Spontaneous strain and spontaneous folding of thin nanoplatelets are known phenomena whose microscopic mechanisms are still debating. In this work, first-principles calculations are used to study the mechanical stresses that arise in Janus CdSe nanoplatelets and result in their spontaneous strain. Calculations reveal the existence of three microscopic mechanisms of this phenomenon. Two bulk mechanisms are associated with the inverse piezoelectric effect in an electric field created by the difference in electronegativities of ligands and by the depolarizing field resulting from the difference in the potential jumps in electrical double layers on the surfaces of nanoplatelets. These mechanisms account for 5-25% of the observed effect. The third mechanism is associated with the surface strain of nanoplatelets by bridging bonds, and its influence is predominant. It is shown that the latter mechanism cause spontaneous folding of thin CdSe nanoplatelets and, depending on the values of surface stresses and lateral orientation of nanoplatelets, can result in formation of their experimentally observed structures such as scrolls, spirals, and twisted ribbons.

An approach to analyzing the spinor wave functions that appear in the electronic structure calculations when taking the spin-orbit interaction into account is developed. It is based on the projection analysis of angular parts of wave functions onto irreducible representations of the point group and analysis of the evolution of the energy levels upon the adiabatic turning on the spin-orbit interaction. The technique is illustrated by an example of the changes in the valence band structure in strained bulk CdSe with zinc-blende structure. An analysis of the character of mixing of various branches of the valence band supports the Luttinger-Kohn model of the valence band. It is shown that the above calculations complemented by the Zeeman splitting in a magnetic field make it possible to unambiguously determine the polarization of all optical transitions. Using the spinor wave functions, matrix elements of optical transitions between the valence subbands and the conduction band are calculated.

The unusual vibration band containing a number of pronounced maxima at about 1147, 1245, 1344, and 1456 cm-1 was detected in Raman spectra. The band is confidently identified with the bending vibrational modes of CHx groups terminating the nanodiamonds surface. Excessively intense mode at 1344 cm-1 is explained by its coupling with the 1328 cm-1 diamond phonons. The Raman band found is proposed to be used for express recognition of ultrasmall nanodiamonds produced from adamantane and other hydrocarbons with a high hydrogen content. Moreover, polarized CH bonds on a diamond surface are sensitive to environmental conditions. This opens up opportunities for using the diamond produced from adamantane as ultrasmall nanosensors in biology, chemistry, and medicine

The influence of annealing temperature and deviation from stoichiometry on the possibility of incorporation of the impurity into the $A$ and $B$ sites of the perovskite structure is studied. The results obtained from the X-ray diffraction, XANES spectra, and EXAFS spectra suggest that at high annealing temperature the iron atoms, at least partially (up to 30%), enter the $A$ sites in SrTiO$_3$. The obtained results agree with results of first-principles calculations, according to which the iron at the $A$ site exhibits strong off-centering (the displacement of $\sim$1 Å), similar to that previously established in SrTiO$_3$ samples doped with Mn and Co.

A prime example is the $J_{\text{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ state in iridate materials and $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ that drives Kitaev interactions. Here, by tuning the competition between spin-orbit interaction ($λ_{\text{SOC}}$) and trigonal crystal field splitting ($Δ_\text{T}$), we restructure the spin-orbital wave functions into a novel $μ=\frac{1}{2}$ state that drives Ising interactions. This is done via a topochemical reaction that converts Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$ to Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}$O$_{6}$, leading to an enhanced trigonal distortion and a diminished spin-orbit coupling in the latter compound. Using perturbation theory, we present an explicit expression for the new $μ=\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit $Δ_\text{T}\gg λ_{\text{SOC}}$ realized in Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}$O$_{6}$, different from the conventional $J_\text{eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit $λ_{\text{SOC}}\gg Δ_\text{T}$ realized in Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$. The change of ground state is followed by a dramatic change of magnetism from a 6 K spin-glass in Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$ to a 94 K antiferromagnet in Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}$O$_{6}$. These results open a pathway for tuning materials between the two limits and creating a rich magnetic phase diagram.

In this respect, copper-based sulfide compounds have emerged as viable alternatives. Herein, we report for the first time the successful synthesis of single-phase cubic isocubanite CuFe2S3 using mechanical-alloying combined with microwave-assisted synthesis. The isocubanite phase synthesized via this ultra-fast out-of-equilibrium process exhibits a maximum thermoelectric figure of merit, zTmax ~ 0.14 at 673 K. Besides the thermoelectric properties, insights about the structure of isocubanite, based on the refinement of X-ray diffraction data and first principles calculations, are also investigated in detail. It confirms that the Cu-Fe cations in synthetic isocubanite overwhelmingly occupy the 4d sites of the cubic structure in an inherently disordered fashion.

Nearly two decades ago, Alexei Kitaev proposed a model for spin-$1/2$ particles with bond-directional interactions on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice which had the potential to host a quantum spin-liquid ground state. This work initiated numerous investigations to design and synthesize materials that would physically realize the Kitaev Hamiltonian. The first-generation of such materials, such as Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, and $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, revealed the presence of non-Kitaev interactions such as the Heisenberg and off-diagonal exchange. Both physical pressure and chemical do** were used to tune the relative strength of the Kitaev and competing interactions; however, little progress was made towards achieving a purely Kitaev system. Here, we review the recent breakthrough in modifying Kitaev magnets via topochemical methods that has led to the second-generation of Kitaev materials. We show how structural modifications due to the topotactic exchange reactions can alter the magnetic interactions in favor of a quantum spin-liquid phase.

The vibrational spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures can provide important information on their structure. In this work, experimental Raman and infrared spectra are compared with vibrational spectra of CdSe/CdS core/shell nanoplatelets calculated from first principles using the density functional theory. The calculations confirm the two-mode behavior of phonon spectra of nanostructures. An analysis of the experimental spectra reveals the absence of modes with a high amplitude of vibrations of surface atoms, which indicates their strong dam**. Taking into account the difference in the dam** of different modes and their calculated intensities, all bands in the spectra are unambiguously identified. It is found that the frequencies of longitudinal optical modes in heterostructures are close to the frequencies of LO phonons in bulk strained constituents, whereas the frequencies of transverse modes can differ significantly from those of the corresponding TO phonons. It is shown that an anomalous thickness dependence of CdS TO mode is due to a noticeable surface relaxation of the outer Cd layer in the nanostructure.

The vibrational spectra of CdSe/CdS superlattices (SLs) with different layer thicknesses are calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. It is shown that, along with folded acoustic and confined optical modes, a number of confined acoustic modes appear in SLs. In structures with a minimum thickness of one of the layers, microscopic interface modes similar to local and gap modes in crystals appear. An analysis of projections of the eigenvectors of vibrational modes in SLs onto the orthonormal basis of normal modes in binary compounds enables to establish the details of formation of these vibrational modes and, in particular, to determine the degree of intermixing of acoustic and optical modes. A comparison of the frequencies of vibrational modes in CdSe/CdS SLs and CdSe/CdS nanoplatelets enables to separate the influence of size quantization and surface relaxation on the vibrational frequencies in the nanoplatelets.

The local structure and oxidation state of the cobalt impurity in SrTiO$_3$ is studied by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The synthesis conditions, under which cobalt predominantly (up to 76%) substitutes the atoms at the $A$ site of the perovskite structure, is found for SrTiO$_3$(Co) samples. By varying the synthesis conditions, it is possible to appreciably change the ratio between the concentrations of cobalt atoms incorporated into the $A$ and $B$ sites. It is established that the oxidation state of cobalt is +2 at the $A$ site and +3 at the $B$ site. It is revealed that the Co impurity at the $A$ site is off-center, and its displacement from the lattice site is $\sim$1.0 Å. First-principles calculations show that an isolated Co$^{3+}$ ion at the $B$ site is diamagnetic, whereas the Co$^{2+}$ ion at the $A$ site is in a high-spin state ($S = 3/2$).

Two novel properties, unique for semiconductors: a negative electron affinity [1-2], and a high p-type surface electrical conductivity [3-4], were discovered in diamond at the end of the last century. Both properties appear when the diamond surface is hydrogenated. A natural question arises: is the influence of the surface hydrogen on diamond limited only to the electrical properties? Here, we report the first observation of a transparency peak at 1328 cm-1 in IR absorption of hydrogen-terminated pure (undoped) nanodiamonds. This new optical property is ascribed to Fano-type destructive interference between zone-center phonons and free carriers (holes) appearing in the near-surface layer of hydrogenated nanodiamond. Our work opens the way to exploring the physics of electron-phonon coupling in undoped diamonds and promises the application of the H-terminated nanodiamonds as a new optical material with an induced transparency in IR optical range.

It is shown that high piezoelectric coefficients (up to 150--270 pC/N) in some superlattices with the polar discontinuity are due to the appearance of strong lattice distortions, whose symmetry follows that of a low-lying polar phonon mode of the ground-state structure, under the influence of external strain.

The absence of a susceptibility peak and a two-step release of the magnetic entropy in these materials has been proposed as evidence of proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we present a comparative study of the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) between two samples of Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ in the clean and disordered limits. In the disordered limit, the absence of a peak in either susceptibility or heat capacity and a weakly depolarizing $μ$SR signal may suggest a proximate spin liquid ground state. In the clean limit, however, we resolve a peak in both susceptibility and heat capacity data, and observe clear oscillations in $μ$SR that confirm long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. The $μ$SR oscillations fit to a Bessel function, characteristic of an incommensurate order, as reported in the parent compound $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. Our results clarify the role of structural disorder in the intercalated Kitaev magnets.

An approach for measuring energy of cosmic-ray particles with energies E > 10^12 eV using an ultrathin calorimeter is presented. The method is based on the analysis of the correlation dependence of the cascade size on the rate of development of the cascade process. In order to determine the primary energy, measurements are made based on the number of secondary particles in the cascade, Ne, at two observation levels Z1 and Z2, separated by an absorber layer. Based on the obtained measurements, a correlation analysis of the dependence of logNe(Z1) on the difference dN = log Ne(Z1) - log Ne(Z2) is carried out. The correlation curves (log Ne from dN) in the negative part of the dN axis are almost parallel to each other and practically do not depend on the depth of the cascade development. It makes it possible to determine the primary energy using an ultrathin calorimeter. The best option for applying the method is a calorimeter, which has a unit with a heavy target, leading to the rapid development of the cascade, and a homogeneous measuring and absorption block.

Kitaev magnets are materials with bond-dependent Ising interactions between localized spins on a honeycomb lattice. Such interactions could lead to a quantum spin-liquid (QSL) ground state at zero temperature. Recent theoretical studies suggest two potential signatures of a QSL at finite temperatures, namely a scaling behavior of thermodynamic quantities in the presence of quenched disorder, and a two-step release of the magnetic entropy. Here, we present both signatures in Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ which is synthesized from $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ by replacing the inter-layer Li atoms with Ag atoms. In addition, the DC susceptibility data confirm absence of a long-range order, and the AC susceptibility data rule out a spin-glass transition. These observations suggest a closer proximity to the QSL in Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ compared to its parent compound $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ that orders at 15 K. We discuss an enhanced spin-orbit coupling due to a mixing between silver d and oxygen p orbitals as a potential underlying mechanism.

Enclaves have emerged as a particularly compelling primitive to implement trusted execution environments: strongly isolated sensitive user-mode processes in a largely untrusted software environment. While the threat models employed by various enclave systems differ, the high-level guarantees they offer are essentially the same: attestation of an enclave's initial state, as well as a guarantee of enclave integrity and privacy in the presence of an adversary.
This work describes Sanctorum, a small trusted code base (TCB), consisting of a generic enclave-capable system, which is sufficient to implement secure enclaves akin to the primitive offered by Intel's SGX. While enclaves may be implemented via unconditionally trusted hardware and microcode, as it is the case in SGX, we employ a smaller TCB principally consisting of authenticated, privileged software, which may be replaced or patched as needed. Sanctorum implements a formally verified specification for generic enclaves on an in-order multiprocessor system meeting baseline security requirements, e.g., the MIT Sanctum processor and the Keystone enclave framework. Sanctorum requires trustworthy hardware including a random number generator, a private cryptographic key pair derived via a secure bootstrap** protocol, and a robust isolation primitive to safeguard sensitive information. Sanctorum's threat model is informed by the threat model of the isolation primitive, and is suitable for adding enclaves to a variety of processor systems.

Recent attacks have broken process isolation by exploiting microarchitectural side channels that allow indirect access to shared microarchitectural state. Enclaves strengthen the process abstraction to restore isolation guarantees.
We propose MI6, an aggressive, speculative out-of-order processor capable of providing secure enclaves under a threat model that includes an untrusted OS and an attacker capable of mounting any software attack currently considered practical, including control flow speculation attacks. MI6 is inspired by Sanctum [16] and extends its isolation guarantee to more realistic memory hierarchies. It also introduces a purge instruction, which is used only when a secure process is scheduled, and implements it for a complex processor microarchitecture. We model the performance impact of enclaves in MI6 through FPGA emulation on AWS F1 FPGAs by running SPEC CINT2006 benchmarks on top of an untrusted Linux OS. Security comes at the cost of approximately 16.4% average slowdown for protected programs.

The mixed ferrite-cobaltites LnFe0.5Co0.5O3, with Ln = Eu & Dy have been prepared by a sol-gel method and the samples have been characterized using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The magnetic investigations reveal that both samples ordered in canted antiferromagnetic structures near room temperature. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya or antisymmetric exchange interaction induces weak ferromagnetism due to canting of the antiferromagnetically ordered spins. In the case of Ln-Fe-Co orthoferrites, two magnetic sublattices (Ln3+-4f and Fe3+/Co3+-3d) generally align in opposite directions and interesting temperature dependent phenomena: e.g. uncompensated antiferromagnetic sublattices and spin-reorientations, are observed in the system. The existence of hysteresis at low temperature region has been explained in terms of the strength of magnetic interactions between Fe3+ and Co3+ ions with different A-site rare earth cations.

Anyonic excitations emerging from a Kitaev spin liquid can form a basis for quantum computers. Searching for such excitations motivated intense research on the honeycomb iridate materials. However, access to a spin liquid ground state has been hindered by magnetic ordering. Cu2IrO3 is a new honeycomb iridate without thermodynamic signatures of a long-range order. Here, we use muon spin relaxation to uncover the magnetic ground state of Cu2IrO3. We find a two-component depolarization with slow and fast relaxation rates corresponding to distinct regions with dynamic and static magnetism, respectively. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and first principles calculations identify a mixed copper valence as the origin of this behavior. Our results suggest that a minority of Cu2+ ions nucleate regions of static magnetism whereas the majority of Cu+/Ir4+ on the honeycomb lattice give rise to a Kitaev spin liquid.

It is shown that nanoobjects with only odd number of monolayers are ferroelectric. The ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and elastic properties of these polar structures are calculated. The appearance of polarization in these nanoobjects is explained by an uncompensated polarization that exists in an antiferroelectric structure of bulk SnS. The mechanism of ferroelectricity, in which the ferroelectric distortion is associated with short-range ordering of lone pairs, can be regarded as a way of creating ferroelectrics with high Curie temperature.

The upgrade of the GERDA experiment from Phase I to Phase II has been concluded in December 2015. The first Phase II data release shows that the goal to suppress the background by one order of magnitude compared to Phase I has been achieved. GERDA is thus the first experiment that will remain background-free up to its design exposure (100 kg yr). It will reach thereby a half-life sensitivity of more than 10$^{26}$ yr within 3 years of data collection. This paper describes in detail the modifications and improvements of the experimental setup for Phase II and discusses the performance of individual detector components.

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment located at the INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy), is looking for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge76, by using high-purity germanium detectors made from isotopically enriched material. The combination of the novel experimental design, the careful material selection for radio-purity and the active/passive shielding techniques result in a very low residual background at the Q-value of the decay, about 1e-3 counts/(keV kg yr). This makes GERDA the first experiment in the field to be background-free for the complete design exposure of 100 kg yr. A search for neutrinoless double beta decay was performed with a total exposure of 47.7 kg yr: 23.2 kg yr come from the second phase (Phase II) of the experiment, in which the background is reduced by about a factor of ten with respect to the previous phase. The analysis presented in this paper includes 12.4 kg yr of new Phase II data. No evidence for a possible signal is found: the lower limit for the half-life of Ge76 is 8.0e25 yr at 90% CL. The experimental median sensitivity is 5.8e25 yr. The experiment is currently taking data. As it is running in a background-free regime, its sensitivity grows linearly with exposure and it is expected to surpass 1e26 yr within 2018.

According to the XANES data, the mean Ni charge state is $\sim$2.5+. An analysis of the EXAFS spectra and their comparison with the results of first-principle calculations of the defect geometry suggest that Ni$^{2+}$ ions are in a high-spin state at the $B$ sites of the perovskite structure and the difference of the Ni$^{2+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ charges is mainly compensated by distant oxygen vacancies. In addition, a considerable amount of nickel in the sample is in a second phase BaNiO$_{3-δ}$. The measurements of the lattice parameter show a decrease in the unit cell volume upon do**, which can indicate the existence of a small amount of Ni$^{4+}$ ions at the $B$ sites.

Phonon spectra of CdSe nanoplatelets (2-6 ML) with the zinc-blende structure were calculated from first principles within the density-functional theory. It turned out that the Lamb modes in nanoplatelets are in fact optical rather than acoustic vibrations. Phonon spectra of the nanoplatelets show the appearance of a large number of low-frequency modes inherited from TA phonons in bulk CdSe. Calculations of the Raman spectra indicate a need to revise the interpretation of available experimental data. The largest contribution to the Raman spectra is provided by the quasi-Lamb modes with the $A_1$ symmetry. The $B_2$ modes whose frequencies depend on the environment of nanoplatelets and whose properties are closest to the properties of LO phonons explain the results obtained in the "nanoparticle-on-mirror" geometry. The features in Raman spectra previously attributed to surface optical (SO) modes should be interpreted as a manifestation of lower-order quasi-Lamb $A_1$ modes. Calculations of the infrared spectra find, in addition to the TO phonon line, the appearance of intense lines from surface modes originating from terminating F(Cl) atoms on the surface of nanoplatelets and true SO-modes.

Semiconductor nanoparticles of cadmium chalcogenides are known to exhibit pronounced thickness-dependent $E_0$ series of exciton transitions at the $Γ$ point of the Brillouin zone (BZ). In this work, we report an experimental evidence for high-energy series of exciton transitions, which originates from BZ points different from the $Γ$ point, in the family of cadmium chalcogenide quasi-2D nanoplatelets (NPLs). Intensive UV absorption bands demonstrating a pronounced size effect are observed for CdTe, CdSe, and CdS NPLs in addition to the $E_0$ exciton bands in the visible region. These new bands are attributed to transitions analogous to the $E_1$, $E_1+Δ_1$, and $E_2$ series observed in bulk crystals. First-principles DFT calculations of the electronic structure and absorption spectra support this explanation and show that the main contribution to these optical transitions comes from $X$ and $M$ points of the 2D BZ, which originate from $L$ and $X$ points of the 3D BZ. At the same time, the $E_0$ series of transitions at the $Γ$ point is well described by the multiband effective-mass model. The observation of the UV exciton bands reveals tunable optical properties of cadmium chalcogenide NPLs in UV spectral region, which may be interesting for practical applications.

The Standard Model of particle physics cannot explain the dominance of matter over anti-matter in our Universe. In many model extensions this is a very natural consequence of neutrinos being their own anti-particles (Majorana particles) which implies that a lepton number violating radioactive decay named neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay should exist. The detection of this extremely rare hypothetical process requires utmost suppression of any kind of backgrounds.
The GERDA collaboration searches for $0νββ$ decay of $^{76}$Ge ($^{76}\rm{Ge} \rightarrow\,^{76}\rm{Se} + 2e^-$) by operating bare detectors made from germanium with enriched $^{76}$Ge fraction in liquid argon. Here, we report on first data of GERDA Phase II. A background level of $\approx10^{-3}$ cts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr) has been achieved which is the world-best if weighted by the narrow energy-signal region of germanium detectors. Combining Phase I and II data we find no signal and deduce a new lower limit for the half-life of $5.3\cdot10^{25}$ yr at 90 % C.L. Our sensitivity of $4.0\cdot10^{25}$ yr is competitive with the one of experiments with significantly larger isotope mass.
GERDA is the first $0νββ$ experiment that will be background-free up to its design exposure. This progress relies on a novel active veto system, the superior germanium detector energy resolution and the improved background recognition of our new detectors. The unique discovery potential of an essentially background-free search for $0νββ$ decay motivates a larger germanium experiment with higher sensitivity.

The data from GERDA Phase~I have been analyzed for alpha events from the decay chain of these contaminations by looking for full decay chains and for time correlations between successive decays in the same detector. No candidate events for a full chain have been found. Using $5.25$ yr of data recorded with a $6.99\,{\rm g}$ sample of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$, approximately $150$ double-$β$ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than $3$. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2ν}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0ν}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $< m_{ββ} > < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. The interest in finding experimental realization of Quantum Liquid Spin phases leads us to elaborate polycrystalline samples of the 6H-B phase of Ba3NiSb2O9 . This structure shows Ni triangular planes and the first magnetic characterizations confirm the absence of any magnetic order as expected for QLS. The samples were synthesized by treatment under HP-HT of the 6H-A phase of Ba3NiSb2O9. The optimized synthesis conditions were 2.5 GPa and 620°C. By combining several technics as XRD, NPD and TEM we show that even the obtained compound is in fact a new form of Ba3NiSb2O9, that corresponds to a new stacking along c. This preserves the presence of Ni planes but results in a loss of the hexagonal symmetry. The TEM is helpful to conclude to a trigonal symmetry at a scale of 10nm.

The muon flux recorded by this veto shows a seasonal modulation. Two effects have been identified which are caused by secondary muons from the CNGS neutrino beam (2.2 %) and a temperature modulation of the atmosphere (1.4 %). A mean cosmic muon rate of $I^0_μ = (3.477 \pm 0.002_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.067_{\textrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-4}$/(s$\cdot$m$^2$) was found in good agreement with other experiments at LNGS at a depth of 3500~meter water equivalent.

This change is accompanied by a noticeable change in the interatomic Ni-O distances in the first shell. The first-principles calculations show that nickel creates an impurity band in the forbidden band gap of BaTiO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$, which explains the appearance of intense absorption of Ni-doped samples in the visible region. The analysis of the electronic structure of doped crystals and calculations of the oxygen vacancy formation energy in them show that different oxidation states of Ni in SrTiO$_3$ and BaTiO$_3$ can be explained by different formation energies of the oxygen vacancies in these compounds.

The phonon spectrum of cubic cadmium metastannate and the crystal structures of its distorted phases were calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. It is shown that the phonon spectrum and the energy spectrum of distorted phases in $α$-CdSnO$_3$ are surprisingly similar to the corresponding spectra of CdTiO$_3$. The ground state of $α$-CdSnO$_3$ is the ferroelectric $Pbn2_1$ phase; the energy gain accompanying the phase transition from the nonpolar $Pbnm$ phase to this phase is $\sim$30 meV and the spontaneous polarization in it is 0.25 C/m$^2$. An analysis of the eigenvector of the ferroelectric mode in $α$-CdSnO$_3$ and calculations of the partial densities of states indicates that the ferroelectric instability in this crystal, which does not contain $d$ transition elements, is associated with the formation of a covalent bonding between Cd and O atoms.

The sequence of ground states for SrTiO3 film subjected to epitaxial strain as well as to mechanical stress along the [001] and [110] axes is calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. Under the fixed-strain boundary conditions, an increase in the lattice parameter of a substrate results in the $I4cm \to I4/mcm \to Ima2 \to Cm \to Fmm2 \to Ima2$(II) sequence of ground states. Under the fixed-stress boundary conditions, the phase sequence is different and depends on how the stress is applied. It is revealed that the simultaneous presence of competing ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive instabilities in SrTiO3 gives rise to the appearance of metastable phases, whose number increases dramatically under the fixed-stress conditions. In the metastable phases, the octahedral rotation patterns are shown to differ substantially from those in the ground state. It is suggested that in systems with competing instabilities, each polar phase has its optimal octahedral rotation pattern which stabilizes this phase and creates a potential barrier preventing this phase to be transformed into other structures.

It was established that Mn ions substituting for Ti are in the Mn$^{4+}$ oxidation state and on-center. Mn ions substituting for Sr are in the Mn$^{2+}$ oxidation state, are off-center and displaced from the lattice sites by $\sim$0.32 Å. It was demonstrated that studies of the X-ray absorption near-edge structure can be used to determine the concentration ratio of Mn atoms located at the $A$ and $B$ sites.

The crystal structures and phonon spectra of orthorhombic cadmium titanate with the $Pbnm$ structure and of its two possible ferroelectrically distorted phases with $Pbn2_1$ and $Pb2_1m$ space groups were calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. The obtained structural parameters and frequencies of Raman- and infrared-active modes are in good agreement with available experimental data for the $Pbnm$ phase. Expansion of the total energy in a Taylor series of two order parameters showed that the ground state of the system corresponds to the $Pbn2_1$ structure into which the $Pbnm$ phase transforms through a second-order phase transition without intermediate phases. A substantial discrepancy between the calculated and experimentally observed lattice distortions and spontaneous polarization in the polar phase was explained by quantum fluctuations as well as by existence of twinning and competing long-period structures.

Two neutrino double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to excited states of $^{76}$Se has been studied using data from Phase I of the GERDA experiment. An array composed of up to 14 germanium detectors including detectors that have been isotopically enriched in $^{76}$Ge was deployed in liquid argon. The analysis of various possible transitions to excited final states is based on coincidence events between pairs of detectors where a de-excitation $γ$ ray is detected in one detector and the two electrons in the other.
No signal has been observed and an event counting profile likelihood analysis has been used to determine Frequentist 90\,\% C.L. bounds for three transitions: ${0^+_{\rm g.s.}-2^+_1}$: $T^{2ν}_{1/2}>$1.6$\cdot10^{23}$ yr, ${0^+_{\rm g.s.}-0^+_1}$: $T^{2ν}_{1/2}>$3.7$\cdot10^{23}$ yr and ${0^+_{\rm g.s.}-2^+_2}$: $T^{2ν}_{1/2}>$2.3$\cdot10^{23}$ yr. These bounds are more than two orders of magnitude larger than those reported previously. Bayesian 90\,\% credibility bounds were extracted and used to exclude several models for the ${0^+_{\rm g.s.}-0^+_1}$ transition.

Spectral and kinetic properties of extrinsic crossluminescence (CL) in SrF2:Ba(1%) and CaF2:Ba(1%) are compared with those of intrinsic CL in BaF2 and are analyzed taking into account EXAFS data obtained at the Ba LIII edge and results of first-principles calculations. The CL decay time was revealed to be longer in SrF2:Ba and CaF2:Ba compared to BaF2. This fact contradicts the expected acceleration of luminescence decay which could result from an increased overlap of wave functions in solid solutions due to shortening of the Ba-F distance obtained in both EXAFS measurements and first-principles calculations. This discrepancy is explained by the effect of migration and subsequent non-radiative decay of the Ba(5p) core holes in BaF2 and by decreasing of the probability of optical transitions between Ba(5p) states and the valence band in SrF2:Ba and CaF2:Ba predicted by first-principles calculations.

Based on the analysis of unstable modes in the phonon spectra, the structures of possible distorted phases are determined, their energies are calculated, and it is shown that $R3m$ is the ground-state structure of RbNbO3. In RbTaO3, the ferroelectric instability is suppressed by zero-point lattice vibrations. For ferroelectric phases of RbNbO3, spontaneous polarization, piezoelectric, nonlinear optical, electro-optical, and other properties as well as the energy band gap in the LDA and GW approximations are calculated.
