=4 supergravity
Abstract: We classify the supersymmetric vacua of N=4, d=5 supergravity in terms of G-structures. We identify three classes of solutions: with R^3, SU(2) and generic SO(4) structure. Using the Killing spinor equations, we fully characterize the first two classes and partially solve the latter. With the N=4 graviton multiplet decomposed in terms of N=2 multiplets: the graviton, vector and gravitino multipl… ▽ More

Finite Heisenbeg Groups and Seiberg Dualities in Quiver Gauge Theories
Abstract: A large class of quiver gauge theories admits the action of finite Heisenberg groups of the form Heis(Z_q x Z_q). This Heisenberg group is generated by a manifest Z_q shift symmetry acting on the quiver along with a second Z_q rephasing (clock) generator acting on the links of the quiver. Under Seiberg duality, however, the action of the shift generator is no longer manifest, as the dualized nod… ▽ More

Central Extensions of Finite Heisenberg Groups in Cascading Quiver Gauge Theories
Abstract: Many conformal quiver gauge theories admit nonconformal generalizations. These generalizations change the rank of some of the gauge groups in a consistent way, inducing a running in the gauge couplings. We find a group of discrete transformation that acts on a large class of these theories. These transformations form a central extension of the Heisenberg group, generalizing the Heisenberg group… ▽ More

Finite Heisenberg Groups in Quiver Gauge Theories
Abstract: We show by direct construction that a large class of quiver gauge theories admits actions of finite Heisenberg groups. We consider various quiver gauge theories that arise as AdS/CFT duals of orbifolds of C^3, the conifold and its orbifolds and some orbifolds of the cone over Y(p,q). Matching the gauge theory analysis with string theory on the corresponding spaces implies that the operators coun… ▽ More

Spinning strings in AdS_5 x S^5: A worldsheet perspective
Abstract: We examine the leading Regge string states relevant for semi-classical spinning string solutions. Using elementary RNS techniques, quadratic terms in an effective lagrangian are constructed which describe massive NSNS strings in a space-time with five-form flux. We then examine the specific case of AdS_5 x S^5, finding the dependence of AdS "energy" (E_0) on spin in AdS (S), spin on the sphere (… ▽ More

Devaluation: a dynamical mechanism for a naturally small cosmological constant
Abstract: We propose a natural solution to the cosmological constant problem consistent with the standard cosmology and successful over a broad range of energies. This solution is based on the existence of a new field, the devaluton, with its potential modeled on a tilted cosine. After inflation, the universe reheats and populates the devaluton's many minima. As the universe cools, domain walls form betwe… ▽ More
