Classical Density Functional Theory: The Local Density Approximation
Abstract: We prove that the lowest free energy of a classical interacting system at temperature $T$ with a prescribed density profile $ρ(x)$ can be approximated by the local free energy $\int f_T(ρ(x))dx$, provided that $ρ$ varies slowly over sufficiently large length scales. A quantitative error on the difference is provided in terms of the gradient of the density. Here $f_T$ is the free energy per unit vo… ▽ More

Which nuclear shape generates the strongest attraction on a relativistic electron? An open problem in relativistic quantum mechanics
Abstract: In this article we formulate several conjectures concerning the lowest eigenvalue of a Dirac operator with an external electrostatic potential. The latter describes a relativistic quantum electron moving in the field of some (pointwise or extended) nuclei. The main question we ask is whether the eigenvalue is minimal when the nuclear charge is concentrated at one single point. This well-known prop… ▽ More

Abstract: We prove that nonlinear Gibbs measures can be obtained from the corresponding many-body, grand-canonical, quantum Gibbs states, in a mean-field limit where the temperature T diverges and the interaction behaves as 1/T. We proceed by characterizing the interacting Gibbs state as minimizing a functional counting the free-energy relatively to the non-interacting case. We then perform an infinite-dime… ▽ More

Improved Lieb-Oxford exchange-correlation inequality with gradient correction
Abstract: We prove a Lieb-Oxford-type inequality on the indirect part of the Coulomb energy of a general many-particle quantum state, with a lower constant than the original statement but involving an additional gradient correction. The result is similar to a recent inequality of Benguria, Bley and Loss, except that the correction term is purely local, which is more usual in density functional theory. In an… ▽ More

The mean-field approximation and the non-linear Schrödinger functional for trapped Bose gases
Abstract: We study the ground state of a trapped Bose gas, starting from the full many-body Schr{ö}dinger Hamiltonian, and derive the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger energy functional in the limit of large particle number, when the interaction potential converges slowly to a Dirac delta function. Our method is based on quantitative estimates on the discrepancy between the full many-body energy and its mean-field ap… ▽ More

Uniqueness and non-degeneracy for a nuclear nonlinear Schrödinger equation
Abstract: We prove the uniqueness and non-degeneracy of positive solutions to a cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type equation that describes nucleons. The main difficulty stems from the fact that the mass depends on the solution itself. As an application, we construct solutions to the $σ$--$ω$ model, which consists of one Dirac equation coupled to two Klein-Gordon equations (one focusing and one defocusin… ▽ More

Remarks on the quantum de Finetti theorem for bosonic systems
Abstract: The quantum de Finetti theorem asserts that the k-body density matrices of a N-body bosonic state approach a convex combination of Hartree states (pure tensor powers) when N is large and k fixed. In this note we review a construction due to Christandl, Mitchison, König and Renner valid for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, which gives a quantitative version of the theorem. We first propose a vari… ▽ More

The Hartree equation for infinitely many particles. II. Dispersion and scattering in 2D
Abstract: We consider the nonlinear Hartree equation for an interacting gas containing infinitely many particles and we investigate the large-time stability of the stationary states of the form $f(-Δ)$, describing an homogeneous Fermi gas. Under suitable assumptions on the interaction potential and on the momentum distribution $f$, we prove that the stationary state is asymptotically stable in dimension 2.… ▽ More
