Richard A. Litherland: A Brief Biography
Abstract: Richard A. Litherland was born in 1953 in England. He received his PhD at Trinity College in Cambridge in 1979 and moved to the USA in 1983. He had a lengthy and distinguished career as a professor of mathematics and researcher of low-dimensional topology, based primarily at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge until his untimely passing in November 2022. In this paper we (Rick's family… ▽ More

Surgery description of colored knots
Abstract: The pair (K,r) consisting of a knot K and a surjective map r from the knot group onto a dihedral group is said to be a p-colored knot. D. Moskovich conjectured that for any odd prime p there are exactly p equivalence classes of p-colored knots up to surgery along unknots in the kernel of the coloring. We show that there are at most 2p equivalence classes. This is a vast improvement upon the prev… ▽ More

Quadratic quandles and their link invariants
Abstract: Carter, Jelsovsky, Kamada, Langford and Saito have defined an invariant of classical links associated to each element of the second cohomology of a finite quandle. We study these invariants for Alexander quandles of the form Z[t,t^{-1}]/(p, t^2 + kappa t + 1), where p is a prime number and t^2 + kappa t + 1 is irreducible modulo p. For each such quandle, there is an invariant with values in the… ▽ More

The Betti numbers of some finite racks
Abstract: We show that the lower bounds for Betti numbers given in math.GT/9909161 are equalities for a class of racks that includes dihedral and Alexander racks. We confirm a conjecture from the same paper by defining a splitting for the short exact sequence of quandle chain complexes. We define isomorphisms between Alexander racks of certain forms, and we also list the second and third homology groups o… ▽ More

The homology of abelian coverings of knotted graphs
Abstract: Let N be a regular branched cover of a homology 3-sphere M with deck group G isomorphic to Z_2^d and branch set a trivalent graph Gamma; such a cover is determined by a coloring of the edges of Gamma with elements of G. For each index-2 subgroup H of G, M_H = N/H is a double branched cover of M. Sakuma has proved that the first homology of N is isomorphic, modulo 2-torsion, to the direct sum of… ▽ More
