The internal motion of partons inside hadrons has been studied through its impact on very low transverse momentum spectra of Drell-Yan (DY) pairs created in hadron-hadron collisions. We study DY production at next-to-leading order using the Parton Branching (PB) method which describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. The main focus is on studying the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution (intrinsic-$k_T$) as a function of the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s$. While collinear parton shower Monte Carlo event generators require intrinsic transverse momentum distributions strongly dependent on $\sqrt s$, this is not the case for the PB method. We perform a detailed study of the impact of soft parton emissions. We show that by requiring a minimal transverse momentum, $q_0$, of a radiated parton, a dependence of the width of the intrinsic-$k_T$ distribution as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ is observed. This dependence becomes stronger with increasing $q_0$.

The small kT-region is very sensitive both to the contribution of the intrinsic motion of partons (intrinsic kT) and to the resummation of soft gluons taken into account by the PB TMD evolution equations. We study the role of soft-gluon emissions in TMD as well as integrated parton distributions. We perform a detailed investigation of the PB TMD methodology at next-to-leading order (NLO) in Drell-Yan (DY) production for low transverse momenta. We present the extraction of the nonperturbative "intrinsic-kT" distribution from recent measurements of DY transverse momentum distributions at the LHC across a wide range in DY masses, including a detailed treatment of statistical, correlated and uncorrelated uncertainties. We comment on the (in)dependence of intrinsic transverse momentum on DY mass and center-of-mass energy, and on the comparison with other approaches.

We construct a new parton branching algorithm which for the first time incorporates the off-shell, transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) splitting functions, defined from the high-energy limit of partonic decay amplitudes. Based on these TMD splitting functions we construct a new TMD Sudakov form factor. We present the first MC implementation of the algorithm for the evolution of the TMD and integrated parton distribution functions (PDFs). We use this implementation to evaluate small-$x$ corrections to the distributions and to verify the momentum sum rule. The presented study is a first step towards a full TMD MC generator covering the small-$x$ phase space.

The collinear factorization theorem, combined with finite-order calculations in perturbative QCD, provides a powerful framework to obtain predictions for many collider observables. However, for observables which involve multiple energy scales, transverse degrees of freedom cannot be neglected, and finite-order perturbative calculations have to be combined with resummed calculations to all orders in the QCD running coupling in order to obtain reliable theoretical predictions, capable of describing experimental measurements. This is traditionally done either by analytic resummation methods or by parton shower (PS) Monte Carlo (MC) methods. In this talk we present the Parton Branching (PB) MC method to obtain QCD collider predictions based on Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) factorization. The PB provides evolution equations for TMD Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) which, upon fitting TMD PDFs to experimental data, can be used in TMD MC event generators. We present the basic concepts of the method and illustrate its applications to collider measurements focusing on Drell-Yan (DY) lepton-pair production in different kinematic ranges, from fixed-target to LHC energies. We discuss the latest developments of the method concentrating especially on the matching of next-to-leading-order (NLO) TMD evolution with MC-at-NLO calculations of NLO matrix elements.

The description of the Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectrum requires matching of fixed order QCD calculations with soft gluon resummation up to all orders in the QCD coupling. It has been noticed in the literature that a consistent description of DY data in a wide kinematic regime from fixed-target to LHC energies is problematic. In this talk the predictions for transverse momentum spectrum of DY data coming from experiments in very different kinematic ranges (NuSea, R209, Phenix, LHC 8 TeV and 13 TeV center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$) are calculated by applying transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions obtained from the Parton Branching (PB) method, combined with the next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of the hard process in the MCatNLO method. We discuss the problems involved in matching of the fixed order calculation and resummation, especially in the moderate to low mass and $p_{\bot}$ region accessible at fixed target experiments. We find that at low DY mass and low $\sqrt{s}$ even in the region of $p_{\bot}/m_{DY}\sim 1$ the contribution of multiple soft gluon emissions (included in the PB-TMDs) is essential to describe the measurements, while at larger masses and LHC energies the contribution from soft gluons in the region of $p_{\bot}/m_{DY}\sim 1$ is small.

The theoretical description of Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra over wide kinematic regions in energy, mass and transverse momentum requires not only fixed-order perturbative QCD calculations but also soft-gluon QCD resummations to all orders of perturbation theory. The latter are traditionally accomplished either by Parton Showers (PS) with Monte Carlo event generators or by (different versions of) analytical procedures. In this work we focus on issues involved in the matching of the fixed-order calculation and resummation, especially in the moderate to low mass and $p_{\bot}$ region. In particular we address the DY region accessible at fixed target experiments. We present a Parton Branching (PB) formulation in which transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution is matched with MCatNLO calculations of NLO matrix elements. We examine this issue from the standpoint of the Parton Branching (PB) method, combining next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations of the hard process with the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. We compare our predictions with experimental measurements at low DY mass, and find very good agreement. In addition we use the low mass DY measurements at low $\sqrt{s}$ to determine the width $q_s$ of the intrinsic Gauss distribution of the PB-TMDs at low evolution scales. We find values close to what has earlier been used in applications of PB -TMDs to high-energy processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and HERA. We find that at low DY mass and low $\sqrt{s}$ even in the region of $p_t/m_{DY} \sim 1$ the contribution of multiple soft gluon emissions (included in the PB-TMDs) is essential to describe themeasurements, while at larger masses ($m_{DY} \sim m_{Z}$) and LHC energies the contribution from soft gluons in the region of $p_t/m_{DY}\sim 1$ is small.

The two sets of parton densities shown in this work are obtained with the same angular angular ordering condition for the evolution scale and they differ in the chosen scale for the strong coupling evaluation, for which we consider two scenarios: the evolution scale, and the transverse momentum qT from the angular ordering prescription. The transverse momentum dependent densities obtained with the Parton Branching method are applied to two LHC processes: the Drell-Yan pT spectrum and the azimuthal correlation in high pT dijet events. For the Drell-Yan pT spectrum a significant effect from the strong coupling scale choice is observed.

Collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities are obtained from fits to precision measurements of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections at HERA. The parton densities are evolved by DGLAP evolution with next-to-leading-order (NLO) splitting functions using the parton branching method, allowing one to determine simultaneously collinear and TMD densities for all flavors over a wide range in $x$, $μ^2$ and $k_t$, relevant for predictions at the LHC. The DIS cross section is computed from the parton densities using perturbative NLO coefficient functions.
Parton densities satisfying angular ordering conditions are presented. Two sets of parton densities are obtained, differing in the renormalization scale choice for the argument in the strong coupling alpha_s. This is taken to be either the evolution scale $μ$ or the transverse momentum $q_t$. While both choices yield similarly good $χ^2$ values for the fit to DIS measurements, especially the gluon density turns out to differ between the two sets.
The TMD densities are used to predict the transverse momentum spectrum of Z-bosons at the LHC.

We study parton-branching solutions of QCD evolution equations and present a method to construct both collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities from this approach. We work with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling. Using the unitarity picture in terms of resolvable and non-resolvable branchings, we analyze the role of the soft-gluon resolution scale in the evolution equations. For longitudinal momentum distributions, we find agreement of our numerical calculations with existing evolution programs at the level of better than 1 percent over a range of five orders of magnitude both in evolution scale and in longitudinal momentum fraction. We make predictions for the evolution of transverse momentum distributions. We perform fits to the high-precision deep inelastic scattering (DIS) structure function measurements, and we present a set of NLO TMD distributions based on the parton branching approach.

Abstract:
QCD evolution equations can be recast in terms of parton branching processes. We present a new numerical solution of the equations. We show that this parton-branching solution can be applied to analyze infrared contributions to evolution, order-by-order in the strong coupling $α_s$, as a function of the soft-gluon resolution scale parameter. We examine the cases of transverse-momentum ordering and…

We examine the cases of transverse-momentum ordering and angular ordering. We illustrate that this approach can be used to treat distributions which depend both on longitudinal and on transverse momenta.

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We discuss computational tools for TMDs, and present an application of a new tool, TMDlib, to parton density fits and parameterizations.
