Exploration requires that robots reason about numerous ways to cover a space in response to dynamically changing conditions. However, in continuous domains there are potentially infinitely many options for robots to explore which can prove computationally challenging. How then should a robot efficiently optimize and choose exploration strategies to adopt? In this work, we explore this question through the use of variational inference to efficiently solve for distributions of coverage trajectories. Our approach leverages ergodic search methods to optimize coverage trajectories in continuous time and space. In order to reason about distributions of trajectories, we formulate ergodic search as a probabilistic inference problem. We propose to leverage Stein variational methods to approximate a posterior distribution over ergodic trajectories through parallel computation. As a result, it becomes possible to efficiently optimize distributions of feasible coverage trajectories for which robots can adapt exploration. We demonstrate that the proposed Stein variational ergodic search approach facilitates efficient identification of multiple coverage strategies and show online adaptation in a model-predictive control formulation. Simulated and physical experiments demonstrate adaptability and diversity in exploration strategies online.

We revisit the magnetic properties of the hexagonal ferrite PbFe$_{12-x}$Ga$_x$O$_{19}$. Recent experiments have reported puzzling dependencies of the ordering temperature and the saturation magnetization on the Ga concentration $x$. To explain these observations, we perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on the effects of an unequal distribution of the Ga impurities over the five distinct Fe sublattices. Ab-initio density-functional calculations predict that the Ga ions preferably occupy the $12k$ sublattice and (to a lesser extent) the $2a$ sublattice. We incorporate this insight into a nonuniform model of the Ga distribution. Monte Carlo simulations using this model lead to an excellent agreement between the theoretical and experimental values of the ordering temperature and saturation magnetization, indicating that the unequal distribution of the Ga impurities is the main reason for the unusual magnetic properties of PbFe$_{12-x}$Ga$_x$O$_{19}$. We also compute the temperature and concentration dependencies of the sublattice magnetizations, and we study the character of the zero-temperature transition that takes place when the ordering temperature is tuned to zero.

Continuous exploration without interruption is important in scenarios such as search and rescue and precision agriculture, where consistent presence is needed to detect events over large areas. Ergodic search already derives continuous trajectories in these scenarios so that a robot spends more time in areas with high information density. However, existing literature on ergodic search does not consider the robot's energy constraints, limiting how long a robot can explore. In fact, if the robots are battery-powered, it is physically not possible to continuously explore on a single battery charge. Our paper tackles this challenge, integrating ergodic search methods with energy-aware coverage. We trade off battery usage and coverage quality, maintaining uninterrupted exploration by at least one agent. Our approach derives an abstract battery model for future state-of-charge estimation and extends canonical ergodic search to ergodic search under battery constraints. Empirical data from simulations and real-world experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our energy-aware ergodic search, which ensures continuous exploration and guarantees spatial coverage.

In this paper, we address the problem of safe trajectory planning for autonomous search and exploration in constrained, cluttered environments. Guaranteeing safe (collision-free) trajectories is a challenging problem that has garnered significant due to its importance in the successful utilization of robots in search and exploration tasks. This work contributes a method that generates guaranteed safety-critical search trajectories in a cluttered environment. Our approach integrates safety-critical constraints using discrete control barrier functions (DCBFs) with ergodic trajectory optimization to enable safe exploration. Ergodic trajectory optimization plans continuous exploratory trajectories that guarantee complete coverage of a space. We demonstrate through simulated and experimental results on a drone that our approach is able to generate trajectories that enable safe and effective exploration. Furthermore, we show the efficacy of our approach for safe exploration using real-world single- and multi- drone platforms.

Motivated by recent experimental observations [Phys. Rev. 96, 020407 (2017)] on hexagonal ferrites, we revisit the phase diagrams of diluted magnets close to the lattice percolation threshold. We perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of XY and Heisenberg models on both simple cubic lattices and lattices representing the crystal structure of the hexagonal ferrites. Close to the percolation threshold $p_c$, we find that the magnetic ordering temperature $T_c$ depends on the dilution $p$ via the power law $T_c \sim |p-p_c|^φ$ with exponent $φ=1.09$, in agreement with classical percolation theory. However, this asymptotic critical region is very narrow, $|p-p_c| \lesssim 0.04$. Outside of it, the shape of the phase boundary is well described, over a wide range of dilutions, by a nonuniversal power law with an exponent somewhat below unity. Nonetheless, the percolation scenario does not reproduce the experimentally observed relation $T_c \sim (x_c -x)^{2/3}$ in PbFe$_{12-x}$Ga$_x$O$_{19}$. We discuss the generality of our findings as well as implications for the physics of diluted hexagonal ferrites.

The superfluid to insulator quantum phase transition of a three-dimensional particle-hole symmetric system of disordered bosons is studied. To this end, a site-diluted quantum rotor Hamiltonian is mapped onto a classical (3+1)-dimensional XY model with columnar disorder and analyzed by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. The superfluid-Mott insulator transition of the clean, undiluted system is in the 4D XY universality class and shows mean-field critical behavior with logarithmic corrections. The clean correlation length exponent $ν= 1/2$ violates the Harris criterion, indicating that disorder must be a relevant perturbation. For nonzero dilutions below the lattice percolation threshold of $p_c = 0.688392$, our simulations yield conventional power-law critical behavior with dilution-independent critical exponents $z=1.67(6)$, $ν= 0.90(5)$, $β/ν= 1.09(3)$, and $γ/ν= 2.50(3)$. The critical behavior of the transition across the lattice percolation threshold is controlled by the classical percolation exponents. Our results are discussed in the context of a classification of disordered quantum phase transitions, as well as experiments in superfluids, superconductors and magnetic systems.

We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional site-diluted quantum rotor model to investigate the properties of the superfluid density and the compressibility at this transition. We find that both quantities feature power-law critical behavior with exponents governed by generalized Josephson relations.
