In both samples modifications of the electronic pair-breaking peaks when interchanging the a- and b-axis were observed. The lineshapes of several phonon modes involving plane and apical oxygen vibrations exhibit pronounced anisotropies with respect to the incident and scattered light field configurations. Based on a theoretical model that takes both electronic and phononic contributions to the Raman spectra into account, we attribute the anisotropy of the superconductivity-induced changes in the phonon lineshapes to a small s-wave admixture to the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pair wave-function. Our theory allows us to disentangle the electronic Raman signal from the phononic part and to identify corresponding interference terms. We argue that the Raman spectra are consistent with an s-wave admixture with an upper limit of 20 percent.

The proximity of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the phase diagram of iron arsenides, the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling and the "resonance peak" in the superconducting spin excitation spectrum have fostered the hypothesis of magnetically mediated Cooper pairing. However, since most theories of superconductivity are based on a pairing boson of sufficient spectral weight in the normal state, detailed knowledge of the spin excitation spectrum above the superconducting transition temperature Tc is required to assess the viability of this hypothesis. Using inelastic neutron scattering we have studied the spin excitations in optimally doped BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 (Tc = 25 K) over a wide range of temperatures and energies. We present the results in absolute units and find that the normal state spectrum carries a weight comparable to underdoped cuprates. In contrast to cuprates, however, the spectrum agrees well with predictions of the theory of nearly antiferromagnetic metals, without complications arising from a pseudogap or competing incommensurate spin-modulated phases. We also show that the temperature evolution of the resonance energy follows the superconducting energy gap, as expected from conventional Fermi-liquid approaches. Our observations point to a surprisingly simple theoretical description of the spin dynamics in the iron arsenides and provide a solid foundation for models of magnetically mediated superconductivity.

The transport and superconducting properties of Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2 single crystals with T_c = 31 K were studied. Both in-plane and out-of plane resistivity was measured by modified Montgomery method. The in-plane resistivity for all studied samples, obtained in the course of the same synthesis, is almost the same, unlike to the out-of plane resistivity, which differ considerably. We have found that the resistivity anisotropy γ=ρ_c /ρ_{ab} is almost temperature independent and lies in the range 10-30 for different samples. This, probably, indicates on the extrinsic nature of high out-of-plane resistivity, which may appear due to the presence of the flat defects along Fe-As layers in the samples. This statement is supported by comparatively small effective mass anisotropy, obtained from the upper critical field measurements, and from the observation of the so-called "Friedel transition", which indicates on the existence of some disorder in the samples in c-direction.

In all samples we observe a strong continuous narrowing of the Raman-active Fe and As vibrations upon cooling below the spin-density-wave transition Ts. We attribute this effect to the opening of the spin-density-wave gap. The electron-phonon linewidths inferred from these data greatly exceed the predictions of ab-initio density functional calculations without spin polarization, which may imply that local magnetic moments survive well above Ts. A first-order structural transition accompanying the spin-density-wave transition induces discontinuous jumps in the phonon frequencies. These anomalies are increasingly suppressed for higher potassium concentrations. We also observe subtle phonon anomalies at the superconducting transition temperature Tc, with a behavior qualitatively similar to that in the cuprate superconductors.

The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures, which is indicative of multiple superconducting gaps, as in the electron-doped Pr(La)FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. Furthermore, no evidence was obtained for a microscopic coexistence of a long-range magnetic and superconductivity.

We present x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and neutron diffraction measurements on the slightly underdoped iron pnictide superconductor Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2, Tc = 32K. Below the magnetic transition temperature Tm = 70K, both techniques show an additional broadening of the nuclear Bragg peaks, suggesting a weak structural phase transition. However, macroscopically the system does not break its tetragonal symmetry down to 15 K. Instead, XRPD patterns at low temperature reveal an increase of the anisotropic microstrain proportionally in all directions. We associate this effect with the electronic phase separation, previously observed in the same material, and with the effect of lattice softening below the magnetic phase transition. We employ density functional theory to evaluate the distribution of atomic positions in the presence of dopant atoms both in the normal and magnetic states, and to quantify the lattice softening, showing that it can account for a major part of the observed increase of the microstrain.

Here we present a calculation of the temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (BKFA) on the basis of the electronic band structure [1,2] and momentum-dependent superconducting gap [3] extracted from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. The results are compared to the direct measurements of $λ(T)$ by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) [4]. The value of $λ(T=0)$, calculated with \emph{no} adjustable parameters, equals 270 nm, while the directly measured one is 320 nm; the temperature dependence $λ(T)$ is also easily reproduced. Such agreement between the two completely different approaches allows us to conclude that ARPES studies of BKFA are bulk-representative. Our review of the available experimental studies of the superconducting gap in the new iron-based superconductors in general allows us to state that all hole-doped of them bear two nearly isotropic gaps with coupling constants $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}=2.5\pm1.5$ and $7\pm2$.

The spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at Ts ~138 K in BaFe2As2 single crystals from self-flux shifts to Ts ~85 K due to Sn solvent growth. We show direct evidence for an incorporation of Sn on the Fe site. The electrical resistivity data show a sharp superconducting transition temperature Tc~38.5 K for the single crystal of Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2. A nearly 100% shielding fraction and bulk nature of the superconductivity for the single crystal were confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data. A sharp transition Tc~25 K occurred for the single crystal of Sr0.85K0.15Fe2As2. Using \muSR, we find the penetration-depth anisotropy γ_λ=λ_c/λ_{ab} and the second-critical-field anisotropy γ_{H_c2} to show an opposite T-evolution below T_c. This dichotomy resembles the situation in the two-gap superconductor MgB_2. A two-gap scenario is also suggested by an inflection point in the in-plane penetration depth λ_ab around 7K. The complementarity of \muSR and ARPES allows us to pinpoint the values of the two gaps and to arrive to a remarkable agreement between the two techniques concerning the full T-evolution of λ_ab. This provides further support for the described scenario and establishes ARPES as a tool to assess macroscopic properties of the superconducting condensate.

Here we present a combined study of the slightly underdoped novel pnictide superconductor Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) by means of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron scattering, muon spin rotation (muSR), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Commensurate static magnetic order sets in below Tm ~ 70 K as inferred from the emergence of the magnetic (1 0 -3) reflection in the neutron scattering data and from the observation of damped oscillations in the zero-field-muSR asymmetry. Transverse-field muSR below Tc shows a coexistence of magnetically ordered and non-magnetic states, which is also confirmed by MFM imaging. We explain such coexistence by electronic phase separation into antiferromagnetic and superconducting/normal state regions on a lateral scale of several tens of nanometers. Our findings indicate that such mesoscopic phase separation can be considered an intrinsic property of some iron pnictide superconductors.

The precise momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in the iron-arsenide superconductor with Tc = 32K (BKFA) was determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) via fitting the distribution of the quasiparticle density to a model. The model incorporates finite lifetime and experimental resolution effects, as well as accounts for peculiarities of BKFA electronic structure. We have found that the value of the superconducting gap is practically the same for the inner Gamma-barrel, X-pocket, and "blade"-pocket, and equals 9 meV, while the gap on the outer Gamma-barrel is estimated to be less than 4 meV, resulting in 2Delta/kT_c=6.8 for the large gap, and 2Delta/kT_c<3 for the small gap. A large (77 \pm 3%) non-superconducting component in the photoemission signal is observed below T_c. Details of gap extraction from ARPES data are discussed in Appendix.

The distribution of valence electrons in metals usually follows the symmetry of an ionic lattice. Modulations of this distribution often occur when those electrons are not stable with respect to a new electronic order, such as spin or charge density waves. Electron density waves have been observed in many families of superconductors[1-3], and are often considered to be essential for superconductivity to exist[4]. Recent measurements[5-9] seem to show that the properties of the iron pnictides[10, 11] are in good agreement with band structure calculations that do not include additional ordering, implying no relation between density waves and superconductivity in those materials[12-15]. Here we report that the electronic structure of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is in sharp disagreement with those band structure calculations[12-15], instead revealing a reconstruction characterized by a (pi,pi) wave vector. This electronic order coexists with superconductivity and persists up to room temperature.

Electronic phases with symmetry properties matching those of conventional liquid crystals have recently been discovered in transport experiments on semiconductor heterostructures and metal oxides at milli-Kelvin temperatures. We report the spontaneous onset of a onedimensional, incommensurate modulation of the spin system in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.45 upon cooling below ~150 K, while static magnetic order is absent above 2 K. The evolution of this modulation with temperature and do** parallels that of the in-plane anisotropy of the resistivity, indicating an electronic nematic phase that is stable over a wide temperature range. The results suggest that soft spin fluctuations are a microscopic route towards electronic liquid crystals, and nematic order can coexist with high-temperature superconductivity in underdoped cuprates.

The pseudogap is one of the most pervasive phenomena of high temperature superconductors. It is attributed either to incoherent Cooper pairing setting in above the superconducting transition temperature Tc, or to a hidden order parameter competing with superconductivity. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering from underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6) to show that the dispersion relations of spin excitations in the superconducting and pseudogap states are qualitatively different. Specifically, the extensively studied "hour glass" shape of the magnetic dispersions in the superconducting state is no longer discernible in the pseudogap state and we observe an unusual "vertical" dispersion with pronounced in-plane anisotropy. The differences between superconducting and pseudogap states are thus more profound than generally believed, suggesting a competition between these two states. Whereas the high-energy excitations are common to both states and obey the symmetry of the copper oxide square lattice, the low-energy excitations in the pseudogap state may be indicative of collective fluctuations towards a state with broken orientational symmetry predicted in theoretical work.

We find that both the magnitude and the temperature (T) dependence of the Knight shifts are identical in the two compounds above T_c. The spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) is also identical above T_0 \sim60 K for both compounds. Below T_0, the unhydrated sample is found to be a non-correlated metal that well conforms to Fermi liquid theory, while spin fluctuations develop in the superconductor. These results indicate that water intercalation does not change the density of states but its primary role is to bring about spin fluctuations. Our result shows that, in the hydrated superconducting compound, the in-plane spin fluctuation around finite wave vector is much stronger than that along the c-axis, which indicates that the spin correlation is quasi-two-dimensional.

The DC and AC magnetic susceptibilities of Na0.85CoO2 single crystals were measured for the different crystal orientations of H//(ab)- and H//(c)-axis. The DC-magnetic susceptibility for H//(c)-direction exhibited the antiferromagnetic transition at TN= 22 K. The thermal hysteresis between the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and the field-cooled (FC) magnetization below TN and the large frustration parameter indicated the spin frustration along the (c)-axis. For an applied magnetic field in H//(ab)-plane, the DC magnetic susceptibility exhibited the logarithmic divergent behavior at low temperatures (T < 6.8 K). This could be understood by the impurity spin effect, dressed by the spin fluctuation. From the AC magnetic susceptibility measurements, the real part of the AC-susceptibility for H//(ab) exhibited the spin glass-like behavior at low temperatures (T < 4 K). Remarkably, for an applied AC magnetic field with H//(c)-axis, the sign of the AC magnetic susceptibility changed from a positive to a negative value with increasing AC magnetic field frequency (f > 3 kHz) at low temperatures (T > 7 K). We interpret the sign change of AC magnetic susceptibility along the (c)-axis in terms of the sudden sign reversal of the phase difference from in-phase to out-of-phase response with an applied AC magnetic field in the AC-susceptibility phase space.

Analyzing the feedback effect of the conduction electrons on the phonon frequency we compare the calculated and experimentally observed do** dependence of the $A_{1g}$ mode. Furthermore, due to the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling for the $E_{1g}$ symmetry we find no renormalization of the corresponding phonon frequency which agrees with experiment. Our results shed light on the possible importance of the electron-phonon interaction in this system.

Instead, the system adopts an intermediate configuration in which 30 % of the lattice sites form an ordered pattern of localized Co3+ states. Above 180 K, an anomalous mobility of specific Na+ sites is found to coexist with this electronic texture, suggesting that the formation of the latter may contribute to stabilizing the Na+ ordering. Control of the ion do** in these materials thus appears to be crucial for fine-tuning of their thermoelectric properties.

The surprise discovery of superconductivity below 5K in sodium cobalt oxides when hydrated with water has caught the attention of experimentalists and theorists alike. Most explanations for its occurence have focused heavily on the properties of some small elliptically shaped pockets predicted to be the electronically dominant Fermi surface sheet, but direct attempts to look for them have instead cast serious doubts over their existence. We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

The shift decreases with decreasing temperature (T) down to T\sim100 K, then becomes a constant until superconductivity sets in. Both K^s_a and K^s_c decrease below T_c. Fitting the momentum distribution photoemission spectra to the Voigt profile appears to be a robust procedure to purify the interaction effects from the experimental resolution. In application to Bi-2212 high-Tc cuprates, the procedure reveals the true scattering rate at low binding energies and temperatures, and, consequently, the true value of the elastic scattering. Reaching the minimal value ~ 16 meV, the elastic scattering does not reveal a systematic dependence on do** level, but is rather sensitive to impurity concentration, and can be explained by the forward scattering on out-of-plane impurities. The inelastic scattering is found to form well-defined quasiparticles with the quadratic and cubic energy dependence of the scattering rate above and below Tc, respectively. The observed energy-temperature asymmetry of the scattering rate is also discussed.

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the in-plane anisotropy of magnetic excitations in twin-free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c =$ 61 K) reveals that the spin excitation spectra in the superconducting and normal states are qualitatively different. Below $T_c$, the spectrum consists of upward- and downward-dispersing branches with modest in-plane anisotropy merging at an energy $E_{res} =$ 37.5 meV. In the normal state, the singularity at $E_{res}$ disappears, and the spectrum exhibits a steep dispersion with a strongly anisotropic in-plane geometry. The threshold of the spin excitation continuum in the superconducting state, deduced from the energies and spectral weights of both modes, is compared with the superconducting d-wave gap, measured on the same samples by electronic Raman scattering in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry. Above a critical do** level of $δ\simeq 0.19$, both mode energies and the continuum threshold coincide. We find a simple scaling relationship between the characteristic energies and spectral weights of both modes, which indicates that the resonant modes are bound states in the superconducting energy gap, as predicted by the spin-exciton model of the resonant mode.

Single crystals of iron(IV) rich oxides SrFeO(3-x) with controlled oxygen content have been studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, magnetotransport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared ellipsometry in order to relate the large magnetoresistance (MR) effects in this system to phase composition, magnetic and charge order. It is shown that three different types of MR effects occur. In cubic SrFeO3 (x = 0) a large negative MR of 25% at 9 T is associated with a hitherto unknown 60 K magnetic transition and a subsequent drop in resistivity. The 60 K transition appears in addition to the onset of helical ordering at ~130 K. In crystals with vacancy-ordered tetragonal SrFeO(3-x) as majority phase (x ~0.15) a coincident charge/antiferromagnetic ordering transition near 70 K gives rise to a negative giant MR effect of 90% at 9 T. A positive MR effect is observed in tetragonal and orthorhombic materials with increased oxygen deficiency (x = 0.19, 0.23) which are insulating at low temperatures. Phase mixtures can result in a complex superposition of these different MR phenomena. The MR effects in SrFeO(3-x) differ from those in manganites as no ferromagnetic states are involved.

We apply the new-generation ARPES methodology to the most widely studied cuprate superconductor YBCO. Considering the nodal direction, we found noticeable renormalization effects known as "kinks" both in the quasiparticle dispersion and scattering rate, the bilayer splitting and evidence for strong interband scattering -- all the characteristic features of the nodal quasiparticles detected earlier in BSCCO. The typical energy scale and the do** dependence of the "kinks" clearly point to their intimate relation with the spin-1 resonance seen in the neutron scattering experiments. Our findings strongly suggest a universality of the electron dynamics in the bilayer superconducting cuprates and a dominating role of the spin-fluctuations in the formation of the quasiparticles along the nodal direction.

The heavily discussed "70 meV kink" on the renormalized dispersion exhibits a strong temperature and do** dependence when purified from structural effects. This dependence is well understood in terms of fermionic and bosonic constituents of the self-energy. The latter follows the evolution of the spin-fluctuation spectrum, emerging below T* and sharpening below Tc, and is the main responsible for the formation of the kink in question.

We identify the stoichiometric Na1CoO2 phase, which is shown to be a non-magnetic insulator, as expected for homogeneous planes of Co3+ ions with S=0. In addition, we present evidence that, because of slight average Na deficiency, chemical and electronic phase separation leads to a segregation of Na vacancies into the well-defined, magnetic, Na0.8CoO2 phase. The importance of phase separation is discussed in the context of magnetic order for x~0.8 and the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition for x->1.

We show that the nonmagnetic Zn atoms have much stronger effect both in nodal and antinodal parts of the Brillouin zone than magnetic Ni. The observed changes are consistent with the behaviour of the spin resonance mode as seen by inelastic neutron scattering in YBCO. This strongly suggests that the "peak-dip-hump" and the "kink" in ARPES on the one side and neutron resonance on the other are closely related features.

We find that the pseudogap (PG) phase persists deep inside the overdoped region but terminates at x \sim 0.05 that corresponds to the hole do** concentration of approximately 0.21. Beyond this critical point, the normal state is a Fermi liquid characterized by the T_1T=const relation. A comparison of the superconducting state with the H-induced normal state in the x=0.40 (T_c = 32 K) sample indicates that there remains substantial part of the Fermi surface even in the fully-developed PG state, which suggests that the PG and SC are coexisting matters.

The spin waves exhibit a strongly energy-dependent linewidth. The in-plane and out-of-plane exchange constants resulting from a fit to a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model are similar in magnitude, which is unexpected in view of the layered crystal structure of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$. Possible implications of these observations are discussed.

The fundamental building block of the copper oxide superconductors is a Cu4O4 square plaquette. In most of these materials, the plaquettes are slightly distorted and form a rectangular lattice. An influential theory predicts that high-temperature superconductivity is nucleated in "stripes" aligned along one of the axes of this lattice. This theory had received strong support from experiments that appeared to indicate a one-dimensional character of the magnetic excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6. Here we report neutron scattering data on "untwinned" YBa2Cu3O6+x crystals, in which the orientation of the rectangular lattice is maintained throughout the entire volume. Contrary to the earlier claim, we demonstrate that the geometry of the magnetic fluctuations is two-dimensional. Rigid stripe arrays therefore appear to be ruled out over a wide range of do** levels in YBa2Cu3O6+x, but the data may be consistent with liquid-crystalline stripe order.

The Na-extraction and hydration were carried out for the alpha'-sample to get superconducting phase of NaxCoO2.yH2O (x~0.3, y~1.3). Hydrated single crystals exhibit cracked layers perpendicular to the c-axis due to a large expansion when the water is inserted into the structure. A study of intercalation/deintercalation was performed to determine the stability of the hydrated phase and effects of hydration on the structure of the compound. X-ray diffraction and Thermogravimetric experiments are used to monitor the process of water molecules accommodated in and removed from the crystal lattice. The initial intercalation process takes place with two-water molecules corresponding to y=0.6) inserted in a formula unit, followed by a group of four (y=1.3) to form a cluster of Na(H2O)4. Thermogravimetric analysis suggests that the deintercalation occurs with the removal of the water molecules one by one from the hydrated cluster at elevated temperatures of approximately 50, 100, 200 and 300 C, respectively. Our investigations reveal that the hydration process is dynamic and that water molecule inter- and deintercalation follow different reaction paths in an irreversible way.

We identify two prominent transitions as a function of temperature. The first one at 280 K involves marked changes of the electronic and the lattice response that are indicative of charge ordering in the CoO$_{2}$ layers. The second transition coincides with T$_{N}$=19.8 K and reveals a sizeable spin-charge coupling. The data are discussed in terms of charge ordering and formation of magneto-polarons due to a charge-induced spin-state transition of adjacent Co$^{3+}$ ions.
