The SrRuO$_3$ layer thickness is kept at 55 unit cells, whereas the PbTiO$_3$ layer is grown to thicknesses of 23, 45 and 90 unit cells. Through a combination of atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy studies, we find that above a certain critical thickness of the ferroelectric layer, the large structural distortions associated with the ferroelastic domains propagate through the top SrRuO$_3$ layer, locally modifying the orientation of the orthorhombic SrRuO$_3$ and creating a modulated structure that extends beyond the ferroelectric layer boundaries.

We study the complex ferroelastic/ferroelectric domain structure in the prototypical ferroelectric PbTiO3 epitaxially strained on (110)o-oriented DyScO3 substrates, using a combination of atomic force microscopy, laboratory and synchrotron x-ray diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. We observe that the anisotropic strain imposed by the orthorhombic substrate creates a large asymmetry in the domain configuration, with domain walls macroscopically aligned along one of the two in-plane directions. We show that the periodicity as a function of film thickness deviates from the Kittel law. As the ferroelectric film thickness increases, we find that the domain configuration evolves from flux-closure to a/c-phase, with a larger scale arrangement of domains into superdomains.

Ferroelectrics are technologically important, with wide application in micromechanical systems, nonlinear optics, and information storage. Recent discoveries of exotic polarisation textures in these materials, which can strongly influence their properties, have brought to the forefront questions about the nature of their domain walls -- long believed to be primarily Ising, with locally null polarisation. Here, combining three complementary techniques -- second harmonic generation microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy - to cover all the relevant lengthscales, we reveal the Néel character (non-Ising polarisation oriented perpendicular to the wall) of 180° domain walls in c-phase tetragonal ferroelectric lead titanate epitaxial thin films, for both artificial and intrinsic domains at room temperature. Furthermore, we show that variations in the domain density -- detected both optically and via local piezoresponse, then quantified by radial autocorrelation analysis -- can give us insight into the underlying defect potential present in these materials.

Artificially induced asymmetric tribological properties of ferroelectrics offer an alternative route to visualize and control ferroelectric domains. Here, we observe the switchable friction and wear behavior of ferroelectrics using a nanoscale scanning probe where down domains having lower friction coefficient than up domains can be used as smart masks as they show slower wear rate than up domains. This asymmetry is enabled by flexoelectrically coupled polarization in the up and down domains under a sufficiently high contact force. Moreover, we determine that this polarization-sensitive tribological asymmetry is universal across ferroelectrics with different chemical composition and crystalline symmetry. Finally, using this switchable tribology and multi-pass patterning with a domain-based dynamic smart mask, we demonstrate three-dimensional nanostructuring exploiting the asymmetric wear rates of up and down domains, which can, furthermore, be scaled up to technologically relevant (mm-cm) size. These findings establish that ferroelectrics are electrically tunable tribological materials at the nanoscale for versatile applications.

The transition temperature $T_\textrm{c}$ of unconventional superconductivity is often tunable. For a monolayer of FeSe, for example, the sweet spot is uniquely bound to titanium-oxide substrates. By contrast for La$_{2-\mathrm{x}}$Sr$_\mathrm{x}$CuO$_4$ thin films, such substrates are sub-optimal and the highest $T_\textrm{c}$ is instead obtained using LaSrAlO$_4$. An outstanding challenge is thus to understand the optimal conditions for superconductivity in thin films: which microscopic parameters drive the change in $T_\mathrm{c}$ and how can we tune them? Here we demonstrate, by a combination of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy, how the Coulomb and magnetic-exchange interaction of La$_2$CuO$_4$ thin films can be enhanced by compressive strain. Our experiments and theoretical calculations establish that the substrate producing the largest $T_\textrm{c}$ under do** also generates the largest nearest neighbour hop** integral, Coulomb and magnetic-exchange interaction. We hence suggest optimising the parent Mott state as a strategy for enhancing the superconducting transition temperature in cuprates.

The screening efficiency of a metal-ferroelectric interface plays a critical role in determining the polarization stability and hence the functional properties of ferroelectric thin films. Imperfect screening leads to strong depolarization fields that reduce the spontaneous polarization or drive the formation of ferroelectric domains. We demonstrate that by modifying the screening at the metal-ferroelectric interface through insertion of ultrathin dielectric spacers, the strength of the depolarization field can be tuned and thus used to control the formation of nanoscale domains. Using piezoresponse force microscopy, we follow the evolution of the domain configurations as well as polarization stability as a function of depolarization field strength.

Going down to the limit of ultrathin films holds promise for a new generation of devices such as ferroelectric tunnel junctions or resistive memories. However, these length scales also make the devices sensitive to parasitic effects related to miniaturization, and a better understanding of what happens as size is reduced is of practical importance for the future development of these devices.
As the experimental advances in materials preparation and characterization have come together with great progress in theoretical modeling of ferroelectrics, both theorists and experimentalists can finally probe the same length and time scales. This allows realtime feedback between theory and experiment, with new discoveries now routinely made both in the laboratory and on the computer. Throughout this chapter, we will highlight the recent advances in density functional theory based modeling and the role it played in our understanding of ultrathin ferroelectrics. We will begin with a brief introduction to ferroelectricity and ferroelectric oxides, followed by an overview of the major theoretical developments. We will then discuss some of the subtleties of ferroelectricity in perovskite oxides, before turning our attention to the main subject of the chapter -- ferroelectricity in ultrathin films. We will discuss in detail the influence of the mechanical, electrical and chemical boundary conditions on the stability of the polar state in a parallel plate capacitor geometry, introducing the notion of depolarization fields that tend to destabilize ferroelectricity. We will look at other ways in which a thin ferroelectric can preserve its polar state, focusing on ferroelectric domains and domain walls. Finally, we will briefly discuss artificially layered ferroelectrics and the potential they hold as tailor-made materials for electronic applications.

The local structural distortions in polydomain ferroelectric PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are investigated by means of high spatial and energy resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with high angle annular dark field imaging. Local structural variations across the interfaces have been identified with unit cell resolution through the analysis of the energy loss near edge structure of the Ti-L2,3 and O-K edges. Ab-initio and multiplet calculations of the Ti-L2,3 edges provide unambiguous evidence for an inhomogeneous polarization profile associated with the observed structural distortions across the superlattice.

The film thickness ranges from 480 down to 28 A (7 unit cells). The evolution of the film tetragonality c/a, studied using high resolution x-ray diffraction measurements, shows first a decrease of c/a with decreasing film thickness followed by a recovery of c/a at small thicknesses. This recovery is accompanied by a change from a monodomain to a polydomain configuration of the polarization, as directly demonstrated by piezoresponse atomic force microscopy measurements.

Artificial PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices were constructed using off-axis RF magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction and piezoelectric atomic force microscopy were used to study the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization as the ratio of PbTiO$_{3}$ to SrTiO$_{3}$ was changed. For PbTiO$_{3}$ layer thicknesses larger than the 3-unit cells SrTiO$_{3}$ thickness used in the structure, the polarization is found to be reduced as the PbTiO$_{3}$ thickness is decreased. This observation confirms the primary role of the depolarization field in the polarization reduction in thin films. For the samples with ratios of PbTiO$_{3}$ to SrTiO$_{3}$ of less than one a surprising recovery of ferroelectricity that cannot be explained by electrostatic considerations was observed.

The evolution of tetragonality with thickness has been probed in epitaxial c-axis oriented PbTiO3 films with thicknesses ranging from 500 down to 24 Angstroms. High resolution x-ray pointed out a systematic decrease of the c-axis lattice parameter with decreasing film thickness below 200 Angstroms. Using a first-principles model Hamiltonian approach, the decrease in tetragonality is related to a reduction of the polarization attributed to the presence of a residual unscreened depolarizing field. It is shown that films below 50 Angstroms display a significantly reduced polarization but still remain ferroelectric.
