In this paper, we consider a soliton gas of the focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries generated from the $N$-soliton solutions under the nonzero background. The spectral soliton density is chosen on the pure imaginary axis, excluding the branch cut $Σ_{c}=\left[-i, i\right]$. In the limit $N\to\infty$, we establish the Riemann-Hilbert problem of the soliton gas. Using the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest-descent method, this soliton gas under the nonzero background will decay to a constant background as $x\to+\infty$, while its asymptotics as $x\to-\infty$ can be expressed with a Riemann-Theta function, attached to a Riemann surface with genus-two. We also analyze the large $t$ asymptotics over the entire spatial domain, which is divided into three distinct asymptotic regions depending on the ratio $ξ=\frac{x}{t}$. Using the similar method, we provide the leading-order asymptotic behaviors for these three regions and exhibit the dynamics of large $t$ asymptotics.

Topologically nontrivial Haldane phase is theoretically proposed to be realized in the 1/3-magnetization ($M$) plateau of spin-1/2 trimer systems. However, the spin excitation gap, typical characteristic of Haldane phase, is not yet experimentally verified. Here, we report the nuclear magnetic resonance investigations into the low-energy spin dynamics in the $S=1/2$ spin-trimer antiferromagnetic chain compound Na$_2$Cu$_3$Ge$_{4-x}$Si$_{x}$O$_{12}$ ($x=0, 0.1\sim1.5$). In the parent compound ($x=0$), the spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) shows significantly different temperature dependence when the external magnetic field is increased above the critical field of $μ_0$$H_{c}$ = 29 T. The spin excitation gap is evidenced from the thermally activated behavior of $1/T_1(T)$ in the 1/3-$M$ plateau state. By substituting Ge$^{4+}$ with Si$^{4+}$, the critical field for the 1/3-$M$ plateau significantly decreases, e.g. $μ_0H_{c}=17$ T in $x=1.0$ samples, which results from the suppressed inter-trimer coupling $J_2$. The gapped spin excitation is confirmed again above 17 T, whose size shows temperature-dependent behavior for $μ_0H\geq25.72$ T. These observations provide further insights into the Haldane physics.

In this work, we analyze the asymptotic behaviors of high-order rogue wave solutions with multiple large parameters and discover novel rogue wave patterns, including claw-like, OTR-type, TTR-type, semi-modified TTR-type, and their modified patterns. A correlation is established between these rogue wave patterns and the root structures of the Adler--Moser polynomials with multiple roots. At the positions in the $(x,t)$-plane corresponding to single roots of the Adler--Moser polynomials, these high-order rogue wave patterns asymptotically approach first-order rogue waves. At the positions in the $(x,t)$-plane corresponding to multiple roots of the Adler--Moser polynomials, these rogue wave patterns asymptotically tend toward lower-order fundamental rogue waves, dispersed first-order rogue waves, or mixed structures of these rogue waves. These structures are related to the root structures of special Adler--Moser polynomials with new free parameters, such as the Yablonskii--Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy, among others. Notably, the positions of the fundamental lower-order rogue waves or mixed structures in these rogue wave patterns can be controlled freely under specific conditions.

Deep learning has shown promising results for multiple 3D point cloud registration datasets. However, in the underwater domain, most registration of multibeam echo-sounder (MBES) point cloud data are still performed using classical methods in the iterative closest point (ICP) family. In this work, we curate and release DotsonEast Dataset, a semi-synthetic MBES registration dataset constructed from an autonomous underwater vehicle in West Antarctica. Using this dataset, we systematically benchmark the performance of 2 classical and 4 learning-based methods. The experimental results show that the learning-based methods work well for coarse alignment, and are better at recovering rough transforms consistently at high overlap (20-50%). In comparison, GICP (a variant of ICP) performs well for fine alignment and is better across all metrics at extremely low overlap (10%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to benchmark both learning-based and classical registration methods on an AUV-based MBES dataset. To facilitate future research, both the code and data are made available online.

The discovery of underlying surface partial differential equation (PDE) from observational data has significant implications across various fields, bridging the gap between theory and observation, enhancing our understanding of complex systems, and providing valuable tools and insights for applications. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, termed physical-informed sparse optimization (PIS), for learning surface PDEs. Our approach incorporates both $L_2$ physical-informed model loss and $L_1$ regularization penalty terms in the loss function, enabling the identification of specific physical terms within the surface PDEs. The unknown function and the differential operators on surfaces are approximated by some extrinsic meshless methods. We provide practical demonstrations of the algorithms including linear and nonlinear systems. The numerical experiments on spheres and various other surfaces demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in simultaneously achieving precise solution prediction and identification of unknown PDEs.

Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) with few-GHz tooth spacing that provides the optimal trade-off between spectral resolution and refresh rate is a powerful tool for measuring and analyzing rapidly evolving transient events. Despite such an exciting opportunity, existing technologies compromise either the spectral resolution or refresh rate, leaving few-GHz DCS with robust design largely unmet for frontier applications. In this work, we demonstrate a novel GHz DCS by exploring the multimode interference-mediated spectral filtering effect in an all-fiber ultrashort cavity configuration. The GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb source is seeded by a dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser operating at fundamental repetition rates of about 1.0 GHz differing by 148 kHz, which has an excellent stability in the free-running state that the Allan deviation is only 101.7 mHz for an average time of 1 second. Thanks to the large repetition rate difference between the asynchronous dichromatic pulse trains, the GHz DCS enables a refresh time as short as 6.75 us, making it promising for studying nonrepeatable transient phenomena in real time. To this end, the practicality of the present GHz DCS is validated by successfully capturing the 'shock waves' of balloon and firecracker explosions outdoors. This GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb system promises a noteworthy improvement in acquisition speed and reliability without sacrificing measurement accuracy, anticipated as a practical tool for high-speed applications.

Here, we report the synthesis, structure and magnetic behaviors on a family of tetragonal tungsten-bronze structure K2RENb5O15 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd-Ho) compounds, which consist of 1D linear spin-chain structure built by RE3+ ions along the c-axis and well spatially separated by the nonmagnetic K/Nb-O polyhedrons with large interchain distances of ~ 8.80-8.88 Å in the ab-plane. The low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 1.8 K for all serial K2RENb5O15 compounds and the dominant ferromagnetic interactions for RE=Ce,Dy and antiferromagnetic interactions for other members. Among them, K2GdNb5O15 with spin only magnetic moment S=7/2, exhibits a long-range magnetic order with TN~0.31 K and strong spin fluctuations at low temperatures due to its low-dimension characteristics. Moreover, a large magnetocaloric effect under low field change of 0-2 T is realized at temperatures below 1 K for K2GdNb5O15, letting it as an ideal candidate for adiabatic magnetic refrigeration applications at sub-kelvin temperatures. The K2RENb5O15 become a rare family of insulting RE-based magnets to explore the novel 1D spin chain physics beyond the 3d TM-based counterparts, in terms of its combination of low dimension, strong spin-orbital coupling and the rich diversity of RE ions.

We present magnetostriction and thermal expansion measurements on multiferroic (Ni0.93Co0.07)3V2O8. The high field phase diagrams up to 33 T along the a, b and c directions are built. For H//a, as the magnetic field increases, two intermediate phases appear between the incommensurate phase and the paramagnetic phase at about 7 K, and then a magnetically induced phase appears above the paramagnetic phase. For H//b,thermal expansion measurement indicates a mutation in the spin lattice coupling of the high field phases. The interlaced phase boundary suggests a mixed state in the optical high field phase. For H//c, an intermediate phase between the commensurate phase and the incommensurate phase is detected. A nonlinear boundary between the intermediate phase and the low temperature incommensurate phase, and a clear boundary between the commensurate phase and the paramagnetic phase are found. These results indicate that do** Co2+ breaks the weak ferromagnetic moment of the commensurate phase, which exists in the parent compound Ni3V2O8 and (Ni0.9Co0.1)3V2O8. This nonlinear influence reflects complicated spin modulation in Ni3V2O8 by do** Co2+.

In this paper, we propose a general meshless structure-preserving Galerkin method for solving dissipative PDEs on surfaces. By posing the PDE in the variational formulation and simulating the solution in the finite-dimensional approximation space spanned by (local) Lagrange functions generated with positive definite kernels, we obtain a semi-discrete Galerkin equation that inherits the energy dissipation property. The fully-discrete structure-preserving scheme is derived with the average vector field method. We provide a convergence analysis of the proposed method for the Allen-Cahn equation. The numerical experiments also verify the theoretical analysis including the convergence order and structure-preserving properties.

However, existing scene-level datasets for deep learning-based 3D vision, limited to either synthetic environments or a narrow selection of real-world scenes, are quite insufficient. This insufficiency not only hinders a comprehensive benchmark of existing methods but also caps what could be explored in deep learning-based 3D analysis. To address this critical gap, we present DL3DV-10K, a large-scale scene dataset, featuring 51.2 million frames from 10,510 videos captured from 65 types of point-of-interest (POI) locations, covering both bounded and unbounded scenes, with different levels of reflection, transparency, and lighting. We conducted a comprehensive benchmark of recent NVS methods on DL3DV-10K, which revealed valuable insights for future research in NVS. In addition, we have obtained encouraging results in a pilot study to learn generalizable NeRF from DL3DV-10K, which manifests the necessity of a large-scale scene-level dataset to forge a path toward a foundation model for learning 3D representation. Side-scan sonar (SSS) is a lightweight acoustic sensor that is commonly deployed on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to provide high-resolution seafloor images. However, leveraging side-scan images for simultaneous localization and map** (SLAM) presents a notable challenge, primarily due to the difficulty of establishing sufficient amount of accurate correspondences between these images. To address this, we introduce a novel subframe-based dense SLAM framework utilizing side-scan sonar data, enabling effective dense matching in overlap** regions of paired side-scan images. With each image being evenly divided into subframes, we propose a robust estimation pipeline to estimate the relative pose between each paired subframes, by using a good inlier set identified from dense correspondences. These relative poses are then integrated as edge constraints in a factor graph to optimize the AUV pose trajectory.
The proposed framework is evaluated on three real datasets collected by a Hugin AUV. Among one of them includes manually-annotated keypoint correspondences as ground truth and is used for evaluation of pose trajectory. We also present a feasible way of evaluating map** quality against multi-beam echosounder (MBES) data without the influence of pose. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach effectively mitigates drift from the dead-reckoning (DR) system and enables quasi-dense bathymetry reconstruction. An open-source implementation of this work is available.

Motivated by the need for the rigorous analysis of the numerical stability of variational least-squares kernel-based methods for solving second-order elliptic partial differential equations, we provide previously lacking stability inequalities. This fills a significant theoretical gap in the previous work [Comput. Math. Appl. 103 (2021) 1-11], which provided error estimates based on a conjecture on the stability. With the stability estimate now rigorously proven, we complete the theoretical foundations and compare the convergence behavior to the proven rates. Furthermore, we establish another stability inequality involving weighted-discrete norms, and provide a theoretical proof demonstrating that the exact quadrature weights are not necessary for the weighted least-squares kernel-based collocation method to converge. Our novel theoretical insights are validated by numerical examples, which showcase the relative efficiency and accuracy of these methods on data sets with large mesh ratios. The results confirm our theoretical predictions regarding the performance of variational least-squares kernel-based method, least-squares kernel-based collocation method, and our new weighted least-squares kernel-based collocation method. Most importantly, our results demonstrate that all methods converge at the same rate, validating the convergence theory of weighted least-squares in our proven theories.

Rare-earth (RE) kagome-lattice magnets offer an excellent platform to discover the novel magnetic phase as well as quantum phase transition tuned by non-thermal control parameters, while the experimental realizations remain largely unexplored. Here, we report the discovery of magnetic-field (B)-induced anisotropic quantum phase transition in a distorted kagome antiferromagnet Nd3BWO9 with TN~0.32 K. The isothermal magnetizations at 0.05 K exhibit the spin-flop like metamagnetic crossover behaviors with different fractional magnetization anomalies for B perpendicular (B // c-axis) and parallel (B // a*-axis) to the kagome plane, respectively. In combination with the thermodynamic measurements, the field-temperature (B-T) phase diagrams for both field directions are constructed and that reveal the existence of several field-induced magnetic states. Along the c-axis, a proximate quantum bicritical point is observed near the metamagnetic crossover, which separates the low-field antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and the intermediate AFM phase. While, for B // a*, another intermediate magnetic phase (IAFM2) appears between the low-field AFM phase and intermediate AFM (IAFM1) phase, giving rise to a tetracritical point. These results support the anisotropic field-induced metamagnetic quantum criticalities in Nd3BWO9, making it as a rare kagome antiferromagnet to investigate the quantum multi-criticality driven by spin frustration.

In this work, we measured the magnetostriction and magnetization of BaFe$_{1.908}$Ni$_{0.092}$As$_{2}$ single crystals using pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T and static magnetic fields up to 33 T, respectively. A huge longitudinal magnetostriction (of the order of 10$ ^{-4} $) was observed in the direction of the twin boundaries. The magnetization measurements evidence a high critical-current density due to strong bulk pinning. By using magnetization data with an exponential flux-pinning model, we can reproduce the magnetostriction curves qualitatively. Bokeh is widely used in photography to draw attention to the subject while effectively isolating distractions in the background. Computational methods simulate bokeh effects without relying on a physical camera lens. However, in the realm of digital bokeh synthesis, the two main challenges for bokeh synthesis are color bleeding and partial occlusion at object boundaries. Our primary goal is to overcome these two major challenges using physics principles that define bokeh formation. To achieve this, we propose a novel and accurate filtering-based bokeh rendering equation and a physically-based occlusion-aware bokeh renderer, dubbed Dr.Bokeh, which addresses the aforementioned challenges during the rendering stage without the need of post-processing or data-driven approaches. Our rendering algorithm first preprocesses the input RGBD to obtain a layered scene representation. Dr.Bokeh then takes the layered representation and user-defined lens parameters to render photo-realistic lens blur. By softening non-differentiable operations, we make Dr.Bokeh differentiable such that it can be plugged into a machine-learning framework. We perform quantitative and qualitative evaluations on synthetic and real-world images to validate the effectiveness of the rendering quality and the differentiability of our method. We show Dr.Bokeh not only outperforms state-of-the-art bokeh rendering algorithms in terms of photo-realism but also improves the depth quality from depth-from-defocus.

Wet chemistry C-S-H precipitation experiments were performed under controlled conditions of solution supersaturation in the presence and absence of gluconate and three hexitol molecules. Characterization of the precipitates with SAXS and cryo-TEM experiments confirmed the presence of a multi-step nucleation pathway. Induction times for the formation of the amorphous C-S-H spheroids were determined from light transmittance. Analysis of those data with the classical nucleation theory revealed a significant increase of the kinetic prefactor in the same order as the complexation constants of calcium and silicate with each of the organics. Finally, two distinct precipitation regimes of the C-S-H amorphous precursor were identified: i) a nucleation regime at low saturation indexes (SI) and ii) a spinodal nucleation regime at high SI where the free energy barrier to the phase transition is found to be of the order of the kinetic energy or less.

Electric bikes (e-bikes), including lightweight e-bikes with pedals and e-bikes in scooter form, are gaining popularity around the world because of their convenience and affordability. At the same time, e-bike-related accidents are also on the rise and many policymakers and practitioners are debating the feasibility of building e-bike lanes in their communities. By collecting e-bikes and bikes data in Shanghai City, the study first recalibrates the capacity of the conventional bike lane based on the traffic movement characteristics of the mixed bikes flow. Then, the study evaluates the traffic safety performance of the mixed bike flow in the conventional bike lane by the observed passing events. Finally, this study proposes a comprehensive model for evaluating the feasibility of building an e-bike lane by integrating the Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy mathematics by considering the three objectives: capacity, safety, and budget constraint. The proposed model, one of the first of its kind, can be used to (i) evaluate the existing road capacity and safety performance improvement of a mixed bike flow with e-bikes and human-powered bikes by analyzing the mixed bike flow arrival rate and passing maneuvers, and (ii) quantify the changes to the road capacity and safety performance if a new e-bike lane is constructed. Numerical experiments are performed to calibrate the proposed model and evaluate its performance using non-motorized vehicles' trajectories in Shanghai, China. The numerical experiment results suggest that the proposed model can be used by policymakers and practitioners to evaluate the feasibility of building e-bike lanes.

While the growth of TNCs took a substantial part of ridership and asset value away from the traditional taxi industry, existing taxi market policy regulations and planning models remain to be reexamined, which requires reliable estimates of the sensitivity of labor supply and income levels in the taxi industry. This study aims to investigate the impact of TNCs on the labor supply of the taxi industry, estimate wage elasticity, and understand the changes in taxi drivers' work preferences. We introduce the wage decomposition method to quantify the effects of TNC trips on taxi drivers' work hours over time, based on taxi and TNC trip record data from 2013 to 2018 in New York City. The data are analyzed to evaluate the changes in overall market performances and taxi drivers' work behavior through statistical analyses, and our results show that the increase in TNC trips not only decreases the income level of taxi drivers but also discourages their willingness to work. We find that 1% increase in TNC trips leads to 0.28% reduction in the monthly revenue of the yellow taxi industry and 0.68% decrease in the monthly revenue of the green taxi industry in recent years. More importantly, we report that the work behavior of taxi drivers shifts from the widely accepted neoclassical standard behavior to the reference-dependent preference (RDP) behavior, which signifies a persistent trend of loss in labor supply for the taxi market and hints at the collapse of taxi industry if the growth of TNCs continues. In addition, we observe that yellow and green taxi drivers present different work preferences over time. Consistently increasing RDP behavior is found among yellow taxi drivers. Green taxi drivers were initially revenue maximizers but later turned into income targeting strategy

In particular, the generalized finite difference method is used as a localized meshless technique to discretize the surface gradient and Laplace-Beltrami operators defined extrinsically in the governing equations. An absorbing boundary condition is introduced to reduce reflections from boundaries and accurately simulate wave propagation on unclosed surfaces with periodic inclusions. Several benchmark examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method in simulating acoustic wave propagation on surfaces with diverse geometries, including complex shapes and periodic holes or inclusions.

We present elliptic-rogue wave solutions for integrable nonlinear soliton equations in theta functions. Unlike solutions generated on the plane wave background, these solutions depict rogue waves emerging on elliptic function backgrounds. By refining the modified squared wave function method in tandem with the Darboux-Bäcklund transformation, we establish a quantitative correspondence between elliptic-rogue waves and the modulational instability. This connection reveals that the modulational instability of elliptic function solutions triggers rational-form solutions displaying elliptic-rogue waves, whereas the modulational stability of elliptic function solutions results in the rational-form solutions exhibiting the elliptic-solitons or elliptic-breathers. Moreover, this approach enables the derivation of higher-order elliptic-rogue waves, offering a versatile framework for constructing elliptic-rogue waves and exploring modulational stability in other integrable equations.

We report NMR study on the spin correlations in the spin-cluster based mineral Na$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$ with magnetic fields ranged from 1 T to 33 T. The long-range magnetic order is observed from both the sudden spectral broadening at $T_N$ and critical slowing down behavior in the temperature dependence of spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1(T)$). The hump behavior of $1/T_1(T)$ persists to $μ_0H=7.25$ T, above which a spin excitation gap is observed from the thermally activated temperature dependence of $1/T_1$. The gap size shows a linear field dependence, whose slope and intercept respectively yield an effective magnetic moment of 2.54 $μ_B$ and a 0.94 meV spin excitation gap under zero magnetic field. These results indicate the existence of short-range order and prominent easy-plane spin anisotropy, which are important for understanding the spin excitation spectrum in A$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$.

This study explores the vaccine prioritization strategy to reduce the overall burden of the pandemic when the supply is limited. Existing methods conduct macro-level or simplified micro-level vaccine distribution by assuming the homogeneous behavior within subgroup populations and lacking mobility dynamics integration. Directly applying these models for micro-level vaccine allocation leads to sub-optimal solutions due to the lack of behavioral-related details. To address the issue, we first incorporate the mobility heterogeneity in disease dynamics modeling and mimic the disease evolution process using a Trans-vaccine-SEIR model. Then we develop a novel deep reinforcement learning to seek the optimal vaccine allocation strategy for the high-degree spatial-temporal disease evolution system. The graph neural network is used to effectively capture the structural properties of the mobility contact network and extract the dynamic disease features. In our evaluation, the proposed framework reduces 7% - 10% of infections and deaths than the baseline strategies. Extensive evaluation shows that the proposed framework is robust to seek the optimal vaccine allocation with diverse mobility patterns in the micro-level disease evolution system. In particular, we find the optimal vaccine allocation strategy in the transit usage restriction scenario is significantly more effective than restricting cross-zone mobility for the top 10% age-based and income-based zones. These results provide valuable insights for areas with limited vaccines and low logistic efficacy.

Acoustic sensors play an important role in autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Sidescan sonar (SSS) detects a wide range and provides photo-realistic images in high resolution. However, SSS projects the 3D seafloor to 2D images, which are distorted by the AUV's altitude, target's range and sensor's resolution. As a result, the same physical area can show significant visual differences in SSS images from different survey lines, causing difficulties in tasks such as pixel correspondence and template matching. In this paper, a canonical transformation method consisting of intensity correction and slant range correction is proposed to decrease the above distortion. The intensity correction includes beam pattern correction and incident angle correction using three different Lambertian laws (cos, cos2, cot), whereas the slant range correction removes the nadir zone and projects the position of SSS elements into equally horizontally spaced, view-point independent bins. The proposed method is evaluated on real data collected by a HUGIN AUV, with manually-annotated pixel correspondence as ground truth reference. Experimental results on patch pairs compare similarity measures and keypoint descriptor matching. The results show that the canonical transformation can improve the patch similarity, as well as SIFT descriptor matching accuracy in different images where the same physical area was ensonified.

However, using side-scan images to perform simultaneous localization and map** (SLAM) remains a challenge when there is a lack of 3D bathymetric information and discriminant features in the side-scan images. To tackle this, we propose a feature-based SLAM framework using side-scan sonar, which is able to automatically detect and robustly match keypoints between paired side-scan images. We then use the detected correspondences as constraints to optimize the AUV pose trajectory. The proposed method is evaluated on real data collected by a Hugin AUV, using as a ground truth reference both manually-annotated keypoints and a 3D bathymetry mesh from multibeam echosounder (MBES). Experimental results demonstrate that our approach is able to reduce drifts from the dead-reckoning system. The framework is made publicly available for the benefit of the community.

In this paper, we explore the integrable fractional derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (fDNLS) equation by using the inverse scattering transform. Firstly, we start from the recursion operator and obtain a formal fDNLS equation. Then the inverse scattering problem is formulated and solved through the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. Subsequently, we give the explicit form of the fDNLS equation according to the properties of squared eigenfunctions, such as squared eigenfunctions are the eigenfunctions of the recursion operator of the integrable equations. The reflectionless potential with a simple pole for the zero boundary condition is carried out explicitly by means of determinants. Finally, for the fractional one-soliton solution, we analyze the wave propagation direction and the effect of the small fractional parameter $ε$ on the wave. The fractional one-soliton solution has been verified rigorously. In addition, we also analyze the fractional rational solution obtained by taking the limit of the fractional one-soliton solution.

Lighting effects such as shadows or reflections are key in making synthetic images realistic and visually appealing. To generate such effects, traditional computer graphics uses a physically-based renderer along with 3D geometry. To compensate for the lack of geometry in 2D Image compositing, recent deep learning-based approaches introduced a pixel height representation to generate soft shadows and reflections. However, the lack of geometry limits the quality of the generated soft shadows and constrain reflections to pure specular ones. We introduce PixHt-Lab, a system leveraging an explicit map** from pixel height representation to 3D space. Using this map**, PixHt-Lab reconstructs both the cutout and background geometry and renders realistic, diverse, lighting effects for image compositing. Given a surface with physically-based materials, we can render reflections with varying glossiness. To generate more realistic soft shadows, we further propose to use 3D-aware buffer channels to guide a neural renderer. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that PixHt-Lab significantly improves soft shadow generation.

We are interested in generating surfaces with arbitrary roughness and forming patterns on the surfaces. Two methods are applied to construct rough surfaces. In the first method, some superposition of wave functions with random frequencies and angles of propagation are used to get periodic rough surfaces with analytic parametric equations. The amplitude of such surfaces is also an important variable in the provided eigenvalue analysis for the Laplace-Beltrami operator and in the generation of pattern formation. Numerical experiments show that the patterns become irregular as the amplitude and frequency of the rough surface increase. For the sake of easy generalization to closed manifolds, we propose a second construction method for rough surfaces, which uses random nodal values and discretized heat filters. We provide numerical evidence that both surface {construction methods} yield comparable patterns to those {observed} in real-life animals.

We study the large-order asymptotics for the Kuznetsov-Ma breather of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the far-field regime. With the aid of Darboux transformation, we first derive the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert representation for the high-order Kuznetsov-Ma breathers. Under the far-field limit, there are five asymptotical regions in the space-time plane where the breathers behave differently, the genus-two region, the algebraic-decay region, and three distinct genus-zero regions. With the aid of the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest decent method, we give the leading order term for each region and verify the consistency between the exact solution and the asymptotic solution numerically. Compared to the previous studies about the large-order asymptotic analysis of rogue waves and solitons, we find a novel genus-two asymptotic region, which further enriches the research of large-order dynamics.

We systematically investigate rogue wave's spatial-temporal pattern in $N$ $(N\geq2)$-component coupled defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The fundamental rogue wave solutions are given in a unified form for both focusing and defocusing cases. We establish the quantitative correspondence between modulation instability and rogue wave patterns, which develops the previously reported inequality relation into an equation correspondence. As an example, we demonstrate phase diagrams for rogue wave patterns in a two-component coupled system, based on the complete classification of their spatial-temporal structures. The phase diagrams enable us to predict various rogue wave patterns, such as the ones with a four-petaled structure in both components. These results are meaningful for controlling the rogue wave excitations in two orthogonal polarization optical fibers.

Therefore, we obtain the fractional $n$-soliton solutions of the fractional coupled Hirota equation by inverse scattering transformation in the reflectionless case. In particular, we analyze the one- and two-soliton solutions of the fractional coupled Hirota equation and prove that the fractional two-soliton can also be regarded as a linear superposition of two fractional single solitons as $|t|\to\infty$. The dynamics of multi-soliton was well known to us since 70s of the last century by the determinant analysis. However, there is few progress on the high-order solitons. In this work, we would like to analyze the large order asymptotics for the high-order breathers, which are special cases of double high-order solitons with the same velocity to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. To analyze the large order dynamics, we first convert the representation of Darboux transformation into a framework of Riemann-Hilbert problem. Then we show that there exist five distinct asymptotic regions by the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. It is very interesting that a novel genus-three asymptotic region is first found in the large order asymptotics to large high-order breathers, which enriches the dynamic behaviors in the field of large order solitons. Dark soliton is usually seen as one of the simplest topological solitons, due to the phase jump across its density dip. We investigate the phase jump properties of dark solitons in a single mode optical fiber with the third-order dispersion and delayed nonlinear response, based on exact analytical solutions of Hirota equation. Our analysis indicates that a single-valley dark soliton (SVDS) can admit two distinct phase jumps at the same velocity, in sharp contrast to the dark soliton with only the second-order dispersion and self-phase modulation, which admits a one-to-one match between the velocity and phase jump. We further uncover the different topological vector potentials underlying the distinct phase jumps. The relations between phase jump and velocity of the SVDS can explain the generation of the previously reported double-valley dark soliton (DVDS). The detailed analysis on the two phase jumps characters of the DVDS with one identical velocity enables us to obtain U-shaped type or double-step type phase distribution. We further explore collision properties of the DVDSs by analyzing their topological phase, which can be considered as the generalization of topological phase (Phys. Rev. E 103, L040204). Strikingly, the inelastic collision can lead to the conversion between the two types of phase distributions for DVDS. The results reveal that inelastic or elastic collision can be judged by analyzing the magnetic monopole fields.

We investigate the magnetic ground state of Sm$_3$BWO$_9$ with the distorted kagome lattice. A magnetic phase transition is identified at $T_N=0.75$ K from the temperature dependence of specific heat. From $^{11}$B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, an incommensurate magnetic order is shown by the double-horn type spectra under a $c$-axis magnetic field. While, absence of line splitting is observed for field oriented within the $ab$-plane, indicating the incommensurate modulation of the internal field strictly along $c$-axis. From the spin dynamics, the critical slowing down behavior is observed in the temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ with $μ_0H\perp c$-axis, which is completely absent in that with $μ_0H||c$-axis. Based on the local symmetry of $^{11}$B sites, we analyze the hyperfine coupling tensors and propose two constraints on the possible magnetic structure. We mainly construct and analyze the multi elliptic-localized solutions under the background of elliptic function solutions for the focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation. Based on the Darboux-Bäcklund transformation, we provide a uniform expression for these solutions by the Jacobi theta functions. The asymptotic behaviors of multi elliptic-localized solutions are provided directly in two categories. By the consistent asymptotic expression of those solutions, we obtain that the collisions between the elliptic-breathers/solitons are elastic. Moreover, a sufficient condition of the strictly elastic collision between the solitons and breathers has been given by the symmetric analysis. In addition, as $k\rightarrow0^{+}$, the multi elliptic-localized solutions degenerate into solitons, breathers or soliton-breather solutions, which implies that we extend the solutions from the constant and vanishing backgrounds to the periodic solutions backgrounds. Moreover, we illustrate figures of the multi elliptic-localized solutions to visualize the above analysis.

This study also analyzes the significance of the results obtained by the presented approaches, performs a thorough methodological comparison between them, in-depth result analysis, and proposes a novel ensemble method for enhanced recognition. Our analysis shows that surgical workflow analysis is not yet solved, and also highlights interesting directions for future research on fine-grained surgical activity recognition which is of utmost importance for the development of AI in surgery.

This paper investigates the numerical behavior of the radial basis functions least-squares collocation (RBF-LSC) method of lines (MoL) for solving surface diffusion problems, building upon the theoretical analysis presented in [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 61 (3), 1386-1404}]. Specifically, we examine the impact of the oversampling ratio, defined as the number of collocation points used over the number of RBF centers for quasi-uniform sets, on the stability of the eigenvalues, time step** sizes taken by Runge-Kutta methods, and overall accuracy of the method. By providing numerical evidence and insights, we demonstrate the importance of the oversampling ratio for achieving accurate and efficient solutions with the RBF-LSC-MoL method. Our results reveal that the oversampling ratio plays a critical role in determining the stability of the eigenvalues, and we provide guidelines for selecting an optimal oversampling ratio that balances accuracy and computational efficiency.

The present paper investigates the influence of gluconate and hexitol additives on the precipitation mechanism and kinetics of C-S-H. To this end, wet chemistry C-S-H precipitation experiments were performed under controlled conditions of solution supersaturation, under varying silicate concentration, while the transmittance of the solution was followed. This allowed determining induction times for the formation of C-S-H precursors in the presence and absence of gluconate and three hexitol molecules. Characterization of the precipitates was performed via small angle X-ray scattering and cryo-transmission electron microscopy experiments, which allowed the identification of a multi-step nucleation pathway also in the presence of the organics. Analysis of the induction time data in the framework of the classical nucleation theory revealed a significant increase of the kinetic pre-factor, which is associated to physical rates of cluster collision and aggregation during the nucleation process. Values of the kinetic pre-factor increase in the same order as the complexation constants of calcium and silicate with the each of the organics. This points to a retarding mechanism of crystallization related to steric hindrance of the aggregation of the early formed clusters via adsorption of the organics at their surfaces.

The DT is then utilized to construct various exact solutions including bright soliton, dark-soliton, breather and rogue wave solutions to the CCSP equation. In case of vanishing boundary condition (VBC), we perform the inverse scattering analysis to understand the soliton solution better. Breather and rogue wave solutions are constructed in case of non-vanishing boundary condition (NVBC). Moreover, we conduct a modulational instability (MI) analysis based on the method of squared eigenfunctions, whose result confirms the condition for the existence of rogue wave solution.

Weak Gaussian perturbations on a plane wave background could trigger lots of rogue waves, due to modulational instability. Numerical simulations showed that these rogue waves seemed to have similar unit structure. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no relative result to prove that these rogue waves have the similar patterns for different perturbations, partly due to that it is hard to measure the rogue wave pattern automatically. In this work, we address these problems from the perspective of computer vision via using deep neural networks. We propose a Rogue Wave Detection Network (RWD-Net) model to automatically and accurately detect RWs on the images, which directly indicates they have the similar computer vision patterns. For this purpose, we herein meanwhile have designed the related dataset, termed as Rogue Wave Dataset-$10$K (RWD-$10$K), which has $10,191$ RW images with bounding box annotations for each RW unit. In our detection experiments, we get $99.29\%$ average precision on the test splits of the RWD-$10$K dataset. Finally, we derive our novel metric, the density of RW units (DRW), to characterize the evolution of Gaussian perturbations and obtain the statistical results on them.

We study the spectral and orbital stability of elliptic function solutions for the focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation and construct the corresponding breather solutions to exhibit the stable or unstable dynamic behavior. The elliptic function solutions of the mKdV equation and related fundamental solutions of the Lax pair are exactly represented by theta functions. Based on the `modified squared wavefunction' (MSW) method, we construct all linear independent solutions of the linearized mKdV equation and then provide a necessary and sufficient condition of the spectral stability for elliptic function solutions with respect to subharmonic perturbations. In the case of spectrum stability, the orbital stability of elliptic function solutions is established in a suitable Hilbert space. Using Darboux-Bäcklund transformation, we construct breather solutions to exhibit unstable or stable dynamic behavior. Through analyzing the asymptotic behavior, we find that the breather solution under the cn-type solution background is equivalent to the elliptic function solution adding a small perturbation as $t\to\pm\infty$.

There are plenty of applications and analysis for time-independent elliptic partial differential equations in the literature hinting at the benefits of overtesting by using more collocation conditions than the number of basis functions. Overtesting not only reduces the problem size, but is also known to be necessary for stability and convergence of widely used unsymmetric Kansa-type strong-form collocation methods. We consider kernel-based meshfree methods, which is a method of lines with collocation and overtesting spatially, for solving parabolic partial differential equations on surfaces without parametrization. In this paper, we extend the time-independent convergence theories for overtesting techniques to the parabolic equations on smooth and closed surfaces.

We report the local probe investigation of a frustrated antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$ with the distorted kagome lattice. Absence of magnetic order or spin freezing is indicated by the spectral analysis down to 0.3 K and specific heat measurements down to 0.09 K. The Knight shifts show an upturn behavior with the sample cooling down, which is further suppressed by external field. For the spin dynamics, gapped spin excitation is observed from the temperature dependence of spin-lattice relaxation rates, with the gap size proportional to the applied magnetic field intensity. Comparatively, an unexpected sharp peak is observed in the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate data at $T^*\sim 4-5$ K. These results indicate an unconventional persistent fluctuating paramagnetic ground state with antiferromagnetic collective spin excitations in the strongly frustrated spin system.

Understanding influencing factors is essential for the surveillance and prevention of infectious diseases, and the factors are likely to vary spatially and temporally as the disease progresses. Taking daily cases and deaths data during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in the U.S. as a case study, we develop a mobility-augmented geographically and temporally weighted regression (M-GTWR) model to quantify the spatiotemporal impacts of social-demographic factors and human activities on the COVID-19 dynamics. Different from the base GTWR model, we incorporate a mobility-adjusted distance weight matrix where travel mobility is used in addition to the spatial adjacency to capture the correlations among local observations. The model residuals suggest that the proposed model achieves a substantial improvement over other benchmark methods in addressing the spatiotemporal nonstationarity. Our results reveal that the impacts of social-demographic and human activity variables present significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. In particular, a 1% increase in population density may lead to 0.63% and 0.71% more daily cases and deaths, and a 1% increase in the mean commuting time may result in 0.22% and 0.95% increases in daily cases and deaths. Although increased human activities will, in general, intensify the disease outbreak, we report that the effects of grocery and pharmacy-related activities are insignificant in areas with high population density. And activities at the workplace and public transit are found to either increase or decrease the number of cases and deaths, depending on particular locations. The results of our study establish a quantitative framework for identifying influencing factors during a disease outbreak, and the obtained insights may have significant implications in guiding the policy-making against infectious diseases.

Direct evidence of micro-turbulence effect on the onset of neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) is reported for the first time in this letter. A puzzling positive correlation between critical width of seed island of NTM and normalized plasma pressure beta_p is first observed employing a novel method for clearly separating the processes of seed island and the onset of NTM in the EAST tokamak. Different from the methods developed before, the width of the seed island is well controlled by slowly ram** up the current in resonant magnetic perturbation coils. It is revealed that the positive correlation is mainly attributed to the enhancement of perpendicular transport by micro-turbulence, which overcomes the destabilizing effect of beta_p on the onset of NTM. Reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling well reproduced the two states of nonlinear bifurcations observed in this experiment by including the finite transport effect. This result provides a new route for understanding multi-scale interaction in plasma physics.
