First-principles calculation of H vibrational excitations at a dislocation core of Pd
Abstract: Palladium is an ideal system for understanding the behavior of hydrogen in metals. In Pd, H is located both in octahedral sites and in dislocation cores, which act as nanoscale H traps and form Cottrell atmospheres. Adjacent to a dislocation core, H experiences the largest possible distortion in alpha-Pd. Ab initio density-functional theory computes the potential energy for a hydrogen in an octahe… ▽ More

Optical to UV spectra and birefringence of SiO$_2$ and TiO$_2$: First-principles calculations with excitonic effects
Abstract: A first principles approach is presented for calculations of optical -- ultraviolet (UV) spectra including excitonic effects. The approach is based on Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations using the \textsc{NBSE} code combined with ground-state density-functional theory calculations from the electronic structure code \textsc{ABINIT}. Test calculations for bulk Si are presented, and the approach i… ▽ More

Theory of Rabi interaction between an infrared-active phonon and cavity-resonant modes
Abstract: We present the theory of interaction between a polar vibration in a semiconductor and an electromagnetic mode of a surrounding cavity. Tuning the cavity frequency near the transverse optical phonon frequency couples the phonon-induced polarization field within the dielectric and the electromagnetic field in the cavity. Depending on engineering parameters, we predict that this cavity quantum elec… ▽ More

Room-temperature ballistic transport in narrow graphene strips
Abstract: We investigate electron-phonon couplings, scattering rates, and mean free paths in zigzag-edge graphene strips with widths of the order of 10 nm. Our calculations for these graphene nanostrips show both the expected similarity with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and the suppression of the electron-phonon scattering due to a Dirichlet boundary condition that prohibits one major backscatteri… ▽ More

Two-phonon infrared processes in semiconductors
Abstract: We report our detailed calculation of the infrared spectra of GaAs and GaP from first principles, and similar ongoing efforts for diamond-type spectra, which have recently been calculated.

Anharmonic effects on infrared spectra of GaAs and GaP
Abstract: With a study of bulk GaAs and GaP, we report detailed infrared spectra and their temperature dependence from first principles. Fine features and low-temperature trends in the predicted response are confirmed by experiment. The spectra are calculated from the far-infrared through twice the frequency of the zone-center optical phonon. The treatment relies on recent developments in the theories of… ▽ More

Dynamical Matrices and Interatomic-Force Constants from Wave-Commensurate Supercells
Abstract: We apply standard, first-principles calculations to a complete treatment of lattice dynamics in the harmonic approximation. The algorithm makes use of the straightforward ``frozen-phonon'' approach to the calculation of vibrational spectra and addresses some limitations of the method. Our prescription's validity is independent of crystal structure. It treats polar crystals in a general way, and… ▽ More
