Improved Lieb-Oxford bound on the indirect and exchange energies
Abstract: The Lieb-Oxford inequality provides a lower bound on the Coulomb energy of a classical system of $N$ identical charges only in terms of their one-particle density. We prove here a new estimate on the best constant in this inequality. Numerical evaluation provides the value 1.58, which is a significant improvement to the previously known value 1.64. The best constant has recently been shown to be l… ▽ More

A trace inequality of Ando, Hiai and Okubo and a monotonicity property of the Golden-Thompson inequality
Abstract: The Golden-Thompson trace inequality which states that $Tr\, e^{H+K} \leq Tr\, e^H e^K$ has proved to be very useful in quantum statistical mechanics. Golden used it to show that the classical free energy is less than the quantum one. Here we make this G-T inequality more explicit by proving that for some operators, notably the operators of interest in quantum mechanics, $H=Δ$ or… ▽ More

On the extension of the FKG inequality to $n$ functions
Abstract: The 1971 Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre (FKG) inequality for two monotone functions on a distributive lattice is well known and has seen many applications in statistical mechanics and other fields of mathematics. A simplified approach to the repulsive Bose gas from low to high densities and its numerical accuracy
Abstract: In 1963, a Simple Approach was developed to study the ground state energy of an interacting Bose gas. It consists in the derivation of an Equation, which is not based on perturbation theory, and which gives the exact expansion of the energy at low densities. This Equation is expressed directly in the thermodynamic limit, and only involves functions of $3$ variables, rather than $3N$. Here, we revi… ▽ More

Analysis of a simple equation for the ground state of the Bose gas II: Monotonicity, Convexity and Condensate Fraction
Abstract: In a recent paper we studied an equation (called the "simple equation") introduced by one of us in 1963 for an approximate correlation function associated to the ground state of an interacting Bose gas. Solving the equation yields a relation between the density $ρ$ of the gas and the energy per particle. A Gaussian refinement of the Lieb-Robinson bound
Abstract: This paper has been withdrawn by the authors because of an error in the proof. We can, however, prove a weaker spatial fall-off that is still superlinear, namely exp[-x log x].

Realization of stripes and slabs in two and three dimensions
Abstract: We consider Ising models in two and three dimensions with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interactions and long range, power law decaying, antiferromagnetic interactions. If the strength of the ferromagnetic coupling J is larger than a critical value J_c, then the ground state is homogeneous and ferromagnetic. As the critical value is approached from smaller values of J, it is believed that the gro… ▽ More

The entropy concept for non-equilibrium states
Abstract: In earlier work we presented a foundation for the Second Law of Classical Thermodynamics in terms of the Entropy Principle. More precisely, we provided an empirically accessible axiomatic derivation of an entropy function defined on all equilibrium states of all systems that has the appropriate additivity and scaling properties and whose increase is a necessary and sufficient condition for an adia… ▽ More

Formation of stripes and slabs near the ferromagnetic transition
Abstract: We consider Ising models in d=2 and d=3 dimensions with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic and long-range antiferromagnetic interactions, the latter decaying as (distance)^(-p), p>2d, at large distances. If the strength J of the ferromagnetic interaction is larger than a critical value J_c, then the ground state is homogeneous. It has been conjectured that when J is smaller than but close to J_c the g… ▽ More

Comments: 23 pages, 2 figures. We discovered that our analysis works in 3D as well as in 2D. We revised the paper and the title to reflect this. Our 2D stripes become 3D slabs. Some references added

Equivalence of two definitions of the effective mass of a polaron
Abstract: Two definitions of the effective mass of a particle interacting with a quantum field, such as a polaron, are considered and shown to be equal in models similar to the Froehlich polaron model. These are: 1. the mass defined by the low momentum energy $E(P) \approx E(0)+P^2/2M$ of the translation invariant system constrained to have momentum $P$ and 2. the mass $M$ of a simple particle in an arbitra… ▽ More

Upper bounds on mixing rates
Abstract: We prove upper bounds on the rate, called "mixing rate", at which the von Neumann entropy of the expected density operator of a given ensemble of states changes under non-local unitary evolution. For an ensemble consisting of two states, with probabilities of p and 1-p, we prove that the mixing rate is bounded above by 4\sqrt{p(1-p)} for any Hamiltonian of norm 1. For a general ensemble of states… ▽ More
