We analyzed the CI lines associated with the damped Ly-alpha system observed at zabs = 1.15 in the spectrum of HE 0515-4414 to derive the 12C/13C ratio. The spectrum was obtained by means of the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The obtained lower limit 12C/13C > 80 (2sigma C.L.) shows for the first time that the abundance of 13C in the extragalactic intervening clouds is very low. This rules out a significant contribution from intermediate-mass stars to the chemical evolution of matter sampled by this line of sight. The estimated low amount of 13C is in agreement with low abundances of nitrogen observed in damped Ly-alpha systems - the element produced in the same nuclear cycles and from about the same stars as 13C.

Verification of theoretical predictions of an oscillating behavior of the fine-structure constant, alpha, with cosmic time requires high precision measurements at individual redshifts, while in earlier studies the mean Delta alpha/alpha values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met via the Single Ion Differential alpha Measurement (SIDAM) procedure. We apply SIDAM to the FeII lines associated with the damped Ly-alpha system observed at z=1.15 in the spectrum of HE0515-4414. The weighted mean calculated on base of carefully selected 34 FeII pairs is <Delta alpha/alpha>=(-0.07+/-0.84)10^{-6}. The precision of this estimate represents the absolute improvement with respect to what has been done in the measurements of Delta alpha/alpha.

Verification of theoretical predictions of an oscillating behavior of the fine-structure constant alpha with cosmic time requires high precision Delta alpha/alpha measurements at individual redshifts, while in earlier studies the mean Delta alpha/alpha values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met via the single ion differential alpha measurement (SIDAM) procedure proposed in Levshakov et al. (2005). We apply the SIDAM to the FeII lines associated with the damped Ly-alpha system observed at z=1.15 in the spectrum of HE0515-4414. The weighted mean <Delta alpha/alpha> calculated on base of carefully selected 34 FeII pairs {1608,X} (X = 2344, 2374, and 2586 A) is <Delta alpha/alpha> = (-0.07+/-0.84) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). The precision of this estimate improves by a factor 2 the previous one reported for the same system by Quast et al. (2004). The obtained result represents an absolute improvement with respect to what has been done in the measurements of Delta alpha/alpha.

We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 <= z <= 1.87. Among them, six systems with zabs = 1.46-1.8 exhibit a sufficient number of lines of different ionic transitions to estimate the shape of the ionizing radiation field in the range 1 Ryd < E < 10 Ryd. All recovered UV ionizing spectra are characterized by the enhanced intensity at E > 3 Ryd compared to the model spectrum of Haardt and Madau (1996). This is in line with the observational evidence of a deficiency of strong Ly-alpha absorbers with N(HI) > 10^{15} cm^{-2}, at z < 2. The UV background shows significant local variations: the spectral shape estimated at z = 1.59 differs from that obtained at z = 1.81 and 1.73. A possible cause of these variations is the presence of a QSO/AGN at z ~= 1.54-1.59 close to the line of sight. No features favoring the input of stellar radiation to the ionizing background are detected, limiting the escape fraction of the galactic UV photons to f_esc < 0.05.

The procedure is based on the response surface methodology from the theory of experimental design. The shape of the recovered UV background at z~3 shows a significant intensity decrease between 3 and 4 Ryd compared to the metagalactic spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996). This decrease is interpreted as produced by HeII Gunn-Peterson effect. There are no features indicating a contribution from galaxies to the UV background which is therefore dominated by QSOs at z~3.

We propose a new methodology for probing the cosmological variability of alpha from pairs of FeII lines (SIDAM, single ion differential alpha measurement) observed in individual exposures from a high resolution spectrograph. By this we avoid the influence of the spectral shifts due to (i) ionization inhomogeneities in the absorbers and (ii) non-zero offsets between different exposures. Applied to the FeII lines of the metal absorption line system at zabs = 1.839 in the spectrum of Q1101-264 obtained by means of the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), SIDAM provides da/a = (2.4+/-3.8) 10^{-6}. The zabs = 1.15 FeII system toward HE0515-4414 has been re-analyzed by this method thus obtaining for the combined sample da/a = (0.4+/-1.5) 10^{-6}. These values are shifted with respect to the Keck/HIRES mean da/a = (-5.7+/-1.1) 10^{-6} (Murphy et al. 2004) at very high confidence level (95%). The fundamental photon noise limitation in the da/a measurement with the VLT/UVES is discussed to figure the prospects for future observations. It is suggested that with a spectrograph of 10 times the UVES dispersion coupled to a 100m class telescope the present Oklo level (da/a >= 4.5 10^{-8}) can be achieved along cosmological distances with differential measurements of da/a.

Our analysis results in the most stringent bounds hitherto infered from QSO absorption lines. Our results support the null hypothesis of a non-varying fine-structure constant at a significance level of 91 percent, whereas the support for the results presented in former MM studies indicating a variation in the fine-structure constant is 12 percent.

We present a modified MM method to set an upper limit on Delta alpha/alpha from a homogeneous sample of FeII lines identified in the up-to-date best quality VLT/UVES spectrum of HE 0515-4414. Our result is Delta alpha/alpha = (1.1+/-1.1) 10^{-5} at z = 1.149. Theoretical models of the fundamental physical interactions predict that the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mu = m_p/m_e) may relate to the shift in Delta alpha/alpha as Delta mu/mu = R Delta alpha/alpha. We use VLT/UVES high-resolution observations of molecular hydrogen H2 ultraviolet absorption lines at z = 3.025 toward Q 0347-3818 to bound the value of R. The obtained constraints on Delta ln mu = (2.1+/-3.6) 10^{-5} and on Delta ln alpha = (1.1+/-1.1) 10^{-5} rule out vary large values of |R| > 6.

More than 30 absorption features in the Lyman band system of H2 are identified in the UV spectrum of this quasar obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The H2-bearing cloud shows a total H2 column density N(H2)=(8.7^{+8.7}_-{4.0}) 10^16 cm^-2, and a fractional molecular abundance f(H2)=(2.3^{+2.3}_{-1.1}) 10^-3 derived from the H2 lines arising from the J=0-5 rotational levels of the ground electronic vibrational state. The estimated rate of photodissociation at the cloud edge I_0<=1.8 10^{-8} s^-1 is much higher than the mean Galactic disk value, I_MW~=5.5 10^{-11} s^-1. This may indicate an enhanced star-formation activity in the z=1.15 system as compared with molecular clouds at z~=3 where I~=I_MW. We also find a tentative evidence that the formation rate coefficient of H2 upon grain surfaces at z=1.15 is a factor of 10 larger than a canonical Milky Way value, R_MW~=3 10^-17 cm^3 s^-1. The relative dust-to-gas ratio estimated from the [Cr/Zn] ratio is equal to k=0.89+/-0.19 (in units of the mean Galactic disk value), which is in good agreement with a high molecular fraction in this system. The estimated line-of-sight size of L~=0.25 pc may imply that the H2 is confined within small and dense filaments embedded in a more rarefied gas giving rise to the z=1.15 sub-damped Ly-alpha absorber.

We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of five OVI systems from the spectrum of the bright quasar HE 0515-4414 (z_e = 1.71). The associated system at z_a = 1.697 with the neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)= 4.4 10^{13} cm^{-2} shows pronounced absorption from highly ionized transitions of CIII, CIV, NV, OVI, SiIV, and probably SVI. We found that only a power law type ionizing spectrum (J_nu propto nu^{-1.5}) is consistent with the observed sample of the line profiles, i.e. the system is definitely intrinsic. The relative metal abundances give almost the solar pattern and the metallicity of about 5 times solar. The system originates in a thin shell of the line-of-sight thickness L <= 16 pc. Two OVI systems at z_a = 1.674 ([C/H] = -1.6) and 1.602 ([O/H] = -1.1), arising in intervening halos, have linear sizes of L = 3-14 kpc and 17 kpc, respectively. Absorption systems at z_a = 1.385 ([C/H] = -0.3, L = 1.7-2.5 kpc) and z_a = 1.667 ([C/H] = -0.5, L = 1 kpc) exhibit characteristics very similar to that observed in metal-enriched high velocity clouds in the Milky Way.These systems are probably embedded in extremely metal-poor halos with [C/H] < -2.4 (z_a = 1.667) and [C/H] < -3.7 (z_a = 1.385). We also found two additional extremely metal-poor Ly-alpha systems at z_a = 1.500 and 1.681 with, respectively, N(HI) = 1.7 10^{15} and 1.8 10^{15} cm^{-2} and [C/H] < -4.0 and <-3.0, - an indication that the distribution of metals in the metagalactic medium is utterly patchy. Our results show that the ionization states in the analyzed OVI absorbers, ranging from z = 1.4 to 1.7, can be maintained by photoionization only and that the fraction of the shock-heated hot gas with temperature T > 10^5 K is negligible in these systems.

We present 4 new measurements of nitrogen abundances and one upper limit in damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) obtained by means of high resolution (FWHM \~ 7 km/s) UVES/VLT spectra. In addition to these measurements we have compiled data from all DLAs with measurements of nitrogen and alpha-capture elements (O, S or Si) available in the literature, including all HIRES/Keck and UVES/VLT data for a total of 33 systems, i.e. the largest sample investigated so far. We find that [N/alpha] ratios are distributed in two groups: 75% of the DLAs show a mean value of [N/alpha] = -0.87 with a scatter of 0.16 dex, while the remaining 25% shows ratios clustered at [N/alpha] = -1.45 with an even lower dispersion of 0.05 dex. The high [N/alpha] plateau is consistent with the one observed in metal-poor HII regions of blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies ([N/alpha] = -0.73 +/- 0.13), while the [N/alpha] ~ -1.5 values are the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site. These low [N/alpha] ratios are real and not due to ionization effects. They provide a crucial evidence against the primary production of N by massive stars as responsible for the plateau at -0.9/-0.7 dex observed in DLAs and BCD galaxies. The transition between the low-N ([N/alpha] ~ -1.5) and high-N ([N/alpha] ~ -0.9) DLAs occurs at a nitrogen abundance of [N/H] ~ -2.8, suggesting that the separation may result from some peculiarity of the nitrogen enrichment history. The [N/alpha] ~ -1.5 values and their low dispersion are consistent with a modest production of primary N in massive stars; however, due to the limited sample, specially for the low-N DLAs, we cannot exclude a primary origin in intermediate mass stars as responsible for the low N abundances observed.

I review our recent results concerning the metal abundances in quasar absorption-line spectra obtained with the UVES/VLT, HIRES/ KECK, and STIS/HST spectrographs. The analysis is based on the Monte Carlo inversion procedure aimed at the restoring the physical parameters and the 1D distributions of the velocity and density fields in quasar absorbers. A functional dependence of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion, sigma_v, on the absorber linear size, L, was found which may indicate that the metal absorbers are associated with virialized systems like galaxies or their halos. A metal content enhancement (up to Z = 4Z_solar) was observed in small-size absorbers (L < 0.4 kpc), whereas decreasing metal abundances were found in systems with increasing L.The lowest metallicity ([C/H] = -3.0) was detected in the z = 2.917 Lymna-limit system (LLS) with N(HI) = 3.2 10^{17} cm^{-2} and L = 140 kpc. The relative abundance ratio of [Si/C] = 0.35, measured in this LLS, seems to indicate that the initial mass function for the stellar population, produced the observed metallicity pattern, was constrained to intermediate masses, M_up < 25M_solar.

We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of the Lyman limit system observed at z = 2.917 in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar HE 0940-1050. Metal absorption lines of carbon and silicon in three ionization stages and numerous atomic hydrogen lines have been analyzed simultaneously. It is found that in order to match the observations, the shape of the ultraviolet background ionizing spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996) should be modified: a spectrum with a higher intensity of the emission feature at 3 Ryd is required. It is also found that synthetic galactic spectra (or different mixtures of them with power law spectra) cannot reproduce the observations, indicating that the stellar contribution to the ionizing background is negligible at z ~= 3. For the first time a very low carbon abundance of [C/H] = -2.93+/-0.13 and the abundance ratio [Si/C] = 0.35+/-0.15 are directly measured in the Lyman limit system with N(H I) = 3.2 10^{17} cm^{-2}. If the absorber at z = 2.917 provides an example of a pristine gas enriched by the nucleosynthetic products of early generations of stars, then the measured value of [Si/C] seems to indicate that the initial mass functions for these stellar populations are constrained to intermediate masses, M_up <= 25M_solar.

Combined with the results from a previous work, the analyzed LLSs show that they are a heterogeneous population originating in different environments. A functional dependence of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v on the absorber size L is confirmed: the majority of the analyzed systems follow the scaling relation sigma_v ~ (N_H L)^{0.3} (with N_H being the total gas column density). This means that most absorbers may be related to virialized systems like galaxies or their halos. Previously noted enhancement of the metal content in small size systems is also confirmed: metallicities of Z ~ (1/3-1/2)Z_solar are found in systems with L < 0.4 kpc, whereas we observe much lower metal abundances in systems with larger linear sizes. For the first time in LLSs, a pronounced [alpha-element/iron-peak] enrichment is revealed: the absorber at z = 2.21 shows [O/Fe] = 0.65+/-0.11, [Si/Fe] = 0.51+/-0.11, and [Mg/Fe] = 0.38+/-0.11. Several absorption systems exhibit characteristics which are very similar to that observed in high-velocity clouds in the Milky Way and may be considered as high-redshift counterparts of Galactic HVCs.

The metal line profiles of different ions observed in high HI column density systems [N(HI) > 10^{16} cm^{-2}] in quasar spectra can be used to constrain the ionization structure and kinematic characteristics of the absorbers. For these purposes, a modified Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI) procedure was applied to the study of three absorption systems in the spectrum of the HDF-South quasar J2233-606 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. The MCI does not confirm variations of metal abundances within separate systems which were discussed in the literature. Instead, we found that an assumption of a homogeneous metal content and a unique photoionizing background is sufficient to describe the observed complex metal profiles. It was also found that the linear size L and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v measured within the absorbers obey a scaling relation, namely, sigma_v increases with increasing L, and that metal abundance is inversely proportional to the linear size of the system: the highest metallicity was measured in the system with the smallest L.

This value is consistent with SBBN if the baryon-to-photon ratio, eta, lies within the range 4.4 10^{-10} <= eta <= 5.3 10^{-10}, implying Omega_b h^2_{100} = 0.018 +/- 0.002 (1 sigma c.l.). The population of the ground state rotational levels of H2 from J = 0 to 5 revealed a Galactic-type UV radiation field in the H2-bearing cloud ruling out UV pum** as an important mechanism for CII. Accounting for two other important excitation mechanisms such as collisions and FIR photon absorption, we were able to measure for the first time the temperature of the cosmic background radiation at z > 3, T_{CMBR} = 12.1^{+1.7}_{-3.2} K, from the analysis of the CII fine-structure lines. This result supports the value of T_{CMBR} = 10.968 +/- 0.004 K predicted at z = 3.025 by the hot Big Bang cosmology.

The estimated 1 sigma uncertainty interval of the |Delta mu/mu_0| ratio of about 0.004% implies that since the time when the H2 spectrum was formed at z = 3.025, mu_0 has not changed by more than a few thousands of a percent.

We show that the difference between the Ar and Si relative abundance ratio derived from FUSE absorption spectra and from the HII regions of I Zw 18 is a consequence of the microturbulent analysis applied to the absorption spectra. FUSE observations were performed with a large entrance aperture which fully covered the galaxy. This means that the observed profiles are averaged over the full body of I Zw 18, implying that large-scale velocity fields influence the absorption - line profiles. Taking this into account, we show that the absorption spectra are consistent with the same metal abundances as those derived from the HII regions. It follows that no significant ionization correction as suggested by Izotov and collaborators to describe metal contents in damped Ly-alpha systems (DLA) is required to model abundances in the neutral gas of I Zw 18 (a local DLA system). Using a mesoturbulent approach and applying the generalized radiative transfer equation to the ArI1048 and SiII1020 lines observed by Vidal-Madjar et al., we found that the profiles may be reproduced with log (Ar/Si) ~= - 0.8 and N(SiII) ~= 4 10^{15} cm^{-2}.

So far, this is the first measurement of ArI, and the second of PII, ever performed in damped galaxies and in high redshift objects. This DLA is well known for having one of the lowest metal abundances and dust content, and the lowest fractional abundance of molecular hydrogen H_2. The measured Ar abundance is [Ar/H] = - 1.91 (+/- 0.09) which is equal to the abundances of the other alpha-chain elements (O, S and Si). The similarity of the Ar abundance with the other alpha-chain elements implies the absence of significant photoionization by either UV background or stellar sources along the sightline throughout the damped Ly_alpha system. Both log(Ar/O) and log(Ar/S) ratios are found close to those measured in the extragalactic HII regions and in blue compact galaxies where O is more abundant by at least one order of magnitude. This strengthens the universality of the Ar/O and Ar/S ratios and lends support to the existence of a universal IMF. The abundance of the non-refractory element phosphorus [P/H] = - 2.31 (+/- 0.10) confirms the low amount of chemical evolution in the DLA. This is the measurement of P in the most metal-poor material and shows a subsolar [P/Fe] = --0.27 value. The measured ratios [P/Si] = - 0.40 (+/- 0.13) and [P/S] = - 0.33 (+/- 0.13) provide evidence for a mild odd-even effect. Finally, a stringent upper limit to the population of the 3P_1 level in the ground state of OI is derived, which provides a lower limit to the physical dimensions of the zabs = 3.3901 system of L > 7 pc.

The measured H2 fractional abundance of f(H2) ~= 4*10^{-8} is lower than a typical value for Galactic interstellar clouds of high N(HI) column density by a factor of (2-3)*10^6. Since H2 molecules are formed efficiently on dust grains, it implies that the dust condensation in this DLA is negligible, and hence the abundances derived from metal absorption lines are the actual ones. The obtained f(H2) value leads to an estimate of the dust number density of < n_d >_DLA ~= 10^{-3}*< n_d >_ISM, which is consistent with the dust-to-gas ratio k <= 1.6 10^{-3} derived independently from the [Cr/Zn] and [Fe/Zn] ratios.

A new method, based on the simulated annealing algorithm and aimed at the inverse problem in the analysis of intergalactic (interstellar) complex spectra of hydrogen and metal lines, is presented. We consider the process of line formation in clumpy stochastic media accounting for fluctuating velocity and density fields (mesoturbulence). This approach generalizes our previous Reverse Monte Carlo and Entropy-Regularized Minimization methods which were applied to velocity fluctuations only. The method allows one to estimate, from an observed system of spectral lines, both the physical parameters of the absorbing gas and appropriate structures of the velocity and density distributions along the line of sight. The validity of the computational procedure is demonstrated using a series of synthetic spectra that emulate the up-to-date best quality data. HI, CII, SiII, CIV, SiIV, and OVI lines, exhibiting complex profiles, were fitted simultaneously. The adopted physical parameters have been recovered with a sufficiently high accuracy. The results obtained encourage the application of the proposed procedure to the analysis of real observational data.

A very low primordial deuterium abundance of D/H = 1.5 10^{-5} has recently been proposed by Molaro et al. in the Lyman limit system with log(N_HI) = 18.1 cm^{-2} at z_a = 3.514 towards the quasar APM08279+5255. The D/H value was estimated through the standard Voigt fitting procedure utilizing a simple one-component model of the absorbing region. The authors assumed, however, that `a more complex structure for the hydrogen cloud with somewhat ad hoc components would allow a higher D/H'. We have investigated this system using our new Monte Carlo inversion procedure which allows us to recover not only the physical parameters but also the velocity and density distributions along the line of sight. The absorption lines of HI, CII, CIV, SiIII, and SiIV were analyzed simultaneously. The result obtained shows a considerably lower neutral hydrogen column density log(N_HI) = 15.7 cm^{-2}. Hence, the measurement of the deuterium abundance in this system is rather uncertain. We find that the asymmetric blue wing of the hydrogen Ly-alpha absorption is readily explained by HI alone. Thus, up to now, deuterium was detected in only four QSO spectra (Q1937-1009, Q1009+2956, Q0130-4021, and Q1718+4807) and all of them are in concordance with D/H = 4 10^{-5}.

Our method is based on the entropy-regularized minimization (ERM) procedure.
From synthetic spectra we found that the CII and SiII lines can be used to estimate the mean (density weighted) kinetic temperature with a sufficiently high accuracy (of about 10%) in a rather wide range of the ionization parameter, -6 < log U < -2. This is a generalization of a previous result (Levshakov, Takahara and Agafonova 1999) where we did not account for density fluctuations.

Other mesoturbulent calculations of the D-abundances at z = 3.572 towards Q1937--1009 and at z = 0.701 towards Q1718+4807 (the systems showing `low' and possibly `high' D/H values, respectively, in the microturbulent approaches) agree with the present one within the errors of measurements. Thus, the mesoturbulent analysis does not reveal any spatial variations of D/H and supports the standard homogeneous model of big bang nucleosynthesis.

We present a new method for recovering the kinetic temperature of the intervening diffuse gas to an accuracy of 10%. The method is based on the comparison of unsaturated absorption-line profiles of two species with different atomic weights. The species are assumed to have the same temperature and bulk motion within the absorbing region. The computational technique involves the Fourier transform of the absorption profiles and the consequent Entropy-Regularized chi^2-Minimization [ERM] to estimate the model parameters. The procedure is tested using synthetic spectra of CII, SiII and FeII ions. The comparison with the standard Voigt fitting analysis is performed and it is shown that the Voigt deconvolution of the complex absorption-line profiles may result in estimated temperatures which are not physical. We also successfully analyze Keck telescope spectra of CII1334 and SiII1260 lines observed at the redshift z = 3.572 toward the quasar Q1937--1009 by Tytler {\it et al.}.

This result supports homogeneous models of BBN. The obtained D/H ratio and the measurements of high He4 abundance in extra-galactic HII regions [5] and Li7 abundance in metal-poor halo stars [2] are consistent, within the errors, with the predictions of standard BBN for 3.6 <= η_{10} <= 5.4, which corresponds to 0.013 <= Ω_{b}h^2_{100} <= 0.020.

Deuterium abundance re-measurements by Burles and Tytler (1998; hereafter BT) yielded D/H = (3.3 +/- 0.3) 10^{-5} and the robust upper limit D/H < 3.9 10^{-5} from the z_a = 3.572 system toward Q1937-1009. In this new analysis BT adopted multicomponent microturbulent models together with the possibility to vary freely the local continuum level around each HI line to improve the fit. The procedure failed, however, to fit adequately D Ly-beta without recourse to an additional H Ly-alpha contamination at the position of D Ly-beta. We show that this obstacle may be successfully overcome within the framework of the mesoturbulent model accounting (in contrast to the microturbulent approximation) for a correlated structure of the large scale velocity field. Using the same observational data and the original continuum as determined by Tytler et al. (1996), we obtained good fits. The one-component mesoturbulent models provide D/H in the range (3.2 - 4.8) 10^{-5} and the total hydrogen column density N(HI) = (5.6 - 7.0) 10^{17} cm^{-2}. This result is consistent with that found by us from the z_a = 2.504 and z_a = 0.701 systems toward Q1009+2956 and Q1718+4807, respectively. The range for D/H common to all three analyses is D/H = (4.1 - 4.6) 10^{-5}. This value is consistent with standard big bang nucleosynthesis [SBBN] if the baryon-to-photon ratio, η, is in the range 4.2 10^{-10} <= η<= 4.6 10^{-10}, implying 0.0155 <= Ω_b h^2_{100} <= 0.0167.

In particular, we show that the H+D Ly-alpha profile observed at z = 0.7 toward Q1718+4807 is compatible with 4.1*10^{-5} <= D/H <= 4.7*10^{-5}. This result is consistent with our previous D/H determination for the z = 2.504 system toward Q1009+2956 and, thus, supports SBBN.

We show that this discordance may simply be an artifact caused by inadequate analysis ignoring spatial correlations in the velocity field in turbulent media. The generalized procedure (accounting for such correlations) is suggested to reconcile the D/H measurements. An example is presented based on two high-resolution observations of Q1009+2956 (low D/H) [1,2] and Q1718+4807 (high D/H) [8,9]. We show that both observations are compatible with D/H = 4.1 - 4.6 10^{-5}, and thus support SBBN. The estimated mean value <D/H> = 4.4 10^{-5} corresponds to the baryon-to-photon ratio during SBBN eta = 4.4 10^{-10} which yields the present-day baryon density Omega_b h^2 = 0.015.

A new method based on a Reverse Monte Carlo [RMC] technique and aimed at the inverse problem in the analysis of interstellar (intergalactic) absorption lines is presented. The line formation process in chaotic media with a finite correlation length $(l > 0)$ of the stochastic velocity field (mesoturbulence) is considered. This generalizes the standard assumption of completely uncorrelated bulk motions $(l \equiv 0)$ in the microturbulent approximation which is used for the data analysis up-to-now. It is shown that the RMC method allows to estimate from an observed spectrum the proper physical parameters of the absorbing gas and simultaneously an appropriate structure of the velocity field parallel to the line-of-sight. The application to the analysis of the H+D Ly$α$ profile is demonstrated using Burles & Tytler [B&T] data for QSO 1009+2956 where the DI Ly$α$ line is seen at $z_a = 2.504$. The results obtained favor a low D/H ratio in this absorption system, although our upper limit for the hydrogen isotopic ratio of about $4.5\times10^{-5}$ is slightly higher than that of B&T (D/H = $3.0^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \times 10^{-5}$). We also show that the D/H and N(HI) values are, in general, correlated, i.e. the derived D-abundance may be badly dependent on the assumed hydrogen column density. The corresponding confidence regions for an arbitrary and a fixed stochastic velocity field distribution are calculated.

A new method, based on a Reverse Monte Carlo technique and aimed at the inverse problem in the analysis of interstellar (intergalactic) absorption lines is presented. We consider the process of line formation in media with a stochastic velocity field accounting for the effects of a finite correlation length (mesoturbulence). This approach generalizes the standard microturbulent approximation, which is commonly used to model the formation of absorption spectra in turbulent media. The method allows to estimate from an observed spectrum both, the physical parameters of the absorbing gas, and an appropriate structure of the velocity distribution parallel to the line of sight. The procedure is applied to a template H+D Ly-alpha profile which reproduces the Burles and Tytler [BT] spectrum of the quasar Q 1009+2956 with the DI Ly-alpha line seen at the redshift z = 2.504. The results obtained favor a low D/H ratio in this particular absorption system, although the inferred upper limit for the hydrogen isotopic ratio of about 4.6 10^{-5} is slightly higher than that of BT [log (D/H) = -4.60 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.06,i.e. D/H <= 3.47 10^{-5}]. This revision of the BT data in the framework of the mesoturbulent model leads to limits on D/H consistent with standard big bang nucleosynthesis [SBBN] predictions and observational constraints on both extra-galactic 4He mass fraction Y_p (Izotov et al. 1997) and 7Li abundance in the atmospheres of population II (halo) stars (Bonifacio and Molaro 1997). SBBN restricts the common interval of the baryon to photon ratio ηfor which there is concordance between the various abundances to 3.9 10^{-10} <= η<= 5.3 10^{-10}. It implies that 0.014 <= Ω_b h^2 <= 0.020, where h is the Hubble constant in units 100 km/s/Mpc.

We show that spatial correlations in a stochastic large scale velocity field in an otherwise smooth intergalactic medium (homogeneous comoving density) superposed on the general Hubble flow, may cause a `line-like' structure in QSO spectra similar to the population of unsaturated Ly-alpha forest lines which usually are attributed to individual clouds with 10^{11} <= N(HI) <= 5*10^{13} cm^{-2}. Therefore there is no clear observational distinction between a diffuse intergalactic medium and discrete intergalactic clouds. It follows that the HI-density in the diffuse intergalactic medium might be substantially underestimated if it is determined from the observed intensity distribution near the apparent continuum in high resolution spectra of QSOs. Our tentative estimate implies a diffuse neutral hydrogen opacity tau_{GP} = 0.3 at z = 3 and a current baryon density Omega_{IGM} = 0.08$, assuming a Hubble constant H = 70 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}.

By using a Reverse Monte Carlo technique aimed at the inverse problem in the analysis of the H+D Ly-a absorption from QSO spectra we have estimated the physical parameters of the gas and the large-scale line of sight velocity structure towards Q1009+2956 at z = 2.504 (observations by Burles and Tytler, astro-ph/9603070). We show that for a precise evaluation of the column densities, the detailed velocity field structure is to be determined simultaneously. Our study of the z = 2.504 system yields D/H = (3.75 +/- 0.85)*10^{-5} (2sigma) which gives good agreement between the standard BBN predictions and observational constraints on extra-galactic 4He mass fraction and 7Li abundances in the atmospheres of population II (halo) starts. We conclude that the discordance of D/H with the light element abundances discussed in the literature is a consequence of the assumption of microturbulence (i.e. completely uncorrelated bulk motions) in the analysis of line profiles. The generalized model accounting for a finite correlation length leads to the common eta-interval of (3.9-5.3)*10^{-10}, where eta is the baryon to photon ratio.
