We show that mixed-phase titanium dioxide (TiO2) can be effectively employed as an unconventional, inorganic, dual-emitting and ratiometric optical sensor of O2. Simultaneous availability of rutile and anatase TiO2 PL and their peculiar anti-correlated PL responses to O2 allow using their ratio as measurement parameter associated to O2 concentration, leading to an experimental responsivity being by construction larger than the one obtainable for single-phase PL detection. A proof of this concept in given, showing a two-fold enhancement of the optical responsivity provided by the ratiometric approach. Besides the peculiar ratiometric-enhanced responsivity, other characteristics of mixed phase TiO2 can be envisaged as favorable for O2 optical probing, namely: a) low production costs, b) absence of heterogeneous components, c) self-supporting properties. These characteristics encourage experimenting its use for applications requiring high indicator quantities at competitive price, possibly also tackling the need to develop supporting matrixes that carry the luminescent probes and avoiding issues related to the use of different components for ratiometric sensing.

The issue of the quantitative analysis of time-resolved photoluminescence experiments is addressed by develo** and describing two approaches for determination of unimolecular lifetime, bimolecular recombination coefficient, and equilibrium free-carrier concentration, based on a quite general second-order expression of the electron-hole recombination rate. Application to the case of band-edge emission of ZnO single crystals is reported, evidencing the signature of sub-nanosecond second-order recombination dynamics for optical transitions close to the interband excitation edge. The resulting findings are in good agreement with the model prediction and further confirm the presence, formerly evidenced in literature by non-optical methods, of near-surface conductive layers in ZnO crystals with sheet charge densities of about 3รท5*10^13 cm^-2

Investigation of the interfacial electronic properties of N,N'-bis(n-octyl)-(1,7&1,6)-dicyanoperylene-3,4:9,10-bisdicarboximide (PDI8-CN2) organic semiconductor films grown on silicon dioxide is performed by polarization-resolved second harmonic generation optical spectroscopy, pointing out a spatial region where charge carriers distribution in the semiconductor lacks inversion symmetry. By develo** a model for nonlinear susceptibility in the framework of Debye-Huckel screening theory, we show that the experimental findings can be interpreted as resulting from the presence of a net charge localized at the silicon dioxide, accompanied by a non-uniform charge distribution in the organic semiconductor. Photoluminescence analysis further reinforces this scenario. Reduction-oxidation reactions involving PDI8-CN2 and water molecules are invoked as physical origin of the localized charge. The work outlines a sensitive tool to probe the total charge localized at buried semiconductor/dielectric interfaces in organic thin-film transistors without resorting to invasive contact-based analyses.

Abstract:
We studied the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties of compressive strained and unstrained BiMnO3 thin films grown by rf-magnetron sputtering. Above these thicknesses we observe a switching to a 3D island growth and a simultaneous structural change to a monoclinic structure characterized by a (00l) orientation of the monoclinic unit cell. While ferromagnetism is observed below Tc = 100 K for all samples, signatures of room temperature ferroelectricity were found only in the pseudo-cubic ultra-thin films, indicating a correlation between electronic and structural orders.

Equilibrium formally can be represented as an ensemble of uncoupled systems undergoing unbiased dynamics in which detailed balance is maintained. Many non-equilibrium processes can be described by suitable subsets of the equilibrium ensemble. Here, we employ the "weighted ensemble" (WE) simulation protocol [Huber and Kim, Biophys. J., 1996] to generate equilibrium trajectory ensembles and extract non-equilibrium subsets for computing kinetic quantities. States do not need to be chosen in advance. The procedure formally allows estimation of kinetic rates between arbitrary states chosen after the simulation, along with their equilibrium populations. We also describe a related history-dependent matrix procedure for estimating equilibrium and non-equilibrium observables when phase space has been divided into arbitrary non-Markovian regions, whether in WE or ordinary simulation. In this proof-of-principle study, these methods are successfully applied and validated on two molecular systems: explicitly solvated methane association and the implicitly solvated Ala4 peptide. We comment on challenges remaining in WE calculations.

Pre-calculated libraries of molecular fragment configurations have previously been used as a basis for both equilibrium sampling (via "library-based Monte Carlo") and for obtaining absolute free energies using a polymer-growth formalism. Here, we combine the two approaches to extend the size of systems for which free energies can be calculated. We study a series of all-atom poly-alanine systems in a simple dielectric "solvent" and find that precise free energies can be obtained rapidly. For instance, for 12 residues, less than an hour of single-processor is required. The combined approach is formally equivalent to the "annealed importance sampling" algorithm; instead of annealing by decreasing temperature, however, interactions among fragments are gradually added as the molecule is "grown." We discuss implications for future binding affinity calculations in which a ligand is grown into a binding site.

A recent Monte Carlo simulation determined the potential of mean force between two lysozyme molecules in various aqueous solutions [M. Lund et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 258105 (2008)]. The study involved a combination of explicit solvent and continuum model simulations and showed that there are significant ion-specific protein-protein interactions due to hydrophobic patches on the protein surfaces. In this paper we use the results of their study to determine the phase diagram for lysozyme for aqueous solutions of NaCl and NaI. Two of the three phase diagrams have a stable fluid-fluid critical point, while the third has a slightly metastable critical point. This results from a secondary extremum in the potential associated with a repulsive interaction. This repulsive interaction reduces the effective range of the attractive interaction and produces a metastable critical point. We compare the results of one of these phase diagrams with that for a model that includes ion-dispersion forces, but does not contain solvent structural effects.
