Comparing a composite model versus chained models to locate a nearest visual object

Extracting information from geographic images and text is crucial for autonomous vehicles to determine in advance the best cell stations to connect to along their future path. Multiple artificial neural network models can address this challenge; however, there is no definitive guidance on the selection of an appropriate model for such use cases. Therefore, we experimented two architectures to solve such a task: a first architecture with chained models where each model in the chain addresses a sub-task of the task; and a second architecture with a single model that addresses the whole task. Our results showed that these two architectures achieved the same level performance with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.055 and 0.056; The findings further revealed that when the task can be decomposed into sub-tasks, the chain architecture exhibits a twelve-fold increase in training speed compared to the composite model. Nevertheless, the composite model significantly alleviates the burden of data labeling.

Reducing energy consumption is crucial to reduce the human debt's with regard to our planet. Therefore most companies try to reduce their energetic consumption while taking care to preserve the service delivered to their customers. To do so, a service provider (SP) typically downscale or shutdown part of its infrastructure in periods of low-activity where only few customers need the service. However an SP still needs to maintain part of its infrastructure "on", which still requires significant energy. For example a mobile national operator (MNO) needs to maintain most of its radio access network (RAN) active. Could an SP do better by cooperating with other SPs who would temporarily support its users, thus allowing it to temporarily shut down its infrastructure, and then reciprocate during another low-activity period? To answer this question, we investigated a novel collaboration framework based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) allowing negotiations between SPs as well as trustful reports from a distributed ledger technology (DLT) to evaluate the amount of energy being saved. We leveraged it to experiment three different sets of rules (free, recommended, or imposed) regulating the negotiation between multiple SPs (3, 4, 8, or 10). With respect to four cooperation metrics (efficiency, safety, incentive-compatibility, and fairness), the simulations showed that the imposed set of rules proved to be the best mode.

In many societal and industrial interactions, participants generally prefer their pure self-interest at the expense of the global welfare. Known as social dilemmas, this category of non-cooperative games offers situations where multiple actors should all cooperate to achieve the best outcome but greed and fear lead to a worst self-interested issue. Recently, the emergence of Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) has generated revived interest in social dilemmas with the introduction of Sequential Social Dilemma (SSD). Cooperative agents mixing RL policies and Tit-for-tat (TFT) strategies have successfully addressed some non-optimal Nash equilibrium issues. However, this kind of paradigm requires symmetrical and direct cooperation between actors, conditions that are not met when mutual cooperation become asymmetric and is possible only with at least a third actor in a circular way. To tackle this issue, this paper extends SSD with Circular Sequential Social Dilemma (CSSD), a new kind of Markov games that better generalizes the diversity of cooperation between agents. Secondly, to address such circular and asymmetric cooperation, we propose a candidate solution based on RL policies and a graph-based TFT. We conducted some experiments on a simple multi-player grid world which offers adaptable cooperation structures. Our work confirmed that our graph-based approach is beneficial to address circular situations by encouraging self-interested agents to reach mutual cooperation.

For improving e-health services, we propose a context-aware framework to monitor the activities of daily living of dependent persons. We define a strategy for generating long-term realistic scenarios and a framework containing an adaptive monitoring algorithm based on three approaches for optimizing resource usage. The used approaches provide a deep knowledge about the person's context by considering: the person's profile, the activities and the relationships between activities. We evaluate the performances of our framework and show its adaptability and significant reduction in network, energy and processing usage over a traditional monitoring implementation.

In this paper, we present a new framework that links the two worlds of wired and cellular users sharing systems. The approach is to propose an easy gateway that enables the use of cellular networks based services by wireline users and applications. The idea is to use a mobile terminal or wireless equipment for sharing cellular services, available thanks to its cellular network, to other users that use the wireline Internet. The software application acts as a gateway between the cellular and the wired network; it is responsible for supporting the services provided by the wireless network and make them accessible and usable, in a standard and easy way, by anyone on the wireline network. The gateway software can be integrated easily on any complex architecture since it can interact with any cellular modem. The paper describes an implementation prototype where some examples of services, such as the ability of using messaging services and calls streaming, are experimented. The proposed platform combines different standards to guarantee the use of our gateway in heterogeneous environments.

In this paper, we present PCNM, a new mobile platform for cellular networks measurements. PCNM is based on a set of techniques that tailors theoretical calculations and simulations to the real cellular network environment. It includes: (a) modules that measure different parameters of a base station (BS) such as localization, cells identification, time advance information, reception level and quality, (b) a new protocol that optimizes the task of network measurement by monitoring a set of mobile nodes and finally (c) the ability to extend an existing cellular network by adding new base stations. We evaluate our genetic algorithm used to reduce the nodes mobility and optimize the measurement extraction of N base stations using k mobile sensors (k >= 1). We show how connecting real measurements (using mobile sensors in a collaborative way) to theoretical and prediction methods is of high benefits for cellular networks maintenance, extension and performances evaluation.
