Purpose: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a significant cause of mortality in the United States. The objective of this study is to implement deep learning (DL) models using Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA), clinical data, and PE Severity Index (PESI) scores to predict PE mortality. Materials and Methods: 918 patients (median age 64 years, range 13-99 years, 52% female) with 3,978 CTPAs were identified via retrospective review across three institutions. To predict survival, an AI model was used to extract disease-related imaging features from CTPAs. Imaging features and/or clinical variables were then incorporated into DL models to predict survival outcomes. Four models were developed as follows: (1) using CTPA imaging features only; (2) using clinical variables only; (3) multimodal, integrating both CTPA and clinical variables; and (4) multimodal fused with calculated PESI score. Performance and contribution from each modality were evaluated using concordance index (c-index) and Net Reclassification Improvement, respectively. Performance was compared to PESI predictions using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to stratify patients into high- and low-risk groups. Additional factor-risk analysis was conducted to account for right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. Results: For both data sets, the PESI-fused and multimodal models achieved higher c-indices than PESI alone. Following stratification of patients into high- and low-risk groups by multimodal and PESI-fused models, mortality outcomes differed significantly (both p<0.001). A strong correlation was found between high-risk grou** and RV dysfunction. Conclusions: Multiomic DL models incorporating CTPA features, clinical data, and PESI achieved higher c-indices than PESI alone for PE survival prediction.

Here, by $^{63}$Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of CDW induced by an in-plane field that does not create vortex cores in the plane, setting in above the dome in single-layered Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_6$.The onset temperature $T_{\rm CDW}$ takes over the antiferromagnetic order temperature $T_{\rm N}$ beyond a critical do** level at which superconductivity starts to emerge, and scales with the psudogap temperature $T^{*}$. These results provide important insights into the relationship between spin order, CDW and the pseudogap, and their connections to high-temperature superconductivity.

We show that 63Cu NMR spectra place strong constraints on both the nature and the concentration of oxygen defects in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy. Systematic deviation from ideal ortho-II order is revealed by the presence of inequivalent Cu sites in either full or empty chains. The results can be explained by two kinds of defects: oxygen clustering into additional chains, or fragments thereof, most likely present at all concentrations (6.4<y<6.6) and oxygen vacancies randomly distributed in the full chains for y<6.50 only. Furthermore, the remarkable reproducibility of the spectra in different samples with optimal ortho-II order (y=6.55) shows that chain-oxygen disorder, known to limit electronic coherence, is ineluctable because it is inherent to these compounds.

Near-infrared femtosecond pulses of only few μJ energy generate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation between 5.5 and 9 eV inside the gas-filled fiber. These pulses are used to measure the band structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 with a signal to noise ratio comparable to that obtained with high order harmonics from a gas jet. The two-order-of-magnitude gain in efficiency promises time-resolved ARPES measurements at repetition rates of hundreds of kHz or even MHz, with photon energies that cover the first Brillouin zone of most materials.

We investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of the lattice dynamics of the underdoped, stoichiometric, high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 by means of Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This system undergoes a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition around 10 GPa to a collapsed orthorhombic structure, that is well reproduced by the calculation. The coupling of the B1g-like buckling phonon mode to the electronic continuum is used to probe superconductivity. In the low pressure phase, self-energy effects through the superconducting transition renormalize this phonon, and the amplitude of this renormalization strongly increases with pressure. Whereas our calculation indicates that this mode's coupling to the electronic system is only marginally affected by the structural phase transition, the aforementioned renormalization is completely suppressed in the high pressure phase, demonstrating that under hydrostatic pressures higher than 10 GPa, superconductivity in YBa2Cu4O8 is greatly weakened or obliterated.

In $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ we identify the optical spin-density--wave gap $2Δ_{\mathrm{SDW}}\approx1250\ \textrm{cm}^{-1}$. The $2Δ_{\mathrm{SDW}}/(k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{N}})$ ratio, characterizing the strength of the electron-electron coupling in the spin-density--wave state, amounts to $\approx12$ in $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, significantly larger than the corresponding values for the $\textrm{SrFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and $\textrm{BaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ compounds: 8.7 and 5.3, respectively. We further show that, similarly to the Ba-based compound, two characteristic SDW energy gaps can be identified in the infrared-conductivity spectra of both $\textrm{SrFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and investigate their detailed temperature dependence in all three materials. This analysis reveals the existence of an anomaly in $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ at a temperature $T^*\approx80\ \textrm{K}$, well below the Néel temperature of this compound, which implies weak coupling between the two SDW subsystems. The coupling between the two subsystems evolves to intermediate in the Sr-based and strong in the Ba-based material. The temperature dependence of the infrared phonons reveals clear anomalies at the corresponding Néel temperatures of the investigated compounds. In $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, the phonons exhibit signatures of SDW fluctuations above $T_N$ and some evidence for anomalies at $T^*$. (full abstract in PDF)

The temperature dependence of these new features indicates that they are associated with the incommensurate charge density wave state recently discovered using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques on the same single crystals. Raman scattering has thus the potential to explore the evolution of this state under extreme conditions.

A quantum critical point (QCP) is a point in a system's phase diagram at which an order is completely suppressed at absolute zero temperature (T). The presence of a quantum critical point manifests itself in the finite-T physical properties, and often gives rise to new states of matter. Superconductivity in the cuprates and in heavy fermion materials is believed by many to be mediated by fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. In the recently-discovered iron-pnictide high temperature superconductors, it is unknown whether a QCP exists or not in a carrier-doped system. Here we report transport and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on BaFe_{2-x}Ni_xAs_2 (0 =< x =< 0.17). We find two critical points at x_{c1} = 0.10 and x_{c2} = 0.14. The electrical resistivity follows ρ= ρ_0 + A*T^n, with n = 1 around x_{c1} and another minimal n = 1.1 at x_{c2}. By NMR measurements, we identity x_{c1} to be a magnetic QCP and suggest that x_{c2} is a new type of QCP associated with a nematic structural phase transition. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in carrier-doped pnictides is closely linked to the quantum criticality.

We study the band structure of the $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ topological insulator (111) surface using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We examine the situation where two sets of quantized subbands exhibiting different Rashba spin-splitting are created via bending of the conduction (CB) and the valence (VB) bands at the surface. While the CB subbands are strongly Rashba spin-split, the VB subbands do not exhibit clear spin-splitting. We find that CB and VB experience similar band bending magnitudes, which means, a spin-splitting discrepancy due to different surface potential gradients can be excluded. On the other hand, by comparing the experimental band structure to first principles LMTO band structure calculations, we find that the strongly spin-orbit coupled Bi 6$p$ orbitals dominate the orbital character of CB, whereas their admixture to VB is rather small. The spin-splitting discrepancy is, therefore, traced back to the difference in spin-orbit coupling between CB and VB in the respective subbands' regions.

This unexpected change of the resonance condition allows us to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between Raman and x-ray detection of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting cuprates. Intriguingly, the strongest variation occurs across the do** level where the antinodal superconducting gap reaches its maximum.

Using 63Cu NMR, we establish that the enhancement of spin order by a magnetic field H in YBa2Cu3O6.45 arises from a competition with superconductivity because the effect occurs for H perpendicular, but not parallel, to the CuO2 planes, and it persists up to field values comparable to Hc2. We also find that the spin-freezing has a glassy nature and that the frozen state onsets at a temperature which is independent of the magnitude of H. These results, together with the presence of a competing charge-ordering instability at nearby do** levels, are strikingly parallel to those previously obtained in La-214. This suggests a universal interpretation of magnetic field effects in underdoped cuprates where the enhancement of spin order by the field may not be the primary phenomenon but rather a byproduct of the competition between superconductivity and charge order. Low-energy spin fluctuations are manifested up to relatively high temperatures where they partially mask the signature of the pseudogap in 1/T1 data of planar Cu sites.

We report Raman scattering experiments on the strongly correlated electron system NaxCoO2 with x= 0.71 and ordered Na vacancies. In this do** regime, NaxCoO2 exhibits a large and unusual thermopower and becomes superconducting upon hydration. Our Raman scattering data reveal pronounced low energy fluctuations that diverge in intensity at low temperatures. Related to these fluctuations is a drastic decrease of an electronic scattering rate from 50 to 3 cm-1. This observation is quite different from the behavior of Na disordered samples that have a larger and temperature independent scattering rate. Simultaneously with the evolution of the scattering rate, phonon anomalies point to an increasing out-of-plane coherence of the lattice with decreasing temperature. These observations may indicate the condensation of spin polarons into an unusual, highly dynamic ground state.

We investigate magnetic ordering in metallic Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) and discuss the unusual magnetic phase, which was recently discovered for Mn concentrations x > 10%. We argue that it can be understood as a Griffiths-type phase that forms above the quantum critical point associated with the suppression of the stripe-antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) order in BaFe2As2 by the randomly introduced localized Mn moments acting as strong magnetic impurities. While the SDW transition at x = 0, 2.5% and 5% remains equally sharp, in the x = 12% sample we observe an abrupt smearing of the antiferromagnetic transition in temperature and a considerable suppression of the spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. According to our muon-spin-relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron-scattering data, antiferromagnetically ordered rare regions start forming in the x = 12% sample significantly above the Néel temperature of the parent compound. Upon cooling, their volume grows continuously, leading to an increase in the magnetic Bragg intensity and to the gradual opening of a partial spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Using neutron Larmor diffraction, we also demonstrate that the magnetically ordered volume is characterized by a finite orthorhombic distortion, which could not be resolved in previous diffraction studies most probably due to its coexistence with the tetragonal phase and a microstrain-induced broadening of the Bragg reflections. We argue that Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) could represent an interesting model spin-glass system, in which localized magnetic moments are randomly embedded into a SDW metal with Fermi surface nesting.

The temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field Hc2(T) relevant to EFKA is accounted for by the Pauli model including an anisotropic Pauli paramagnetic contribution (μ_BHp=114 T for H//ab and 86 T for H//c). This is also the case of KFS1 and KFS2 for H//ab whereas a significant upward curvature, accounted for by a two-gap model, is observed for H//c. Despite the presence of antiferromagnetic lattice order within the superconducting state of the studied compounds, no influence of magnetic ordering on the temperature dependence of Hc2(T) is observed.

We report a $^{63}$Cu NMR investigation in detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ single crystals, focusing on the highly underdoped regime (y=6.35-6.6). Measurements of both the spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of $^{63}$Cu uncover the emergence of static order at a well-defined onset temperature $T_0$ without a known order parameter as yet. While $T_0$ is rapidly suppressed with increasing hole do** concentration $p$, the spin pseudogap was identified only near and above the do** content at which $T_0\rightarrow 0$. Our data indicate the presence of a critical hole do** $p_c\sim 0.1$, which may control both the static order at $p<p_c$ and the spin pseudogap at $p>p_c$.

Spin excitations stemming from the metallic phase of the ferrochalcogenide superconductor K(0.77)Fe(1.85)Se(2) (T_c=32 K) were mapped out in the ab plane by means of the time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. We observed a magnetic resonant mode at Q_res=(1/2 1/4), whose energy and in-plane shape are almost identical to those in the related compound Rb(0.8)Fe(1.6)Se(2). This lets us infer that there is a unique underlying electronic structure of the bulk superconducting phase K(x)Fe(2)Se(2), which is universal for all alkali-metal iron selenide superconductors and stands in contrast to the do**-tunable phase diagrams of the related iron pnictides. Furthermore, the spectral weight of the resonance on the absolute scale, normalized to the volume fraction of the superconducting phase, is several times larger than in optimally doped BaFe(2-x)Co(x)As(2). We also found no evidence for any additional low-energy branches of spin excitations away from Q_res. Our results provide new input for theoretical models of the spin dynamics in iron based superconductors.

A satellite line associated with the Mn nearest neighbours (n.n.) of 75As displays a Curie-Weiss shift which demonstrates that Mn carries a local magnetic moment. This is confirmed by the main line broadening typical of a RKKY-like Mn-induced staggered spin polarization. The Mn moment is due to the localization of the additional Mn hole. These findings explain why Mn does not induce superconductivity in the pnictides contrary to other dopants such as Co, Ni, Ru or K.

The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 measured at the shifted peak with H//a, which experiences the internal field, shows a distinct decrease below Tc(μ_0H = 12 T) = 16 K, following a T^3 relation at low temperatures. Our results show unambiguously that antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity coexist microscopically. The unusual superconducting state with the coexisting magnetism is highlighted.

Among numerous hypotheses, recently proposed to explain superconductivity in iron-based superconductors [1-9], many consider Fermi surface (FS) nesting [2, 4, 8, 10] and dimensionality [4, 9] as important contributors. Precise determination of the electronic spectrum and its modification by superconductivity, crucial for further theoretical advance, were hindered by a rich structure of the FS [11-17]. Here, using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with resolution of all three components of electron momentum and electronic states symmetry, we disentangle the electronic structure of hole-doped BaFe2As2, and show that nesting and dimensionality of FS sheets have no immediate relation to the superconducting pairing. Alternatively a clear correlation between the orbital character of the electronic states and their propensity to superconductivity is observed: the magnitude of the superconducting gap maximizes at 10.5 meV exclusively for iron 3dxz;yz orbitals, while for others drops to 3.5 meV. Presented results reveal similarities of electronic response to superconducting and magneto-structural transitions [18, 19], implying that relation between these two phases is more intimate than just competition for FS, and demonstrate importance of orbital physics in iron superconductors.

We report results of inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements of low-energy spin-wave excitations in two structurally distinct families of iron-pnictide parent compounds: Na(1-δ)FeAs and BaFe2As2. Despite their very different values of the ordered magnetic moment and Néel temperatures, T_N, in the antiferromagnetic state both compounds exhibit similar spin gaps of the order of 10 meV at the magnetic Brillouin-zone center. The gap opens sharply below T_N, with no signatures of a precursor gap at temperatures between the orthorhombic and magnetic phase transitions in Na(1-δ)FeAs. We also find a relatively weak dispersion of the spin-wave gap in BaFe2As2 along the out-of-plane momentum component, q_z. At the magnetic zone boundary (q_z = 0), spin excitations in the ordered state persist down to 20 meV, which implies a much smaller value of the effective out-of-plane exchange interaction, J_c, as compared to previous estimates based on fitting the high-energy spin-wave dispersion to a Heisenberg-type model.

We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties in a range of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ compounds, with special emphasis on the c-axis polarized vibration of Fe with B$_{1g}$ symmetry, a Raman active mode common to all families of Fe-based superconductors. We have carried out a systematic study of the temperature dependence of this phonon mode as a function of Se $x$ and excess Fe $y$ concentrations. In parent compound Fe$_{1+y}$Te, we observe an unconventional broadening of the phonon between room temperature and magnetic ordering temperature $T_N$. The situation smoothly evolves towards a regular anharmonic behavior as Te is substituted for Se and long range magnetic order is replaced by superconductivity. Irrespective to Se contents, excess Fe is shown to provide an additional dam** channel for the B$_{1g}$ phonon at low temperatures. We performed Density Functional Theory (DFT) ab-initio calculations within the local density approximation (LDA) to calcuate the phonon frequencies including magnetic polarization and Fe non-stoichiometry in the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA). We obtained a good agreement with the measured phonon frequencies in the Fe-deficient samples, while the effects of Fe excess are poorly reproduced. This may be due to excess Fe-induced local magnetism and low energy magnetic fluctuations that can not be treated accurately within these approaches. As recently revealed by neutron scattering and $μ$-SR studies, these phenomena occur in the temperature range where anomalous decay of the B$_{1g}$ phonon is observed, and suggests a peculiar coupling of this mode with local moments and spin fluctuations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$.

Single crystals of superconducting KxFe2-ySe2 have been grown with the optical floating-zone technique under application of 8 bar of argon pressure. We found that large and high quality single crystals with dimensions of ~\varnothing6 \times 10 mm could be obtained at the termination of the grown ingot through quenching, while the remaining part of the ingot decomposed. As-grown single crystals commonly represent an intergrowth of two sets of the c-axis characterized by slightly different lattice constants. Single crystal of K0.80Fe1.81Se2 shows a superconducting transition at Tc = 31.6 K, leading to a near 100% expulsion of the external magnetic field in magnetization measurements. On the other hand, neutron-diffraction data indicate that superconductivity in the sample coexists with a iron-vacancy superstructure and static antiferromagnetic order. The anisotropic ratio of the upper critical field Hc2 for both H//c and H//ab configurations is \sim3.46.

As established by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) cleaved surfaces of the high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ develop charge density wave (CDW) modulations in the one-dimensional (1D) CuO chains. At the same time, no signatures of the CDW have been reported in the spectral function of the chain band previously studied by photoemission. We use soft X-ray angle resolved photoemission (SX-ARPES) to detect a chain-derived surface band that had not been detected in previous work. The $2k_\textup{F}$ for the new surface band is found to be 0.55\,Å$^{-1}$, which matches the wave vector of the CDW observed in direct space by STM. This reveals the relevance of the Fermi surface nesting for the formation of CDWs in the CuO chains in YBa$_2$Cu$_2$O$_{7-δ}$. In agreement with the short range nature of the CDW order the newly detected surface band exhibits a pseudogap, whose energy scale also corresponds to that observed by STM.

The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated with a uniaxial charge-density modulation and does not mediate d-wave superconductivity.

For temperatures below Tc, the resistivity curves were measured in magnetic fields within the range of 0 \leq B \leq 13 T, and the pinning potential was scaled according to a modified model for vortex liquid resistivity. Good scaling of the resistivity ρ(B, T) and the effective pinning energy U0(B,T) was obtained with the critical exponents s and B0. The vortex state is three-dimensional at temperatures lower than a characteristic temperature T*. The vortex phase diagram was determined based on the evolution of the vortex-glass transition temperature Tg with magnetic field and the upper critical field, Hc2. We found that non-magnetic K do** results in a high glass line close to the Hc2, while magnetic Ni and Co do** cause a low glass line which is far away from the Hc2. Our results suggest that non-magnetic induced disorder is more favourable for enhancement of pinning strength compared to magnetic induced disorder. Our results show that the pinning potential is responsible for the difference in the glass states.

Usually the superconducting pairing is considered to modify electronic states only in a narrow momentum range close to the Fermi surface. Here we present a direct experimental observation of fusion of Bogoliubov dispersion branches originating from the antipodal Fermi crossings by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Uncommon discernibility and brightness of bogoliubons' fusion stems from comparability of the superconducting gap magnitude and the distance from the Fermi level to the band's top, and strong electron scattering on a mode with similar energy. Such similarity of the electronic and pairing energy scales seems to be a persistent associate of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) rather than just a mere coincidence.

In the search for the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, intense research has been focused on the evolution of the spin excitation spectrum upon do** from the antiferromagnetic insulating to the superconducting states of the cuprates. Because of technical limitations, the experimental investigation of doped cuprates has been largely focused on low-energy excitations in a small range of momentum space. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to show that a large family of superconductors, encompassing underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ and overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, exhibits damped spin excitations (paramagnons) with dispersions and spectral weights closely similar to those of magnons in undoped cuprates. %The results are in excellent agreement with the spin excitations obtained by exact diagonalization of the $\bf t-J$ Hamiltonian on finite-sized clusters. The comprehensive experimental description of this surprisingly simple spectrum permits quantitative tests of magnetic Cooper pairing models. A numerical solution of the Eliashberg equations for the magnetic spectrum of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ reproduces its superconducting transition temperature within a factor of two, a level of agreement comparable to Eliashberg theories of conventional superconductors.

For both field orientations in Ba_0.68K_0.32Fe_2As_2, we find a concave curvature of the Hc2(T) lines with decreasing anisotropy and saturation towards lower temperature. Taking into account Pauli spin paramagnetism we can describe Hc2(T) and its anisotropy. In contrast, we find that Pauli paramagnetic pair breaking is not essential for Ba(Fe_0.93Co_0.07)_2As_2. For this electron-doped compound, the data support a Hc2(T) dependence that can be described by the Werthamer Helfand Hohenberg model for H || ab and a two-gap behavior for H || c.

The identification of both a T^2 term in zero field and a \sqrt{H} dependence of the specific heat in fields is shown to follow the theoretical prediction for d-wave pairing, which enables us to extract the slope of the superconducting gap in the vicinity of the nodes (v_Δ, which is proportional to the superconducting gap Δ_0 at the antinodes according to the standard d_{x^2-y^2} gap function). The v_Δ or Δ_0 (~ 12 meV) determined from this bulk measurement shows close agreement with that obtained from spectroscopy or tunneling measurements, which confirms the simple d-wave form of the superconducting gap.

The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ shows an exponential decrease below $T \simeq 0.45 T_{\rm c}$ down to $T \simeq 0.11 T_{\rm c}$, which indicates a fully opened energy gap. From the ratio $(T_{1})_{c} / (T_{1})_{a}$, where $a$ and $c$ denote the crystal directions, we find that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation is anisotropic in the spin space above $T_{\rm c}$. The anisotropy decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ and disappears at $T \rightarrow 0$. We argue that the anisotropy stems from spin-orbit coupling whose effect vanishes when spin-singlet electron pairs form with a nodeless gap.

In contrast to LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 where the superconducting gap is shown to be isotropic, the spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the Fe-arsenides decreases below Tc with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures. The Knight shift decreases below Tc and shows a step-wise T variation as well. These results indicate spinsinglet superconductivity with multiple gaps in the Fe-arsenides. The Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors, while there is no significant electron correlations in LaNiAsO0.9F0.1. We will discuss the implications of these results and highlight the importance of the Fermi surface topology.

We report a polarized neutron scattering study of the orbital-like magnetic order in strongly underdoped ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$. Their hole do** levels are located on both sides of the critical do** $p_{MI}$ of a metal-insulator transition inferred from transport measurements. Our study reveals a drop down of the orbital-like order slightly below $p_{MI}$ with a steep decrease of both the ordering temperature $T_{mag}$ and the ordered moment. Above $p_{MI}$, substitution of quantum impurities does not change $T_{mag}$, whereas it lowers significantly the bulk ordered moment. The modifications of the orbital-like magnetic order are interpreted in terms of a competition with electronic liquid crystal phases around $p_{MI}$. This competition gives rise to a mixed magnetic state in ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and a phase separation in ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$.

Early work on the iron-arsenide compounds supported the view, that a reduced dimensionality might be a necessary prerequisite for high-Tc superconductivity. Later, however, it was found that the zero-temperature upper critical magnetic field, Hc2(0), for the 122 iron pnictides is in fact rather isotropic. Here, we report measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Γ(T), in Ba0.5K0.5Fe2As2 and Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 single crystals in zero magnetic field and for Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 as well in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. We find that the resistivity of both compounds in zero field is well described by an exponential term due to inter-sheet umklapp electron-phonon scattering between light electrons around the M point to heavy hole sheets at the Γpoint in reciprocal space. From our data, we construct an H-T phase diagram for the inter-plane (H || c) and in-plane (H || ab) directions for Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2. Contrary to published data for underdoped 122 FeAs compounds, we find that Hc2(T) is in fact anisotropic in optimally doped samples down to low temperatures. The anisotropy parameter, γ = Habc2/Hcc2, is about 2.2 at Tc. For both field orientations we find a concave curvature of the Hc2 lines with decreasing anisotropy and saturation towards lower temperature. Taking into account Pauli spin paramagnetism we perfectly can describe Hc2(T) and its anisotropy.

One of the central tenets of conventional theories of superconductivity, including most models proposed for the recently discovered iron-pnictide superconductors, is the notion that only electronic excitations with energies comparable to the superconducting energy gap are affected by the transition. Here we report the results of a comprehensive spectroscopic ellipsometry study of a high-quality crystal of superconducting $\textrm{Ba}_{0.68}\textrm{K}_{0.32}\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ that challenges this notion. We observe a superconductivity-induced suppression of an absorption band at an energy of $2.5\ \textrm{eV}$, two orders of magnitude above the superconducting gap energy $2Δ\sim 20\ \textrm{meV}$. Based on density-functional calculations, this band can be assigned to transitions from As-p to Fe-d orbitals crossing the Fermi surface. We identify a related effect at the spin-density-wave transition in parent compounds of the 122 family. This suggests that As-p states deep below the Fermi level contribute to the formation of the superconducting and spin-density-wave states in the iron arsenides.

We present a neutron triple-axis and resonant spin-echo spectroscopy study of the spin correlations in untwinned YBCO crystals with x= 0.3, 0.35, and 0.45 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. As the temperature T approaches 0, all samples exhibit static incommensurate magnetic order with propagation vector along the a-direction in the CuO2 planes. The incommensurability delta increases monotonically with hole concentration, as it does in LSCO. However, delta is generally smaller than in LSCO at the same do** level. The intensity of the incommensurate Bragg reflections increases with magnetic field for YBCO(6.45) (superconducting Tc = 35 K), whereas it is field-independent for YBCO(6.35) (Tc = 10 K). These results suggest that YBCO samples with x ~ 0.5 exhibit incommensurate magnetic order in the high fields used for the recent quantum oscillation experiments on this system, which likely induces a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. We present neutron spin-echo measurements (with energy resolution ~ 1 micro-eV) for T > 0 that demonstrate a continuous thermal broadening of the incommensurate magnetic Bragg reflections into a quasielastic peak centered at excitation energy E = 0, consistent with the zero-temperature transition expected for a two-dimensional spin system with full spin-rotation symmetry. Measurements on YBCO(6.45) with a triple-axis spectrometer (with energy resolution ~ 100 micro-eV) yield a crossover temperature T_SDW ~ 30 K for the onset of quasi-static magnetic order. Upon further heating, the wavevector characterizing low-energy spin excitations approaches the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector, and the incommensurability vanishes in an order-parameter-like fashion at an "electronic liquid-crystal" onset temperature T_ELC ~ 150 K. Both T_SDW and T_ELC increase continuously as the Mott-insulating phase is approached with decreasing do** level.

We study the symmetry of spin excitation spectra in 122-ferropnictide superconductors by comparing the results of first-principles calculations with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 and BaFe1.91Ni0.09As2 samples that exhibit neither static magnetic phases nor structural phase transitions. In both the normal and superconducting (SC) states, the spectrum lacks the 42/m screw symmetry around the (1/2 1/2 L) axis that is implied by the I4/mmm space group. This is manifest both in the in-plane anisotropy of the normal- and SC-state spin dynamics and in the out-of-plane dispersion of the spin-resonance mode. We show that this effect originates from the higher symmetry of the magnetic Fe sublattice with respect to the crystal itself, hence the INS signal inherits the symmetry of the unfolded Brillouin zone (BZ) of the Fe sublattice. The in-plane anisotropy is temperature-independent and can be qualitatively reproduced in normal-state density-functional-theory calculations without invoking a symmetry-broken ("nematic") ground state that was previously proposed as an explanation for this effect. Below the SC transition, the energy of the magnetic resonant mode Er, as well as its intensity and the SC spin gap inherit the normal-state intensity modulation along the out-of-plane direction L with a period twice larger than expected from the body-centered-tetragonal BZ symmetry. The amplitude of this modulation decreases at higher do**, providing an analogy to the splitting between even and odd resonant modes in bilayer cuprates. Combining our and previous data, we show that at odd L a universal linear relationship Er=4.3*kB*Tc holds for all studied Fe-based superconductors, independent of their carrier type. Its validity down to the lowest do** levels is consistent with weaker electron correlations in ferropnictides as compared to the underdoped cuprates.

Zn substitution induces static magnetic order at low temperatures and triggers a large-scale spectral-weight redistribution from the magnetic resonant mode at 38 meV into uniaxial, incommensurate spin excitations with energies well below the spin-pseudogap. These observations indicate a competition between incommensurate magnetic order and superconductivity close to a quantum critical point. Comparison to prior data on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ suggests that this behavior is universal for the layered copper oxides and analogous to impurity-induced magnetic order in one-dimensional quantum magnets.

We report an experimental study of \nco, a Mott insulator containing chains of edge-sharing CuO$_4$ plaquettes, by polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant magnetic x-ray scattering (RMXS), magnetic susceptibility, and pyroelectric current measurements. The XAS data show that the valence holes reside exclusively on the Cu$^{2+}$ sites within the copper-oxide spin chains and populate a $d$-orbital polarized within the CuO$_4$ plaquettes. The RMXS measurements confirm the presence of incommensurate magnetic order below a Néel temperature of $T_N = 11.5$ K, which was previously inferred from neutron powder diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance data. In conjunction with the magnetic susceptibility and XAS data, they also demonstrate a new "orbital" selection rule for RMXS that is of general relevance for magnetic structure determinations by this technique. Dielectric property measurements reveal the absence of significant ferroelectric polarization below $T_N$, which is in striking contrast to corresponding observations on the isostructural compound \lco. The results are discussed in the context of current theories of multiferroicity.

The disordered flux line lattice in single crystals of the slightly overdoped aFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2 (x = 0.19, Tc = 23 K) superconductor is studied by magnetization measurements, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). In the whole range of magnetic fields up to 9 T, vortex pinning precludes the formation of an ordered Abrikosov lattice. Instead, a vitreous vortex phase (vortex glass) with a short-range hexagonal order is observed. Statistical processing of MFM datasets lets us directly measure its radial and angular distribution functions and extract the radial correlation length ζ. In contrast to predictions of the collective pinning model, no increase in the correlated volume with the applied field is observed. Instead, we find that ζdecreases as 1.3*R1 ~ H^(-1/2) over four decades of the applied magnetic field, where R1 is the radius of the first coordination shell of the vortex lattice. Such universal scaling of ζimplies that the vortex pinning in iron arsenides remains strong even in the absence of static magnetism. This result is consistent with all the real- and reciprocal-space vortex-lattice measurements in overdoped as-grown aFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2 published to date and is thus sample-independent. The failure of the collective pinning model suggests that the vortices remain in the single-vortex pinning limit even in high magnetic fields up to 9 T.

We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the electronic excitations of the non-superconducting state that exists between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at zero do** and the superconducting state at larger do**s in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}. We find that this state is a nodal liquid whose excitation gap becomes zero only at points in momentum space. Despite exhibiting a resistivity characteristic of an insulator and the absence of coherent quasiparticle peaks, this material has the same gap structure as the d-wave superconductor. We observe a smooth evolution of the spectrum across the insulator-to-superconductor transition, which suggests that high temperature superconductivity emerges when quantum phase coherence is established in a non-superconducting nodal liquid.

Abstract:
We report on Raman scattering experiments of the undoped SrFe2As2 and superconducting Sr0.85K0.15Fe2As2 (Tc=28K) and Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2 (Tc=32K) single crystals. The frequency and linewidth of the B1g mode at 210 cm-1 exhibits an appreciable temperature dependence induced by the superconducting and spin density wave transitions. We give estimates of the electron-phonon coupling related to this renormalization. In addition, we observe a pronounced quasi-elastic Raman response for the undoped compound, suggesting persisting magnetic fluctuations to low temperatures. In the superconducting state the renormalization of an electronic continuum is observed with a threshold energy of 61cm-1.
