In this work, we generalize the spacetime induced by a rotating cosmic string, taking into account anisotropic effects due the breaking of the Lorentz violation. In particular, we explore the energy levels of a massive spinless particle that is covariantly coupled to a uniform magnetic field aligned with the string. Subsequently, we introduce a scalar potential featuring both a Coulomb-type and a linear confining term and comprehensively solve the Klein-Gordon equations for each configuration. Finally, by imposing rigid-wall boundary conditions, we determine the Landau levels when the linear defect itself possesses magnetization. Notably, our analysis reveals the occurrence of Landau quantization even in the absence of gauge fields, provided the string possesses spin. Finally, the thermodynamic properties are computed as well in these scenarios.

We consider a (2+1)-dimensional modified electrodynamics endowed with terms that are either Lorentz-invariant or Lorentz-violating and involve an ever increasing number of derivatives. Our construction relies on U(1) gauge invariance and the Abelian Chern-Simons term poses the starting point. The structure of the nonminimal Standard-Model Extension (SME) in (3+1) spacetime dimensions serves as an inspiration for our pursuit. For elaborate studies and applications we particularly focus on the second term of the operator series in the general framework, which is the first contribution with additional derivatives. The latter forms the essential ingredient for several models of modified planar electrodynamics to be examined. The propagators of the models constitute the foundation for us deriving the physical propagating modes as well as for drawing conclusions on unitarity in the quantum regime. We are also interested in identifying parameter regions of sub- and superluminal mode propagation and determine classical solutions of the field equations for the planar models introduced. Moreover, a duality between an extended Chern-Simons theory and a subset of the fermion sector coefficients in the nonminimal SME is pointed out, as well. Finally, the integer quantum Hall effect is chosen as a testbed to demonstrate the applicability of our findings to real physical systems. Predictions on momentum- and direction-dependent corrections of the Hall resistivity are made at the level of effective field theory, which could be tested in experiments. Thus, the (2+1)-dimensional models proposed are potentially applicable to model electromagnetic phenomena in certain planar condensed-matter systems.

This paper explores the relativistic behavior of spin--half particles possessing an Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) in a curved spacetime background induced by a spiral dislocation. A thorough review of the mathematical formulation of the Dirac spinor in the framework of quantum field theory sets the foundation for our investigation. By deriving the action that governs the interaction between the spinor field, the background spacetime, and an external electric field, we establish a framework to study the dynamics of the system. Solving the resulting wave equation reveals a set of coupled equations for the radial components of the Dirac spinor, which give rise to a modified energy spectrum attributed to the EDM. To validate our findings, we apply them to the geometric phase and thermodynamics.

In this work, we investigate the consequences of Lorentz-violating terms in the thermodynamic properties of a 1-dimensional quantum ring. Particularly, we use the ensemble theory to obtain our results of interest. The thermodynamic functions as well as the spin currents are calculated as a function of the temperature. We observe that parameter $ξ$, which triggers the Lorentz symmetry breaking, plays a major role in low temperature regime. Finally, depending on the configuration of the system, electrons can rotate in two different directions: clockwise and counterclockwise.

In this work we study how CPT-odd Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) electrodynamics as well as a dimension-5 extension of it affect the optical activity of continuous media. The starting point is dimension-3 MCFJ electrodynamics in matter whose modified Maxwell equations, permittivity tensor, and dispersion relations are recapitulated. Corresponding refractive indices are achieved in terms of the frequency and the vector-valued background field. For a purely timelike background, the refractive indices are real. Their associated propagation modes are circularly polarized and exhibit birefringence. For a purely spacelike background, one refractive index is always real and the other can be complex. The circularly polarized propagating modes may exhibit birefringence and dichroism (associated with absorption). Subsequently, we examine a dimension-five MCFJ-type electrodynamics, previously scrutinized in the literature, in a continuous medium. Following the same procedure, we find the refractive indices from a sixth-order dispersion equation. For a purely timelike background, three distinct refractive indices are obtained, one of them being real and two being complex. They are associated with two circularly polarized propagating modes that exhibit birefringence or dichroism, depending on the frequency range. Scenarios of propagation and absorption analogous to those found in dispersive dielectrics are also observed for spacelike background configurations. We conclude by comparing the dimension-three and five results and by emphasizing the richer phenomenology of the propagating modes in the higher-derivative model. Our results are applicable in the realm of Weyl semimetals.

In this paper, we consider an electrodynamics of higher derivatives coupled to a Lorentz-violating background tensor. Specifically, we are interested in a dimension-five term of the CPT-odd sector of the nonminimal Standard-Model Extension. By a particular choice of the operator $\hat{k}_{AF}$, we obtain a higher-derivative version of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term, $\frac{1}{2}ε^{κλμν}A_λD_κ\square F_{μν}$, with a Lorentz-violating background vector $D_κ$. This modification is subject to being investigated. We calculate the propagator of the theory and from its poles, we analyze the dispersion relations of the isotropic and anisotropic sectors. We verify that classical causality is valid for all parameter choices, but that unitarity of the theory is generally not assured. The latter is found to break down for certain configurations of the background field and momentum. In an analog way, we also study a dimension-five anisotropic higher-derivative CFJ term, which is written as $ε^{κλμν}A_λT_κ(T\cdot\partial)^{2}F_{μν}$ and is directly linked to the photon sector of Myers-Pospelov theory. Within the second model, purely timelike and spacelike $T_κ$ are considered. For the timelike choice, one mode is causal, whereas the other is noncausal. Unitarity is conserved, in general, as long as the energy stays real - even for the noncausal mode. For the spacelike scenario, causality is violated when the propagation direction lies within certain regimes. However, there are particular configurations preserving unitarity and strong numerical indications exist that unitarity is guaranteed for all purely spacelike configurations. The results improve our understanding of nonminimal CPT-odd extensions of the electromagnetic sector.

In this paper, we investigate an electrodynamics in which the physical modes are coupled to a Lorentz-violating (LV) background by means of a higher-derivative term. We analyze the modes associated with the dispersion relations (DRs) obtained from the poles of the propagator. More specifically, we study Maxwell's electrodynamics modified by a LV operator of mass dimension 6. The modification has the form ${D_{βα}}\partial_σF^{σβ}\partial_λ F^{λα}$, i.e., it possesses two additional derivatives coupled to a \textit{CPT}-even tensor $D_{βα}$ that plays the role of the fixed background. We first evaluate the propagator and obtain the dispersion relations of the theory. By doing so, we analyze some configurations of the fixed background and search for sectors where the energy is well-defined and causality is assured. A brief analysis of unitarity is included for particular configurations. Afterwards, we perform the same kind of analysis for a more general dimension-6 model. We conclude that the modes of both Lagrange densities are possibly plagued by physical problems, including causality and unitarity violation, and that signal propagation may become physically meaningful only in the high-momentum regime.
