Spectra of subrings of cohomology generated by characteristic classes for fusion systems
Abstract: If $\mathcal{F}$ is a saturated fusion system on a finite $p$-group $S$, we define the Chern subring $Ch(\mathcal{F})$ of $\mathcal{F}$ to be the subring of the mod-$p$ cohomology $H^*(S)$ of $S$ generated by the Chern classes of $\mathcal{F}$-stable representations of $S$. We show that $Ch(\mathcal{F})$ is contained in $H^*(\mathcal{F})$ and apply a result of Green and the first author to describ… ▽ More

Weighing Anchor on Credit Card Debt
Abstract: We find it is common for consumers who are not in financial distress to make credit card payments at or close to the minimum. This pattern is difficult to reconcile with economic factors but can be explained by minimum payment information presented to consumers acting as an anchor that weighs payments down. Building on Stewart (2009), we conduct a hypothetical credit card payment experiment to tes… ▽ More

Leveraging Contextual Relatedness to Identify Suicide Documentation in Clinical Notes through Zero Shot Learning
Abstract: Identifying suicidality including suicidal ideation, attempts, and risk factors in electronic health record data in clinical notes is difficult. A major difficulty is the lack of training samples given the small number of true positive instances among the increasingly large number of patients being screened. This paper describes a novel methodology that identifies suicidality in clinical notes by… ▽ More

Homological growth of Artin kernels in positive characteristic
Abstract: We prove an analogue of the Lück Approximation Theorem in positive characteristic for certain residually finite rationally soluble (RFRS) groups including right-angled Artin groups and Bestvina--Brady groups. Abstract: Previously one of us introduced a family of groups $G^M_L(S)$, parametrized by a finite flag complex $L$, a regular covering $M$ of $L$, and a set $S$ of integers. We give conjectural descriptions of when $G^M_L(S)$ is either residually finite or virtually torsion-free. Let $\mathcal{X}_{ac}$ be the class of Hausdorff spaces of finite covering dimension which are mod-$p$ acyclic for at least one prime $p$. We produce the first examples of infinite finitely generated groups $Q$ with the property that for any action of $Q$ on any $X\in \mathcal{X}_{ac}$, there is a global fixed point. More… ▽ More

Realising fusion systems
Abstract: We show that every fusion system on a p-group S is equal to the fusion system associated to a discrete group G with the property that every p-subgroup of G is conjugate to a subgroup of S.

The l^2-cohomology of hyperplane complements
Abstract: We compute the l^2-Betti numbers of the complement of a finite collection of affine hyperplanes in complex space. At most one of the l^2-Betti numbers is non-zero.

On finite subgroups of groups of type VF
Abstract: For any finite group Q not of prime power order, we construct a group G that is virtually of type F, contains infinitely many conjugacy classes of subgroups isomorphic to Q, and contains only finitely many conjugacy classes of other finite subgroups.

Classifying spaces for proper actions of locally-finite groups
Abstract: For each finite ordinal n, and each locally-finite group G of cardinality aleph-sub-n, we construct an (n+1)-dimensional, contractible CW-complex on which G acts with finite stabilizers. We use the complex to obtain information about cohomology with induced coefficients. Our techniques also give information about the location of some large free abelian groups in the hierarchy HF.
