Abstract:
A comparative resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of three well-known Kitaev materials is presented: $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, Na$_2$IrO$_3$, and $α$-RuCl$_3$. Despite similar low-energy physics, these materials show distinct electronic properties, such as the large difference in the size of the charge gap. The RIXS spectra of the spin-orbit exciton for these materials show remarkably similar three-peak features, including sharp low energy peak (peak A) as well as transitions between $j_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ and $j_{\text{eff}}=3/2$ states. Comparison of experimental spectra with cluster calculations reveals that the observed three-peak structure reflects the significant role that non-local physics plays in the electronic structure of these materials. In particular, the low-energy peak A arises from a holon-doublon pair rather than a conventional particle-hole exciton as proposed earlier. Our study suggests that while spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator is still the best description for these materials, electron itinerancy cannot be ignored when formulating low-energy Hamiltonian of these materials.

We carried out X-ray diffraction and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) studies to investigate the origin of the low lattice thermal conductivity in BiCuSeO, and the role of silver (Ag) do** in doped samples. BiCuSeO is a promising thermoelectric material with high thermoelectric efficiency, which is significantly enhanced by do** either single Ag dopants or dual dopants (Pb and Ag). We verified that the thermal displacement parameters associated with copper (Cu) are significantly large in undoped BiCuSeO. Ag dopant, which replaces Cu, was also found to have similarly large thermal displacement parameters, that remain large down to low temperatures. Our results point towards significant disorder on Cu-site in both undoped and doped BiCuSeO, which is retained by Ag dopant on replacing Cu. The disorder is observed to be localized on the Cu-site and seems to be independent of other atoms in the crystal structure. Our observation of the disorder, which could be either static or quasi-static, is consistent with a rattling mode scenario.

Our estimation of the spin-exchange parameter and width of the paramagnon peak at the zone boundary $X=(0.5,0)$ confirms that no simple relation can be drawn between these parameters and the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Consistently with other cuprate compounds, we show that upon do** there is a slight softening at $(0.25,0)$, but not at the zone boundary $X$. In combination with these measurements we perform calculations of the dynamical spin structure factor of the one-band Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment in the undoped case, both in terms of energy position and width. While the increase in width is also captured upon do**, the dynamical spin structure factor shows a sizable softening at $X$, which provides insightful information on the length-scale of the spin fluctuations in doped cuprates.

Abstract:
We report the temperature dependence of the Yb valence in the geometrically frustrated compound $\mathrm{YbB_4}$ from 12 to 300 K using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy at the Yb $L_{α_1}$ transition. We find that the Yb valence, $v$, is hybridized between the $v=2$ and $v=3$ valence states, increasing from $v=2.61\pm0.01$ at 12 K to $v=2.67\pm0.01$ at 300 K, confirming that $\mathrm{YbB_4}$ i…

We find that the Yb valence, $v$, is hybridized between the $v=2$ and $v=3$ valence states, increasing from $v=2.61\pm0.01$ at 12 K to $v=2.67\pm0.01$ at 300 K, confirming that $\mathrm{YbB_4}$ is a Kondo system in the intermediate valence regime. This result indicates that the Kondo interaction in $\mathrm{YbB_4}$ is substantial, and is likely to be the reason why $\mathrm{YbB_4}$ does not order magnetically at low temperature, rather than this being an effect of geometric frustration. Furthermore, the zero-point valence of the system is extracted from our data and compared with other Kondo lattice systems. The zero-point valence seems to be weakly dependent on the Kondo temperature scale, but not on the valence change temperature scale $T_v$.

Here, we used resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

Using x-ray emission spectroscopy, we find appreciable local magnetic moments until 30-40 GPa in the high-pressure phase of iron, however no magnetic order is detected with neutron powder diffraction down to 1.8 K contrary to previous predictions. Our first-principles calculations reveal a "spin-smectic" state lower in energy than previous results. This state forms antiferromagnetic bilayers separated by null spin bilayers, which allows a complete relaxation of the inherent frustration of antiferromagnetism on a hexagonal close-packed lattice. The magnetic bilayers are likely orientationally disordered, owing to the soft interlayer excitations and the near-degeneracy with other smectic phases. This possible lack of long-range correlation agrees with the null results from neutron powder diffraction. An orientationally-disordered, spin-smectic state resolves previously perceived contradictions in high pressure iron and could be integral to explaining its puzzling superconductivity.

The local electronic and magnetic properties of superconducting FeSe have been investigated by K$β$ x-ray emission (XES) and simultaneous x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Fe K-edge at high pressure and low temperature. Our results indicate a sluggish decrease of the local Fe spin moment under pressure up to 7~GPa, in line with previous reports, followed by a sudden increase at higher pressure which has been hitherto unobserved. The magnetic surge is preceded by an abrupt change of the Fe local structure as observed by the decrease of the XAS pre-edge region intensity and corroborated by ab-initio simulations. This pressure corresponds to a structural transition, previously detected by x-ray diffraction, from the $Cmma$ form to the denser $Pbnm$ form with octahedral coordination of iron. Finally, the near-edge region of the XAS spectra shows a change before this transition at 5~GPa, corresponding well with the onset pressure of the previously observed enhancement of $T_c$. Our results emphasize the delicate interplay between structural, magnetic, and superconducting properties in FeSe under pressure.

By means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Cu L$_3$ edge, we measured the spin wave dispersion along $\langle$100$\rangle$ and $\langle$110$\rangle$ in the undoped cuprate Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. The data yields a reliable estimate of the superexchange parameter $J$ = 135 $\pm$ 4 meV using a classical spin-1/2 2D Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interactions and including quantum fluctuations. Including further exchange interactions increases the estimate to $J$ = 141 meV. The 40 meV dispersion between the magnetic Brillouin zone boundary points (1/2,\,0) and (1/4,\,1/4) indicates that next-nearest neighbor interactions in this compound are intermediate between the values found in La$_{2}$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Owing to the low-$Z$ elements composing Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, the present results may enable a reliable comparison with the predictions of quantum many-body calculations, which would improve our understanding of the role of magnetic excitations and of electronic correlations in cuprates.
