Compensating slice emittance growth in high brightness photoinjectors using sacrificial charge
Abstract: Achieving maximum electron beam brightness in photoinjectors requires detailed control of the 3D bunch shape and precise tuning of the beam focusing. Even in state-of-the-art designs, slice emittance growth due to nonlinear space charge forces and partial nonlaminarity often remains non-negligible. In this work we introduce a new means to linearize the transverse slice phase space: a sacrificial p… ▽ More

Random walk loop soup
Abstract: The Brownian loop soup introduced in Lawler and Werner (2004) is a Poissonian realization from a sigma-finite measure on unrooted loops. This measure satisfies both conformal invariance and a restriction property. In this paper, we define a random walk loop soup and show that it converges to the Brownian loop soup. In fact, we give a strong approximation result making use of the strong approxima… ▽ More

Irreducible compositions and the first return to the origin of a random walk
Abstract: Let $n = b_1 + ... + b_k = b_1' + \cdot + b_k'$ be a pair of compositions of $n$ into $k$ positive parts. We say this pair is {\em irreducible} if there is no positive $j < k$ for which $b_1 + ... b_j = b_1' + ... b_j'$. The probability that a random pair of compositions of $n$ is irreducible is shown to be asymptotic to $8/n$. This problem leads to a problem in probability theory. Two players m… ▽ More

The Beurling estimate for a class of random walks
Abstract: An estimate of Beurling states that if K is a curve from 0 to the unit circle in the complex plane, then the probability that a Brownian motion starting at -eps reaches the unit circle without hitting the curve is bounded above by c eps^{1/2}. This estimate is very useful in analysis of boundary behavior of conformal maps, especially for connected but rough boundaries. The corresponding estimate… ▽ More

The Brownian loop soup
Abstract: We define a natural conformally invariant measure on unrooted Brownian loops in the plane and study some of its properties. We relate this measure to a measure on loops rooted at a boundary point of a domain and show how this relation gives a way to ``chronologically add Brownian loops'' to simple curves in the plane.

Conformal invariance, universality, and the dimension of the Brownian frontier
Abstract: This paper describes joint work with Oded Schramm and Wendelin Werner establishing the values of the planar Brownian intersection exponents from which one derives the Hausdorff dimension of certain exceptional sets of planar Brownian motion. In particular, we proof a conjecture of Mandelbrot that the dimension of the frontier is 4/3. The proof uses a universality principle for conformally invari… ▽ More
