Ignoring ten-dimensional heterotic gauge fields, heterotic supergravity reduced on a $d$-dimensional torus gives rise to a half-maximal supergravity coupled to $d$ vector multiplets. The reduced theory has a continuous $O(d,d;\mathbb R)/O(d)_-\times O(d)_+$ symmetry that persists to all perturbative orders in the string $α'$ expansion. We highlight this symmetry by explicitly reducing the bosonic sector of four-derivative heterotic supergravity as well as its fermionic supersymmetry variations. After appropriate field redefinitions, the resulting action and supersymmetry variations are manifestly $O(d)_-\times O(d)_+$ invariant. This reduction allows us to explore the interplay between the gravity and vector multiplets beyond leading order, where (in our conventions) $O(d)_-$ is the supergravity R-symmetry while $O(d)_+$ is a flavor symmetry of the $d$ vector multiplets.

Accurate patient diagnoses based on human tissue biopsies are hindered by current clinical practice, where pathologists assess only a limited number of thin 2D tissue slices sectioned from 3D volumetric tissue. Recent advances in non-destructive 3D pathology, such as open-top light-sheet microscopy, enable comprehensive imaging of spatially heterogeneous tissue morphologies, offering the feasibility to improve diagnostic determinations. A potential early route towards clinical adoption for 3D pathology is to rely on pathologists for final diagnosis based on viewing familiar 2D H&E-like image sections from the 3D datasets. However, manual examination of the massive 3D pathology datasets is infeasible. To address this, we present CARP3D, a deep learning triage approach that automatically identifies the highest-risk 2D slices within 3D volumetric biopsy, enabling time-efficient review by pathologists. For a given slice in the biopsy, we estimate its risk by performing attention-based aggregation of 2D patches within each slice, followed by pooling of the neighboring slices to compute a context-aware 2.5D risk score. For prostate cancer risk stratification, CARP3D achieves an area under the curve (AUC) of 90.4% for triaging slices, outperforming methods relying on independent analysis of 2D sections (AUC=81.3%). These results suggest that integrating additional depth context enhances the model's discriminative capabilities. In conclusion, CARP3D has the potential to improve pathologist diagnosis via accurate triage of high-risk slices within large-volume 3D pathology datasets.

RowHammer stands out as a prominent example, potentially the pioneering one, showcasing how a failure mechanism at the circuit level can give rise to a significant and pervasive security vulnerability within systems. Prior research has approached RowHammer attacks within a static threat model framework. Nonetheless, it warrants consideration within a more nuanced and dynamic model. This paper presents a low-overhead DRAM RowHammer vulnerability profiling technique termed DRAM-Profiler, which utilizes innovative test vectors for categorizing memory cells into distinct security levels. The proposed test vectors intentionally weaken the spatial correlation between the aggressors and victim rows before an attack for evaluation, thus aiding designers in mitigating RowHammer vulnerabilities in the map** phase. While there has been no previous research showcasing the impact of such profiling to our knowledge, our study methodically assesses 128 commercial DDR4 DRAM products. The results uncover the significant variability among chips from different manufacturers in the type and quantity of RowHammer attacks that can be exploited by adversaries.

In particular, we consider flows within the same dimension and holographically reprove the $c$-, $F$-, and $a$-theorems in dimensions two, three, and four. We focus on the family of maximally spherical entangling surfaces, define a quasi-constant of motion corresponding to the breaking of conformal invariance, and use a properly defined distance between minimal surfaces to construct a holographic $c$-function that is monotonic along the flow. We then apply our method to the case of flows across dimensions: There, we reprove the monotonicity of flows from $\mathrm{AdS}_{D+1}$ to $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ and prove the novel case of flows from $\mathrm{AdS}_5$ to $\mathrm{AdS}_4$.

We derive this expansion directly in supergravity from the class of half-BPS solutions due to Lin, Lunin, and Maldacena in type IIB supergravity. The moduli space of these configurations can be quantized using covariant quantization methods. We review how this quantization leads to the graviton index, ${\cal I}_\infty(q)$, and present a modification that leads to the precise expression for the expansion in terms of giant gravitons. Our proposal provides a derivation of the giant graviton expansion directly in terms of supergravity degrees of freedom. We also comment on how to derive the expansion in terms of the effective Fermi droplet picture.

The dual six-dimensional RG flow is disconnected from Lorentz-invariant flows. In this context we address various notions of central charges and identify a monotonic candidate $c$-function that captures IR aspects of the flow. The UV behavior of the holographic entanglement entropy and, in particular its universal term, display an interesting dependence on the curvature, $κ$. We then contrast our holographic results with existing field theory computations in six dimensions and find a series of new corrections in curvature to the universal term in the entanglement entropy.

Human tissue and its constituent cells form a microenvironment that is fundamentally three-dimensional (3D). However, the standard-of-care in pathologic diagnosis involves selecting a few two-dimensional (2D) sections for microscopic evaluation, risking sampling bias and misdiagnosis. Diverse methods for capturing 3D tissue morphologies have been developed, but they have yet had little translation to clinical practice; manual and computational evaluations of such large 3D data have so far been impractical and/or unable to provide patient-level clinical insights. Here we present Modality-Agnostic Multiple instance learning for volumetric Block Analysis (MAMBA), a deep-learning-based platform for processing 3D tissue images from diverse imaging modalities and predicting patient outcomes. Archived prostate cancer specimens were imaged with open-top light-sheet microscopy or microcomputed tomography and the resulting 3D datasets were used to train risk-stratification networks based on 5-year biochemical recurrence outcomes via MAMBA. With the 3D block-based approach, MAMBA achieves an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.86 and 0.74, superior to 2D traditional single-slice-based prognostication (AUC of 0.79 and 0.57), suggesting superior prognostication with 3D morphological features. Further analyses reveal that the incorporation of greater tissue volume improves prognostic performance and mitigates risk prediction variability from sampling bias, suggesting the value of capturing larger extents of heterogeneous 3D morphology. With the rapid growth and adoption of 3D spatial biology and pathology techniques by researchers and clinicians, MAMBA provides a general and efficient framework for 3D weakly supervised learning for clinical decision support and can help to reveal novel 3D morphological biomarkers for prognosis and therapeutic response.

We use the Null Energy Condition to derive monotonicity properties of candidate holographic central charges formed by combinations of metric functions. We also implement an entropic approach to the characterization of the four-derivative flows using the Jacobson-Myers functional and demonstrate, under reasonable conditions, monotonicity of certain terms in the entanglement entropy via the appropriate generalization of the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. In particular, we show that any flow from a higher dimensional theory to a holographic CFT$_2$ satisfies a type of monotonicity. The superconformal index of $\mathcal N=4$ super-Yang Mills theory with $U(N)$ gauge group can be written as a matrix integral over the gauge group. Recently, Murthy demonstrated that this integral can be reexpressed as a sum of terms corresponding to a giant graviton expansion of the index, and provided an explicit formula for the case of a single giant graviton. Here we give similar explicit formulae for an arbitrary number, $m\ge1$, of giant gravitons. We provide 1/2 and 1/16 BPS index examples up to the order where three giant gravitons contribute and demonstrate that the expansion of the matrix integral differs from the giant graviton expansion computed in the supergravity dual. This shows that the giant graviton expansion is not necessarily unique once two or more giant gravitons start appearing.

We explore the notion of $c$-functions in renormalization group flows between theories in different spacetime dimensions. We discuss functions connecting central charges of the UV and IR fixed point theories on the one hand, and functions which are monotonic along the flow on the other. First, using the geometric properties of the holographic dual RG flows across dimensions and the constraints from the null energy condition, we construct a monotonic holographic $c$-function and thereby establish a holographic $c$-theorem across dimensions. Second, we use entanglement entropies for two different types of entangling regions in a field theory along the RG flow across dimensions to construct candidate $c$-functions which satisfy one of the two criteria but not both. In due process we also discuss an interesting connection between corner contributions to the entanglement entropy and the topology of the compact internal space. As concrete examples for both approaches, we holographically study twisted compactifications of 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM and compactifications of 6d $\mathcal N=(2,0)$ theories.

While the solutions are not complete, as they are only accurate up to $\mathcal{O}(M^2v^2)$, we are able to locally investigate their supersymmetric properties in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supergravity. The result indicates that, while a single BPS black hole preserves half of the supersymmetries, a configuration with two or more black holes is only 1/4 BPS. These perturbative solutions reduce in the asymptotically Minkowski limit to the multi-black hole solution of Majumdar and Papapetrou.

We show that, at the level of five-point string amplitudes, the kinematics in the maximally R-symmetry-violating sector is fully matched by standard superspace integrals and by superparticle amplitudes in M-theory on a two-torus. The latter approach is used to determine the complete effective action in this sector and to verify its invariance under SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality. We further comment on the general structure of the higher-point kinematics. Compactifications to lower dimensions provide both tests for our results and the arena for their applications. In two-derivative theories of gravity coupled to matter, charged black holes are self-attractive at large distances, with the force vanishing at zero temperature. However, in the presence of massless scalar fields and four-derivative corrections, zero-temperature black holes no longer need to obey the no-force condition. In this paper, we show how to calculate the long-range force between such black holes. We develop an efficient method for computing the higher-derivative corrections to the scalar charges when the two-derivative theory has a shift symmetry, and compute the resulting force in a variety of examples. We find that higher-derivative corrected black holes may be self-attractive or self-repulsive, depending on the value of the Wilson coefficients and the VEVs of scalar moduli. Indeed, we find black hole solutions which are both superextremal and self-attractive. Furthermore, we present examples where no choice of higher-derivative coefficients allows for self-repulsive black hole states in all directions in charge space. This suggests that, unlike the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which may be satisfied by the black hole spectrum alone, the Repulsive Force Conjecture requires additional constraints on the spectrum of charged particles.

We take two different approaches to explore the sub-leading structures of the free energy. First we evaluate the matrix integral for the partition function in the 't~Hooft limit using a saddle point approximation. Second we use an ideal Fermi-gas model to compute the same partition function, but in the limit of fixed Chern-Simons levels. The resulting expressions for the free energy $F=-\log Z$ are consistent with each other at the leading and first sub-leading order. The Fermi-gas approach also hints at a universal $\frac{1}{6}\log N$ correction to the free energy. Since the quiver gauge theories we consider are dual to massive Type IIA theory, we expect our results to match sub-leading corrections to the holographic dual free energy, which have not yet been fully investigated.

We classify the BAE solutions as standard (corresponding to a freely acting orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_m \times \mathbb{Z}_n$) and non-standard. For $N=2$, we find that the index is fully recovered by standard solutions and displays an interesting pattern of cancellations. However, for $N\ge 3$, the standard solutions alone do not suffice to reconstruct the index. We present quantitative arguments in various regimes of fugacities that highlight the challenging role played by the continuous families of non-standard solutions.

We systematically study various sub-leading structures in the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU($N$) gauge group. We concentrate in the superconformal index description as a matrix model of elliptic gamma functions and in the Bethe-Ansatz presentation. Our saddle-point approximation goes beyond the Cardy-like limit and we uncover various saddles governed by a matrix model corresponding to SU($N$) Chern-Simons theory. The dominant saddle, however, leads to perfect agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz approach. We also determine the logarithmic correction to the superconformal index to be $\log N$, finding precise agreement between the saddle-point and Bethe-Ansatz approaches in their respective approximations. We generalize the two approaches to cover a large class of 4d ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal theories. We find that also in this case both approximations agree all the way down to a universal contribution of the form $\log N$. The universality of this last result constitutes a robust signature of this ultraviolet description of asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and could be tested by low-energy IIB supergravity.

The interstellar oxygen isotopic ratio of 18O/17O can reflect the relative amount of the secular enrichment by ejecta from high-mass versus intermediate-mass stars. Previous observations found a Galactic gradient of 18O/17O, i.e., low ratios in the Galactic center and large values in the Galactic disk, which supports the insideout formation scenario of our Galaxy. However, the observed objects are not many and, in particular, not so many at large galactocentric distances. Thus we started a systematic study on Galactic interstellar 18O/17O, through observations of C18O and C17O multi-transition lines toward a large sample of 286 sources (at least one order of magnitude larger than previous ones), from the Galactic center region to the far outer Galaxy (~22 kpc). Here we present our observations of J=1-0 lines of C18O and C17O, with the ARO12m and the IRAM 30m telescope. We detected successfully both C18O and C17O 1-0 lines for 34 sources among our IRAM30m sample of 50 targets and for 166 sources among our ARO12m sample of 260 targets. The C18O optical depth effect on our ratio results, evaluated by fitting results of C17O spectra with hyperfine components and our RADEX non-LTE model calculation for the strongest source, was found to be insignificant. Beam dilution does not seem to be a problem either, which was supported by the fact of no systematic variation between the isotopic ratio and the heliocentric distance, and consistent measured ratios from two telescopes for most of those detected sources. Our results, though there are still very few detections made for sources in the outer Galaxy, confirm the apparent 18O/17O gradient of 18O/17O = (0.10+-0.03)R_GC+(2.95+-0.30), with a Pearson's rank correlation coefficient R = 0.69. This is supported by the newest Galactic chemical evolution model including the impact of massive stellar rotators and novae.

We compute the four-derivative corrections to the geometry, extremality bound, and thermodynamic quantities of AdS-Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m black holes for general dimensions and horizon geometries. We confirm the universal relationship between the extremality shift at fixed charge and the shift of the microcanonical entropy, and discuss the consequences of this relation for the Weak Gravity Conjecture in AdS. The thermodynamic corrections are calculated using two different methods: first by explicitly solving the higher-derivative equations of motion and second, by evaluating the higher-derivative Euclidean on-shell action on the leading-order solution. In both cases we find agreement, up to the addition of a Casimir energy in odd dimensions. We derive the bounds on the four-derivative Wilson coefficients implied by the conjectured positivity of the leading corrections to the microcanonical entropy of thermodynamically stable black holes. These include the requirement that the coefficient of Riemann-squared is positive, meaning that the positivity of the entropy shift is related to the condition that $c - a$ is positive in the dual CFT. We discuss implications for the deviation of $η/s$ from its universal value and a potential lower bound.

We then take the large-$N$ limit after the Cardy-like limit and make a conjecture for the leading asymptotics of the index. While the Cardy-like behavior is derived using the integral representation of the index, we demonstrate how the same results can be obtained using the Bethe ansatz type approach as well. In doing so, we discover new non-standard solutions to the elliptic Bethe ansatz equations including continuous families of solutions for $SU(N)$ theory with $N\ge3$. We argue that the existence of both standard and continuous non-standard solutions has a natural interpretation in terms of vacua of $\mathcal N=1^*$ theory on $\mathbb R^3\times S^1$.

Our focus is on the scales of the nAdS$_2$ region and their relation to microscopic theory. These scales are determined by a generalization of the attractor mechanism for extremal black holes and realized geometrically as the normal derivatives along the extremal attractor flow. In some cases the scales are equivalently determined by the charge dependence of the extremal attractor by itself. Our examples include near extreme black holes in $D\geq 4$ dimensions, AdS boundary conditions, rotation, and 5D black holes on the non-BPS branch.

We study the Casimir energy of bulk fields in AdS$_3$ and its relation to subleading terms in the central charge of the dual CFT$_2$. Computing both sides of the standard CFT$_2$ relation $E=-c/12$ independently we show that this relation is not necessarily satisfied at the level of individual bulk supergravity states, but in theories with sufficient supersymmetry it is restored at the level of bulk supermultiplets. Assuming only $(0,2)$ supersymmetry (or more), we improve the situation by relating quantum corrections to the central charge and the supersymmetric Casimir energy which in turn is related to an index. These relations adapt recent progress on the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence to AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ holography. We test our formula successfully in several examples, including the $(0,4)$ MSW theory describing classes of 4D black holes and the large $(4,4)$ theory that is interesting for higher spin holography. We also make predictions for the subleading central charges in several recently proposed $(2,2)$ dualities where the CFT$_2$ is not yet well-understood.

For this theory it is known that the logarithm of the topologically twisted index grows as $N^{5/3}$ and that it matches the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of certain magnetically charged asymptotically $AdS_4\times S^6$ black holes in massive type IIA supergravity. Through a combination of numerical and analytical techniques we study the subleading in $N$ structure. We demonstrate precise analytic cancellation of terms of orders $N\log\,N$ and $N^{1/3}\log N$ and show numerical cancellation for terms of order $N$. As a result, the first subleading correction is of order $N^{2/3}$. Furthermore, we provide evidence for the presence of a term of the form $(g-1)(7/18) \log \,N$ which constitutes a microscopic prediction for the one-loop contribution coming from the massless gravitational degrees of freedom in the massive IIA black hole.

For ${\cal N}=2^*$ theory with $U(N)$ gauge group we evaluate expectation values of Wilson loops in representations described by a rectangular Young tableau with $n$ rows and $k$ columns. The evaluation reduces to a two-matrix model and we explain, using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques, the general properties of the eigenvalue distributions in various regimes of parameters $(N,λ,n,k)$ where $λ$ is the 't Hooft coupling. In the large $N$ limit we present analytic results for the leading and sub-leading contributions. In the particular cases of only one row or one column we reproduce previously known results for the totally symmetry and totally antisymmetric representations. We also extensively discusss the ${\cal N}=4$ limit of the ${\cal N}=2^*$ theory. While establishing these connections we clarify aspects of various orders of limits and how to relax them; we also find it useful to explicitly address details of the genus expansion. As a result, for the totally symmetric Wilson loop we find new contributions that improve the comparison with the dual holographic computation at one loop order in the appropriate regime.

We numerically study the index beyond the large-$N$ limit and provide evidence that it contains a subleading logarithmic term of the form $-1/2\log N$. On the holographic side, this term naturally arises from a one-loop computation. However, we find that the contribution coming from the near horizon states does not reproduce the field theory answer. We give some possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy.

As a space-borne detector POLAR is designed to conduct hard X-ray polarization measurements of gamma-ray bursts on the statistically significant sample of events and with an unprecedented accuracy. During its development phase a number of tests, calibrations runs and verification measurements were carried out in order to validate instrument functionality and optimize operational parameters. In this article we present results on gain optimization togeter with verification data obtained in the course of broad laboratory and environmental tests. In particular we focus on exposures to the $^{137}$Cs radioactive source and determination of the gain dependence on the high voltage for all 1600 detection channels of the polarimeter. Performance of the instrument is described in detail with respect to the dynamic range, energy resolution and temperature dependence. Gain optimization algorithms and response non-uniformity studies are also broadly discussed. Results presented below constitute important parts for development of the POLAR calibration and operation database.

Gamma-ray polarimetry is a new powerful tool to study the processes responsible for the emission from astrophysical sources and the environments in which this emission takes place. Few successful polarimetric measurements have however been performed thus far in the gamma-ray energy band due to the difficulties involved. POLAR is a dedicated polarimeter designed to perform high precision measurements of the polarization of the emission from gamma-ray burst in the 50-500 keV energy range. This new polarimeter is expected to detect approximately 50 gamma-ray bursts per year while performing high precision polarization measurements on approximately 10 bursts per year. The instrument was launched into lower earth orbit as part of the second Chinese space lab, the Tiangong-2, on September 15th 2016 and has been taking data successfully since being switched on one week after. The instrument uses a segmented scintillator array consisting of 1600 plastic scintillator bars, read out by 25 flat-panel multi-anode photomultipliers, to measure the Compton scattering angles of incoming photons. The small segmentation and relatively large uniform effective area allow the instrument to measure the polarization of a large number of transient events, such as gamma-ray bursts, with an unprecedented precision during its two year life-time. The final flight model underwent detailed calibration prior to launch as well as intensive space qualification tests, a summary of which will be presented in this paper. The instrument design will be discussed first followed by an overview of the on-ground tests, finally the in-orbit behavior as measured during the first weeks of the mission will be presented.

We examine holographic theories where Lifshitz symmetry is broken with spatial anisotropy. In particular, we focus on the conditions imposed by the null energy condition, and demonstrate that it is possible to have unusual anisotropic fixed points where a subset of the spatial dimensions have negative scaling exponents. We also construct interpolating solutions between UV and IR fixed points and show that there is essentially no restriction placed on the endpoints of the flow once anisotropic scaling is allowed. As an example, we demonstrate a flow from AdS to AdS with $c_{IR}>c_{UV}$ that is allowed by the null energy condition since it proceeds through an intermediate Lorentz-violating region. Finally, we examine the holographic Green's function in anisotropic Lifshitz spacetimes.

We present results for the $m$-symmetric and $m$-antisymmetric representations by exploiting standard matrix model techniques. At leading order, in the saddle point approximation, our expressions reproduce holographic results from both D6 and D2 branes corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric representations, respectively. We also compute 1/N corrections to the leading saddle point results.

Abstract:
The large-$N$ limit of ABJM theory is holographically dual to M-theory on AdS$_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$. The 3-sphere partition function has been obtained via localization, and its leading behavior $F_{\text{ABJM}}^{(0)}\sim k^{1/2}N^{3/2}$ is exactly reproduced in the dual theory by tree-level supergravity. We extend this comparison to the sub-leading $\mathcal O(N^0)$ order by computing the one…

We extend this comparison to the sub-leading $\mathcal O(N^0)$ order by computing the one-loop supergravity free energy as a function of $k$ and comparing it with the ABJM result. Curiously, we find that the expressions do not match, with $F_{\text{SUGRA}}^{(1)}\sim k^6$, while $F_{\text{ABJM}}^{(1)}\sim k^2$. This suggests that the low-energy approximation $Z_{\text{M-theory}}=Z_{\text{SUGRA}}$ breaks down at one-loop order.

The absence of fixed momentum excitations in a theory with Lifshitz scale invariance gives rise to exponential suppression of spectral weight in the low-frequency limit. In the holographic dual, this suppression arises as a consequence of a tunneling barrier that decouples the horizon from the boundary. We compute the spin-1/2 holographic Green's function and show that the form of the barrier is identical to that of the scalar case. We furthermore demonstrate that the suppression factor is universal in the $\hatω\to0$ limit where $\hatω=ω/|\vec k|^z$. In particular, it depends only on $\hatω$ and the critical exponent $z$, and is independent of scaling dimension and spin.

Recently, a non-relativistic off-shell formulation of three dimensional Newton-Cartan supergravity was proposed as the $c \rightarrow \infty$ limit of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity in arXiv:1505.02095. In the present paper we study supersymmetric backgrounds within this theory. Using integrability constraints for the non-relativistic Killing spinor equations, we explicitly construct all maximally supersymmetric solutions, which admit four supercharges. In addition to these solutions, there are $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS solutions with reduced supersymmetry. We give explicit examples of such backgrounds and derive necessary conditions for backgrounds preserving two supercharges. Finally, we address how supersymmetric backgrounds of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity are connected to the solutions found here in the $c \rightarrow \infty$ limit.

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the strongest explosions in the universe which might be associated with creation of black holes. Magnetic field structure and burst dynamics may influence polarization of the emitted gamma-rays. Precise polarization detection can be an ultimate tool to unveil the true GRB mechanism. POLAR is a space-borne Compton scattering detector for precise measurements of the GRB polarization. It consists of a 40$\times$40 array of plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs (MaPMTs). It is scheduled to be launched into space in 2016 onboard of the Chinese space laboratory TG2. We present a dedicated methodology for POLAR calibration and some calibration results based on the combined use of the laboratory radioactive sources and polarized X-ray beams from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. They include calibration of the energy response, computation of the energy conversion factor vs. high voltage as well as determination of the threshold values, crosstalk contributions and polarization modulation factors.
