Aims. We report the discovery of a peculiar object observed serendipitously with XMM-Newton. We present its timing and spectral properties and investigate its optical counterpart. Methods. The light curve of the X-ray source, its spectrum, and the spectrum of the best optical counterpart are presented and analyzed. Results. The X-ray flux decreases by a factor of 6.5 within 1 h and stays in a low state for at least 10 h, thereby suggesting the presence of an eclipse. The spectrum is very soft, a power law with a slope of Gamma~2.8, and does not change significantly before and after the flux drop. The source is spatially coincident within few arc-seconds with a Seyfert~2 galaxy belonging to a galaxy pair. Conclusions. Although the background AGN seems the best counterpart, neither the temporal nor the spectral properties of the X-ray source are compatible with it. We investigate the possibility of having a foreground low-mass X-ray binary in quiescence, where the companion is not detected in the optical wavelength.

The INT/WFC Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) is an imaging survey being carried out in H-alpha, r' and i' filters, with the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-metre Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) to a depth of r'=20 (10 sigma). The survey is aimed at revealing large scale structure in our local galaxy, and also the properties of key early and late populations making up the Milky Way. Map** emission line objects enables a particular focus on objects in the young and old stages of stellar evolution ranging from early T-Tauri stars to late planetary nebulae. In this paper we present the IPHAS Initial Data Release, primarily a photometric catalogue of about 200 million unique objects, coupled with associated image data covering about 1600 square degrees in three passbands. We note how access to the primary data products has been implemented through use of standard virtual observatory publishing interfaces. Simple traditional web access is provided to the main IPHAS photometric catalogue, in addition to a number of common catalogues (such as 2MASS) which are of immediate relevance. Access through the AstroGrid VO Desktop opens up the full range of analysis options, and allows full integration with the wider range of data and services available through the Virtual Observatory. The IDR represents the largest dataset published primarily through VO interfaces to date, and so stands as an examplar of the future of survey data mining. Examples of data access are given, including a cross-matching of IPHAS photometry with sources in the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey that validates the existing calibration of the best data.

We present spectroscopic observations of a sample of 72 emission-line objects, including mainly HII regions, in the spiral galaxy M 33. Spectra were obtained with the multi-object, wide field spectrograph AF2/WYFFOS at the 4.2m WHT telescope. Line intensities, extinction, and electron density were determined for the whole sample of objects. The aim of the present work was to derive chemical and physical parameters of a set of HII regions, and from them the metallicity gradient. Electron temperatures and chemical abundances were derived for the 14 HII regions where both [OII] and [OIII] emission line fluxes were measured, including the electron temperature sensitive emission line [OIII] 436.3 nm and in a few cases [NII] 575.5 nm. The ionization correction factor (ICF) method was used to derive the total chemical abundances. The presence of abundance gradients was inferred from the radial behaviour of several emission-line ratios, and accurately measured from chemical abundances directly derived in 14 HII regions. The oxygen abundances of our HII regions, located in the radial region from ~2 to ~7.2 kpc, gave an oxygen gradient -0.054+/-0.011 dex/kpc The overall oxygen gradient for M 33 obtained using ours and previous oxygen determinations in a large number of HII regions with direct electron temperature determination as well as abundance in young stars presented a two slope shape: -0.19 dex/kpc for the central regions (R<3kpc), and -0.038dex/kpc for the outer regions (R>=3kpc).

We report the results of spectroscopic observations, obtained with the GEMINI Multi-Object Spectrograph, of 8 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy NGC147, a companion of M31. The physico-chemical properties of the six brightest PNe (Corradi et al. 2005) were derived using both the empirical ICF method and photoionization modelling with CLOUDY. Different aspects of the evolution of low and intermediate mass stars in a low-metallicity environment are analysed using relationships between chemical abundances. In addition, certain features of the chemical evolution of NGC147 were examined. In particular, the mean metallicity of PNe, O/H=8.06 (corresponding to [Fe/H](PNe)~-0.97), is close to the metallicity of the old stellar population, [Fe/H]=-1.0 (Butler & Martinez-Delgado), suggesting a negligible chemical enrichment during a substantial amount of time. Finally, the luminosity-metallicity relationship for the dwarf galaxies of the Local Group is discussed. The location in the luminosity-metallicity diagram of dSphs does not exclude their formation from old dwarf irregular (dIrs) galaxies, but it does exclude their formation from the present time dIrs, since the differences between their metallicities are already present in their older populations. The offset in the luminosity-metallicity relationship indicates a faster enrichment of dSphs, and together with the different average abundance ratio [O/Fe] demonstrates the different star formation histories for these two types of galaxies.

We present the second part of an optical spectroscopic study of planetary nebulae in the LMC and SMC. The first paper, Leisy & Dennefeld (1996), discussed the CNO cycle for those objects where C abundances were available. In this paper we concentrate more on other elemental abundances (such as O, Ne, S, Ar) and their implications for the evolution of the progenitor stars. We use a much larger sample of 183 objects, of which 65 are from our own observations, where the abundances have been re-derived in a homogeneous way. For 156 of them, the quality of data is considered to be satisfactory for further analysis. We confirm the difficulty of separating Type-I and non-type-I objects in the classical He-N/O diagram, as found in Paper I, a problem reinforced by the variety of initial compositions for the progenitor stars. We observed oxygen variations, either depletion via the ON cycle in the more massive progenitor stars, or oxygen production in other objects. Neon production also appears to be present. These enrichments are best explained by fresh material from the core or from burning shells, brought to the surface by the 3rd dredge-up, as reproduced in recent models, some including overshooting. All the effects appear stronger in the SMC, suggesting a higher efficiency in a low metallicity environment. Neither oxygen nor neon can therefore be used to derive the initial composition of the progenitor star: other elements not affected by processing such as sulfur, argon or, if observed, chlorine, have to be preferred for this purpose. Some objects with very low initial abundances are detected, but on average, the spatial distribution of PNe abundances is consistent with the history of star formation (SF) as derived from field stars in both Clouds.

The Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric H-alpha Survey (IPHAS) is currently map** the Northern Galactic plane reaching to r'=20 mag with typically 1" resolution. Hundreds of Planetary Nebulae (PNe), both point-like and resolved, are expected to be discovered. We report on the discovery of the first new PN from this survey: it is an unusual object located at a large galactocentric distance and has a very low oxygen abundance. The nebula shows an intricate morphology: there is an inner ring surrounding the central star, bright inner lobes with an enhanced waist, and very faint lobular extensions reaching up to more than 100". We classify it as a quadrupolar PN, a rather unusual class of planetary showing two pairs of misaligned lobes. From long-slit spectroscopy we derive Te[NII] =12800+-1000K, Ne = 390+-40 cm-3, and chemical abundances typical of Peimbert's Type I nebulae (He/H =0.13, N/O =1.8) with an oxygen abundance of 12 + log(O/H)=8.17+-0.15. A kinematic distance of 7.0 kpc is derived, implying an unusually large size of >4 pc for the nebula. The photometry of the central star indicates the presence of a relatively cool companion. This, and the evidence for a dense circumstellar disk and quadrupolar morphology, all of which are rare among PNe, support the hypothesis that this morphology is related to binary interaction.

Spectroscopic observations obtained with the VLT of one planetary nebula (PN) in Sextans A and of five PNe in Sextans B and of several HII regions (HII) in these two dwarf irregular galaxies are presented. The extended spectral coverage, from 320.0 to 1000.0nm, and the large telescope aperture allowed us to detect a number of emission lines, covering more than one ionization stage for several elements (He, O, S, Ar). The electron temperature (Te) diagnostic [OIII] line at 436.3 nm was measured in all six PNe and in several HII allowing for an accurate determination of the ionic and total chemical abundances by means of the Ionization Correction Factors method. For the time being, these PNe are the farthest ones where such a direct measurement of the Te is obtained. In addition, all PNe and HII were also modelled using the photoionization code CLOUDY. The physico-chemical properties of PNe and HII are presented and discussed. A small dispersion in the oxygen abundance of HII was found in both galaxies: 12 + $\log$(O/H)=7.6$\pm$0.2 in SextansA, and 7.8$\pm$0.2 in SextansB. For the five PNe of SextansA, we find that 12 + $\log$(O/H)=8.0$\pm$0.3, with a mean abundance consistent with that of HII. The only PN known in SextansA appears to have been produced by a quite massive progenitor, and has a significant nitrogen overabundance. In addition, its oxygen abundance is 0.4 dex larger than the mean abundance of HII, possibly indicating an efficient third dredge-up for massive, low-metallicity PN progenitors. The metal enrichment of both galaxies is analyzed using these new data.

In the framework of the Local Group Census (LGC), a survey of the Local Group (LG) galaxies above Dec=$-30^\circ$, which is aimed at surveying their populations with strong emission lines, we have searched for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the low-metallicity dwarf irregular galaxies IC1613, WLM, GR8. Two new candidate PNe have been found in IC1613, one in WLM and none in GR8. The observations presented in this paper, together with the previous results from the LGC, represent the first step in the study of the PN population in low-metallicity, dwarf irregular galaxies of the Local Group. They will be followed by deep spectroscopy to confirm their nature and to study their physical-chemical properties. We used the observed number of PNe in each LG galaxy to estimate a lower limit to the mass of the intermediate-age population which was compared to the Star Formation Rate (SFR) of LG dwarf galaxies. These results are in agreement with those from accurate star formation history (SFH) analysis for these small galaxy systems.

We have discovered 13 new candidate Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, increasing its total number to 17 objects. Our sample of candidate PNe is complete down to 3.5 mag below the brightest PN.

In the framework of our narrow-band survey of the Local Group galaxies, we present the results of the search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf irregular galaxies IC10, LeoA and SextansA. Using the standard on-band/off-band technique, sixteen new candidate PNe have been discovered in the closest starburst galaxy, IC10. The optical size of this galaxy is estimated to be much larger than previously thought, considering the location of the new PNe in an area of 3.6 kpc X 2.7 kpc. We also confirm the results of previous studies for the other two dwarf irregular galaxies, with the detection of one candidate PN in LeoA and another one in SextansA. We review the number of planetary nebulae discovered in the Local Group to date and their behaviour with metallicity. We suggest a possible fall in the observed number of PNe when [Fe/H]$<<$-1.0, which might indicate that below this point the formation rate of PNe is much lower than for stellar populations of near Solar abundances. We also find non-negligible metallicity effects on the [OIII] luminosity of the brightest PN of a galaxy.

Using data from the EROS2 microlensing survey, we report the discovery of two blue objects with irregular photometric behaviour of $ΔV \sim 0.1$-0.4 mag on time scales of 20 to 200 days. They show a bluer when fainter behaviour. Subsequent spectra taken with the ESO 3.6m telescope show spectral type B4eIII and B2eIV-V with strong $H α$ emission. These objects resemble the Herbig AeBe but also classical Be stars. At this stage, it is not possible to distinguish unambiguously between pre-main sequence and classical Be nature. If we favour the pre-main sequence interpretation, they are more luminous than the luminosity upper limit for Galactic HAeBe stars. The same was found for the HAeBe candidates in the LMC. This might be due to a shorter accretion time scale ($τ= M_*/\dot{M}$), or the smaller dust content during the pre-main sequence evolution of SMC and LMC stars.
