Optical control of correlated electronic states promises unprecedented tunability of novel functional materials. Tailored optical excitations can steer a system along non-equilibrium pathways to metastable states with specific structural or electronic properties. A much-desired feature is the reproducible and ultrafast switching to functional states. The light-induced hidden state of 1T-TaS$_{2}$, with its strongly enhanced conductivity and exceptionally long lifetime, represents a unique model system for studying the switching of correlated electronic states using femtosecond optical stimuli. However, despite intense investigation, the switching mechanism and the structural origins of the distinctive electronic properties of the hidden state have not been fully uncovered. Here, we use surface-sensitive electron diffraction in combination with a femtosecond optical quench to reveal coexistent charge-density wave chiralities as a new structural feature of the hidden state. We find that a single-pulse optical quench produces a state with long-range structural order and different weights of the two chiral enantiomorphs of the charge-density wave. Harnessing a double-pulse optical quench, we trace the origin of the mixed chirality to the transient electronic excitation of the host crystal. The coexistent long-range-order of both chiralities suggests the presence of extended heterochiral charge-density wave interfaces, which results in a higher-level, fractal-type moiré superstructure. Density functional theory simulations for such a charge-density wave moiré superstructure reveal multiple flat bands, Dirac cones, and a kagome electronic subsystem around the Fermi energy. Our findings shed light on novel electronic properties gained by chiral interface engineering, and create avenues for light-induced moiré superstructures in quasi-two-dimensional materials.

Modern electron storage rings produce bright X-rays via spontaneous synchrotron emission, which is useful for a variety of scientific applications. The X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) has the potential to amplify this output, both in terms of peak power and photon coherence. However, even current 4th generation storage rings (4GSRs) lack the requisite electron beam brightness to drive the XFELO due to its electron energy spread. The transverse gradient undulator (TGU) can overcome this issue, thus providing a practical means to couple the 4GSR to the XFELO. In this study, we first examine the theoretical basis of the TGU interaction by deriving the 3D TGU gain formula in the low gain approximation. Then, we perform an optimization study of the gain formula in order to determine optimal beam and machine parameters. Finally, we construct a hypothetical storage ring TGU-XFELO based on near-optimal parameters and report on its projected performance using multi-stage numerical simulation. We also discuss potential implementation challenges associated with the ring-FEL coupling.

The development of Si-compatible active photonic devices is a high priority in computer and modern electronics industry. Ge is compatible with Si and is a promising light emission material. Nearly all Ge-on-Si materials reported so far were grown using toxic precursor gases. Here we demonstrate the creation of Ge films on Si substrates through physical vapor deposition of toxin-free solid Ge sources. Structural characterization indicates that a high tensile strain is introduced in the Ge film during the deposition process. We attribute the presence of such a tensile strain to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between Si and Ge. A Ge peak, centered at ~2100 nm, is evident in the photoluminescence spectra of these materials, which might result from direct band gap photoluminescence alone, or from superposition of direct band gap and indirect band gap photoluminescence. These Ge-on-Si materials are therefore promising in light emission applications.

Transverse beam echoes can be excited with a single dipole kick followed by a single quadrupole kick. They have been used to measure diffusion in hadron beams and have other diagnostic capabilities. Here we develop theories of the transverse echo nonlinear in both the dipole and quadrupole kick strengths. The theories predict the maximum echo amplitudes and the optimum strength parameters. We find that the echo amplitude increases with smaller beam emittance and the asymptotic echo amplitude can exceed half the initial dipole kick amplitude. We show that multiple echoes can be observed provided the dipole kick is large enough. The spectrum of the echo pulse can be used to determine the nonlinear detuning parameter with small amplitude dipole kicks. Simulations are performed to check the theoretical predictions. In the useful ranges of dipole and quadrupole strengths, they are shown to be in reasonable agreement.

We present the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the single crystals of YbMgGaO$_4$, which was recently argued to be a promising candidate for quantum spin liquid (QSL). In the zero magnetic field, a large magnetic contribution of specific heat is observed, and exhibits a power-law temperature dependence ($C_m \sim T^{0.74}$). On the contrary, we do not observed any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from magnetic excitations. In magnetic fields $H \ge$ 6 T, the exponential $T$-dependence of $C_m$ and the enhanced thermal conductivity indicate a magnon gap of the fully-polarized state. The absence of magnetic thermal conductivity at the zero field in this QSL candidate puts a strong constraint on the theories of its ground state.

We report the fabrication and characterization of a gate-defined double quantum dot formed in a Si/SiGe nanomembrane. In the past, all gate-defined quantum dots in Si/SiGe heterostructures were formed on top of strain-graded virtual substrates. The strain grading process necessarily introduces misfit dislocations into a heterostructure, and these defects introduce lateral strain inhomogeneities, mosaic tilt, and threading dislocations. The use of a SiGe nanomembrane as the virtual substrate enables the strain relaxation to be entirely elastic, eliminating the need for misfit dislocations. However, in this approach the formation of the heterostructure is more complicated, involving two separate epitaxial growth procedures separated by a wet-transfer process that results in a buried non-epitaxial interface 625 nm from the quantum dot. We demonstrate that in spite of this buried interface in close proximity to the device, a double quantum dot can be formed that is controllable enough to enable tuning of the inter-dot tunnel coupling, the identification of spin states, and the measurement of a singlet-to-triplet transition as a function of an applied magnetic field.

Intrinsic carrier transport properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are probed by two parallel methods on the same individual tubes: the contactless dielectric force microscopy (DFM) technique and the conventional field-effect transistor (FET) method. The dielectric responses of SWNTs are strongly correlated with electronic transport of the corresponding FETs. The DC bias voltage in DFM plays a role analogous to the gate voltage in FET. A microscopic model based on the general continuity equation and numerical simulation is built to reveal the link between intrinsic properties such as carrier concentration and mobility and the macroscopic observable, i.e. dielectric responses, in DFM experiments. Local transport barriers in nanotubes, which influence the device transport behaviors, are also detected with nanometer scale resolution.

We present THz range optical conductivity data of a thin film of the near quantum critical heavy fermion compound CeFe$_2$Ge$_2$. Our complex conductivity measurements find a deviation from conventional Drude-like transport in a temperature range previously reported to exhibit unconventional behavior. We calculate the frequency dependent effective mass and scattering rate using an extended Drude model analysis. We find the inelastic scattering rate can be described by a temperature dependent power-law $ω^{n(T)}$ where $n(T)$ approaches $\sim1.0 \pm 0.2$ at 1.5 K. This is compared to the $ρ\sim T^{1.5}$ behavior claimed in dc resistivity data and the $ρ\sim T^{2}$ expected from Fermi-liquid theory. In addition to a low temperature mass renormalization, we find an anomalous mass renormalization that persists to high temperature. We attribute this to a Hund's coupling in the Fe states in a manner similar to that recently proposed in the ferro-pnictides. CeFe$_2$Ge$_2$ appears to be a very interesting system where one may study the interplay between the usual $4f$ lattice Kondo effect and this Hund's enhanced Kondo effect in the $3d$ states.

We have discovered that, using pulse laser deposition (PLD) method, the a- and b-axis of the FeSe0.3Te0.7 film deposited on Ar-ion-milled Magnesium Oxide (MgO) substrate are rotated 45 degree with respect to those of MgO, while the a- and b-axis of the film grown on pristine MgO substrate are parallel to those of MgO. With photolithography and this technique, we can prepare FeSe0.3Te0.7 film with two kinds of orientations on the same MgO substrate, and the connection between them forms a ramp at an angle about 25 degree to the substrate plane. In the planar region with either 0 degree or 45 degree orientation, we have observed tunneling spectra with a superconducting gap about 5 meV and 1.78 meV respectively. However, a much larger gap about 18 meV has been observed in the ramp region. Furthermore, we have also observed a small zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) inside the large gap at T = 4.3K. The ZBCP becomes smaller and disappear with increasing temperature to 7 K. The possible causes of such large gap and the ZBCP will be discussed.

A large zero bias conductance peak has always been observed in the conductance spectra of several batches of junctions. In addition, we have also found several gap-like features. Using the extended BTK theory with the currently favored nodeless S+- wave symmetry, our conductance spectrum can be reproduced quite well in the low bias range with Δ1 = 4 meV, and Δ2 = 6 meV at 2 K. However the experimental conductance spectrum is substantially below the calculated one in the high bias range. Furthermore, there is a conductance minimum at about 20 meV, which may be the reason for the discrepancy.

Andreev conductance involving normal metals and such superconductors does not have a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) except maybe for a very narrow range of a junction-dependent fitting parameter. We have measured differential conductance of the in-plane boundary junctions between Au and superconducting FeSe0.3Te0.7 films. The Au/FeSe0.3Te0.7 ramp-type junctions are fabricated with the bias current direction along the <110> axis of the epitaxial FeSe0.3Te0.7 film. We have always observed a pronounced ZBCP as well as some gap-like features in the conductance spectra of all samples studied, thus our experimental results suggest not the s\pm-wave theory but the possible existence of a nodal point around 45° in at least one of the gaps in FeSe0.3Te0.7 superconductor.

The quantum nature of bulk ensemble NMR quantum computing --the center of recent heated debate, is addressed. Concepts of the mixed state and entanglement are examined, and the data in a 2 qubit liquid NMR quantum computation are analyzed. It is pointed out that the key problem in the current debate is the understanding of entanglement in a mixed state system. The following points are concluded in this Letter: 1)Density matrix describes the "state" of an average particle in an ensemble. It can not describe the state of an individual particle in an ensemble in detail; 2) Entanglement is a property of the wave function of a quantum particle(such as an molecule in a liquid NMR sample). Separability of the density matrix can not be used to measure the entanglement of mixed ensemble; 3)The evolution of states in bulk-ensemble NMR quantum computation is quantum mechanical; 4) The coefficient before the effective pure state density matrix, $ε$, is an measure of the simultaneity of the molecules in an ensemble. It reflects the intensity of the NMR signal and has no significance in quantifying the entanglement in the bulk ensemble NMR system. We conclude that the liquid NMR quantum computation is genuine, not just classical simulations.
