Matrix power means and new characterizations of operator monotone functions

Efficient Neural Network Approaches for Leather Defect Classification

Abstract: Genuine leather, such as the hides of cows, crocodiles, lizards and goats usually contain natural and artificial defects, like holes, fly bites, tick marks, veining, cuts, wrinkles and others. A traditional solution to identify the defects is by manual defect inspection, which involves skilled experts. It is time consuming and may incur a high error rate and results in low productivity. A traditional solution to identify the defects is by manual defect inspection, which involves skilled experts. It is time consuming and may incur a high error rate and results in low productivity. This paper presents a series of automatic image processing processes to perform the classification of leather defects by adopting deep learning approaches. Particularly, the leather images are first partitioned into small patches,then it undergoes a pre-processing technique, namely the Canny edge detection to enhance defect visualization. Next, artificial neural network (ANN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) are employed to extract the rich image features. The best classification result achieved is 80.3 %, evaluated on a data set that consists of 2000 samples. In addition, the performance metrics such as confusion matrix and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) are reported to demonstrate the efficiency of the method proposed. △ Less

Tracial moment problems on hypercubes

Abstract: In this paper we introduce the "tracial $K$-moment problem" and the "sequential matrix-valued $K$-moment problem" and show the equivalence of the solvability of these problems. Using a Haviland's theorem for matrix polynomials, we solve these $K$-moment problems for the case where $K$ is the hypercube $[-1,1]^n$. Two trace inequalities for operator functions

Abstract: In this paper we show that for a non-negative operator monotone function $f$ on $[0, \infty)$ such that $f(0)= 0$ and for any positive semidefinite matrices $A$ and $B$, $$ Tr((A-B)(f(A)-f(B))) \le Tr(|A-B|f(|A-B|)). $$ When the function $f$ is operator convex on $[0, \infty)$, the inequality is reversed. Large-Scale Conformal Growth of Atomic-Thick MoS2 for Highly Efficient Photocurrent Generation

Herein, we report on a controllable method for the conformal growth of monolayer MoS2 on not only planar but also micro- and nano-rugged SiO2/Si substrat… ▽ More Controlling the interconnection of neighboring seeds (nanoflakes) to full coverage of the textured substrate is the main challenge for the large-scale conformal growth of atomic-thick transition metal dichalcogenides by chemical vapor deposition. Herein, we report on a controllable method for the conformal growth of monolayer MoS2 on not only planar but also micro- and nano-rugged SiO2/Si substrates via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The continuity of monolayer MoS2 on the rugged surface is evidenced by scanning electron microscopy, cross-section high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL) map**, and Raman map**. Interestingly, the photo-responsivity (~254.5 mA/W) of as-grown MoS2 on the nano-rugged substrate exhibits 59 times higher than that of the planar sample (4.3 mA/W) under a small applied bias of 0.1 V. This value is record high when compared with all previous MoS2-based photocurrent generation under low or zero bias. Such a large enhancement in the photo-responsivity arises from a large active area for light-matter interaction and local strain for PL quenching, where the latter effect is the key factor and unique in the conformally grown monolayer on the nano-rugged surface. The result is a step toward the batch fabrication of modern atomic-thick optoelectronic devices. △ Less

On deformations of maps and curve singularities
