We discuss how one-dimensional interacting fermion systems, which in the low energy approximation are described by Luttinger liquid theory, can be reformulated as systems of weakly interacting particles with fractional charge and statistics. Our approach is to use Landau's phenomenological approach to Fermi liquid theory, where the quasiparticles are interpreted as adiabatically dressed fermions. In an earlier publication the local charge carried by these excitations has been shown to be fractional. We focus here on the statistics of the quasiparticles and show that by a change of momentum variables the Landau parameters of the generalized Fermi fluid can be transformed to zero. This change in interaction is compensated by a change of the entropy function, which is consistent with the interpretation of the quasiparticles as satisfying generalized exclusion statistics.

We discuss the propagation and fractionalization of localized charges on the edges of quantum Hall bars of variable widths, where interactions between the edges give rise to Luttinger liquid behavior with a non-trivial interaction parameter g. We focus in particular on the separation of an initial charge pulse into a sharply defined front charge and a broader tail. The front pulse describes an adiabatically dressed electron which carries a non-integer charge, which is \sqrt{g} times the electron charge. We discuss how the presence of this fractional charge can, in principle, be detected through measurements of the noise in the current created by tunneling of electrons into the system. The results are illustrated by numerical simulations of a simplified model of the Hall bar.

In bipartite quantum systems of dimension 3x3 entangled states that are positive under partial transposition (PPT) can be constructed with the use of unextendible product bases (UPB). As discussed in a previous publication all the lowest rank entangled PPT states of this system seem to be equivalent, under special linear product transformations, to states that are constructed in this way. Here we consider a possible generalization of the UPB constuction to low-rank entangled PPT states in higher dimensions. The idea is to give up the condition of orthogonality of the product vectors, while kee** the relation between the density matrix and the projection on the subspace defined by the UPB. We examine first this generalization for the 3x3 system where numerical studies indicate that one-parameter families of such generalized states can be found. Similar numerical searches in higher dimensional systems show the presence of extremal PPT states of similar form. Based on these results we suggest that the UPB construction of the lowest rank entangled states in the 3x3 system can be generalized to higher dimensions, with the use of non-orthogonal UPBs.

It is known how to construct, in a bipartite quantum system, a unique low rank entangled mixed state with positive partial transpose (a PPT state) from an unextendible product basis (a UPB), defined as an unextendible set of orthogonal product vectors. We point out that a state constructed in this way belongs to a continuous family of entangled PPT states of the same rank, all related by non-singular product transformations, unitary or non-unitary. The characteristic property of a state $ρ$ in such a family is that its kernel $\Kerρ$ has a generalized UPB, a basis of product vectors, not necessarily orthogonal, with no product vector in $\Imρ$, the orthogonal complement of $\Kerρ$. The generalized UPB in $\Kerρ$ has the special property that it can be transformed to orthogonal form by a product transformation. In the case of a system of dimension $3\times 3$, we give a complete parametrization of orthogonal UPBs. This is then a parametrization of families of rank 4 entangled (and extremal) PPT states, and we present strong numerical evidence that it is a complete classification of such states. We speculate that the lowest rank entangled and extremal PPT states also in higher dimensions are related to generalized, non-orthogonal UPBs in similar ways.

Charge fractionalization is the phenomenon where quasi-particle excitations in a many-particle system appear with non-integer values relative to the fundamental charge unit. Examples of such systems are known from field theoretical models and from physical realizations. Recently there has been an interest in charge fractionalization in one-dimensional systems described by Luttinger liquid theory. These are gapless systems and that gives rise to the question whether non-integer charges should be regarded as sharp in the same meaning as in a gapped system. In this talk I first give an introduction to charge fractionalization as an effect in gapped systems and discuss next in what sense the charge fractionalization effect is found in gapless Luttinger liquids. The talk is based on a recent paper with Mats Horsdal and Thors Hans Hansson.

We examine charge fractionalization by chiral separation in a one-dimensional fermion system described by Luttinger liquid theory. The focus is on the question of whether the fractional charges are quantum mechanically sharp, and in the analysis we make a distinction between the global charge, which is restricted by boundary conditions, and the local charge where a background contribution is subtracted. We show, by way of examples, that fractional charges of arbitrary values, all which are quantum mechanically sharp, can be introduced by different initial conditions. Since the system is gapless, excitations of arbitrary low frequency contribute to the fluctuations, it is important to make a precise definition of sharp charges, and this we we do by subtraction of the ground state contribution. We very briefly comment on the relevance of our analysis for proposed experiments.

We focus first on the simplest case of two two-level systems and show that a ``relativistic'' formulation leads to a complete analysis of the question of separability. Our approach is based on Schmidt decomposition of density matrices for a composite system and non-unitary transformations to a standard form. The positivity of the density matrices is crucial for the method to work. A similar approach works to some extent in higher dimensions, but is a less powerful tool. We further present a numerical method for examining separability, and illustrate the method by a numerical study of bound entanglement in a composite system of two three-level systems.

We study the generalized Unruh effect for accelerated reference frames that include rotation in addition to acceleration. We focus particularly on the case where the motion is planar, with presence of a static limit in addition to the event horizon. Possible definitions of an accelerated vacuum state are examined and the interpretation of the Minkowski vacuum state as a thermodynamic state is discussed. Such athermodynamic state is shown to depend on two parameters, the acceleration temperature and a drift velocity, which are determined by the acceleration and angular velocity of the accelerated frame. We relate the properties of Minkowski vacuum in the accelerated frame to the excitation spectrum of a detector that is stationary in this frame. The detector can be excited both by absorbing positive energy quanta in the "hot" vacuum state and by emitting negative energy quanta into the "ergosphere" between the horizon and the static limit. The effects are related to similar effects in the gravitational field of a rotating black hole.

We formulate an effective theory for the atom-mediated photon-photon interactions in a two-dimensional ``photon fluid'' confined in a Fabry-Perot resonator. With the atoms modelled by a collection of anharmonic Lorentz oscillators, the effective interaction is evaluated to second order in the coupling constant (the anharmonicity parameter). The interaction has the form of a renormalized two-dimensional delta-function potential, with the renormalization scale determined by the physical parameters of the system, such as density of atoms and the detuning of the photons relative to the resonance frequency of the atoms. For realistic values of the parameters, the perturbation series has to be resummed, and the effective interaction becomes independent of the ``bare'' strength of the anharmonic term. The resulting expression for the non-linear Kerr susceptibility, is parametrically equal to the one found earlier for a dilute gas of two-level atoms. Using our result for the effective interaction parameter, we derive conditions for the formation of a photon fluid, both for Rydberg atoms in a microwave cavity and for alkali atoms in an optical cavity.

We propose a new effective field theory for partially polarized quantum Hall states. The density and polarization for the mean field ground states are determined by couplings to two Chern-Simons gauge fields. In addition there is a $σ$-model field, $\mh$, which is necessary both to preserve the Chern-Simons gauge symmetry that determines the correlations in the ground state, and the global SU(2) invariance related to spin rotations. For states with non zero polarization, the low energy dynamics is that of a ferromagnet. In addition to spin waves, the spectrum contains topological solitons, or skyrmions, just as in the fully polarized case. The electric charge of the skyrmions is given by $Q_{el}=νP Q_{top}$, where $ν$ is the filling fraction, $P$ the magnitude of the polarization, and $Q_{top}$ the topological charge. For the special case of full polarization, the theory involves a single scalar field and a single Chern-Simons field in addition to the $σ$-model field, $\mh$. We also give a heuristic derivation of the model lagrangians for both full and partial polarization, and show that in a mean field picture, the field $\mh$ is necessary in order to take into account the Berry phases originating from rotations of the electron spins.

The polarization effect due to spin flip synchrotron radiation is examined by treating the electron as a simple quantum mechanical two-level system coupled to the orbital motion and to the radiation field. The excitations of the spin system are related to the Unruh effect, i.e. the effect that an accelerated radiation detector is thermally excited by vacuum fluctuations. The importance of orbital fluctuations is pointed out and the vertical fluctuations are examined.

We review the bulk properties of the model and discuss how the plateau formation emerges without any impurity potential. The Chern-Simons Ginzburg-Landau theory for the fractional Quantum Hall effect is studied in the presence of a confining potential. We review the bulk properties of the model and discuss how the plateau formation emerges without any impurity potential. The effect is related to changes, by accumulation of charge, at the edge when the chemical potential is changed. Fluctuations about the ground state are examined and an expression is found for the velocity of the massless edge mode in terms of the confining potential. The effect of including spin is examined for the case when the system is fully polarized in the bulk. In general a spin texture may appear at the edge, and we examine this effect in the case of a small spin down component. The low frequency edge modes are examined and a third order equation is found for velocities which indicates the presence of three different modes. The discussions are illustrated by numerical studies of the ground states, both for the one- and two-component cases.

The algebra of observables for identical particles on a line is formulated starting from postulated basic commutation relations. A realization of this algebra in the Calogero model was previously known. New realizations are presented here in terms of differentiation operators and in terms of SU(N)-invariant observables of the Hermitian matrix models. Some particular structure properties of the a…

Generalized statistics and the algebra of observables
Authors:

Abstract:
A short review is given of how to apply the algebraic Heisenberg quantization scheme to a system of identical particles. For two particles in one dimension the approach leads to a generalization of the Bose and Fermi description which can be expressed in the form of a 1/x^2 statistics interaction between the particles. For an N-particle system it is shown how a particular infinite-dimensional al…

For two particles in one dimension the approach leads to a generalization of the Bose and Fermi description which can be expressed in the form of a 1/x^2 statistics interaction between the particles. For an N-particle system it is shown how a particular infinite-dimensional algebra arises as a generalization of the su(1,1) algebra which is present for the two-particle system.

We consider a two-component quantum Hall system within a Landau-Ginzburg theory with two Chern-Simons gauge fields. From this theory we derive a sigma model covariantly coupled to one Chern-Simons field and find mean field solutions that could describe partially polarized quantum Hall states. The quasiparticles in the original model, which have quantized charge and spin, are described in the covariant sigma model by topological excitations, with the correct quantum numbers. They have finite energy due to the presence of the Chern-Simons field, and closely resemble the skyrmions in the usual non-linear sigma model. For the fully polarized states the spin is no longer quantized, but determined by Coulomb and Zeeman interactions.

An algebra ${\cal G}$ of symmetric {\em one-particle} operators is constructed for the Calogero model. This is an infinite-dimensional Lie-algebra, which is independent of the interaction parameter $λ$ of the model. It is constructed in terms of symmetric polynomials of raising and lowering operators which satisfy the commutation relations of the $S_N$-{\em extended} Heisenberg algebra. We interpret ${\cal G}$ as the algebra of observables for a system of identical particles on a line. The parameter $λ$, which characterizes (a class of) irreducible representations of the algebra, is interpreted as a statistics parameter for the identical particles.
