Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of exceptional type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. This paper continues a long-standing effort to classify the connected reductive subgroups of $G$. Having previously completed the classification when $p$ is sufficiently large, we focus here on the case that $p$ is bad for $G$. We classify the connected reductive subgroups of $G$ which are not $G$-completely reducible, whose simple components have rank at least $3$. For each such subgroup $X$, we determine the action of $X$ on the adjoint module $L(G)$ and on a minimal non-trivial $G$-module, and the connected centraliser of $X$ in $G$. As corollaries we obtain information on: subgroups which are maximal among connected reductive subgroups; products of commuting $G$-completely reducible subgroups; subgroups with trivial connected centraliser; and subgroups which act indecomposably on an adjoint or minimal module for $G$.

We describe a new approach for classifying conjugacy classes of elementary abelian subgroups in simple algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field, and understanding the normaliser and centraliser structure of these. For toral subgroups, we give an effective classification algorithm. For non-toral elementary abelian subgroups, we focus on algebraic groups of exceptional type with a view to future applications, and in this case we provide tables explicitly describing the subgroups and their local structure. We then describe how to transfer results to the corresponding finite groups of Lie type using the Lang-Steinberg Theorem; this will be used in forthcoming work to complete the classification of elementary abelian $p$-subgroups for torsion primes $p$ in finite groups of exceptional Lie type. Such classification results are important for determining the maximal $p$-local subgroups and $p$-radical subgroups, both of which play a crucial role in modular representation theory.

The second part concerns consequences of this theory when $G$ is simple of exceptional type, specifically its role in elucidating the subgroup structure of $G$. The latter subject has a history going back about sixty years. We give an overview of what is known, up to the present day. We also take the opportunity to offer several corrections to the literature.

Abstract:
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. In this paper we complete the classification of connected $G$-cr subgroups when $G$ has exceptional type, by determining the $L_{0}$-irreducible connected reductive subgroups for each simple classical factor $L_{0}$ of a Levi subgroup of $G$. As an illustration, we determine all reducible, $G$-cr semisimple subgroups when $G$ has type $F_4$ and various properties thereof. This work complements results of Lawther, Liebeck, Seitz and Testerman, and is vital in classifying non-$G$-cr reductive subgroups, a project being undertaken by the authors elsewhere.

The study of finite subgroups of a simple algebraic group $G$ reduces in a sense to those which are almost simple. If an almost simple subgroup of $G$ has a socle which is not isomorphic to a group of Lie type in the underlying characteristic of $G$, then the subgroup is called non-generic. This paper considers non-generic subgroups of simple algebraic groups of exceptional type in arbitrary characteristic.
A finite subgroup is called Lie primitive if it lies in no proper subgroup of positive dimension. We prove here that many non-generic subgroup types, including the alternating and symmetric groups $\text{Alt}_{n}$, $\text{Sym}_{n}$ for $n \ge 10$, do not occur as Lie primitive subgroups of an exceptional algebraic group.
A subgroup of $G$ is called $G$-completely reducible if, whenever it lies in a parabolic subgroup of $G$, it lies in a conjugate of the corresponding Levi factor. Here, we derive a fairly short list of possible isomorphism types of non-$G$-completely reducible, non-generic simple subgroups.
As an intermediate result, for each simply connected $G$ of exceptional type, and each non-generic finite simple group $H$ which embeds into $G/Z(G)$, we derive a set of feasible characters, which restrict the possible composition factors of $V \downarrow S$, whenever $S$ is a subgroup of $G$ with image $H$ in $G/Z(G)$, and $V$ is either the Lie algebra of $G$ or a non-trivial Weyl module for $G$ of least dimension.
This has implications for the subgroup structure of the finite groups of exceptional Lie type. For instance, we show that for $n \ge 10$, $\text{Alt}_n$ and $\text{Sym}_n$, as well as numerous other almost simple groups, cannot occur as a maximal subgroup of an almost simple group whose socle is a finite simple group of exceptional Lie type.

A closed subgroup $H$ of $G$ is called $G$-completely reducible ($G$-cr) if whenever $H$ is contained in a parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, it is contained in a Levi subgroup of $P$. In this paper we determine the $G$-conjugacy classes of non-$G$-cr simple connected subgroups of $G$ when $p$ is good for $G$. For each such subgroup $X$, we determine the action of $X$ on the adjoint module $L(G)$ and the connected centraliser of $X$ in $G$. As a consequence we classify all non-$G$-cr connected reductive subgroups of $G$, and determine their connected centralisers. We also classify the subgroups of $G$ which are maximal among connected reductive subgroups, but not maximal among all connected subgroups.
