Here we present a proof of concept for the application of the Variance of Laplacian (VL) method in quantifying the sharpness of optical solar images. We conducted a comprehensive study using over 65,000 individual solar images acquired on more than 160 days. Each image underwent processing using a VL image processing algorithm, which assigns a 'score' based on the sharpness of the solar disk's edges. We studied the scores obtained from images acquired at different conditions. Our findings demonstrate that the sharpness of the images exhibits daily trends that are closely linked to the altitude of the Sun at the observation site. We observed a significant degradation in image quality only below a certain altitude threshold. Furthermore, we compared airmass formulae from the literature with our sharpness observations and concluded that the degradation could be modeled as an Image Sharpness Function (ISF), which exhibits similarities to airmass variations. In addition to assessing image quality, our method has the potential to evaluate the optical atmospheric conditions during daytime observations. Moreover, this technique can be easily and cost-effectively applied to archival or real-time images of other celestial bodies, such as the Moon, bright planets and defocused stars. Given that ISF is unique to each location and sensitive to sky conditions, the development of an ISF is not only beneficial for routine observation preparation but also essential for long-term site monitoring.

Introduction: The current study investigates the complex association between COVID-19 and the studied districts' socioecology (e.g. internal and external built environment, sociodemographic profiles, etc.) to quantify their contributions to the early outbreaks and epidemic resurgence of COVID-19. Methods: We aligned the analytic model's architecture with the hierarchical structure of the resident's socioecology using a multi-headed hierarchical convolutional neural network to structure the vast array of hierarchically related predictive features representing buildings' internal and external built environments and residents' sociodemographic profiles as model input. COVID-19 cases accumulated in buildings across three adjacent districts in HK, both before and during HK's epidemic resurgence, were modeled. A forward-chaining validation was performed to examine the model's performance in forecasting COVID-19 cases over the 3-, 7-, and 14-day horizons during the two months subsequent to when the model for COVID-19 resurgence was built to align with the forecasting needs in an evolving pandemic. Results: Different sets of factors were found to be linked to the earlier waves of COVID-19 outbreaks compared to the epidemic resurgence of the pandemic. Sociodemographic factors such as work hours, monthly household income, employment types, and the number of non-working adults or children in household populations were of high importance to the studied buildings' COVID-19 case counts during the early waves of COVID-19. Factors constituting one's internal built environment, such as the number of distinct households in the buildings, the number of distinct households per floor, and the number of floors, corridors, and lifts, had the greatest unique contributions to the building-level COVID-19 case counts during epidemic resurgence.

Emergency department's (ED) boarding (defined as ED waiting time greater than four hours) has been linked to poor patient outcomes and health system performance. Yet, effective forecasting models is rare before COVID-19, lacking during the peri-COVID era. Here, a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN)-Long short-term memory (LSTM) model was applied to public-domain data sourced from Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, Department of Health, and Housing Authority. In addition, we sought to identify the phase of the COVID-19 pandemic that most significantly perturbed our complex adaptive healthcare system, thereby revealing a stable pattern of interconnectedness among its components, using deep transfer learning methodology.
Our result shows that 1) the greatest proportion of days with ED boarding was found between waves four and five; 2) the best-performing model for forecasting ED boarding was observed between waves four and five, which was based on features representing time-invariant residential buildings' built environment and sociodemographic profiles and the historical time series of ED boarding and case counts, compared to during the waves when best-performing forecasting is based on time-series features alone; and 3) when the model built from the period between waves four and five was applied to data from other waves via deep transfer learning, the transferred model enhanced the performance of indigenous models.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) in PET/CT is commonly operated with a single energy, resulting in a limitation of lacking tissue composition information. Dual-energy (DE) spectral CT enables material decomposition by using two different x-ray energies and may be combined with PET for improved multimodality imaging, but would either require hardware upgrade or increase radiation dose due to the added second x-ray CT scan. Recently proposed PET-enabled DECT method allows dual-energy spectral imaging using a conventional PET/CT scanner without the need for a second x-ray CT scan. A gamma-ray CT (gCT) image at 511 keV can be generated from the existing time-of-flight PET data with the maximum-likelihood attenuation and activity (MLAA) approach and is then combined with the low-energy x-ray CT image to form dual-energy spectral imaging. To improve the image quality of gCT, a kernel MLAA method was further proposed by incorporating x-ray CT as a priori information. The concept of this PET-enabled DECT has been validated using simulation studies, but not yet with 3D real data. In this work, we developed a general open-source implementation for gCT reconstruction from PET data and use this implementation for the first real data validation with both a physical phantom study and a human subject study on a uEXPLORER total-body PET/CT system. These results have demonstrated the feasibility of this method for spectral imaging and material decomposition.

From this, all the bulk symmetry operators are computed and matched to various D-brane configurations. The fusion algebra of the operators emerges from brane dynamics. In particular, we show that the symmetry operators are purely determined from the center-of-mass modes of the branes. We identify the TQFT fusion coefficients with the relative motion of the branes. We also establish the origin of condensation defects, arising from fusion of non-invertible operators, as the consequence of tachyon condensation in brane-anti-brane pairs.

Unveiling the true nature of Dark Matter (DM), which manifests itself only through gravity, is one of the principal quests in physics. Leading candidates for DM are weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) or ultralight bosons (axions), at opposite extremes in mass scales, that have been postulated by competing theories to solve deficiencies in the Standard Model of particle physics. Whereas DM WIMPs behave like discrete particles ($\varrho$DM), quantum interference between DM axions is manifested as waves ($ψ$DM). Here, we show that gravitational lensing leaves signatures in multiply-lensed images of background galaxies that reveal whether the foreground lensing galaxy inhabits a $\varrho$DM or $ψ$DM halo. Whereas $\varrho$DM lens models leave well documented anomalies between the predicted and observed brightnesses and positions of multiply-lensed images, $ψ$DM lens models correctly predict the level of anomalies left over by $\varrho$DM lens models. More challengingly, when subjected to a battery of tests for reproducing the quadruply-lensed triplet images in the system HS 0810+2554, $ψ$DM is able to reproduce all aspects of this system whereas $\varrho$DM often fails. The ability of $ψ$DM to resolve lensing anomalies even in demanding cases like HS 0810+2554, together with its success in reproducing other astrophysical observations, tilt the balance toward new physics invoking axions.

We demonstrate a novel mesh of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) for programmable optical processors. The proposed mesh, referred to as Bokun mesh, is an architecture that merges the attributes of the prior topologies Diamond and Clements. Similar to Diamond, Bokun provides diagonal paths passing through every individual MZI enabling direct phase monitoring. However, unlike Diamond and similar to Clements, Bokun maintains a minimum optical depth leading to better scalability. Providing the monitoring option, Bokun's programming is faster improving the total energy efficiency of the processor. The performance of Bokun mesh enabled by an optimal optical depth is also more resilient to the loss and fabrication imperfections compared to architectures with longer depth such as Reck and Diamond. Employing an efficient programming scheme, the proposed architecture improves energy efficiency by 83% maintaining the same computation accuracy for weight matrix changes at 2 kHz.

We consider 4d field theories obtained by reducing the 6d (1,0) SCFT of $N$ M5-branes probing a $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ singularity on a Riemann surface with fluxes. We follow two different routes. On the one hand, we consider the integration of the anomaly polynomial of the parent 6d SCFT on the Riemann surface. On the other hand, we perform an anomaly inflow analysis directly from eleven dimensions, from a setup with M5-branes probing a resolved $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ singularity fibered over the Riemann surface. By comparing the 4d anomaly polynomials, we provide a characterization of a class of modes that decouple along the RG flow from six to four dimensions, for generic $N$, $k$, and genus. These modes are identified with the flip fields encountered in the Lagrangian descriptions of these 4d models, when they are available. We show that such fields couple to operators originating from M2-branes wrap** the resolution cycles. This provides a geometric origin of flip fields. They interpolate between the 6d theory in the UV, where the M2-brane operators are projected out, and the 4d theory in the IR, where these M2-brane operators are part of the spectrum.

We analyze the global symmetries and anomalies of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ field theories that arise from a stack of $N$ M5-branes probing a class of flux backgrounds. These backgrounds consist of a resolved $\mathbb{C}^2 / \mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity fibered over a smooth Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, supported by a non-trivial $G_4$-flux configuration labeled by a collection of $2(k-1)$ flux quanta, $\{N_i\}$. For $k=2$, this setup defines a non-trivial superconformal field theory (SCFT) in the IR, which is holographically dual to an explicit $AdS_5$ solution first described by Gauntlett, Martelli, Sparks, and Waldram. The generalization to $k \geq 3$ is hard to tackle directly within holography. Instead, in this paper we lay the groundwork for a systematic analysis of such a generalization by adopting anomaly inflow methods to identify continuous and discrete global symmetries of the 4d field theories. We also compute the 't Hooft anomalies for continuous symmetries at leading order in the limit of large $N$, $N_i$.

Weakly spin-orbit coupled electron and hole spins in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) constitute near-perfect two-level systems to explore the interaction of light and matter in the ultrastrong-drive regime. Under such highly non-perturbative conditions, the frequency at which the spin oscillates between states, the Rabi frequency, becomes comparable to its natural resonance frequency, the Larmor frequency. For such conditions, we develop an intuitive understanding of the emergence of hybrid light-matter states, illustrating how dipole-forbidden multiple-quantum transitions at integer and fractional g-factors arise. A rigorous theoretical treatment of the phenomena comes from a Floquet-style solution to the time-dependent Hamiltonian of the electron-hole spin pair under resonant drive. To probe these phenomena experimentally requires both the development of a magnetic-resonance setup capable of supporting oscillating driving fields comparable in magnitude to the static field defining the Zeeman splitting; and an organic semiconductor which is characterized by minimal inhomogeneous broadening so as to allow the non-linear light-matter interactions to be resolved. The predicted exotic resonance features associated with the Floquet states are indeed found experimentally in measurements of spin-dependent steady-state OLED current under resonant drive, demonstrating that complex hybrid light-matter spin excitations can be formed and probed at room temperature. The spin-Dicke state arising under strong drive is insensitive to power broadening so that the Bloch-Siegert shift of the resonance becomes apparent, implying long coherence times of the dressed spin state with potential applicability for quantum sensing.

Control of the effective local hyperfine fields in a conjugated polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEHPPV), by isotopic engineering is reported. These fields, evident as a frequency-independent line broadening mechanism in electrically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy (EDMR), originate from the unresolved hyperfine coupling between the electronic spin of charge carrier pairs and the nuclear spins of surrounding hydrogen isotopes. The room temperature study of effects caused by complete deuteration of this polymer through magnetoresistance, magnetoelectroluminescence, coherent pulsed and multi-frequency EDMR, as well as inverse spin-Hall effect measurements, confirm the weak hyperfine broadening of charge carrier magnetic resonance lines. As a consequence, we can resolve coherent charge-carrier spin-beating, allowing for direct measurements of the magnitude of electronic spin-spin interactions. In addition, the weak hyperfine coupling allows us to resolve substantial spin-orbit coupling effects in EDMR spectra, even at low magnetic field strengths. These results illustrate the dramatic influence of hyperfine fields on the spin physics of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials at room temperature, and point to routes to reaching exotic ultra-strong resonant-drive regimes needed for the study of light-matter interactions.

The formation of Hoag-type galaxies with central spheroidal galaxies and outer stellar rings has yet to be understood in astronomy. We consider that these unique objects were formed from the past interaction between elliptical galaxies and gas-rich dwarf galaxies. We have modelled this potential formation process through simulation. These numerical simulations are a means of investigating this formation hypothesis, however the parameter space to be explored for these simulations is vast. Through the application of machine learning and computational science, we implement a new two-fold method to find the best model parameters for stellar rings in the simulations. First, test particle simulations are run to find a possible range of parameters for which stellar rings can be formed around elliptical galaxies (i.e. Hoag-type galaxies). A novel combination of particle swarm optimisation and Siamese neural networks has been implemented to perform the search over the parameter space and test the level of consistency between observations and simulations for numerous models. Upon the success of this initial step, we subsequently run full chemodynamical simulations for the derived range of model parameters in order to verify the output of the test particle simulations. We successfully find parameter sets at which stellar rings can be formed from the interaction between a gas-rich dwarf galaxy and a central elliptical galaxy. This is evidence that supports our hypothesis about the formation process of Hoag-type galaxies. In addition, this suggests that our new two-fold method has been successfully implemented in this problem search-space and can be investigated further in future applications. ~

Acting as powerful gravitational lenses, the strong lensing galaxy clusters of the deep Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program permit access to lower-luminosity galaxies lying at higher redshifts than hitherto possible. We analyzed the HFF to measure the volume density of Lyman-break galaxies at $z > 4.75$ by identifying a complete and reliable sample up to $z \simeq 10$. A marked deficit of such galaxies was uncovered in the highly magnified regions of the clusters relative to their outskirts, implying that the magnification of the sky area dominates over additional faint galaxies magnified above the flux limit. This negative magnification bias is consistent with a slow rollover at the faint end of the UV luminosity function, and indicates a preference for Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter with a light boson mass of $m_\mathrm{B} \simeq 10^{-22} \, \mathrm{eV}$ over standard cold dark matter. We emphasize that measuring the magnification bias requires no correction for multiply lensed images (with typically three or more images per source), whereas directly reconstructing the luminosity function will lead to an overestimate unless such images can be exhaustively matched up, especially at the faint end that is accessible only in the strongly lensed regions. In addition, we detected a distinctive downward transition in galaxy number density at $z \gtrsim 8$, which may be linked to the relatively late reionization reported by Planck. Our results suggests that JWST will likely peer into an "abyss" with essentially no galaxies detected in deep NIR imaging at $z > 10$.

According to Jerne's idiotypic network hypothesis, the adaptive immune system is regulated by interactions between the variable regions of antibodies, B cells, and T cells.1 The symmetrical immune network theory2,3 is based on Jerne's hypothesis, and provides a basis for understanding many of the phenomena of adaptive immunity. The theory includes the postulate that the repertoire of serum IgG molecules is regulated by T cells, with the result that IgG molecules express V region determinants that mimic V region determinants present on suppressor T cells. In this paper we describe rapid binding between purified murine serum IgG of H-2b and H-2d mice and serum IgG from the same strain and from MHC-matched mice, but not between serum IgG preparations of mice with different MHC genes. We interpret this surprising finding in terms of a model in which IgG molecules are selected to have both anti-anti-(self MHC class II) and anti-anti-anti-(self MHC class II) specificity.
